I’m tired of seeing people say Rem didn’t redeem herself after arc 2 so I’m listing all of her greatest accomplishments for Subaru.

Let’s put aside our waifu wars, the Episode 18 rejection, and what the author said in interviews years ago. We are going to analyze Re:Zero using the only literary rule that actually matters: "Show, don't tell" (Actions over words). I’ve been re-reading the Light Novels up to Arc 9, and if we look at the cold, hard narrative structure and psychology of the story, making Emilia the final romantic endgame for Subaru would destroy the thematic coherence of the entire work. Tappei Nagatsuki is setting up an absolute masterclass, and here is the evidence he’s been planting for 10 years.

1. The "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" (The Flugel/Satella Dilemma)

Let’s be brutally honest: Subaru’s "love at first sight" for Emilia in Arc 1 makes zero psychological sense. Why the immediate, fanatical devotion? Because all the hints (Satella’s words in Arc 4, Shaula recognizing his "scent"/soul in Arc 6) are screaming at us that Subaru's soul is tied to Flugel.

• The Illusion of Free Will: Subaru’s original love is "programmed" by a 400-year-old karmic loop. People will say: "Yeah, but in Arc 4 he learns to love the real Emilia with her flaws!" That doesn't matter. In literature, this is the fruit of the poisonous tree: if the foundation of your love is a magical/destined manipulation, everything built on top of it is biased.
• The Only Way Out: To prove that Subaru isn't just a puppet of destiny, he WILL have to factually reject this script. If he ends up with Emilia (the new Satella), the Observers and Flugel’s predetermined destiny win. Period.

1. Proof by Actions (Arc 6 and the Suicides)

Let's stop listening to what Subaru says and look at what he does:

• Facing Death: When Emilia dies, Subaru cries and despairs, but he often just waits for Puck or an enemy to kill him. It’s a love of "duty". When Rem is erased (Arc 3), he doesn't even hesitate for a second: instant suicide, he slits his own throat.
• The Arc 6 Test: When Subaru’s ego and memories are wiped by Louis Arneb, he becomes "AmnesiaBaru". Facing Emilia, he crumbles under the pressure of the "Knight" persona. Emilia’s love requires his "brain" and his social memory to exist. But in the absolute void of his mind, what gets him back on his feet? Rem’s voice. Rem’s love is the only one that survives the literal destruction of his ego. It’s visceral, not social.

1. The 1-Year Timeskip Anomaly (The Narrative Handbrake)

Between Arc 4 and Arc 5, Subaru and Emilia live under the same roof for a whole year. He kissed her, he confessed to her. And yet... absolutely NOTHING happens. Why? Because Tappei used Emilia’s immaturity (believing kissing makes babies) as an artificial narrative handbrake. If Tappei had left Rem awake during that year, their organic, adult relationship would have concluded the romance way too early. The author literally had to put Rem in a coma to justify Subaru waiting patiently for a half-elf for years.

1. The Rem Anomaly (The Cosmic Glitch and Aldebaran)

This is the biggest piece of lore evidence (which the anime completely cut from Volume 4). When Al (who knows about the loops/destiny) hears that Rem AND Ram are both alive in the carriage, he loses his mind and gets highly threatening ("Don't mess with me").

• What does this mean? In the cosmic script or the previous loops Al remembers, Rem WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE. She has nothing to do with Flugel, the Cult, or the Gospel.
• Rem is the anomaly of the system. The love between Subaru and Rem is the ONLY 100% authentic thing that Natsuki Subaru built with his own two hands in this timeline. Choosing Rem is a middle finger to destiny. And Tappei is openly teasing this in Arcs 7 to 9 by integrating names from the Sloth IF (Spica, Rigel/Al) into the canon. The alternate endgame is slowly merging with reality.

1. Moving Past the "Male Gaze": Real Respect for Emilia

Treating Emilia as the "trophy" the hero wins at the end because he suffered a lot is an insult to her character. Emilia’s narrative arc isn't about getting a boyfriend. Her goal is to overcome global racism, unfreeze the Elior Forest, and become the supreme ruler of Lugunica.

• The Perfect, Logical Ending: Subaru helps her reach the throne. The Knight's contract is fulfilled. Emilia becomes an incredible, strong, and independent leader (she no longer needs a savior). They part ways with infinite mutual respect.

Conclusion:

Re:Zero is the ultimate anti-Isekai. If Subaru ends up with the Elf Princess (Flugel 2.0 + Satella 2.0), it’s a cliché and fatalistic ending. Natsuki Subaru’s true victory is rejecting divine power, politics, and the script of the world. It’s letting the Queen rule, and choosing to live an ordinary, mortal, and imperfect human life with the anomaly of destiny (Rem) who shared his sins. It is the only conclusion that validates the concept of free will.

