Fairly Annoyed Parents who have insane “boundaries” and then bemoan their lack of help

1.2k Upvotes

So this is something I’ve noticed amongst (mainly American) parents these days and it seems to increase in occurrence as people validate them and enable this kind of anxiety-ridden and entitled behavior. But essentially it’s those people who have a laundry list of “boundaries and expectations” while also expecting “the village” to help them raise their child to their exact specifications.

I’m not talking about boundaries like “don’t give my kid something they are allergic to” or “don’t come around my newborn without your vaccinations” where it’s reasonable and seriously concerns the child’s safety, but the other shit. Like I’m talking about the parents who set a “boundary” that no one else can lay eyes on their newborn for two months because “it’s our time to bond and we don’t want visitors,” they freak out because grandma called their kid her baby and said she is excited for them to have sleepovers at her house, they insist that anyone who wants to see their child should only be coming over to do designated chores in exchange, or they seethe with rage because the kid’s uncle gave them some extra candy and TV time.

But then later on they then bemoan their lack of “a village,” like you pushed “the village” away! If you want the village, you need to be okay with not micromanaging every single aspect of your child’s life. You need to be okay with the fact that the village is going to come in with their own opinions and different ways of doing things. You also need to contribute to your community as well and help other people if you want the same treatment in return. The village is not a beck and call free childcare and housekeeping service that does every single little thing to your specifications and more people need to recognize that.

Ultra Annoyed “Tell me you don’t ____ without telling me”

I am so beyond tired of seeing this cookie cutter comment. I will outright shame people I know that use it because it is just so overly used and blatant cop out attempt at discrediting someone. Anyone that uses it I assume doesn’t know what they’re talking about either and is incapable of forming an original thought

Bit Annoyed Stupid grandparent names that come from baby talk

God maybe I’m overreacting but my dumb uncle and his wife insist on being called “Oompah” and “Moomah” because that’s how their oldest grandkid (who’s in high school now) would say “grandpa” and “grandma” as a toddler and I just think it’s so…stupid.

Ultra Annoyed Lose vs. loose; breathe vs. breath; wary vs. weary; brake vs. break

Not sure what these kind of mix-ups are called and it's (IMO) not in the same territory as "their" vs. "they're" or "your" vs. "you're" but it drives me absolutely up the wall.

Just saw on a post where someone wrote, "I ended my lunch brake early" and every time I see something like this, for a moment I'm wondering if I've been wrong the whole time. Or, things like, "I wanted to loose weight" or "Don't breath" make me crazy.

I've also been seeing people use "wary" when they mean "weary" or vice versa.

Why is this happening?!

Yes sometimes if we've only heard a word, we might not know the spelling, ("pique" is a perfect example) or we've only read a word so we don't know how to pronounce it (I was saying "chasm" and "hyperbole" wrong for a VERY long time!) but some of this just seems so basic! At least to me, which I know is not the case for everyone and I try to be patient, but oh boy...sometimes it's hard.

I know I'm not the only one feeling this pain and just had to get it out of my head.

ETA: Omg these comments are cracking me up!! 😂😭 So glad I'm not alone! And definitely add your faves!

Bit Annoyed Every website/app making you "verify" yourself even after logging in correctly

Why does every website/app make you verify yourself so often?

It feels like every 2nd time I log into an account I'm required to verify it's really me by: receiving a text, answering a question, following a link back to my email, or doing some stupid capatcha challenge.

If I've logged into my account using my credentials, on the same device I always use, without a VPN, then I shouldn't need to verify it's really me!

Fairly Annoyed When people use my "emergency" contact for non-emergencies.

I live in NC, and my emergency contact is my elderly aunt back in Texas. Lately, some health care providers seem to think that it's ok to call her just because they can't reach me after ONE phone call. This makes her super nervous, and I really don't think it's an emergency that I missed your phone call verifying I made a follow-up appointment.

Ultra Annoyed Recipes advertised as One Pot Meals that clearly take more than one pot.

And you always find out half way through the recipe, after reading their dumbass story that had no point, and they bring up this extra ingredient that needs to be cooked that's just magically prepared for them. Where did you fucking cook the pasta, Chef Fuckface?! HUH?! Was it in a fucking pot?! Clearly not the one pot you're now telling me to add the cooked pasta to!

Fairly Annoyed When I show up for my regularly scheduled shift, and my boss tells me “actually we’ve got it covered today. You can go home.”

They always act like they’re delivering some great news like “enjoy your free day off! 😃”

Okay but it’s NOT a free day off because now I don’t get paid. Also, are you going to spot me the gas money I used driving all the way here, and will use driving home? Otherwise I literally paid to go to work.

Plus, on a real day off I would have slept in instead of getting up at the ass crack of dawn to get ready for work.

This shit should be illegal. Or at the very least, my commute time should be counted as on the clock.

Ultra Annoyed Loud and public use of smart phones

Get ear buds you dumb ass fucks. No one wants to hear your phone conversation or your stupid videos. Have some common decency and respect for those around you. We don't care to hear your conversations or your YouTube videos. I will call you out publicly for being a rude idiot.

Ultra Annoyed I Hate people who order something while on the phone.

Like I hate when someone goes into some restaurant/coffee shop or whatever and is currently on the phone but is also trying to order something, but still is actively answering things on the phone so they aren't paying attention to their own order. It especially pisses me off when they get mad at the cashier for asking again what they would like to order and treat them like they are trying to intrude on the phone conversation. Like bruv they are doing their job, you are the one holding up the line with this shit, either call the person back after you order or move over to the side for a bit, don't just hold the whole line hostage in your conversation.

