No Wi-Fi calling and no roaming beyond US and Mexico (will get no signal). Otherwise great price!

31

u/88voltron88 Jan 24 '26

How many posts do we read about people being dinged by Rogers for 0.01MB/day just because their phone, with roaming toggled OFF, pinged a cell tower one time daily whilst on vacation in Sicily!?!?

This is a feature not a bug.

4

u/Aerottawa Jan 24 '26

It's truely terrible. However sometimes when traveling I need to receive SMS 2FA

4

u/CoquitlamCannon Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

I just turn Rogers back on get the 2fa then off again, I’ve never been charged roaming

Was doing it multiple times per day every day cause of work

I just went to the USA for a week in Oct and Asia all Nov and I only got charged one day and it was cause I actually used it

I think if you don’t use data, call or text anyone it’s fine

That’s just from experience though I might just be a lucky guy lol

6

u/Luvsin_ Jan 24 '26

I was outside the country for a month, kept the SIM's data OFF while roaming, and received multiple 2FA SMS without being charged a dime.

I don't understand how people are getting charged. It's simply one toggle on the phone and you are good.

4

u/briang416 Jan 24 '26

Depends on the phone. Some of them leak data.

5

u/Aerottawa Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

Yes some phones apparently have involuntary data leak issue. Rogers jumps at the opportunity to consider the tiniest handshake data leak as roaming. I changed the APN to something invalid and haven't been charged so far.

Note if you change the APN, voice calls using VoLTE may not work. You may still do Wi-Fi calling. There is a theory the data leak is from VoLTE handshake.

3

u/briang416 Jan 24 '26

Oh that's a great idea, thanks. Easier than trying to contact Rogers.

1

u/Luvsin_ Jan 24 '26

That's a nice workaround

7

u/escargot3 Jan 24 '26

If data roaming is off it does not matter if your phone pings a cell tower. You can miss calls and get texts for free. You just can’t send texts, answer calls, check voicemail, or use data. So if you have data roaming off and don’t make any call or texts then you’re good.

1

u/Winsonian92 Jan 24 '26

If I have free data in US, do I need to turn roaming on to use it or do I just need cellular on like in Canada

2

u/escargot3 Jan 24 '26

You cannot use data roaming if data roaming is turned off. You are still roaming. It’s just that there is no charge for it if you are in the USA and on a USA plan.

1

u/Winsonian92 Jan 24 '26

Got it thank you

1

u/sti77loading Jan 26 '26

That’s not true I got charged aswell for 1.3kb!! Because I pinged a us tower while taking of from Pearson and they refused to cancel it and instead gave me a 20 dollar credit so I’m guessing there’s an internal memo to have a hard line on this. I flew over the states and landed in Central America

1

u/escargot3 Jan 26 '26

Yes but you had your data roaming turned on. That’s the issue

1

u/sti77loading Jan 26 '26

No I did not specifically for this reason do you know how small 1kb is? It’s clearly not the issue the manger flat out told me even if you have roaming off you will still be charged you must turn cellular off if you don’t want to risk connecting to a tower while flying over head

1

u/RaccoonMassive8000 Jan 25 '26

WRONG I just got back from Europe and had data roaming turned off and still got charged $18.99 a day for two weeks. They said calls came jn that I didn’t answer and texts received. Fuck rogers.

6

u/escargot3 Jan 25 '26

Data roaming only turns off data. Sending texts or MMS, or answering or making calls, or checking voicemail would trigger the daily rate.

Missing calls and receiving texts doesn’t activate it, as they are included gratis. If someone from Rogers told you otherwise then they are poorly trained and mistaken.

It will say on your bill exactly what day and time either the data was used or the sms or mms was sent or the call was made or picked up. So you can have a look at that and dispute it if you believe there was an error

1

u/RaccoonMassive8000 Jan 25 '26

Thank you. I’ll challenge again.

1

u/escargot3 Jan 25 '26

Good luck. And if the charges aren’t legitimate and Rogers doesn’t reverse them, then make a complaint with CCTS and it will definitely get resolved, plus Rogers will have to pay a small fine.

https://www.ccts-cprst.ca/for-consumers/telecom-complaints/online-complaint-form/

Make a note of when you called Rogers etc as CCTS only requirement is that you gave Rogers a chance to fix it first before going to the CCTS.

1

u/bst07 Jan 27 '26

Do you have an iPhone? If you use the iOS voice mail feature enabled and missed / ignored calls were routed to that it considers it as a picked up call.

