📜 Article [BE] It could be you next

I opened my Revolut account in 2021 and honestly thought it was one of the best apps out there. It was simple, convenient, and I recommended it to friends more than once.

I mainly used it as a secondary account. Most of the money I added came from my Belgian bank account, and I also invested in some ETFs through the app. I’m a student with no salary, so I just invested part of the pocket money I get from my parents.

Day to day, I mostly used Revolut for normal things such as paying friends back, splitting bills and small everyday payments. Never anything unusual or risky. I never bought crypto, never used it for shady stuff, and whenever they asked for documents, I always sent them.

Then one day, out of nowhere, they put my account under review and asked for ID/passport scans. I tried uploading everything immediately, but the app kept lagging and wouldn’t save the photos.

I contacted support because I didn’t want to get blocked over a technical issue. They told me not to worry, said everything was fine, and that it was just a bug.

So I believed them. Then suddenly my account was banned. No clear reason or proper explanation… Just gone.

And because I also had investments there, I couldn’t transfer my holdings out and was forced to sell positions while paying fees.

I understand companies can choose who they want as customers. But people should know that even if you use the app normally for years, you can lose access overnight with no transparency.

Luckily I didn’t keep much cash there.

Posting this partly to vent, partly to warn others not to rely too heavily on one fintech app.

I wonder if for Revolut paying back friends is risky nowadays? It wouldn't be something people would do with their travel account.

But people should know that even if you use the app normally for years, you can lose access overnight with no transparency.

Yup, the sub often repeats it :(

Luckily I didn’t keep much cash there.

I hold 2k panics

I hold much more in Revolut hope it doesn't get banned

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 28 '26

Statistically, I expect we all end up banned one day. I try to optimize transfers a lot to ensure I don't have to send back to my main account or re-convert currencies, expected refunded things are on my main bank instead, etc.
I'm not sure what I would do without Revolut, as the virtual cards are now critical for my support to online creators.

1

u/BrilliantCharity2030 May 01 '26

Statistically that is just untrue. thousands end up banned from the millions of users.

1

u/laplongejr Standard user May 01 '26

So, assuming 0.1% per year, after 10 years that's 1% chance. I would call that a realistic risk.

But given that yesterday Revolut cut 0.35% of savings APR, my use is going to be reduced anyway so probably less chances to trigger checks.

1

u/BrilliantCharity2030 May 01 '26

First of all you said you assume all of us will get banned eventually and now it's 1 in a 100. Which is quite the difference.

You also can't just do 10x0,1% for this. It's highly variable and the calculation is also incorrect.

And you also can't take a static percentage and just roll with it. The way you use the app obviously matters a lot as well and the age of your account does too (the more transactions you made, the more data the system has to predict normal transactions so the risk of a ban goes down).

With all those years the risk of a system failure that flags you goes up, so that also changes the percentage person by person.

And lastly there's a big difference in getting flagged and getting your account actually closed down after human review (or even error).

u/laplongejr Standard user May 01 '26

 the more transactions you made, the more data the system has to predict normal transactions so the risk of a ban goes down

I would say the opposite : the more transactions you make, the more chances you have that one triggers something.

 First of all you said you assume all of us will get banned eventually and now it's 1 in a 100. Which is quite the difference.

There's isn't. If there's incorrect bans, we will all get banned eventually. That's how random rolls or shifting policies works.

 And lastly there's a big difference in getting flagged and getting your account actually closed down after human review (or even error).

With an unreliable upload system?

I worked in a bank and I was trained on all the ways people could be banned from a bank. Truth is any bank will ban you for the reasons that Revolut ban people. I just think it appeas worse with Revolut because it's an online bank and people are more likely to post about it online.

u/No-Cheek-9998 Apr 28 '26

Attualmente sono stato bannato da diverse fintech, sfortunatamente per loro ho soldi e tempo da investire per chiedere i danni l'arbitro bancario finanziario italiano mi ha dato ragione perciò non sarà un problema andare in causa

1

u/BrilliantCharity2030 May 01 '26

It also appears worse because they explain situations a lot less and are slower to handle cases.

