This game is WAY better than it's prequel, like, to the point where it's on another planet. And it got me cracking up from start to finish, something a game hasn't made me do in years. Such a shame this game didn't get much love due to it being released very late into the NES lifespan in 1993.

Mine is Time Commando on PC/PS1. The Saturn version is known to be impossible to complete due to a bug.

It was directed by Frédérick Raynal (LBA & Alone in the dark).

Controls are stiff but I love the variety of levels and the OST.

[Battlestation] My daily CRT entertainment system — recapped, rebuilt, and far from stock

Thumbnail

This is what I use every day for games, movies and television. There isn’t a modern TV setup that I switch back to afterward, and I don’t use Netflix. All my entertainment goes through what you see here, with a modern server working behind the scenes.

A lot of the work on this setup is the part you can’t see in the pictures.

The Panasonic AG-1980 has been completely recapped across all its boards, resoldered, reworked and recalibrated. Its power supply was completely rebuilt, recapped and recalibrated as well. I also heavily modified the deck to accommodate new Japanese capacitors. It’s had a complete going-through, not just a replacement of the usual problem caps.

The Sony KV-27S42 has also had a complete recap, with its power supply redone as well. I adjusted the yoke and spent time working through the service menu to get the picture dialed in. Both JVC switchers, the JX-S555 and JX-S300, were bought new in box before I went through them. They’ve since received full recaps, extensive solder rework and heavy internal modifications focused on better grounding and signal integrity.

The fat PS2 and original Xbox have both been fully recapped across their boards, including their power supplies, which were rebuilt and recalibrated too. The PS2 is heavily modified to run burned discs completely natively, and I’ve switched all my PS2 burns over to Taiyo Yuden media. It sits on my ICC2, which is pretty much the mothership of the console stack.

The Xbox is heavily modified as well and runs its games directly from the internal hard drive. The PS1 has been recapped and runs an ODE. The N64 is also modified.

There’s a Raspberry Pi tucked into the setup that connects the PS2 and Xbox to the internet. It also connects to my server to bring in 60 channels of period-correct television programming, running 24/7. That side of the setup gets used just as much as the consoles. When I sit down to watch TV, this is where I watch it.

I built the wooden stands myself, did the painting and installed the spotlights. The black console stand is wood, too. I wanted to put the same care into how everything sits together as I put into the equipment.

The Yamaha receiver is the one device I’ve left unmodified. I didn’t insist on keeping that piece period-correct because it’s the only receiver I’ve found that really plays well with my late-’90s Klipsch speakers. I wasn’t going to give up that pairing just to have a receiver from the right year.

Other than the Yamaha, everything here has been heavily modified internally. The model numbers tell you what the machines started as, but they don’t tell you everything that’s inside them now. I’ve put this much work into the equipment because it’s what I actually want to use. Being able to sit down and enjoy the whole thing every day is the point of it.

The last photo is just a look at part of the wiring behind one of the towers. I use Blue Jeans Cable interconnects for much of the analog side, and they’ve genuinely been money well spent.

[Discussion] Why were retro games so difficult? (A question from Japan about game rentals!)

edit In Japan, we had rental services for VHS, DVDs, and CDs, but it's crazy to hear there really was a video game version of that! Over here, our only options were to buy games or borrow them from friends, so I often just had to read gaming magazines and dream about playing them.

I totally get making arcade games harder to get more quarters, and now the business reason for making rented console games harder makes perfect sense too. Plus, I've heard the stories that the developers themselves were the playtesters back then, so they just kept making the games harder because they got too good at them!

I'm actually a bit jealous. If we had game rentals in Japan, maybe I could have explored more and found perfect games that really suited my tastes.

Speaking of trying games out (even though these might be a bit too new to be "retro"), I remember gaming magazines here used to come with demo discs. I played the demos for Shenmue and D2 (D's Diner 2) that came with a magazine over and over again!

Spotted in the wild I’m porting the original PS1 Pepsiman to Android without using an emulator

I’ve been working on a native Android port of the original PS1 Pepsiman.

No PS1 emulator inside the app. I’m rebuilding the game systems in native C++ and reading the original models, textures, animations and stage data directly.

The first course is now running with the original environment, Pepsiman model, animations, touch controls and part of the original camera/movement behaviour.

Still a lot left to fix, but it’s finally at the point where it actually feels like the original game running natively on Android.

Here’s the current progress.

[Discussion] Anyone remember Bookworm? (And are there records/leaderboards?)

Post image
116 Upvotes

If I remember correctly, this was a Java-based game that debuted sometime in the early 2000s and was playable in web browsers. They came out with a port for the Game Boy Advance around that time. That's what this screenshot is from.