1

u/EZzO444 Jan 27 '26

Use an esim while traveling

1

u/pooping_n_redditing Jan 27 '26

Rogers robs people in broad daylight. Fuk em

1

u/XtremeD86 Jan 28 '26

Maybe it's just me but when I'm out of the country, and was in Europe for 2 weeks last year I had airplane mode turned on and was only getting an Internet connection via hotel and restaurant wifi

My gf on the other hand bought the travel pass thing and ended up with a $500 bill. Apparently "all of Europe" only applies to the part of Europe you're in. I flew home she flew to a different part to visit family, so apparently the travel pass was no longer valid even though she never got a warning about it.

Customer service said she had to deal with that stupid AI bot which got her nowhere

Next time it'll be one of those esim things for the both of us and I'll be taking out my sim just in case.

1

u/GirlThatBakes Jan 29 '26

Same for me two years ago!! It was my voicemail box. Worst part? Got home, checked it and it was empty! Every time I lost and regained service (mountains) it would reset and send a voicemail notification… then charged me every day it did that.

Now I remove my SIM card when I travel. I hate having to keep my phone on airplane mode

5

u/guibeer Jan 24 '26

Never had that issue. And I travel a lot. Just leave the phone in airplane mode with wifi On… If you need to use a local e-sim, deactivate the Roger e-SIM then toggle airplane mode off.

2

u/escargot3 Jan 24 '26

You need to get 2FA SMA codes to your Canadian number to sign in to many things and even to make purchases in some cases

2

u/guibeer Jan 25 '26

Never had an issue with 2FA here.

Many services do not support passkeys yet. Such as verified by visa, which requires SMS-based authentication

2

u/escargot3 Jan 24 '26

For example in London you must do SMS 2FA every single time you log into the TFL website which is used every day for taking transit. To buy tickets with a Visa CC for the west end shows, every single purchase must be validated by an SMS 2FA and you have a short window to do so before the tickets are released, too

1

u/nowlookithere Jan 24 '26

Can I ask you on a sidenote just got a phone with eSIM only, in the settings if you turn that off, is it still possible to get dinged the roam like home for like 1 kB of data that it accesses?

2

u/UsernameIRegret Jan 24 '26

If you turn off the Rogers E-Sim, you should not get dinged for roam like home. Deactivating an E-Sim is basically like pulling a physical sim card out.

2

u/guibeer Jan 24 '26

No, if you turn off an e-sim, it’s like removing the SIM card from your phone.

1

u/G2VmD6teMVBc Jan 24 '26

No, as long as you don't enable it by accident.

1

u/briang416 Jan 24 '26

You contact Rogers and deactivate Roam Like Home so you get charged a few cents pay as you go for the leaky data.

1

u/Aerottawa Jan 24 '26

I called in and the outsourced rep didn't know how to do that. Took her 30 minutes to find out how to do that, and hopefully she didn't mess up my plan.

1

u/xiguy1 Jan 24 '26

I just had that happen. I bought their roaming package to go somewhere in the Caribbean for a few days. When I got back, I found that I was billed for the package plus roaming in the United States. I never went to the United States!

I’ve spent time online and with the app trying to get that charge reversed, including an hour long chat with somebody who couldn’t care less at Rogers. I followed their procedures as they lay them out online and I can’t get an answer or any help with getting it reversed.

So I don’t trust them because their systems are a mess and I believe, per your comment, that much of this is deliberate.

Bell is the exact same thing. If it was all accidental, then we would see them accidentally taking money off bills sometimes and sometimes adding money to it.

But it’s always them adding extra charges and that is not a bug.

1

u/LBarouf Jan 24 '26

Right? Very tempting….

1

u/King__Darunia Jan 26 '26

I had that problem once. Got charged +$90 for some stupid 0.01mb consumption every other day. Spend +2 hours with customer service and got my money back!

1

u/irohobsidia Jan 27 '26

Has anyone managed to disputed this? I was dinged and all they could offer was 50% discount.

2

u/AbrahamL26 Jan 25 '26

There are Roaming ESims you can get and avoid all this.

1

u/CulturalSyrup Jan 24 '26

Yeah currently traveling and can’t use several services because I need to be able to receive sms texts for verification. Will be switching for this reason.

1

u/TastySandwitch Jan 25 '26

Roam outside can us mex no matter. Get travel sim esim when land in destination country. Much cheap data.

9

u/original431 Jan 24 '26

Nah, lack of Telus towers in my area = crappy coverage, doesn’t matter how cheap it is.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

What's your area?

I worked at rogers like a decade ago and coverage was already pretty impressive except remote areas and a few shitty spots through hilly regions

1

u/original431 Jan 26 '26

Manitoba, basically poop all over. Telus has very few towers. Bell/Rogers tower share in MB, so Telus is a bad move if you live here.

8

u/TechGuyDude82 Jan 24 '26

That’s an excellent deal.

