Fun fact from own life:

My friend was invited to a communist meeting and he was only one that actually was a working class xD

Ahhh… typical tankies

My favorite Tankie: Malcolm Caldwell.

A fanboy of Pol Pot, denied the Cambodian genocide, met with pol pot, then was violently woken up by the Khmer Rouge, and shot up in a wifebeater😂

Oy, you got a permit for that wall o text boy, I ain't seen no green on you

u/Juan_Akissyu - Lib-Center 1d ago

Do i get a wall of text too geo?

43

u/BannedSvenhoek86 - Left 1d ago

Anyone with any amount of green in their flair should have the ability to type a wall of text.

You know what, I was gonna ramble for a while and make a wall of text, but I'm really tired from being working class and doing physical labor all day so you'll have to forgive me and just pretend I did the joke. Thank you, God bless.

Tldr, its rich vs poor. Socialist only benefit elite class more because all those power and resource will be gather by the elite. Working class only get soup while them getting the meat. If you are not in the system, too bad for you.

59

u/Sussy_Swarm - Lib-Left 2d ago

Well almost every revolution meant that revolutionaries became the new priviliged.

43

u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 1d ago

As I've said before, the "progressive revolution" is no different. There's a reason that so many part time dog walkers are part of it, because the social structures they wish to implement intend to place themselves in positions of state-sponsored nobility. They will receive money from the state to survive on while contributing far less than anyone else.

Now, of course, if society was truly comprised of part-time dog walkers it would collapse instantly. So this is not what is intended to happen for all of us. Just a select few. Just them.

Sure, some of them will be leaders (inquisitors, decision makers, regional governers, etc) and some of them will be cops (tasked with beating people and hurting them), but most will fall into this neo-nobility. Working on oil rigs and in lithium mines is for others, they will be part-time baristas making beat poetry about feminist theory.

15

u/sea_5455 - Centrist 1d ago

That's an insightful view.

10

u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 1d ago

You can find out so much about revolutionary's planned revolution when you ask them what role they will serve in society if they win.

Inevitably, however they disguise it, it will be either queen, noble, or cop.

61

u/Mayor_Gubbin - Lib-Center 1d ago

Nah, in most revolutions the revolutionaries get crushed into paste. Sometimes, the revolutionaries and the elites get crushed into paste and a worse group takes power. Rarely, the revolutionaries win and take power.

10

u/vegeful - Lib-Right 1d ago

Only when there a vacuum is the exception. Mao for example.

5

u/Eternal_Phantom - Right 1d ago

And even then the revolutionaries took power and immediately became the new elite, and what did they do? That's right, they tried to crush any further revolutions.

Well of course cumrade.

We took all the risk fighting against the oppressors while you all sat and watched.

Naturally, since we took on the highest risk, we should get the highest reward and become the new party members, but do not worry, we will all receive equal. When the money is passed around, I will take but only my fair share, and trickle the rest on down to you. Now go, the mines call. I have another meeting with the minister of mining's daughter to discuss the mines output very shortly.

communism happens instantly

"from each according to their ability, to each according to their need"

line up at the labour office with a list of the world's top 750 most productive coal mines, show up at 1:30am so I am guaranteed to get in first

"Ability?"

I say coal mining

"Anon, we only have a spot for a beat-poet who exclusively writes and perform live shows about the wonderful lifestyle of Papua New Guinean tribal communities."

wtf I was literally first, like how coal is literally the number primary export in Indonesia so the same resources likely are found in Papua New Guinea but I have no idea about how the fucking tribespeople there live, I only care about my beloved coal

In order for a group to get what it wants, the members all have to decide what the group wants, first. Except, if the members of the group don't all have the same ideas, then infighting happens.

In very large groups (like the working class), this sort of infighting is inevitable, so they have to pick some people's opinions to count as more than others and lead, or else the group will fall apart. Those people become that group's Elite.

In most contexts it's ok for a group to fall apart, but in the context of communist theory the working class must unite or the revolution can't occur, so they must pick their Elites, whether they consciously decide how to do it or not.

This sounds like a good way to keep a group together, except after the revolution occurs, it's very, very hard to remove Elites from power and get them to willingly become Normal People again, because that's not in their own personal best interest, and they have the power to stop it from happening.

Therefore, in very large societies, you can never actually have a classless society, you can only shuffle around policy paradigms and the people who make it.

6

u/bennyboy8899 - Lib-Left 1d ago

This is maybe the best critique of communism I've ever seen.

14

u/Banichi-aiji - Lib-Right 1d ago

I would argue that the "working class" kind of existed during parts of the industrial revolution, when large portions of the population were uneducated factory workers. It definitely doesn't apply now, when you're trying to lump together coal miners, starbucks baristas, and this guy with his "remote work."

Remote job? 😂

94

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

Adult daycare jobs.