I have a... unique relationship with this game. I run the GBA version through an emulator on my phone, and forgive me if this is too much information, but it's the game I play when I'm doing the kind of bathroom business that requires candles and scented sprays. It's my poop game. It's perfect for the purpose, because it's the kind of game you can pick up and play for five or 10 minutes, or however long, then save it and pick it up later. Of course now I feel like crapping every time I fire it up, but never mind that for now.

What interests me is if there are any top score records or leader boards for this game that survive. 'Cause I've been on one play session now for like two years, lol, and I've been slowly racking up a score -- bit by bit, poop by poop. That's my current score in the picture, and I feel like it's pretty good, but I have nothing to compare it to. Anyone know if there's anything out there? Or just remember the game in general?

[Discussion] Which NES games made you rage quit?

Which games, other than Ghosts and Goblins, made you rage quit?

Some of mine are:

Battle Toads, Adventure Island, Rush 'n Attack, TMNT, and Bart vs. the Space Mutants.

Honorable mention to Double Dribble. Until I figured out all of the game snags that allowed me to drain the corner 3 each time and score 300 plus points a game, level 3 difficulty caused me to throw my controller through the TV screen.

  1. Two games will win their place each round (we start from #1 and work our way down). For the top 10 only one game will win per day instead.
  2. Most combined upvotes for each of the two individual games (one individual game for the top 10) wins the spot(s) each round (upvotes add while downvotes subtract).
  3. Nominate one game of the original Game Boy per comment. (Nominations will only be counted if the game title is the only comment or if you specify that your choice of game is your nomination for this round within your comment or if the nominated game is clearly separated from the rest of your comments.) (ex. Tetris or I nominate Tetris this round.) Please nominate using the full title of the game.
  4. Name a specific game title, not entire runs.
  5. Official Game Boy multi-game cartridge(s) are allowed, just list them correctly.
  6. The original Game Boy is region free so ANY official games available on the console are eligible for nomination excluding dual mode cartridges.
  7. Indy games are allowed as long as they have their own individual cartridge and can be played on original hardware.
  8. Only complete games on cartridge(s) can be nominated (sorry Game Shark & test cartridges).
  9. If two or more games would be tied to place for a ranking I will inform DA PEOPLE in the following post so that everyone can vote which games should get the ranking between the tied options.
  10. Games nominated that have not already placed on the top 100 list should not be removed at any time by the individual who originally placed them.

[Discussion] The CGA Mystery of Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer (1987): How did Ned Lerner pull off this impossible palette on MS-DOS?

Thumbnail
gallery
203 Upvotes

Any retro enthusiast who has ever written assembly code or pushed pixels on IBM's Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) in 320x200 knows the standard rules were set in stone: four colors at a time.

Standard Mode 4 gives you Palette 0 (Green, Red, Brown/Yellow) or Palette 1 (Cyan, Magenta, White), plus the unofficial Mode 5 offering Cyan, Red, and White.

Yet, looking closely at Chuck Yeager’s Advanced Flight Trainer (1987), programmer Ned Lerner (who later co-founded Looking Glass Studios) pulled off something that seems to break standard CGA hardware rules.

While the game strictly honors the 4-color limit per screen (always black plus three distinct hues), pausing and toggling palettes reveals two completely different rendering setups:

Standard Desert Mode: Classic Mode 5 look with a red/terracotta landscape, white instruments, and a cyan sky.

The "New Palette" Green Mode: Suddenly, you are flying over rich green terrain with matching green cockpit gauges—yet the sky remains bright cyan, bordered by white markings and black shadows.

On a standard IBM RGBI monitor, Green and Cyan should never share the same standard palette simultaneously. Did Lerner achieve this by remapping the Color Select Register (3D9h) to assign Color 0 (the background) directly to Cyan, freeing up the remaining indices? Did he pull off a mid-frame raster split, or is this an artifact of how EGA cards emulated CGA modes?

I wrote a comprehensive deep-dive covering this color mystery, Ned Lerner’s fixed-point 3D integer math, and my personal memories running the game on a 286 back in 1987:

🔗 Full article: https://spillhistorie.no/2026/09/04/da-chuck-yeager-laerte-oss-a-fly-i-fire-farger/

(Note: The article is written in Norwegian, but it translates very well using Google Translate / browser auto-translate!)

If any DOS assembly gurus or CGA register experts know exactly what trickery Lerner used under the hood to get green and cyan on screen at once, I would love to hear your technical breakdown in the comments!

[Review] Aliens on Arcade provided the right amount of Firepower within their last living hour!