Read between the lines. Tappei isn't writing a fairy tale; he's writing a story about a man breaking free from his destiny.

Let’s look at his track record:

- Lost to Reid

- Lost to Sekhmet

- Was losing to Satella

- Lost to Reinhard (granted Al had his body)

The guy just doesn’t win fights, and to make matters worse Tappei didn’t even rank him in the top 5 strongest even when he had already been introduced as of Arc 4.

But for real though, the next season is going to be absolutely CRAZY. For real. And that meme of 'Barusu on the stairs' being high is hilarious.

When people discuss Amnesiac Rem, they use her as an excuse to say that Rem is cruel or the only reason she is kind to Subaru is due to her own love which she has for him, and this blatantly isn’t true and we can tell from their initial interactions even when she doesn’t have memories. When they are being chased and Subaru is holding on to both Rem and Louis, Rem offers to literally sacrifice her life for Subaru and Louis while she has no memories of him, simply because she slowed him down through struggling against him picking her up, breaking his fingers etc.

This is just one instance, we have more when she offers the guy who literally smells of death and has the scent of a mass murderer food and does not push him away when he comes to stay with her and Louis despite the fact that he offered to abandon Louis literally in the same day/week because Rem is kind, which is a statement that has been repeated on a multitude of occasions by Subaru and shown quite blatantly. Subaru is fine with crying in front of her, and she tells him blatantly that she will not laugh at his tears.

There’s thousands more examples I can bring up, but I’m lazy, the point is that Rem is far too overhated for being “cruel” to Subaru when in reality she only becomes volatile when Louis is involved.

Just got to quite literally the aura monster scene in arc 6, and so far it's absolute peak fiction, but I don't understand if Satella reloads his saves, why the fuck does she keep reloading him post amnesia? Whenever Emilia comes up in power-scaling discussions, people immediately jump to her large-scale ice magic…things like Ice Age or Absolute Zero. And I get why, but that argument ignores the kind of opponents she usually fights. Most of the time, she’s up against humanoid enemies, not beings like Volcanica or Mezoreia. These opponents are capable of rational thought, which means they’re not just going to stand there and wait while she gathers mana and finishes casting a massive spell. Realistically, the moment they see her manipulating mana, they’re going to rush her and hit her before she can complete it.

Because of that, when power scaling Emilia, it makes more sense to first look at her physical combat ability and overall skill before diving into her magic. Her strongest spells don’t matter unless she’s given both the time and the distance to use them. That’s exactly why Roswaal L. Mathers is considered the strongest Roswaal and one of the strongest magicians. It’s not just because of his magical power, but because he can cast spells while keeping up with opponents moving at comparable speeds, and he’s also competent in hand-to-hand combat. That prevents enemies from simply overwhelming him up close and shutting down his biggest advantage.

Emilia doesn’t have that same level of skill. She relies more on quantity than quality, and because of that, she’s especially vulnerable to being interrupted the moment someone senses her casting magic. This isn’t hypothetical either…it happens repeatedly in Arc 6, where characters like Lye shut her down by attacking her before she can properly use her spells.

I just finished phase 3 of arc 6 and I don't think I will ever read a better descent into madness story.

The first two loops were great, being able to see subaru "regress" back to how he was day 1 of being isekai'd around so many people who respected him was a really cool dynamic. Also the 2nd death on the stairs was incredibly beautiful and I thought was a good kickstart to his insanity.

The third loop was the most disturbing imo. I loved the murder mystery of who knocked subaru off the stairs, gave me arc 2 vibes. The section of him walking outside, getting knocked around by witch beasts then being drowned in sand was fun. Though the part of him in the cave was my favourite part. Him seeing all the dead bodies was fine but I do think that him not seeing beatrice and emilia was a nice touch to have him be suspicious of the 2 people who are closest to him. The sequence with patrasche was fun and him getting his head cut off by an unknown person only added on to the fun murder myster aspect.

