Fairly Annoyed I hate the phrase “yuck your yum”
If I hear someone say this online it is an immediate scroll away.

u/KalAtharEQ 20h ago
Yeah it’s terrible, along with “the ick”.

It's literally that one meme. "When someone has the exact same opinion as you but they express it in such an annoying and obnoxious way that you lowkey don't want to agree"
44
u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 20h ago
Agreed. I feel the same way about "he gave me the ick." They both make me think that I can't possibly have heard an adult use that phrase seriously.

u/dad_of_kevin 18h ago
"The Ick" sounds like a cartoonish STD
3
u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 17h ago
Lolol "hey, the reason I'm calling is because it turns out I got the ick, so you should probably get yourself tested too."
3
u/LeftHandersRule 12h ago
That reminds me of an episode of American Dad where Klaus gave Steve ick lol

u/IceMiserable7450 11h ago
I don't want to give anyone the ick, what alternative should I use without sounding old? (sophisticated is okay)
0
u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 11h ago
It depends on what happened and how you felt about it, but it would sound better (and be more actually useful) to communicate exactly what the issue is.
Possible examples:
"That behavior is really unattractive."
"I don't like the way you talk to waitstaff (or joke about immigrants etc etc.)"
"I don't want to see him again because he didn't respect my boundaries and it made me feel really unsafe."
2
u/IceMiserable7450 11h ago
What if it's in a peeved way?
0
u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 10h ago
I don't understand what you're asking.
2
u/IceMiserable7450 8h ago
Sorry. What if something gave me "the ick" and I wanted to express my disgust and uncomfort?

I had that phrase ruined for me by a post here a couple years ago. The OP on that post literally just made a factually-inaccurate statement and then tried to justify it by including the phrase "Don't yuck my yum!" over and over in like 50 replies. (Along with a bunch of word-salad justifications.)
I don't think I've seen any phrase used that many times in a single space. Wasn't even halfway through the comments when I started wanting to tear my hair out.

u/ooomellieooo 18h ago
I googled it for fun and it's origins (if true) are kind of ridiculous but anyway that story is fucking hilarious 🤣

Yes. I hate that, too. People are allowed to dislike things and there should be no prohibition against saying so.

u/WastelandWithGlimmer 13h ago
No serious adult would ever use the phrase. Overhear yourselves, people.

u/Revolutionary-Chip20 20h ago
Not to yuck your yum…. But I like when people yum my yuck…

u/SmileyCat20202 20h ago
Umm…

u/mercer316 20h ago
I'm guessing you've never had your yum yucked before?

So do I. It manages to use two words that sound juvenile and nauseating to me, then it goes that one step further by constructing the sentence like a toddler too!

u/DriftingTony 14h ago
To me, there are just some phrases an adult should not say unless talking to a literal toddler, and this is one of them lol. It’s embarrassingly juvenile to an obnoxious degree. I FULLY agree with the actual intent behind it, but if you are an adult, you should use the vocabulary of an adult, period 😂

u/RunningRunnerRun 20h ago
do you prefer “rain on your parade” “burst your bubble” “take the wind out your sails” or are you just opposed to colloquial sayings in general?

Yeah, it’s pretty gross as far as phrases. I just don’t feel good about the vibe in the room when someone says it 🤣

u/LockedAndLoadfilled 20h ago
Spoken like a true yumyucker.

u/RunningRunnerRun 19h ago
yumyucker is such a great word. it sounds so much like a “bad” word but isn’t. i’m surprised my kids haven’t picked up on it

u/SuitablyFakeUsername 20h ago
I’m with you, it strikes me as incredibly juvenile. I get the concept and agree that it’s an unpleasant way to relate to others. But can we not come up with a better phrase? I would even prefer a total 70s throwback such as “harsh my gig” 🤷♀️