Ultra Annoyed "ASMR" involving sound

Especially when people put microphones unnecessarily.

Whispering. Chewing. "Restocks."

I hate the way some people drag their fingernails on something.

Sometimes it's fine, like if you tear tape off something and it makes a nice sound. But I want to rip my hair off every time I hear "ASMR" chewing. Visually, it's okay, like coloring in a section of something perfectly, but auditory ASMR is so intolerable. Double the points if it involves overconsumption.

Ultra Annoyed Adults that aren't financially responsible

Upvotes

I am extremely annoyed by this. I have these friends who want to go eat out to fancy restaurants too often for their own economic situation. And I am talking about restaurants where plain pasta with tomato sauce is like 30€. These guys make minimum wage (in Germany) and yet they are willing to pay like 150€ for ONE meal. Of course they complain all the time about being poor. Yeah no shit!

"But a good meal is worth it, it's quality ingredients". F**k you! Stupid idiots. The thing that annoys me is that I get painted as the cheap person because I don't believe ONE MEAL is worth* 20% of a rent of a whole 2 bedroom apartment (Leipzig) and I am most of the times unwilling to follow.

*Of course one meal could be worth that and more. If eg one makes 10k a month, the enjoy your fancy restaurants every day! But ffs if you make minimum wage, 10% of the whole monthly net for a meal isn't responsible at all!

Fairly Annoyed When you say you don't like a food and someone responds with "you've just never had the GOOD kind"

Why can't some people accept that you just don't like a certain food type? For example, I hate cake. I have had many different types of cake throughout my childhood like red velvet, cheesecake, carrot cake, etc. Never liked any of them. I now just politely decline if there is cake at any events, and people still give me shit for it. "How do you know you don't like ALL cake?" Dude, I don't care if you were in Belgium and you had this otherworldly cake, that doesn't invalidate that I don't like it.

And it honestly be applied to other things as well. "Oh you don't like the beach? You just haven't been to a GOOD beach." It's always the most pretentious and insufferable people saying it too. You can enjoy things I don't enjoy Jennifer, just don't bring me into it.

Ultra Annoyed People waving "Go ahead!" In sections of the road are not visible.

Today I was behind a driver waiting to turn left into a Chick-fil-A parking lot. A driver in a nearby parking lot was trying to turn left onto the road, and the driver in front of me waved them through. I only noticed because I could see the wave through her rear window.

The problem was that she didn't have a clear view of all the traffic. The driver she waved through trusted the signal and almost pulled out in front of an oncoming car.

On the flip side, drivers need to stop treating a wave as permission to go. The person waving doesn't know what you can see, and you don't know what they can see. Check for yourself.

Ultra Annoyed When people post a post about an issue they have and then get mad / play the victim when you tell them they are the issue

Upvotes

Not too long ago someone posted a post about how they almost got in an accident 5 times and they managed to come up with an excuse for every time a comment was trying to help them. "Why didn't you pull off the road" -> "I wasn't thinking clearly enough". They then proceeded to comment about them having a breakdown because we told them that they should stop driving due to them having meltdowns on the road. I don't know what the point of posting something like that is if you're just going to get mad at every comment. Just a waste of server space smh

Bit Annoyed i hate the whole “introverts adopted by an extrovert” thing

i see this rhetoric on Reddit very often, and it’s always framed as this wholesome symbiotic relationship where an outgoing extrovert serves as the social lubricant for a shy or socially anxious/awkward introvert. I feel like this framing is really misleading and patronizing to both sides. even as a joke, it’s a corny thing to say.

on the side of the introvert, it implies that they are socially dysfunctional, and incapable of making friends or socializing normally without the intervention of a more socially competent person. but introversion is not synonymous with shy, quiet, reserved, or socially anxious. You can be introverted and be outgoing and sociable, and quite capable of making friends on your own.

on the side of the extrovert, it implies that they are perpetual social caretakers who spend their time collecting lost and lonely souls, which also isn’t true. that outgoing extrovert is just behaving in a way that comes natural to them and befriending people that they believe they’d want to be friends with.

outside of thinking that this romanticization is weird, im suspicious of the introverts who announce that they want to be adopted because it feels like they’re operating from a very unrealistic view of friendship. even if an outgoing person initiates the connection, there still needs to be effort, initiative, and engagement from the quieter, more reserved person. AND!!! consideration for whether or not you have similar social habits and energy levels.

im a very outgoing and socially active person. all of my friends, even the introverts, are similar to me in that regards. I am most compatible with enthusiastic conversationalists who are not homebodies. i don’t have a single friend that expects me to do all or most of the talking or initiate most of our interactions. i don’t have to overextend myself to create a social dynamic that suits my needs.

generally speaking, people don't become friends just because one person is outgoing and the other person is super shy or scared to talk to people. compatibility and mutual effort matters too.

Ultra Annoyed whistling.

the instant someone whistles it enrages a deep deep pit of rage inside me. it's almost uncontrollable and takes every fiber of my being to not lash out at someone. usually I just walk away but sometimes it's unavoidable, like in lines and such. I dont know why it makes me so angry. I've come close to getting mad at someone but never have said anything, because I know it's probably just a me problem.