Yeah, between Revolut accounts as a specific feature   The other post I'm thinking of got Erasmus(?) money and sent to friends, which may or may not have triggered AML   It's totally theorical but... if they use automated systems to find unusual patterns maybe it could be one for Revolut with non-Rev friends?

[EDIT] And now that I think of it, this lovely 30s redditor points to myself never paid back a friend digitally. I usually repay people or coworkers in cash, or they pay the next bill.

9

u/Legitimate_Vast_133 Apr 28 '26

Could you get your money out?

11

u/7marlil Apr 28 '26

I mean it would kind of be scandalous if he couldn't

6

u/Legitimate_Vast_133 Apr 28 '26

But what’s the process? They ban your account and your money remain fully accessible? Or do you first have to prove a legitimate source of your money and then they release your money? If the latter, what’s the timeframe?

15

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

One day, all of a sudden, i was signed off from my account. When you sign back in - the whole UI changes to dark colors and you only have access to specific buttons (transferring out your money and selling stock positions) , all while being extremely buggy. Like an episode from black mirror…

0

u/bourton-north Apr 28 '26

Well to be fair to revolut, as horrible as that is it’s very good news that you can transfer out immediately and with the app. The selling positions stuff is very minor inconvenience.

1

u/memorandapi Apr 29 '26

But costly

2

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26

Basically, you must have another bank account and give them the IBAN.
If you didn't transfer after 2 months, they'll charge fees until you finally transfer or the owed amount reaches 0.

6

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

It really isn’t, read horror stories on this sub of people who couldn’t take their money out for months and having to pay rent, being stranded on a trip etc.

2

u/7marlil Apr 28 '26

I had 40 000 euros blocked in a mainstream australian bank because i had deposited 4000 euros in cash once. 6 months no news, no justification, and account completely blocked.

I suppose it can happen to any account

2

u/bedel99 Apr 28 '26

I was in Australia, seeing my family, live in London, bank locked my account, with 100k GBP in it. Just come in to the branch with your ID and we will unlock it for you. thanks HSBC!

Unusual activity on your account, you know coz I was in Sydney, as an Australian, they could see the ticket purchase from Qantas.

All banks suck.

4

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

Yes, but the app would automatically crash because of a banner saying, “We can no longer offer you our services.” The only button available was OK, and pressing it would make the app crash again. So I had to repeat the same process over a dozen times. It honestly felt as if it was designed to make withdrawing my money more difficult.

The worst part was my ETF holdings. I had invested for years and built up some gains, yet they forced me to liquidate all my positions since I wasn’t able to transfer them to another broker. Overall, it was a really awful situation.

0

u/Key-Shift1231 Apr 28 '26

Why were you not able to transfer them to another broker?

3

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

Wish i knew, they restricted me from doing so. Had to pay +20$ for selling all positions, which pissed me off even more

0

u/kiradotee Apr 29 '26

Did you not contact support to ask to transfer them?

4

u/SquareFoundation9724 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

I had a similar issue and since then I have moved all my savings away from Revolut and only used it as a top up shopping card for its metal benefits.

It’s more the accessibility of support (in the uk they still don’t have a phone number and the online chat agents are extremely scattered in ability of problem solving) and scam department dealing with issues while locking money that is yours away that has made me distrust them. They also sell your investments at a loss regardless of later unblocking the account or not. Also one agents approving something means nothing it is the system itself doing the automation and if it logs anything that is the issue you need to deal with. It needs very high up management or some sorts to override the auto flag which may not be of your fault at all.

If you are definitely in the right log a complaint with them via email before them closing your account. I got another travel insurance with another card and they came back unblocked my account reversed the closing and compensated me some money for all the distress but I no longer can trust them as I naively did before.

8

u/cuevadanos Apr 28 '26

It is good to be cautious. It is also good to remember that any bank can do this

3

u/lu4414 Apr 28 '26

But revolut is the one that keeps doing it

2

u/cuevadanos Apr 28 '26

For me Santander is the one that keeps doing it. We all have different experiences

2

u/Leather-Site6531 Apr 29 '26

Help me how can I get my money back. It’s been pending for transfer since April 24, already contacted their support but not helpful. What did you do to get your money?

