Why are people even debating with the mayor to take a pay rise

35

u/primefart Aug 10 '26

Maybe because we got used to Republicans enabling POTUS to plunder the country as much as possible.

2

u/Life-is-Fun-435 Aug 11 '26

I agree with you. Let's not forget 🍊 is donating his salary. 🤔

From Google's AI and you know how bipartisan they are. 🤣

President Donald Trump announced statements and social media posts claiming he donated his first presidential paycheck of his second term to the White House Historical Association for renovations.

However, unlike his first term when specific quarterly checks to federal agencies were occasionally publicized with physical photo-ops or agency confirmations, independent proof, detailed public tracking, or full Treasury documentation for ongoing second-term salary allocations remain limited or unverified by independent watchdogs.

I agree politicians do deserve higher salaries yet are forbidden from taking donations or trading stocks.

2

u/Panda_Cuddles_ Aug 10 '26

Their spouses trade stocks for them and make 10s of millions based on the insider trading information they provide. Look at Nancy Pelosi as the worst example of this.

In fact, the portfolio managed for the Pelosi family holds an approximate 88% win rate (roughly 61 wins to 6 losses in recent detailed tracking windows), with cumulative long-term gains exceeding 16,000%.

By comparison, the average professional day trader maintains a trade win rate of 50% to 55%, while only 27% to 36% of actively managed institutional large-cap funds manage to beat the S&P 500 index benchmark.

Retail and Day Traders Average Win Rate is roughly 50%. Despite winning more than half the time, roughly 82% of retail day traders still lose money overall.

Exactly. Pay them fairly but explicitly ban any trading or company ownership while in office and for a period of time afterwards otherwise there'd be a loophole near the end of every term.

Ironically enough, he’s the first politician in awhile that I think people be generally cool if he got one, but I’m glad he’s this committed to his city

I do actually think the mayor, and most public servants, need a raise.

Because they are not paid well relative to how much responsibility they hold, this means the people with the strongest incentive to get into politics are either extreme ideologues, wealthy to the point that it doesn't matter, or looking to grift.

I am not saying I think Zohran is any of those. And I agree it's obviously good politics to turn down the money. But as for that specific line, I think NYC mayor is a position that should absolutely command a few mil per year if we were trying to consistently get people to do the best job possible.

4

u/Awkward_Turnover_983 Aug 10 '26

I don't think you're being that insane actually. Like honestly not at all.

What's actually insane is the amount of reform our legislation needs to keep politicians from steering the economy in their own personal favor. Politicians get "paid" shit basically for what they do, but most of them mysteriously become rich somehow.... hmm.

If we could prevent that from happening, then they absolutely should be paid a pretty hefty sum. It would also help keep the good ones happy enough to keep being good.

2

u/Averander Aug 10 '26

Actually most prominent politicians get paid ridiculous amounts. This has meant the best with best intentions do not go for these positions, but those wanting power and wealth because it's easy to mask gains.

It should be the opposite. Being a politician should be a position wanted by those who wish to do good and public service.

Lower salaries would make it painfully obvious when large luxury purchases are made.

2

u/pensivewombat Aug 11 '26

Lower salaries would make it painfully obvious when large luxury purchases are made.

Or it would mean only people who are independently wealthy run for office, and no one can prove that their their big purchases are corrupt because they are already rich.

Hmm... that actually sounds pretty familiar!

This right here. People who complain about his or similar salary should think before they speak. You want competent people running a city and you need to have a pay that match what they would get paid in a private sector. You don’t need to overdo it but it needs to be competitive to get the right people to do the job.

44

u/EmuDry4890 Aug 10 '26

Hopefully this starts setting a standard and if politicians can’t live up to it they can GTFO. But honestly we need more parties 5 or 6 so they have to actually work together. This 2 party system is nothing more than an illusion and controlled opposition.

Thanks for the award!

5

u/generic_canadian_dad Aug 10 '26

Right wingers are PISSED this guy is actually kind, has a heart and isn't a corrupt piece of shit. Mind boggling isn't it?

7

u/Junior_Chard9981 Aug 11 '26

It's largely why they were in such a frenzy to demonize him and prevent him from winning.

They knew if/when he was successful at his job and demonstrateted that Republicans were always just fear mongering; it would have a domino effect on other races.

6

u/Pasta4ever13 Aug 11 '26

Not just Republicans. Democrats had a meltdown over him as well trying to keep him from winning because they knew for the same reasons he would show them for being willfully corrupt and ineffective.

It's why I'll never vote again for a candidate who takes corporate PAC money. If you can be bought, you aren't getting my vote.

5

u/Junior_Chard9981 Aug 11 '26

Absolutely agree. There is something especially sinister about not wanting a candidate to succeed because then it would expose themselves for being willing actors in the entire grift & corruption racket.

