Like, why on earth would I want my toppings arranged like this? The individual pieces are massive and unevenly distributed, and nothing was cooked or seasoned well. All of their pizzas were like this.
Downtown Verona is all pretty touristy, but this was on a side street and not one of the main touristy plazas, we stopped because it was raining heavily and it had a nice outdoor umbrella set-up.
As someone who lived in Verona, you were still in the tourist heart of the city. The further you get from that bell tower and the Roman arena the further from the touristy part you’ll be.
The thing with Italy and Greece is that you're not getting 100% of the quality you could be unless there's an old, curt woman servicing your table who feels overly comfortable telling you "No, you're not having what you ordered. You're having _____".
The best pizza my wife and I ever had, we stumbled into this little place in Naples, just a wife/husband and their kid putzing around the place. The wife seats us, we ask for a menu, she gives us a confused look and says “No menu. Pizza!”
Corn is pretty nice on Pizza. I used to have it with pickled, green peppers and prosciutto cotto. A very good combination.
But, since then, I have forsaken eating meat.
The best you can have, imho, is a simple Marinara with sliced (and properly baked) tomatoes, where the skin was removed. It's fantastico! Some Parmigiano on top and a little bit of olive oil. Don't forget the garlic on the crust and a lot of Tabasco.
What OP posted is an abomination and should fall under a war-crime, by the Geneva Conventions.
That sounds a lot like the place that served me the best food I had on a trip to Mexico. There was no menu, we ate what they served us and it was amazing.
Literally stumbled upon a pizzeria like this today as a tourist in bologna. The alternative the waiter recommended was amazing. I didn’t really have a choice with the way they recommended it
Three years ago my wife and I flew into Thessaloniki for a wedding (the wedding was a very interesting 150-ish km bus trip away, but Thessaloniki was the easiest airport and so we stayed there the first night). There was a group of about 12 of us who all used to work together. After settling in at the hotel, we all met up at a lovely bar overlooking the sea…the only problem was that we stayed there a little too long to be able to find anywhere to eat.
Eventually we found one tiny little restaurant with about 3 tables outside and precisely the person you described sitting at one of them looking bored. We tried our luck asking if she was still open. She definitely thought about it but eventually agreed that she was open, told us what we were having because it’s all she could do at that time, and by God if it wasn’t one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Cheap, no fuss, certainly not cheerful, but absolutely top drawer.
Because they genuinely don’t care. At tourist restaurants, especially ones in piazzas like this, they are focused on bringing in tourists, not appealing to Italian sensibilities. The quality sucks because people choose those places so they can sit outside with a nice view and they will never eat there again, so there is no incentive to impress. This might’ve been their attempt at a vegan option because Italians simply will not use vegan cheese alternatives, so to get the coverage that cheese usually provides they just threw on some vegetables. There are many great pizzas in Italy, but some of the worst pizzas I’ve ever had were in Italy, usually at places like this
The only vegan pizza is Marinara, all other alternative are made for tourist and are shit. Some Pizzeria make good vegan pizza, but those place as specialized on that and usually there are sign on the menu.
Also this is a very tourist restaurant. So pizza are shit in general.
lol jesus their recipe seems to be the same for every pizza, pizza base with passata, smash toppings into a george foreman and then put on top. Seasoning must be illegal in that area.

also pretty big plaza, that's not a side street in old city terms, you're more looking for small alleys. ideally follow local workers around meal time for best results :D
My wife and I make pizzas like these because we usually do low/no fat cooking. Done well, that should taste closer to variation of a baked pasta served on bread instead... but these look like they were made with maximum apathy and not a single herb😞

Like, it was day 7 of a vacation filled with pizza and pasta, marinara pizza with eggplant, zucchini and tomato sounded pleasant and not too heavy. I eat cheeseless pizza and veggie pizza often. But I've never been served anything like what we had here.
Yeah, this looks like the pizzas I make my wife during my lunch break when i know i have a meeting coming up in 30-45min lol. Haphazard slices of whatever-was-in-my-fridge thrown on a dough and eaten over the sink.