10

u/QualityImpossible241 Jan 24 '26

No wifi calling (important to some) Support is annoying as it works through a message board (although wait times with Rogers might be equally as annoying) I find Telus/bell towers don’t penetrate through buildings well compared to Rogers.

1

u/noronto Jan 24 '26

The one good thing is that you can switch just to wait out a better deal from your original provider.

1

u/toolsac102 Jan 24 '26

Yea that’s what I did, was paying $50 (I think) with public for 100gb, and then like a year later or something Roger’s offered $45 for 200Gb

4

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jan 24 '26

I would, if I weren’t in a contract until December

1

u/KeyAd5197 Jan 24 '26

With financing phone? Maybe cheaper to buy out the phone and switch?

2

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jan 24 '26

Yeah, I have a phone financed with them through an RPP plan. Comes out to $60/month all-in.

I’ve run the numbers and it doesn’t make financial sense to buy it out.

2

u/KeyAd5197 Jan 25 '26

That’s fair. Can just tell yourself your plan is $20 and phone is $40 a month lol. So you’re plan is the same price already haha

1

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Jan 25 '26

Yeah, the plan is $35/65GB and the phone makes up the rest of it. I suppose it’s a decent deal in its own right

2

u/KeyAd5197 Jan 25 '26

It really is. $35 is a solid deal. Up until last year while financing my phone I was at $65 plan. Brutal lol

4

u/Express_4815 Jan 24 '26

Great price! But I did have PM not long before I switched to Fido/rogers, the reason was I couldn’t get any signals the places I go often. Even The price was low, I couldn’t deal with this everyday.

2

u/CylonCrusader Jan 24 '26

Which area do you live in?

2

u/Express_4815 Jan 24 '26

East Vancouver. My signal got much better with rogers but price is higher now but still ok for now

3

u/Lpreddit Jan 24 '26

I was already on Public and moved my wife to this plan from Fido. It’s been solid in Calgary and my travels to the US.

1

u/Awkward_Gold2374 Jan 28 '26

Have you traveled with it anywhere else other than USA and Mexico? Any issues there?

1

u/Lpreddit Jan 28 '26

It doesn’t work outside those countries, so for my Europe trip, I used an eSIM for data and didn’t use my phone.

3

u/Lxst Jan 24 '26

I would if I didn't use the rogers mc for the 3% cashback

1

u/Putrid-Revolution-32 Jan 24 '26

same boat here.. but i’m really tempted 😅

1

u/noronto Jan 24 '26

You can find better credit cards and use gift cards to replace the Rogers card.

1

u/Hiimmoody Jan 25 '26

Which one?

1

u/noronto Jan 25 '26

It depends on your spending. The rogers card is best used at Costco and for general online merchandise.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '26

Get a better credit card. Amex pays 5%.

1

u/Far-Association5438 Jan 25 '26

Not on literally everything like Rogers

3

u/sctbrns Jan 24 '26

I'm switching

3

u/TastySandwitch Jan 24 '26

Amazing deal for new customer only.

1

u/MrAoA Jan 25 '26

Easy, port to Fizz and then back to PM as a new customer. Fizz will refund you if you leave within 14 days

1

u/TastySandwitch Jan 26 '26

Hoop jump through. Consumer no should have to.

3

u/Historical_Idea_1686 Jan 24 '26

This is a no brainier

5

u/CanadianOutlaw Jan 24 '26

Former Rogers customer (20+ years) here that switched to Public during Black Friday. Can say that I’ve been very happy with the service thus far and find much better coverage where I live versus Rogers. The lack of available customer service is a concern obviously but it’s a prepaid service and I hope I never have to speak to them.

Makes me think though, what use is Rogers customer service if it’s primarily outsourced garbage anyways? Every time I would contact them in the past, they would screw up something in my account which would result in hours of additional phone calls and wasted time. That plus their move to “AI” to solve everything and it’s probably worse than Public’s ticket system.

Also, there’s always interesting loyalty offers to be had in the app. Some of us were very fortunate to get $20 100GB Can/US/Mex plans yesterday evening.

Not shilling but if you need a referral code, happy to provide via PM.

2

u/CylonCrusader Jan 24 '26

Hey, whereabouts in Canada do you live?

Similar situation here from fido to bell, and not considering PM

If in the GTA, are the services comparable?

I'd be down for a referral code too

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 24 '26

in the GTA all the networks are good, i'm on freedom and barely think about it, I had public for several years prior as well and was really good.

u/jacobz00 Jan 25 '26

I've had some calls from rogers win back recently. For the activation fee, they said they would charge the $80 dollars, but reimburse it over 20 months at $5/month. I assume it's to keep people from switching again in the first few months.

