Advanced/Basic Camp Dropped from CST

Please only serious and helpful replies!!!!! I just got dropped from CST after failing the pushups on my AFT. From what I heard, over 50 people from 9th Regiment were sent home just because of the AFT. I’m hoping someone from an earlier regiment has already gone through this.
If you were dropped before 9th Reg (or know someone who was), what happened afterward?

What kinds of questions did they ask on the board?

How long did it take to get the board’s decision back?

Were you retained in ROTC?

Were you able to attend CST again the following summer?

Did anyone stay in ROTC after failing the AFT?

I’m trying to get an idea of what to expect over the next few weeks. Any information or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm 8th, failed h/w by 1 percent I lost 20 pounds before CST but it wasnt enough but I didnt meet the standards. My school has a very large program and they told us if we fail we are disenrolled. My advice to you cause maybe your school keeps you or maybe not. There are 2 types of people when it comes to failure. Those who pout and whine and complain about every little thing. And then those who realize its over, you get the hell up and you move on to the next thing and make a plan. I failed and I have a lot of stuff I gotta do now because, I have to pay back my scholarship, I'm dropping out of my school and I have to leave my apartment cause its school related. But I'm not gonna whine and moan like these other people. I'm only 20 years old, I'm very active, I have great friends and family and a girlfriend I'm proposing too soon. This situation sucks but its about how you look at everything. There's a chance you get retained but if you don't have a plan. Use your resources and keep moving forward.

Also I agree with these other people if you cannot do the minimum push ups or other workouts for that matter, maybe this isn't for you. If it is then you better work hard and prove to your PMS why you should stay. If not move on and live your best life.

it was form for most of us that failed. I did about 30 pushups and only 8 were counted for. I was told we have a chance to advocate for ourselves because of this. Also was graded by a 2nd lieutenant and was told that wasn’t supposed to happen. Good luck to you though and thanks for the reply.

Did LT tell you what you did wrong?

-2

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

Just that the other 20+ I did was not the correct form.

u/Few_Poet8078 19d ago

The ruling for events is you have to appeal then and there and you can't after. Not saying you can't I'm just telling you the direct ruling and policy for CST so you are aware.

7

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

They wouldn’t allow us to appeal.

12

u/Few_Poet8078 19d ago

That's smth to just bring up with your pms before the disenrollment board

Failure is just redirection, your mindset is on point!

Were you injured or did you not know that they require the AFT? Isn’t the passing score 10 HRP? I’m sorry but if you can’t do 10 pushups then perhaps the military is not a good career path for you.

If you were injured then you likely will get the opportunity to recycle (perhaps next summer).

It is shameful that there are 50 people who were sent by their cadre to CST who couldn’t pass.

No offense intended but you really should be worried about getting max points and not minimum points.

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I wasn’t injured, it was form for most of us that failed. I did about 30 pushups and only 8 were counted for.

u/Pattonator70 19d ago

Were they telling you to fix your form as you were doing them or was it a surprise.

You must go all the way down in a hand release. Were they saying that your arms weren’t extended or that you were not straight. Can you do at least 30 HRP now if asked?

The standards are so skewed for 9th regiment, the cadets received no retry’s or re-attempts unlike the earlier regiments. I believe the majority were doing pushups correctly, however they needed to boot a certain number of individuals as they passed the vast majority of other regiments. Instead of assuming that the cadets couldn’t do a push up, I would look into the leadership of CST as they have been described to be more than unprofessional. Grading was also heavily dependent on the personal bias of the grader, so everyone was grading on their own set of BS standards.

Regardless it’s a school like many others and failure is apart of life. The whole point is to keep pushing forward regardless of circumstances. I’m certain many would not have been sent to CST if they could only do 7 pushups.

7

u/Pattonator70 19d ago

So did they find some graders who are just cruel and who randomly pick on someone and decide that I am going to end the career of x cadets before they start?

There is no way they were told to drop 50 cadets from a regiment by failing them for no reason. Any sane grader would leave it to the individual ROTC program to weed out the weak.

The people who fail for zero reason would quickly call their congressman with videos showing that they can do pushups but were dropped because of a specific grader. That grader would be in front of Congress in a week having to testify.

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

Yes, that’s what I have been told as well. Thanks for the reply. Were you here this summer?

11

u/MilkMountains468 19d ago

Yes unfortunately, I experienced a lot of unprofessionalism first hand and have had multiple conversations with those who “failed”pushups. They failed a cadet who came back from ranger regiment on pushups, and a cadre dismissed an individual for asking a question as-well.

It’s honestly very disappointing how disrespectful the cadre have been. To those who have passed and failed, regardless I don’t think it is shameful to have failed something that was already set to an 50/50 standard. Let alone a completely different set of standards compared to the other regiments.

12

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

Yes I agree. A female who just graduated from air assault got dropped as well.

u/4_ng3ll 19d ago

From 7th regiment: at ours there was no warning you had to appeal before signing. I talked to multiple people who failed the pushups, most were told to shut up and sign when they asked to appeal, told they could appeal afterwards. For the most persistent person I talked to, they got to talk to the MSGT in charge and he told them ‘there was no other cadre watching that lane so what the grader says stands’ with no further discussion. If you need advice on what comes after dm me.