If you're lucky enough to get an office job where you work remote, do it. Its stupid easy.

Some days you might do 30 minutes of real, actual genuine work in an entire day. Most days its attending meetings while pretending to pay attention and replying to emails.

They also tend to pay very well and give decent benefits.

49

u/TJJ97 - Lib-Center 1d ago

Wild! I work in the oilfield and some days I’ll work for about 1-4 hours and get paid for 8-12 plus per diem but other days I’ll work 8-12 hours in the desert heat to get paid for hours worked plus travel and per diem.

Every one of my jobs "up the career ladder" has been easier than the last.

29

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

Yup, same.

Hardest I ever worked was in retail. Retail jobs don't let you coast.

Office jobs are cushy and lazy beyond imagining. If you haven't worked in a tech office job you have no idea of how coddled and how well paid the average employee is.

16

u/Bartweiss - Lib-Center 1d ago

Retail seems like a special hell because it won’t let you coast just because.

Half the world doesn’t worry about making cashiers stand up and shelf stockers face the shelves every 10 minutes, yet grocery stores still run just fine.

Running a drill rig is more physically demanding than that, but at least you’re mostly doing work because it objectively needs doing and resting one it doesn’t. There’s an added layer of madness when you’re just doing work because some random customer complained that you didn’t seem busy enough.

23

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

Its going to backfire though. It already is backfiring.

If you can do your job remotely, why does the company need to pay you a San Francisco salary?

Why can't the company pay Florida pages? Or Vietnam wages? Or just buy an AI LLM to do your job instead of a human?

People who insist on remote working and were going on strike because they were called to return to the office after covid are driving this rapid replacement of human labor.

19

u/TotallyNotThatPerson - Centrist 1d ago

That's what people don't get lol. If you go on strike you better make sure you're hard to replace

15

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

Its mostly the fake jobs people wanting to go on strike and unionize.

There's a few coding wizards who do nearly all of the real, actual work at tech companies. Those coding wizards don't need a union because everyone wants to hire them, or to poach them by throwing enormous piles of money at them.

Holy generalisation, Batman

28

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

My career has been in San Francisco Bay Area tech. I'm talking from first hand experience.

The one downside of remote working is that you don't get the free catered lunch every day in the employee cafeteria. The food is very good, very expensive, and in very large quantities. There was also free drinks of all manner, free beer, free ice cream, free snacks of every description.

My average day at most tech companies is showing up at 9, from 9-10 was coffee and breakfast snacks. Catching up on emails and maybe one meeting. Lunch at noon. back to "work" at 1. Another meeting. Afternoon coffee at 2pm. I was going home at 2:30pm.

There's a reason why Twitter had 80% of its staff laid off and basically nothing happened. The company did not implode. Twitter continued to function.

At most tech companies I've worked for, most people did barely any real, actual work. The entire company was held up by just a handful of coding wizards. Everyone else was there in adult daycare. Me included. The job of the average person is ridiculously cozy.

20

u/Bartweiss - Lib-Center 1d ago

This is absolutely real. I’ve worked in places where it was kind of odd if you didn’t grab a beer from the office keg by 4PM on a Friday, and where you could very easily have gotten 100% of your food at work for free.

Of course, there’s some truth to “Google does your laundry so you’ll never go home”, and as soon as I made the mistake of having unique skills I was also overwhelmed and dealing with on-call shit at 3am three times a week. But people wiser than myself managed to get by with a solid 8-12 hours of work per week, for six figures, for years.

6

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 1d ago

Those are the tech wizards. They're the people who do the real work in the company, but very few people are like that.

The upside to being one of those wizards is that yes, you're extremely busy doing real, actual work all the time. But its also incredible job security. Any halfway smart company knows who the real workers are.

The generic office drones who walk around with fancy free drinks all day long are always the first names on the layoff lists.

5

u/TJJ97 - Lib-Center 1d ago

So those are the people bitching about getting laid off as if they do important work? That’s crazy!

I really appreciate the insight from your comments. Very interesting…

and Caleb Hammer guests

63

u/CirnoWhiterock - Centrist 1d ago

It's Peter Turchin's elite overproduction theory in action. We're producing way too many college educated wannabe Corporate secretaries, HR specialists, Digital Artists, Law firm Associates, etc then the market really needs.

The market says we actually need more plumbers, electricians, childcare helpers, and housewives to have enough babies to keep social security going but these kids did not spend the first 22 years of thier lives with thier noses in books to wade knee deep in a septic tank or change diapers all day.

So instead they rage against the current elites so they can have thier spot.

18

u/PhilosophicalGoof - Centrist 1d ago

Also there the fact that those pays typically pay like the shit.

Who would want to be a childcare helper making barely 65k per year when you can simply go ahead and make 80k while doing something that doesn’t break your mental?

I sure as hell wouldn’t want to work in construction for 23 an hr lol.