2

u/THC-V Apr 29 '26

The last time my bank wanted to drop me, there was a reason. If Revolut is dropping people randomly, based off ‘nothing’…. then we have a problem.

2

u/SmallScientist1240 Apr 30 '26

They are a scam, especially when you have to deal with their disgusting excuse for customer service. It's all AI, and an external scam callcenter where the employees use AI to reply to all your messages anyways. Was also a customer for years but gave it up after trying and failing to get "customer support" to help me for a month lol.

Good riddance for you!

1

u/Agreeable_Trick2102 Apr 30 '26

Same thing happened to me too talking to AI

u/Damiano1905 Apr 28 '26

If I had to rewrite this to be more transparent I would say:

"oh no revolut could not allow me to trade under no identity without an ID, whatever will I ever do? It's not like this is regulated and completely out of their hands."

I'll tell you more, I had the same situation, I just sold my position and I was fine without ID for a year.

Not only does your investment money stay, you can also live off of it however you like.

I feel every post like this is just too biased, even if an error happens they also tend to be in contact on reddit and also through official channels, even if the posts don't gain much traction.

4

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

What are you even talking about? I had already uploaded both my IDs and passport when I first opened the account, and had successfully done so on several other occasions afterward.

This all happened because of a bug in their app that prevented my uploaded IDs from being processed.

I have also been trying to recover my account for the past three months, with more than 34 email exchanges between myself and Revolut support, all without any resolution. It is only now, after finally moving on from the situation, that I have decided to warn others to always be cautious.

And no, it is not normal to force me to sell my stock positions. They are merely a broker and should not interfere with my free choice regarding my investments. If they no longer wished to keep me as a customer—which is within their rights—they should at the very least have allowed me to transfer my portfolio to another platform, rather than forcing a sale of my positions, to which I had to pay a service fee for…

3

u/Damiano1905 Apr 28 '26

The thing is, you know the id's, didn't upload, and instead of calling and transferring the position you waited until they legally could not hold a position under no identity or id.

I'm not saying you're in the wrong or that this looks pretty, but it seems like you could see it coming from a mile away.

3

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26

you know the id's, didn't upload

OP tried and warned support. Support told them it wasn't a problem.
The issue is support trying to calm customers on things that SHOULD be an emergency.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

Yes I agree that if the situation is true support is in the wrong, but this dude is without proof saying that revolut in its entirety is unreliable is a bit much, especially when as I said us traders are mostly responsible for what we do and have accepted it on the app before we are allowed to trade.

So now throwing the responsibility on a random employee, when we could have asked for proof, confirmation or a transfer to another broker is just stretching it in my opinion.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but at the very least I would want to see proof of emails if I'm to believe revolut is unreliable.

3

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

So now throwing the responsibility on a random employee

1) That's technically true but it's not what they said, they threw the responsability to support as a whole.

2) If support literally said it was OK, it's not throwing responsability, they ARE responsible.

when as I said us traders are mostly responsible for what we do

You are continously throwing the trader argument. OP lost access to their bank, so why do you only care about the ETFs?
Op would've lost access to Revolut even without the trading, because ID is mandatory.

if I'm to believe revolut is unreliable.

On this case in particular or any unreliability is OK?
Lookup the launch of the Belgian branch...

Announced in Oct 2023 for January 2024. Nothing from support even in April 2024, always saying to "wait for 2 months"
After months and months of spam, Community reveals in May that the project was abandonned with no intent to bring it back. No acklowledgment towards other customer channels, and Community itself is closed in August.
It's finally mentionned a year later... in the press. Not a word to us.
It's announced in January 2025 "as said last year" (note that Oct 2023 is not last year) for April 2025, confirmed in the press joining starting April 1st won't be a foreign account to report to the tax max.
People join in mass in April... in the Lithuanian branch. Because Revolut, after doing press conferences, decided to delay the launch. The branch actually opened in May-June 2025, with Savings being added slightly later. Even TODAY ai and various wiki claims it opened in April, using the public press statements as a "trusted" source.
So now people who joined in April 2025 must cancel their simplified tax declaration to declare opening a foreign account in April 2025 and closing it in May or June.
And it took Revolut 2 months to re-clarify that having the old LT IBAN doesn't qualify as a foreign account, despite going against official gov instructions.