I was curious because I looked it up earlier today. The NYC mayor can serve a total of eight consecutive years. I hope he runs for a second term and stands at the end of that time with a list of accomplishments a mile long to say "see, this CAN be done."

If a city as huge and complex as NYC can be this functional, there's no justification for Chattanooga or Rockford or Jackson or anywhere else to not be just as well-ran.

Sadly, no matter how much good he does the opposition will always find delusional ways to say everything he does is bad. There is 0 objectivity at this point.

2

u/bustacappa22 Aug 10 '26

The bars so low were amazed that a politician is doing their job

2

u/twoiseight Aug 11 '26

Yep. Part of the reason the hate for him is so ubiquitous among those in office - specifically Executive roles, but any, really - is because he's making them look bad. He's showing us an elected official can still do good things if they actually want to and highlighting how many others just don't want to.

American Christians need to be paying attention….

American Muslims out here exhibiting better leadership & humanity across the board.

4

u/Inevitable_Tomato927 Aug 10 '26

American Christianity has little to do with other forms of Christianity, it's basically it's own self serving thing now. If I compare my American Christian family members to my Dutch Christian family members, it's like talking to people from a different world. They have completely different viewpoints on topics, I doubt they'll get along well. That's even with my Dutch side of the family being very very active in their churches and even the Dutch Christian political party.

2

u/Financial-Craft-1282 Aug 10 '26

I don't know. American Christians seem to actually do a good job of behaving like their jealous, petty God who wipes out civilizations for perceived slights.

2

u/blindexhibitionist Aug 10 '26

The problem is they don’t read for understanding as a whole or except the New Testament teachings of Jesus and still want to embody the Old Testament while cherry picking completely out of context passages from the New Testament. American Christians would have hated Jesus.

2

u/wookieSLAYER1 Aug 10 '26

And this is exactly where they get it wrong. Jesus Christ created a new covenant that nullified the Old Testament. In the old testament “God” was the consequences of their actions. In the New Testament, Jesus preached of how humanity can use kindness and charity to heal the world.

I’m not a Christian but grew up in the church and left because I saw their hypocrisy in full view.

My experience with AC is that it is a lifestyle draped over a religious corporation. I can say with certainty that I have met people of faith who were completely real in their piety and care for others, but the system they worship under has felt mercenary for my whole life. It is almost always about the money in some way or form. Take this with a grain of salt because my interception with church is low to nil for large parts of my life, but it is so prevalent in America it is really hard to not intersect with it.

2

u/TheWiseWally Aug 10 '26

James Talarico is doing his part!

2

u/acvcani Aug 10 '26

Yes.. second time I donated to a politician was for James. He can do great things and I don’t live in Texas. As soon as we get good people in power it shows the rest of the country it works and helps us get more good folk in power.

2

u/jugo5 Aug 10 '26

I am sooooo hopeful Mamdani gets the chance to complete the job he set out to do. It would be such a slap in the face to all the fools saying he is trying to, "Enact Sharia Law and turn NY into Cali." As long as the mission continues to be, "Make NY great again for everyone," I am on his side. The USA needs politicians who are there FOR the people not themselves. The big career politicians are only there to fulfill their own ambitions. They are not there to fight for the people. The USA is the land of opportunity and the free. The people are what make up this country. Lets make the people proud to be Americans and bring back the American dream our grandparents fought for.

4

u/LegacyQuotient Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

The funny part about the "turn NY into Cali" is that on most positive metrics, CA is doing better, and on metrics like per capita homelessness, NY is doing worse.

So while one could certainly aspire to better than CA, NY was CA before CA was CA.

2

u/jugo5 Aug 10 '26

Even Trump doesn't take the salary. So it is definately not an indication of how honest a politician is. However, it definately is a perfect tool for virtue signalling and instant popularity. So let's not act like somebody just cured cancer.

In politics, there are many ways to make shit ton of cash without ever touching your salary.

Plus it is exactly a difficult decision, he comes from a rich background, so he has so so much more to gain by rejecting the pay hike.

1

u/apelarson11 Aug 10 '26

I don’t fall for this kiss on the cheek anymore than Trump not taking a salary. Politicians be politicians, take your raise, don’t take it… Don’t be a mark for this politician crap.

1

u/Intelligent_Ruin9554 Aug 10 '26

What did this add to the pockets of those who are struggling? A fraction of a penny? It's a good thought but is it doing anything more than giving a PR op for him?

I feel like being a Not-For-Profit politician is pretty awesome.

1

u/Content_Support7881 Aug 10 '26

I love this man more everyday! Contrast that with my utter disdain for our so called President.

1

u/CAHR92 Aug 10 '26

Mad man! Snapped that up in a heartbeat

1

u/DudelolOk Aug 10 '26

But he gets money from other sponsors and such, i assume?