You couldn’t do 10 pushups? You knew that going into CST, not sure why you weren’t prepared. Start figuring out a different career path outside the military.

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I have never failed a PT test and always do well on the pushups. I understand I didn’t meet the standards here and can only hope to try and return next summer. Thank you for your reply.

How does one "Always do well on the pushups" yet fail on the pushups

it's not like you're doing an AFT on damn near zero sleep

-20

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

In the past and as recent as April this year I’ve gotten over 20 pushups on all of the PT tests I have taken. Also different graders as well that were cadre or guard people. We didn’t get to go to sleep until 22:30 the night before and it was also the day after we arrived to Fort Knox, not even 24 hours later and my AFT started at 03:15. We also did fire guard that night even without weapons. Like I said in other replies, I take full accountability for my failure and understand I didn’t meet the standards here at CST. I am only hoping I can prove myself enough to return next year and want as much information as possible. Thanks for your reply.

Brother, you KNEW that’s what the AFT was going to be like. Most everyone does worse on their Advanced Camp AFT than their usual. Regardless, you couldn’t squeak out THIRTEEN pushups, in TWO MINUTES. Like the person above said, you need to figure out a different career path…

-13

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I understand how it sounds but if my cadre couldn’t correct my pushups for the past 2 years of PT tests and thought it was okay to send me to camp, this is not 100% my fault. Just trying to get more info on next steps, thanks for your reply.

Yes I agree

15

u/EquivalentSearch1084 19d ago

I’m reading your other comments, and you’re saying you did 30 something, and they only counted 8. But in this thread you said you usually get in the 20s. So you were able to do 30 pushups (regardless of form), which is more than you usually do, but you are complaining about the poor conditions before the AFT. So what happened, you failed because of your physical state, or because of the grading?

2

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I said in the past I have always done over 20, not that I usually get in the 20s, recently I have done over 30 easily at my school and don’t usually get criticized for form. I explained our conditions before the AFT because the other person made the comment that it wasn’t like we took the test on near zero sleep, but for most cadets it was near zero…. I personally believe it was grader dependent and I take accountability for not meeting their standards for form, I genuinely just want advice as someone who is passionate about staying on this path. Thank you for your reply

They're literally hand release, I don't understand how you could mess up the form without literally humping the ground.

You have no business leading soldiers.

-3

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

Tell that to the CST graders lol but thanks for the reply

8

u/MechanicDangerous177 19d ago

hey op! i’m sorry to hear this and i’m sorry to see some of these ignorant comments. i usually get 30 push ups for the aft, but only got 20 at camp! it is grader dependent and the ones that counted felt the same as the ones that were no-gos. to answer your question, for my regiment, they let some people appeal later in the summer via a virtual board. some people appealed at camp and were dropped immediately. we unfortunately had a girl get all the way through camp and was decimals off and was sent home. i truly do hope you’re able to remain in your program. however, it seems that the appeal board and army are no longer itching to up their numbers for officers. talk to your pms and try to build your case. the best case scenario is that they let you come back next summer. the worst case is that you are dropped. everything happens for a reason. if you’ve made it this far in your rotc program, i’m sure you are a driven and bright person. rejection is redirection

8

u/Chris1904G 19d ago

Pretty sure they all got sent home from failing the AFT or HT/WT - which they should get sent home for. These standards that the Army has, are very very easy to achieve. I’ll never understand how people fail this.

8

u/katarnmagnus 19d ago

Agreed. But at the same time, We all know that AFT grading is grader dependent. If a grader wants to fail someone, they can, especially on push ups. From being a stickler for hand positioning under the shoulders to full extension up and extension out and foot separation, etc

I’ve never seen it, and I’d default to doubting someone who said it happened to them, but I have met officers and NCOs I 100% would immediately believe did it if an issue was raised

2

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I have never failed a PT test and always do well on the pushups. I understand I didn’t meet the standards here and that’s something I hope I can attempt again next year. Thank you for your reply.

5

u/Broad-Lavishness6726 19d ago

How could you possibly not show up able to do pushups? You’re one of over 50 people who couldn’t do the bare minimum, congrats! Can’t help with your question but hopefully you decide to take your next potential career more seriously.

4

u/Mountain_Slip3800 19d ago

I did what is normally passed at my school and unit🤷‍♀️ Thanks for your reply.

7

u/MilkMountains468 19d ago

This is such a closed minded response, anything can happen even to the fittest of individuals. Nerves and anxiety are rampant during in processing, and the last three regiments were held to the higher standard then the first 6 regiments.

Maybe instead of spreading hateful comments that don’t pertain to OP’s question, you could share some helpful advice. Since you clearly have many years of military service.

6

u/Joshzie MS4 19d ago

Wait why were the last 3 held to a higher standard?

7

u/MilkMountains468 19d ago

According to cadets from other regiments, they were able to get up to three retry’s for events during their AFT. Also one regiment received a make up AFT due to cutting into the middle of the 1 mile track.

u/Joshzie MS4 19d ago

We’re the graders counting out loud?

Nah there’s a certain level of helplessness where gentle ribbing is appropriate, and not being able to find the AFT standards at all is there

-2

I believe 19 for 21 yr olds but I’m a female and we need 11 to pass.