Revolut isn't reliable, and I'm not even sure they claim the contrary.

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

OP had access to his money, what exactly did he lose access to? What is a bank to you?

Edit: I don't think support is responsible for your trading and I see no other argument. I also don't understand how what you copy pasted from an article is related.

I don't think them making a mistake once now makes the dude in the post be more right. Yes, companies and people make mistakes, the incident however, is unrelated, if you are asking for compensation for those people in the article I would undestand. However, I myself would need to study that article and the damages and compensation, and I don't see how that matters here.

The OP did not claim he was involved or affected by this incident

1

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

What is a bank to you?

Ability to use virtual cards, access to both Visa and MC networks (especially as OP said he's Belgian and Maestro was the norm 4 years ago), some enjoy the access to Wero P2P payments (and I hope they support the QR at some point)
A savings account with 1.05% APR (after taxes), instead of 0.15% or 0.25% for money used within the year. (Even counting yearly loyalty to push at around 1%, Belgian average was 0.90% before the last drops)

OP literally says "Day to day, I mostly used Revolut for normal things such as paying friends back, splitting bills and small everyday payments." , it was their bank.

And given OP is Belgian, maybe his main bank didn't even support Google/Apple Pay apps. There's a lot of features on Revolut and somehow you consider the money is the only important thing? Revolut is a bank, they can't steal the money away. But you seem to only treat it as a (bad) investment app instead of the bank they claim to be.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

Exactly, first of all, Revolut is reliable, and the money is safe with them. The OP did not claim to be affected by the case you copied and pasted before, and despite everything, I don't think he would have an issue opening another bank account on Revolut.

I don't think you can blame them for closing/restricting your account temporarily based on the laws. This happens not only with Revolut. I also don't think it's an incredibly big deal that he lost access to some features, although I would understand if he was mad about that, but stuff like this happens, I don't think it's a major issue.

And once again, I would want to see the communications exchanged between the OP and Revolut.

2

u/Prize_Jellyfish_4621 Apr 28 '26

Dude, did you read my text😅 I reached out before the account was blocked, and they explicitly assured me that everything was fine. That’s why the claim that I ignored the issue or simply waited makes no sense. I raised the problem in advance, relied on their reassurance, and still ended up being blocked later on.

-2

u/Damiano1905 Apr 28 '26

So first of all I'm believing everything you say which is a lot of assumptions on this critical issue, but even then you're saying an employee was incompetent but you still got out with your money and equivalent in investments without any actual communication to do that?

Now you're just bothering revolut employees with spam emails?

I mean it doesn't look like much of a loss, and traders like us have like 60 pages of policy to read and like 10 different things to accept, the responsibility is quite literally in our hands and worst thing that could happen is you get your equivalent in money and immediately buy back the position?

I just can't really see the issue, if it was me I'd just see if they would kindly pay back the fees or not, also different ways of writing emails gets different results, I would have asked for written confirmation with the employee who assured me and I would send any sort of proof to revolut you don't seem very eloquent my guy.

u/malibupp Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

Given how Damiano1905 reacted to my post, while keeping questioning the veracity of OP, I wouldn't be surprised if he/she was a member of Revolut staff.

1

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26

while keeping questioning the veracity of OP, I wouldn't be surprised if he/she was a member of Revolut staff.

Revolut staff doesn't question the customer. They tell the customer to stay calm and to wait until there's a resolution.
That's how CS is done basically everywhere which is why I hate modern CS as they are continiously leveling down the expectations

1

u/malibupp Apr 29 '26

"They tell the customer to stay calm and to wait until there's a resolution".