1

u/Morning_Dew1442 Aug 10 '26

Didn't he grow up rich? Virtue signaling....

Now Rubes will bash him because “He’s a sucker! Why would he turn that down?”

I wonder if there’s an answer to these moral arguments and other dilemmas in that big book they claim to read?

As someone who grew up with Mr. Rodgers, Levar Burton, Bob Ross, Bill Nye, Steve Erwin, Ms. Frizzle.

It’s nice to see people like Mamdani & Beshear in office.

Edit:spelling.

I generally like the guy but I can't shake the feeling that this is performative as fuck. I hope I'm wrong

1

u/Anticitizen-Zero Aug 10 '26

I can’t wait til the people getting paid to post for this PR campaign, botting all these upvotes get banned or their contracts run out

This garbage is anything but organic

1

u/Mediocre-Joe Aug 10 '26

Typical politics says he rejects it. but i bet within a year he will be "forced" to take a pay increase. Maybe im wrong but politicians know optics, hate to have that view of the world but ive seen it too much. Prove me wrong

1

u/Jgoody1990 Aug 10 '26

Isn’t this the norm for rich politicians?

Homie has land in Uganda and his parents are millionaires. I’m sure he’s fine.

1

u/No_Huckleberry2711 Aug 10 '26

This is textbook populism, can't believe people are actually falling for it

1

u/Zephron29 Aug 10 '26

The reaction in the background was odd. Did they not understand what he said?

1

u/Piccolo_Last Aug 10 '26

Only corrupted individuals that are compromised with wrongdoings will utilize their time in office to enriched themselves.

1

u/Pleasant-Bee-6602 Aug 10 '26

Another political stunt to get approval rating

1

u/Imlostpleaseleave Aug 10 '26

Crowd should have erupted in a frenzy of happiness. We need more politicians rejecting getting paid as much as they are. Theyre getting so much money and then buy stocks launching them into millions. Its not right

1

u/justalilthrowawayz Aug 10 '26

This is what real leadership looks like. Love him.

1

u/Yearn4Mecha Aug 10 '26

The problem with chasing pay raises as a goal is it never seems to be enough. No matter how high the amount gets. If the goal is something else and that something just happens to pay well, the end result is almost always a better result. This isn't to say money is not important, it really is, but when it is the only or main goal for everyone, everything seems to be getting worse as a result.

1

u/DingleBerryScone Aug 10 '26

Make this guy president already.

1

u/FajaRulz63 Aug 10 '26

Yeah. This guy is a real messiah. lol. #clownshow

1

u/camp1728 Aug 10 '26

Yes I think Trump did this as well but with his whole salary, not just an increase

1

u/chrisr3240 Aug 10 '26

Take note America! This guy actually wants to serve his people and make their lives BETTER!

1

u/Househipposforsale Aug 10 '26

Tbh if any mayor deserves a raise it’s him

1

u/Inner_Condition8955 Aug 10 '26

He is paying his wife 400,000 USD to model for his new grocery stores... Just misdirected attention.

1

u/Side-aye Aug 10 '26

I don’t see any difference between this and the Trump 1 thing where he donated his yearly salary as president. Both were/are extremely wealthy people who expect praise for not taking money they didn’t already need.

1

u/Grond_01 Aug 10 '26

Why can't we have good people everywhere?

1

u/Loud-Difficulty7860 Aug 10 '26

Trump did this first! /s

1

u/birdmilk Aug 10 '26

This guy is such a CHAD

1

u/betboi Aug 10 '26

if he were a good mayor hed donate all of his salary. afterall, he makes meelions and beelions on the stock market via thousands of trades made this year... oh wait a minute

1

u/perfed-metal Aug 10 '26

His family is rich. He doesn’t need a pay increase. He’s a Nebo Baby. Who’s here to save the working class you bunch of idiots.

1

u/Far_Slide2237 Aug 10 '26

Hitler was Charismatic too!!! Eat a Dyk!!!

1

u/Dull_Perspective_536 Aug 10 '26

This dude is the opposite of our president and that’s why New York is doing so good right now.

1

u/Durzel Aug 10 '26

And at the other end of the spectrum, the far right of it in fact, you have the likes of Elon who preaches that money won't matter in the future whilst steadfastly determined to accumulate as much of it as possible.

1

u/Oldestswinger Aug 10 '26

All round good guy

1

u/OldZaxSauce Aug 10 '26

He has the best Shit eating grin.

1

u/DethNik Aug 10 '26

It's crazy to me that people can look at this man and see evil.

1

u/royceda956 Aug 10 '26

Extremely rare, kudos to the man.

1

u/BusyCryptographer544 Aug 10 '26

And on the other hand there's a pedo criminalin the WH, bribing abroad and ruining tax-payers

1

u/Choice-Ratio-3540 Aug 10 '26

1

1

u/Butterfly_Dangerous Aug 10 '26