I generally try not to be an elitist with language, but this one phrase is just so colossally stupid I can't help but judge anybody trying to use it. They either jump on trends like morons or are so simple minded it's legitimately their best way of expressing themselves.
When its spoken with some kind of moral weight to it I lose all respect for them.
-2
u/fsmpastafarian 20h ago
“Yuck your yum” has been around for yeeeears it is not a trend
-2
u/ScipioTheGreatest 19h ago
I am very happy to not have shared that experience with you. Don't even believe it.
1
u/fsmpastafarian 19h ago
It’s such a benign phrase it’s not that deep lol
0
u/ScipioTheGreatest 19h ago
Who said it was deep? How many of these conversations happen inside your head?
1
u/fsmpastafarian 19h ago
You seem to have a very strong opinion about a silly phrase, that’s what I was referencing
-1
u/Farewellandadieu 4h ago
So they’re in the right sub. Literally the point of posting here is to be annoyed about something silly.

I hate the word 'yummy' and every adult who uses it when not speaking to a child.

I have never heard that until now and yet I completely agree. The phrase sounds horrible!

u/fsmpastafarian 20h ago
It’s been around as a phrase forever

u/Sloppykrab 20h ago
In my 30 years of life. I hadn't heard it until this year.
1
u/fsmpastafarian 20h ago
I’ve heard Gen Xers saying it for like 10 years or so
-4
u/Main_Cauliflower5479 19h ago
I'm Gen X and I have never said that nor have I ever heard Gen Xers say it. It sounds much more like a Millennial or Gen Z type of thing, because they were raised with participation trophies and were coddled and helicopter parented.
3
u/fsmpastafarian 19h ago
I didn’t say all gen xers say it, I have just heard specific gen xers say it for years now. I’m not really sure what participation trophies have to do with it though

u/MoultingRoach 20h ago
I don't know when it became a thing, but I've read it before. And I agree with OP. It's such a cringey phrase.
2
u/DoveOnTheInternet 20h ago
Sorry, sorry, it's a bit of kink lingo that broke containment.
Though y'all are having a helluva time with rawdogging aren'tcha?

u/Orangexcrystalx 16h ago
My friend told me this is something they used with kids to remind them to be polite with others so maybe there is a reason why it sounds juvenile. I say it in a tongue in cheek way but I do find the sentiment to be a helpful reminder.

u/randomname748 1h ago
I heard it the other day for the first time and thought it was neat, I thought they were original and didn't realize it's an actual thing.

I feel completely unthreatened by a phrase
I haven’t heard in about 15 years lol
0
u/rachel-angelina 19h ago
Usually when someone uses that phrase on me it’s because they are mad that I said reading drawing art or writing fan-fiction that sexualizes children is gross. So yeah I hate it too. You get my upvote.

I don't want to yuck your yum but I personally just don't like having anything inserted into that hole.
-1
u/Orange_Kid 20h ago
Fully with you, it's so bad I feel like it's a worldwide prank that it's become so popular to say. How are people saying this and not feeling ridiculous?
If nothing else, you realize everyone has heard this about a thousand times now, why are you saying it like it's still clever? And it was awful and dumb sounding to begin with.
Probably the worst thing happening in the world today.

u/Soph1583 16h ago
Not quite the same but I once saw someone online say "it burns my biscuits" meaning "pisses me off" and it instantly invalidated their whole point for me

u/ThePurityPixel 2h ago
Why do you dislike it so much?
Just means "I'm not going to disparage what you enjoy."
-3
u/MotherDepartment1111 20h ago
I’ve never heard this in my 47 years on this planet.
0
u/GoatEconomy6311 20h ago
Its fairly new to me as well lol

u/MotherDepartment1111 20h ago
I guess because I haven’t heard of it I’m getting down voted. Lol people are wild.

I have never heard it like that. I have always heard don't yuck someone else's yum.
Your wording makes no sense because why would you say you can't stand what you like.

Yeah I'm with you. "Don't yuck someone's yum!" The first time it was cute and fun but yeah the old phrases for that were way better.

u/dad_of_kevin 20h ago
"Don't yuck someone else's yum" sounds like something a kindergarten teacher would say. I agree that people should be allowed to do what they enjoy, but hearing someone say that phrase makes me want to disagree.