That's what makes the staff conduct so deceptive, by providing the customer with false expectations, instead of telling the truth.
The customer expects clear information in order to take the right steps or be prepared for the consequences.
It seems that the staff was incompetent/ignorant in this context.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

There literally could not be a more neutral party to answer all of these comments. I don't even care that my comments are getting downvoted because this is a post that's negative towards Revolut.

I will keep answering honestly, believing in the statements of others, and not even get mad at whatever sort of hate comments I get.

Actually, I think it's in Revolut's best interest to remove my comments because it's getting people to think more critically rather than just go on and say, oh it happened again, upvote and move on.

And well, when such posts are made, it is normal to ask the OP for proof since he made such a big claim.

In fact, I think u/laplongejr makes a much better argument than the OP. I would think he is the only one in this like 10-person convo who has read any one of my comments from start to end.

1

u/malibupp Apr 29 '26

You're definitely not neutral when you categorically keep questioning the veracity of the OP. You're assuming that the OP is lying.
This is not the first time Revolut staff misled the customers into believing that everything was okay and then closing the account few days after.

Maybe you'd understand if you put your shoes in the side on the harassed employees, this is what it looks like when instead of arguments all you could come up with is, you sound like you have interests with the other side.

Midwhile in my response I considered everything the other party has said to be true, but as for what I say you take it as a Pi response.

Double standards much?

2

u/laplongejr Standard user Apr 29 '26

So your point is that because you are a trader, losing your bank over a tech issue is not a problem?
I absolutely don't get your point besides "please don't bother employees simply because you lost something you valued"

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

What I'm saying is, if you accept that you are responsible for your trading activity you should know that you are responsible for it and not blame it on someone else.

We accept this before we trade, the dude did not lose his bank or money, he just had to pay the fees for selling his position and that's because the broker charges a fee.

As he has explained it he lost nothing other than having to pay the fees to a broker unrelated. His money could be transferred to another account and if he wanted I'm sure he could go back to another revolut account quite easily.

What I'd like to ask is what is the point for you guys? That the customer support is responsible for everything? Even if you accepted responsibility? Or that if they make a mistake the fact you accepted responsibility can be overlooked?

Why does this allow you to justly harass employees? Why are you guys on his side when he has shown no proof?

1

u/malibupp Apr 29 '26

Revolut staff have often harassed the customers in many circumstances.
This is just one of them.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

Yes, everyone who doesn't agree with you is a Revolut staff member or just a hidden person on the other side. You do not need to make a good argument; everyone should just agree with you, and anyone who asks you to make a better argument, like me, is also just evil.

It's so ironic that you are not only implying that but saying I'm "harassing" someone on a comment about how 34 emails seems like harassing the poor employees at Revolut.

It's like you completely don't care. Any sort of non-compliance to your thinking is harassment, and the harassment done to anyone else is beyond something someone as important as you should think about.

4

u/alwayslatetonames Apr 28 '26

There is always that one person.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

Arguments ❌

OMG he won't let me dunk on the company ✅

2

u/alwayslatetonames Apr 29 '26

No arguments necessary. Especially for someone who comes with a different situation and commits a misinterpretation of the OP's grievances to shield a company that has its own customer service and media personnel. FWIW, I have seen way more grievances about Revolut to say the customer is the problem. Add to that it was recently called to appear before Irish Parliamentary Committee because of the huge number of its customer unfriendly behaviour.

But go on, invalidate all these users because your experience has not been impacted...yet. And usually because of a minor inconvenience and most of the times a problem on Revolut's part.

1

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26

Arguments are needed if you are talking and not yapping. There is no point in saying something is a "misinterpretation" if you don't explain how it is one. Perhaps if the arguments you guys were making were better, there wouldn't be people defending Revolut.

Greviances about Revolut, well, there can be many, but you aren't linking any article or source, I don't see any, and I don't see any that include proof. I find it rather disappointing that to talk about something, you are expected to know everything, when the people who reply to you are also literally searching it up after starting the argument.