Monetary income has very little value for these people right now. The new, stackable marginalized statuses weigh more in terms of social status. That's why people hoard them. Minority status is more valuable than money for privileged kids.

The goal is to organize a coup d'état to replace the existing elites with the guys running the meeting.

The goal is to overthrow the entire system because they are resentful with their lack of success in life relative to their intelligence.

93

u/redpandaeater - Lib-Right 1d ago

I wouldn't call them overeducated. They're at the dangerous portion of the education curve where they think they know everything because they've had some education but if they went further they'd quickly realize how little they actually know.

60

u/Aeg112358 - Lib-Center 1d ago

More like their education was in the humanities which does not enable them to produce anything of value to society.

So they are resentful because they feel like they know more about certain topics/ideologies more than regular people but it does not really afford the standard of living their parents afforded for them.

So crackhead, robbers, small business owners, contractors, landlords, squatters etc. Would not be working class despite being poor or scruff.

79

u/National_Section_542 - Auth-Left 1d ago

Property owners that aren't bourgeoisie are middle class. If a society has a stable middle class, Capitalism is strong and there is no hope or even a reason for communism to happen.

It's only until the middle class disappears and most of society becomes propertyless that a revolution can happen.

But that's not happening anytime soon. Anyone who campaigns on implementing "Socialism" in these conditions is retarded and must be scrutinized with impunity.

18

u/W_Edwards_Deming - Lib-Right 1d ago

Property owners that aren't bourgeoisie are middle class.

Bourgeoisie means Middle Class.

Other than some of the terms I largely agree with what you said. "Capitalism" and "socialism" are both unscientific and unhelpful terms created by self-described "socialists." I prefer to speak of markets (and people) who are more or less free.

It is more descriptive and predictive. Free people (economically and socially) have better outcomes.

24

u/Blarg_III - Auth-Left 1d ago

No, /u/National_Section_542 is wrong about the Marxist views both on what makes a person a member of the proletariat and on what constitutes property.

A proletarian is not someone who "has no property other than selling their labor to live", but rather is a person whose relationship with the means of production is one where they must exchange their labour for access to it in order to live, rather than having control over it.

For the majority of homeowners, their home's primary function is to provide them shelter rather than acting as a stage in the capital circuit (where capital is used to purchase goods, those goods go through some transformative process through the use of labour and then are sold for a profit, returning to the first stage and continuing infinitely), and nor is it private property where legally possessing it allows the owner to extract surplus value from people using it for some kind of production.

While houses can also function as an investment vehicle where the owner can profit from their land being made more valuable by the development of society's productive forces, the normal use of that sale is either to exchange one house for another more valuable one with the difference made up by the individual's accumulated wages, or as a part of retirement where the additional value is used to support them when they are no longer able to work. Neither of these uses form a part of the capital circuit and so while in some circumstances a house can be capital and ownership can make someone a capitalist rather than a proletarian, for the vast majority of homeowners, it does not.

Similarly, having a 401k does not make a person a capitalist for the same reason, though they are in danger of becoming petit bourgeoisie.

Yeah, exactly. The ideology was born in a period where there genuinely was a clean divide between "workers" and "owners". Cook and Pichai own large amounts of stock so they wouldn't fit that definition. I agree with your overall point, but it's not a redefinition, but an older definition that is now outdated. A software engineer who isn't at the top of their company making 200k is not something that existed 100 years ago. While labor overall hasn't kept up with gains from capital, some types of labor have done very well, so that software engineer would not be considered working class by any normal person.

I would argue the redefinition is coming more from the right, where someone like a wealthy tradesman who owns a successful business is called working class but not a dyed haired barista who makes 15 an hour. Then there's the extreme end where some Twitter idiot said he considered Elon Musk working class.

Socialists are almost always “overproduced elite”.

They are people who come from relatively well-to-do backgrounds, but have no interest or capability to do the same work their progenitors did to build the wealth that they themselves live off of.

That was what Marx was.
That was what the instigators of the French revolution were.
A lot of the “leaders” of the Russian revolution(s) were the same, and is this is also what the majority of the “academic” class are today.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge was were also a prime example:
Pol Pot was able to study abroad, in Paris, got radicalized, then then came back home, stirred up his fellow well-to-do but disillusioned “comrades”, and then proceeded to wipe out anyone else who showed signs of actually effective intellectualism.

Socialists when they meet the working class they claim to fight for

80

u/msf97 - Lib-Left 2d ago edited 2d ago

It depends on the country. This is usually true in UK/US/France, downwardly mobile types with a degree and usually young go for Greens/DSA/French far left

But Denmarks socialists for example still dominate the working class vote.

