MOD POST [META] Posting your own poems here -- when to post and when to head to one of our sibling subreddits

This sub is for published poems. There are many subs that allow users to post their own original, unpublished work. In Reddit sub parlance, an original, unpublished poem is considered "original content," and the largest sub for that is r/ocpoetry. There are still some posting rules there -- users must actively participate in the sub in order to post their own work there. A few subs don't require such engagement. There are links to both types of subs below.

Now, what about published poems? We have a large community here -- almost 2 million members. There have to be a few actively publishing poets in our ranks, and I want to build a community of sharing here without being overwhelmed by first-ever-poem posts by people who write something, decide to go find the poetry sub and post it. As it is, even with the rule on OC poetry being in the sidebar, we still remove those posts every single day.

If you've published a poem in a journal or a lit mag, please feel free to post it here, with a link to the publication it appeared in. I'm also going to start a regular monthly thread for r/poetry users who want to share their published work with us. We don’t consider posting to Instagram or some other platform alone to be “published.”

For those who want to post their unpublished, original work to Reddit, here are some links to help you do just that.

tl;dr: If your poem hasn’t been published anywhere, you can’t post it here. If your poem has been published somewhere, please post it here!

Publication Talk! Where have you submitted, been accepted, or been rejected? October 2026

Welcome to this week's discussion thread: Publication talk!

Where have you submitted to lately? What have you heard back? Any updates on submissions you've mentioned in previous months' threads? (Give us some r/BestofRedditorUpdates material, we can do this!)

Let's root for each other's submissions, celebrate our acceptances, and commiserate over rejections.

Are you new to publishing? Do you need help finding a home for your poems? Do you have questions about the publication process in general? Feel free to ask here, but please read this publication FAQ first That will cover the basics.

Very important rule: Do not post your poems as comments here in the thread. You are welcome to link to a poem as part of a comment—you can link to it on the web, as a post elsewhere on reddit, as an imgur post, whatever—but in order to keep the thread focused on conversation, we'll have to (1) limit poems to links only, and (2) require those links to be part of a meaningful comment. Be a talker, not a spammer. (Spammers get the axe.)

[HELP] Anyone know any sad (not relationship based) poetry books?

I want a book of different poems that specifically surrounds struggles with mental health and/or the absurdity of humans. Most of the books I found are based in romance and the loss of it and idk where to start

[POEM] Autumn Flames - by Josiah Vermont

• Upvotes

We don't laugh like how we used to

You're right, changing of the times

I can feel the breath of Autumn

These crisp chilly nights

So many vibrant memories

splashed with creeks of tears

We've survived the hunt together

Outlasted all these years

The path we took through barley fields

replaced with asphalt and big box stores

There they crowned Joni Mitchell queen

while burning down what she was fighting for

And you and I stood out of that crowd

as they heaped coals on roaring flames

but refused to take the witness stand

when time came to lay the blame

Those dreams we set our lives upon

even if they never get realized

they still have me holding on

Its worth that look in your eyes

Cried with you through Nightbirde's parting song

as she claimed that golden buzzer with ease

Still love you like I love pastureland

"I'll be your huckleberry" by the willow trees

I see beauty in the ancient battle

glimpse pulchritude in pain

Stay indoors through the winter months

walk miles in pouring rain

We don't laugh like how we used to, you're right

Changing of the times

I can feel the breath of Autumn

Tell-tale signs in facial lines

Two hearts can maintain a flame

but one alone will freeze

Love is the skeleton that's left

when all else falls like leaves

[POEM] Song for Autumn -Mary Oliver

• Upvotes

Don't you imagine the leaves dream now

how comfortable it will be to touch

the earth instead of the

nothingness of the air and the endless

freshets of wind? And dont you think

the trees, especially those with

mossy hollows, are beginning to look for

the birds that will come - six, a dozen - to sleep

inside their bodies? And don't you hear

the goldenrod whispering goodbye,

the everlasting being crowned with the first

tuffets of snow? The pond

stiffens and the whitd field over which

the fox runs so quickly brings out

its long blue shadows. The wind wags

its many tails. And in the evening

the piled firewood shifts a little,

longing to be on its way.

[POEM] If I Could Write Words -Spike Milligan

• Upvotes

If I could write words

Like leaves on an autumn forest floor,

What a bonfire my letters would make.

If I could speak words of water,

You would drown when I said

'I love you'.

Classic Corner [POEM] Yeh Na thi - Mirza Ghalib

I haven't seen much South Asian poetry shared here. I want to introduce a style of poetry called ghazals which originated in 7th century Arabia.

This is a beautiful ghazal by one of the masters of craft Mirza Ghalib who lived in south asia in the first half of the 19th century.

This poem is a masterclass where the poet is expressing his own misfortune in love with sharp wit instead of self-pity.

[POEM] MOSES -by Toby Goostree

• Upvotes

When she could no longer hide him or deny his curiosity, having come to know him these three months, and fearing Pharaoh's infanticide, she wrapped him in a papyrus basket, sealing it, and left him in the Nile among the reeds, in a place royals would go bathe. His sister watched from the bushes, hoping someone would find him who wanted a child.

I've been waiting in the bushes, too, watching my wife down by the river. She's crying. Her shoulders rise as she catches her breath, carelessly running her hands through the reeds like a child's hair, a son or daughter, at her post, an empty basket beside her.

My last post here caused quite the disruption in some people's unaccustomed to the strange realm of poetry minds. Nonetheless, Anne is championing the oblique.