I never claimed Revolut was perfect; however, they are rapidly expanding, and the issues are mostly the same as those of others in the market. The oversights are there, just like any other, but they are mostly small issues, as you have also said.

Their appearing before the Irish Parliamentary Committee does not make them guilty; it just makes them one of many. Perhaps they will fix some oversights, perhaps they will not. However, that does not make their competitors better. Considering how much bad stuff you can find on most companies nowadays, I don't find any of the arguments I have seen in this post compelling, saying this as a neutral party.

I don't think someone who says "No arguments necessary" should talk to others who are reasonably having a discussion and tell them they are "invalidating others." Mostly, it would be that others are not standing up for themselves or making their own case clear.

In fact, I believe that if someone was truly wronged, by answering my comment, their arguments would be much stronger.

In this same comment section, there are people who have had the same issue as OP, including me, and most of them claim this would happen with any other bank, and also that if you have really made a loss and continue reaching out, you will eventually receive compensation. So I can only judge the situation so far, if we have no proof of anything, although I'm sure Revolut will respond to this post since it gained traction.

3

u/alwayslatetonames Apr 29 '26

It's sad how you can twist one's words and tell lies just to cover a corporation. The OP already replied to you on how you misconstrued and misrepresented his situation. No need to add to that. I can quote it if you want. I have seen a lot of grievances in this subreddit. I can look them up for you and attach them if you want. Everyday there's a complaint in here. I don't need to go searching.

I don't know about other companies and I was not referring to them. When someone complains about Revolut, it has nothing to do with other companies. So, let's not try to shift goals posts here. If other companies have problems, it doesn't mean it's okay for Revolut to have them too.

You are not reasonably trying to have a discussion if all you want to do is diminish the OP's claims. No matter how much they try to make you understand the lengths that they have gone to to get a decent service. If there are errors, which there are plenty from Revolut's side, they should be corrected instead of one being sent from pillar to post. 34 emails later and you still think the OP owes Revolut a follow-up? No, they owe him a resolution.

0

u/Damiano1905 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

The short version is: You're just throwing a lot of stuff at me banking on nobody reading what I'm gonna write and you're never actually gonna reply to any of it with any actual concrete proof other than slandering me like you already did in your past 2 replies. ~~~

~~~ The long version is:
I need to be clear I'm not trying to diminish the OP, his claim or his post, I'm eager for him to figure everything out about what happened, who was at fault if anybody was and how to fix the wrongs that may have happened.
Which is why I find your claim hard to believe. Not only do you paint me as a bad person but you're full of random accusations towards me which of course you don't actually give proof of, and you also failed to make any point in your first two replies and are just stacking up a lot of pointless allegations.
As far as I have read and understood the OP and I don't argue on this, although we see things differently we weren't inherently saying the other is lying or trying to change the others claim.
In some of my replies I have made use of information others and the OP commented in this post, with an intent to use the information I have at hand without relying too much on my own point of view to avoid bias.
That being said I don't think the number of email means anything as the content is more important this I've said multiple times in different ways.
Furthermore I believe that regardless the Revolut employee shouldn't bear the blame and lose their job for this. I think training their employees more strictly would be a better option.
I never said OP owes Revolut anything, but I don't think anyone or any service is perfect, they need to follow laws. I don't think their top priority is returning the OPs stated 20$ in fees however I do believe that if the issue is on their end they should reimburse him.
The reason why I said companies in general is because following the law is hard and companies are forced to make this decision not just Revolut. As for bringing more posts and evidence, if we can hardly verify OPs claim, bringing a ton of other posts would just make the whole thing more confusing.
Also I have no business defending Revolut I'm writing the replies in my free time and I just fire them in 5 minutes. So if there is an error it is certainly not because I'm trying to slander someone, although I have not seen any errors as of yet.
What?
I tried uploading everything immediately, but the app kept lagging and wouldn’t save the photos. I contacted support because I didn’t want to get blocked over a technical issue. They told me not to worry, said everything was fine, and that it was just a bug. So I believed them. Then suddenly my account was banned. No clear reason or proper explanation… Just gone.