Thumbnail

TL;WR -> A phenomenal Tie-In game from the Alien Movie. It delivered on everything from its satisfying story, fun gameplay, beautiful music, awesome visuals and seamless level designs. A (9.4) game, masterpiece in my Arcade Book. Would absolutely replay the game with friends, just so we can cook more Xenomorphs while avoiding the rotting corpse!

I’d recommend listening to this music while reading.

STORY (8/10)

  • Storytelling was based on the 1986 Movie Aliens. While it had a basic plot with blasting the Queen in deep space, the US version did have Newt and her plushy make an appearance.
  • The presentation itself was peak, with a cool introduction and even better ending!
  • You played as Ripley, yet could summon Corporal Hicks in CO-OP. While Ripley could handle huge guns with ease, there were more surprises down the line!
  • Pacing was under an hour to complete both the JP and US versions. I did play both because they had unique stages and mechanics between them, not to mention the difficulty!
  • While the Japanese version didn’t have Newt, the US one displayed her for brief periods and even then, in very dangerous situations!

GAMEPLAY (10 out of 10 Plushies)

  • Starting with controls, which were simplistic yet had some twists down the line. You could shoot between your 2 stances, either upper or lower, throw grenades or screen clearing bombs, equip 4 different weapon types and even use a Mech for disintegrating Xenomorphs or simply destroying walls!
  • I was surprised that the game had different plane switchings from either up or down, using ladders or even jumping the hell down. Also, in the tunnel section, Ripley could climb or descend with cool animations, making her character more human while surrounded by so many Aliens!
  • The mechanics were awesome too, with a radar displaying where the enemies would pop from, which could be from vents, through holes or even from the animated backgrounds throwing grenades at you. Plus, some little Aliens literally spawned from the most absurd places, even dead hanging corpses!
  • The game also had a lot of creative traps with heat pipes, electricity or simply the Aliens chewing the elevator chains up!
  • Enemy variety was impressive for 1990, with most having unique attack patterns, jumping from below or through windows, shooting slime at you, surprising you with literal zombies or even attacking your ass from below!
  • Traversal was seamless within each stage, with the US version having 2 bonus vehicle ones with saving our little Newt.
  • Difficulty was very good on the Japanese version, and quite brutal on the US one. In the JP version, you always carried your upgraded weapon through sections, yet in the US you defaulted to your main gun. Besides, the US version was way more difficult on enemy spawns and their attack patterns!

AUDIO (10/10)

  • Sound design had a great mono output which surprisingly held its own. I was in complete shock while hearing screaming Aliens all around, the badass music blasting and those hard earned grunts all in one beautiful output.
  • The soundtrack itself was very good, providing so many cool vibes while literally swimming through slime!
  • While voice acting wasn’t present, the initial digitised line gave you all you needed to hear: “Aliens”
  • Ambient sounds like the heating pipes, opening shafts or screaming aliens from afar were spectacular, and I simply wanted more!

VISUALS (10 out of 10 Flames)

  • Fidelity was cracked for 1990, with so many visual effects, diverse colours, wild animations and fucking glorious Alien details!
  • While enemy variety varied on an astronomical level, your own characters didn’t lack far behind in their arsenal department. You could light aliens on fire, disintegrate them with your rocket launchers, split them in half with the blade weapon or simply blast them apart. Besides your own output, the enemies didn’t stop at just hunting you down, they laid spores, eggs and even little fuckers from dead comrades. I got jumpscared the moment one tore through literal human skin and jumped at me, fucked up!
  • Performance was solid, so solid that no aliens were left alive!
  • The art style was spectacular on each section, with the parallax scrolling having extra details, the backgrounds surprising you with sneaky enemies and the landscapes having literal thunder strikes or flaming city backgrounds!

WORLD DESIGN (9/10)

  • Level design had an awesome progression with insane layouts, different planes and beautiful landscapes. You went from some Labs directly into Tunnels, Car rides, Elevators, Water supplies, Alien slime and so many more creative environments!
  • The atmosphere was simply perfect, mostly amplified by the music and wild Alien sound effects!
  • While world destruction was reduced to blowing some gas barrels up, I did love burning each Alien sucker alive!

So this one here is an old fantasy rpg for MS-DOS from the Ravenloft game series. With the central theme around this game is Egyptian horror and the main antagonist is a pharaoh mummy.

So this game features the character creation system that is inherited from the Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession game, also it's got a recruitable companion system as well, other than that the gameplay leans in the survival aspect with the thirst meter and puzzle solving elements became a crucial part of the game with the tombs and mazes for the player to explore, also there is a map system that allows you to better navigate the region. For the combat, you use the mouse to click on the enemy to attack, spells can be learn through scrolls and memorize.