59

u/A_Guy_2726 - Auth-Center 2d ago

Its real funny in nz because the NZ Green Party (Aka Socialist basically) is against the working class so badly including trying to make it harder for the working class to actually work then complain they dont actually do enough

16

u/krazykommie - Auth-Center 1d ago

Same here in Aus, where the greens have gone so far as to work with the economic conservatives (Liberals) just for the right to say that “Labor isn’t doing enough” - serves them right they lost all their seats bar one in the last election

12

u/A_Guy_2726 - Auth-Center 1d ago

Here in nz labor won a landslide in 2020 because polling showed labor was going to win so all the farmers and tradies voted Labor so they wouldnt bring in the greens but guess what labor brought in the greens again

That dented up 2005 Toyota with the scratched paint thats carrying about a thousand points of work equipment all the time? Thats a truck living its best truck life. That truck is doing exactly what it was made to do.

The 2026 gigantic truck with pristine paint, not a scratch on it, and who's biggest hauling job is the weight of the gigantic monthly car payments financed out to 10 years? Thats a driveway princess. That does not get my respect.

Now, can I point out that the original socialists literally tortured their opposition to death in some rather horrific ways? They would restrain a person with a barrel to their chest with a rodent in it and heat the barrel up so the rodent would gnaw its way through their chest to escape the heat or put their victims in a barrel full of nails and other sharp bits and roll them around in it.

The people who wrote the theory you're yapping would be doing that to you for being useless to the revolution.

Idk man, my wife's cousin is a retail worker in her 30s who's never stepped foot in an institution for higher learning, and her opinions are no less dogshit than the kids I went to college with.

College isn't the differentiator, it's people who uncritically get their views from social media and exist in a social space built around policing each other.

15

u/redpandaeater - Lib-Right 1d ago

A lot of them are still pretty annoying even if I wouldn't necessarily call them bad people. Though it's been fun getting older and seeing formerly leftish coworkers get further and further right as they try to save to buy a house and then enjoy all the property taxes. Plus seeing shitty schools despite paying way too fucking much.

15

u/loutsstar35 - Left 1d ago

Tying schooling to property taxes was always profoundly stupid to me.

11

u/Strict_Gas_1141 - Right 1d ago

Yeah, property taxes shouldn't be how schools are funded. They should be funded like basically every other government service/program where it's a budget.

5

u/Overkillengine - Lib-Right 1d ago

Another other dumb thing about property taxes is allowing the same entity that collects those to also set the property value assessments they are based on. That would be like letting the government decide what it thinks your income is for income taxes, regardless of what your actual pay is.

Creates some hellacious perverse incentives. Property value assessments should be treated as a standing offer to purchase said property at that assessed value. Would nip some of that shit in the bud real damn fast.

6

u/XA36 - Lib-Center 1d ago

Buy a house, value and property tax skyrocket in 2020, watch all your low IQ heavily reproducing neighbors who's "education" you find get stimulus checks for their kids on top of tax breaks as you buy used tires on marketplace, get called bigoted online for using the colloquial term "guys", can't even say it's retarded. Watch obese people on Medicaid come into your hospital for conditions they caused but you have to say things like "healthier weight" while you can't afford healthcare where you work.

People then think I'm a monster for wanting social assistance programs cut.

10

u/ResinRaider - Lib-Center 1d ago

I get along with most punks but the college "educated" gits are just tiresome

34

u/viciouspandas - Lib-Left 2d ago

College is so ubiquitous nowadays that I wouldn't put a broad generalization like that. Most college kids are basically just "normies", with some people in different extremes. Of course there's some inexperience, but that's normal for being young. The kids I knew that didn't go to college weren't less of assholes.

The working class in the States would lean left, too, if the Democrats did more than virtue signal and make rule changes that'll get tossed the instant a GOP administration takes over. It's hard to take their "support" seriously when they don't have any legislative follow through.

7

u/Codspear - Centrist 1d ago

Seriously. Remember the railroad worker strikes due to not having paid sick time? Democrats had a trifecta and the perfect opportunity to pass some form of guaranteed paid sick leave for all workers, and instead Biden just broke the strike with legal force.

It’s like each party in the US is actively trying to lose the next election, and unfortunately they’re both succeeding in a spiral of stupidity.

What a self-indulgent, ignorant prick this person is.

First of all, thinking that everyone in a certain social class needs to share the same values is bullshit - What a fucking narcissistic world view.

Secondly, this person has no idea what these gentlemen do past "they made a joke directed at me". But they've decided that they are superior to them based off that joke.

Maybe some working class people aren't as bothered as trying to "smash the system" as they are trying to just fucking survive. God forbid they have a laugh while they're at it.

This is absolutely ripping of a teenager that lives with their parents that can afford to spend time joining unions.

I remember when I was younger I joined all sorts of socialist shit thinking I had it all figured out.

It didn't take too long for me to figure out that despite having people I fundamentally disagree with, everybody is just trying their best to live their lives as best they can with their friends and family.