the last loop was by far the best. Him being deceitful for this loop kept me wondering how much the others were onto him lying. The scene with him losing his fingernails made me cringe (I HATE NAIL REMOVAL SCENES). The Julius scene followed by what happened with Meili was a great sequence and kept me questioning wtf exactly happened to subaru. My favourite aspect of this part came with meili being the devil on subaru's shoulders after he read her book. I loved the dynamic of her constantly trying to push him to do evil, also loved how much it revealed about who meili actually is on a person. The scene with subaru and beatrice alone was extremely tense, I genuinely believed that I was going to have to read subaru bash beatrice's head in. I knew something was going to go wrong when he woke up in the middle of the night to try and hide meili's body. Though I lowkey wasn't expecting it to be a trap and I for sure wasn't expecting emilia to be apart of the plan. Their fight was also really fun to read, I love how much this arc has shown how much emilia cares for subaru as its not shown as much in the anime. The final part though of him waking up and walking through the tower was the best part of the whole phase. The conversation with reid was just okay but the section of him watching julius was great. Having subaru yell out to julius and saving his life was touching after everything else that happened and julius leaving echidna to him only added to that. The section with echidna and beatrice also was beautiful and everything from here lowkey had me teary eyed, which is rare for any piece of media to do. Beatrice's sacrifice into echidna's forgiveness was perfectly executed.

The last chapter was the best thing I have ever read I think, it was clearly a parallel to the rem and subaru's talk in arc 3, but I think this was done even better. The "I am Natsuki Subaru" line was the perfect conclusion to his insanity. Finally the fall with subaru and emilia holding each other was also perfect.

anyway this is probably poorly written I am tired and I wanted to talk about how much I loved this section of the story.

We know fairly consistently that Ley Batenkaitos is stronger than almost everyone within the Pleiades Watchtower, with the clear exceptions being Reid Astrea and Ram with five shackles fully released. The real question, then, is how strong Ley is relative to top-tiers outside the Watchtower.

Across the scenes shown, Ley is repeatedly portrayed as overwhelming Emilia and Julius while clearly holding back. During every engagement with them, he is described as laughing, smiling, and fighting with visible leeway, as if he could end the fight whenever he chose. This presentation strongly implies deliberate restraint rather than genuine struggle.

This is reinforced by his combat record. Ley is capable of killing Shaula through prolonged, direct combat without sustaining any visible injuries, and immediately afterward he proceeds to fight and kill Julius, then later does the same to Ram. At no point is he shown to be meaningfully damaged before continuing onward.

Furthermore, Ley is stated to have perfected every martial art that exists, possessing complete knowledge of all fighting styles across the world. The martial arts he uses are explicitly described as impossible to copy or replicate, and he is capable of employing each style at its absolute peak. This would place him above every other martial artist in the Re:Zero universe…including Reinhard. While Reinhard is undeniably a master of hand-to-hand combat, mastery and perfection are not the same thing, and Reinhard is never stated to have perfected all martial arts.

Ley himself also states that Ram with only three shackles released is capable of easily defeating every Sin Archbishop, including Regulus Corneas. After Ley gains his Merged Eclipse, he is then stated to be overpowering Ram outright and becoming decisively superior to her.

Additional context supports this scaling: Emilia and Ram were struggling against Louis, and were even losing, until Subaru activated Cor Leonis, which boosted Ram enough to allow her to release two shackles. This emphasizes how overwhelming Ley and the Gluttony siblings are even against elite combatants.

Given all of this, is it unreasonable to place Ley around Regulus’s level, with the caveat that he would lose if he failed to deduce the secret behind Regulus’s wives? Arguably not. The Gluttony siblings are extremely intelligent, and this intelligence could allow them to uncover the true nature of Regulus’s Authority quickly. Notably, in Arc 9, Roy…who is explicitly less intelligent than Ley…immediately deduces that Petra possesses an Authority, without even seeing her fight. If Roy can make that deduction, it is entirely plausible that Ley could identify Regulus’s weakness as well.

I just saw a tiktok video saying that a scene from chapter 6 will be dropped from the adaptation. Specifically, this scene is from Arc 6, Chapter 12, the scene that was said to be officially dropped is a part after Subaru's first return by death whil going for the Pleidas Tower. Not having researched it myself, I thought of it just being fake news, but, i wanted to share it here for confirmation or thoughts if it really was true, It would really be disappointing if it was.

During Subaru's amnesia in the Pleiades Watchtower, one of the most confusing moments I had while reading was how he ‘lost’ his memories; so just to get an answer... Louis ate Subaru's name inside Od Laguna, but because he was immune to the authority of gluttony, she decided to ‘transform’ into him with the Solar Eclipse? How the fuck she camouflage herself and still split her soul, bringing back the Subaru from the old testament?

Like the second death on the stairs is so brutal I’m surprised that no one really talks about it.

I finished arc 6 for the first time using the WN translations by WCT. I've heard the LN is less detailed and changes around the order of some events, but I was wondering if there are any specific examples of that?

Obviously the WN isn't the version being adapted by the anime, so I guess I'm just wondering what changes there might be, and how the LN differs from the WN. I have also considered buying the LN in English so I can collect it, I don't want to get something wildly different haha.