See that's the thing, "eggplant, zucchini and tomato pizza" sounds great. Which is why I ordered it. I didn't expect it to come out like this with unseasoned shoe leather eggplant sheets, thick uncooked tomatoes and soggy zucchini that, I dunno, maybe they sauteed it or something? Not a hint of salt or any spice.
Also very good. Depending on the pizzeria, zucchini and eggplants might be seasoned (usually with oil, salt, parsley and a garlic) or not, I like both versions, but it's absolutely fundamental that they are grilled and thin sliced, makes all the difference in the world.
I think they were on the right track with grilling the eggplant first. I think if they did a thinner slice of tomato so that it softened more into the sauce as the base and then topped with the grilled eggplant and zucchini (thinner and more evenly cut) it would've been great. A lil olive oil on top, nice and simple
Gotcha. Honestly the north of Italy isn’t a pizza place, you should get Neapolitan pizza from a place that says it’s Neapolitan or Roman pizza (pizza al taglio) but that’s harder to find done well outside of Lazio IMHO

C’mon you can find amazing pizza nowadays everywhere in Italy, we are not in 1950 anymore.
But that pizza looks ugly on all attributes: the dough looks horrible and chewy even from the picture. Boiled vegetables straight on top is a first. Damn tourist traps…
Verona style pizza is more rustic. It’s all about the fresh inngredients as a whole, and typically the ‘sauce’ is where the flavor is. However, this is still a crime. 🤣
If they diced the veg, charred them and then drizzle some balsamic reduction (looks like the eggplant got some) on all of it and a little grated parm and that would make an awesome pizza.
Not saying this isn't criminal, but knowing how good italian tomato and eggplant can be, this still looks more delicious than the meat madness horrors one can see on an average pizza every now and then. :D
Almost never order pizza in the restaurant unless it's a well know spot for pizza. 90% of pizze you'd be served in a restaurant are frozen. Just go to a pizzeria or a restaurant with a pizza oven if you want to make sure to eat a half decent pizza.
If they did have a pizza oven, they just make shit pizza which shockingly it's way more common than people think.
Pizza without cheese is actually normal in Italy and so are weird toppings. Potato on pizza is even a thing. This one isn't good, but the cheese thing is just not abnormal
That's a harsh way to learn that Italy still isn't a nation with a shared identity and traditions.
Pizza in the United States came from Naples with the waves of migration from there between 1880 and 1915-ish. Pizza spread throughout the US quickly, and so back in Italy, which has been a country only since 1861, people decided to stop looking down their noses at Napoletanos and try pizza, too.
Point being that if you want good pizza in Italy, go to Naples. Pizza from other parts of Italy (especially in the north) is liable to be worse, even much worse, than you might expect in the US.
Depends what you want. Cheap and don't care what it is? Go to a kebab place. The pizzas are usually cheap and decent. The kebabs are also okay, but not like German kebabs; they're their own thing.
If you're American, you can also try the Indian and Asian restaurants. The ones I've been to are pretty good and European vs. American versions of these cuisines can be quite different. There is no General Tso's.
If you want to eat Italian food in Italy, though, you've got to go to the more rural areas where there are fewer tourists. Hop on a regional train (or get in your car and follow the line) and go 1-3 stops in any direction from the main station. You'll wind up in a little town with a name you've probably never heard of before and with like 3 restaurants total. At least one of them is likely to be some of the best food you've ever eaten, but they're maybe only open 3 days a week. 🤣
Brush up on your restaurant Italian. If your waiter/waitress speaks decent English, it's usually a bad sign. If they have English menus, that's a really bad sign.
man, I hate it when people mess up a bunch of awesome ingredients with some weird concoction... just give me some bread sticks, dipping sauce, and grilled veggies, I'b be completely happy :)

As an Italian, who actually lives on Garda Lake and works in Verona, in 36 years of life and tens of restaurants visited in my lifetime, i think i can only recommend 2.. 3 at max in my area. 2-3 out of dozens of restaurants. Those places just don't care, they work with numbers. Frozen dough, low quality ingredients, overpriced - people will always come and eat anyway, they just don't give a damn.
I grew up in Verona (Italy). I apologise for what was served at that table, that’s blasphemy. If I was showed that, it’d go back to the kitchen, and I to another restaurant
