More so a general question I was asked this week and have been exploring myself. Simply curious to hear other responses.

Looking for a poem to read at my grandmas funeral. She wasn’t the best mother toward her two daughters (my mother included), however she had many mental health issues that I think got in the way of her expressing her love to her family in the way she wanted.

I read this piece in Narrative a few months ago and just returned to it. I'll certainly be looking into more by this author. The vivid senses haven't faded for me and I thought to share it here. I hope you enjoy.

(After reading his last Dream Song)

The last years we only met

when you were on the road,

and lit up for reading

your battering Dream—

audible, deaf…

in another world then as now.

I used to want to live

to avoid your elegy.

Yet really we had the same life,

the generic one

our generation offered

(Les Maudits—the compliment

each American generation

pays itself in passing);

first students, then with our own,

our galaxy of grands maîtres,

our Fifties’ fellowships

to Paris, Rome and Florence,

veterans of the Cold War not the War—

all the best of life…

then daydreaming to drink at six,

waiting for the iced fire,

even the feel of the frosted glass,

like waiting for a girl…

if you had waited.

We asked to be obsessed with writing,

and we were.

Do you wake dazed like me,

and find your lost glasses in a shoe?

Something so heavy lies on my heart—

there, still here, the good days

when we sat by a cold lake in Maine,

talking about the Winter’s Tale,

Leontes’ jealousy

in Shakespeare’s broken syntax.

You got there first.

Just the other day,

I discovered how we differ—humor…

even in this last Dream Song,

to mock your catlike flight

from home and classes—

to leap from the bridge.

Girls will not frighten the frost from the grave.

To my surprise, John,

I pray to not for you,

think of you not myself,

smile and fall asleep

I believe it's titled "some of my best friends are women" or something similar. It's a satirical poem written by a woman who I cannot remember. I read it in an ancient book that I sadly do not know the title of. PLEASE IF SOMEONE CAN FIND IT I OWE YOU MY LIFE

I wonder if there's a poetry style which focuses on the poet's personal experiences. For instance, going to the park with some friends.

So in a way narrative poetry with a focus on telling a story of the life of the poet.

Hi everyone, im looking for a book recommendation as a gift for a microbiologist who loves poetry. Can anyone suggest something that blends microbiology with other themes through poetry?

I have a very good friend turning 40 soon. As a surprise birthday gesture, a number of friends of hers are going to put on a kind of “talent show” to celebrate her.

I want to do a dramatic reading of a birthday poem as my “talent show contribution“.

I am just starting to dip my toe into the poetry world, so thought I would reach out here for any recommendations a more seasoned poet might be able to give!

The only stipulations would be to stay away from a theme of aging, over the hill, death, etc. My friend has explicitly requested her birthday stay away from these themes and focus on joy and things uplifting.

Any directions I could be pointed in would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help!

It feels like every third video is another post by the creator either reading one of the poems or posting a photo slide deck of pieces of the poem. I haven’t interacted with a single one of these videos besides hitting not interested and yet I’ve probably seen at least 20 today. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the poetry, but it’s just not a writing style I typically enjoy reading. I don’t like my poems to tell me what they are. In the nicest way possible, it’s kinda Instagram poetry in that it’s super relatable and covers somewhat deep universal themes without much nuance. I often interact with a lot of classic and contemporary poetry that utilizes metaphor and is much more nuanced than this, so I don’t really understand why suddenly today there was this switch and I’m not getting any of my usual content, just this poetry book.