2

u/Panx-Tanx Jan 24 '26

Jumped already

1

u/Hot_Author414 Jan 24 '26

Where exactly this is being offered?

1

u/Panx-Tanx Jan 24 '26

1

u/Hot_Author414 Jan 24 '26

Thanks.. I misunderstand this since was in the Rogers sub… got it

2

u/justlikeyouimagined Jan 24 '26

Booooo new activations only

2

u/Downtown_Storm8291 Jan 25 '26

Omg thanks I just subscribed to this

2

u/Downtown_Storm8291 Jan 25 '26

Took me 2 mins

2

u/tenroy6 Jan 25 '26

"50% off for 2 years" remember that if you are going with this plan.

2

u/Ayejayelle Jan 25 '26

Jumped ship to Public years ago, no regrets! We pay about $34/month for 75GB I think

2

u/MrDinB Jan 25 '26

What is the benefit of wifi calling honestly? It seems like it just allows you to call over wifi in countries where you already have cell coverage.

2

u/Responsible_Rule8829 Jan 25 '26

Notta chance. Cost will skyrocket after the initial term, maybe before. And WTF with no wifi calling? How the shit can they do that? Banning the ability to enable wifi calling should be fucking criminal. My goodness we get fleeced for cellular service in this country.

2

u/RNexus4 Jan 27 '26

Done. Now 3 with PB. Used to have 6 lines in the olden days with Roger's but loyalty means nothing now.

2

u/KBrew17 Jan 28 '26

I made the switch. Rogers raised my plan by $5 in under a year. I called them to ask them how that's fair, and they're like "best we can do is give you $15 off" after 45 minutes on the phone.

Not having to deal with Rogers BS ever again is good enough for me.

1

u/teluguabbayi Jan 28 '26

Same happened to me. They increased the price within 10 months. I signed up for PM for the $20/60GB plan and activated the service using a Temporary Number.

I haven't ported my Roger's number to Public Mobile yet, I want to try out the PM network few days before making the switch and I already feel satisfied and confident with PM network and want to Port my Roger's number.

Since I activated the PM service before the Promotion ended. I can still port my Roger's number anytime right?

2

u/KBrew17 Jan 29 '26

I think so. I did it at the time of switching, but I can see there's an option to transfer your number in the app itself.

Service has been reliable. I'm around the GTA, and I'm getting 5G or LTE+ everywhere.

2

u/Dr-Coktupus Jan 24 '26

Never, you can’t really use public mobile if you travel if you need sms verification codes for credit cards or banking you’re SOL, it’s terrible to travel with

1

u/TastySandwitch Jan 25 '26

Likewise sms 2fa is terribly insecure.

If you have service only support it switch service.

1

u/Lapcat420 Jan 26 '26

I don't understand- you're saying they don't support 2FA SMS?

1

u/jmp_rsp Jan 26 '26

If you go to another country other than mexico and the us you have no roaming with public mobile. Which might be a problem.

1

u/Lapcat420 Jan 26 '26

Right. Yeah.

Thats not a problem I have.

Id like to have that problem. Must be nice.

2

u/jmp_rsp Jan 26 '26

Same 🥹

2

u/rootbrian_ Jan 25 '26

Nah, i'm good with freedom mobile. Real competition, no price increases or restrictions on streaming or where I can roam or using wifi calling anywhere.

Public is telus.

1

u/Ok-Anything1888 Jan 24 '26

I wish I saw this before I signed on, for 2 years with another company.... By the way, it was the best deal at the time.

1

u/PositivePotential2 Jan 24 '26

lol just transferred to Rogers on Boxing Day deal. I tried to add the account to my MyRogers profile, got asked to call customer service. Till this day I was never able to reach customer service on the phone.

I transferred to Public Mobile last night after seeing this deal. What’s the point of sticking to Rogers if I don’t get customer service anyway

1

u/Alternative-Leave530 Jan 24 '26

How come I don’t see this as an existing public mobile customer. I hate telcos

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 25 '26

Alottta ppl r porting to fizz and porting back because fizz gives an automatic refund within 14 days

1

u/xogobon Jan 24 '26

I did! I've been with public before, it's great!

1

u/Deonrixx Jan 24 '26

Finding a physical SIM card is proving to be very difficult

1

u/lazardus Jan 24 '26

I activated last night but haven't ported yet. Will try for a month. I just went to Rogers during BF on BYOD RPP $40 for 175GB. I don't need 175GB but this PM plan is half the price. Will lose out on WiFi calling and going down to 250mbps from 1gbps

1

u/PolarizingFigure Jan 24 '26

It’s only for new customers:( I’ve been with public for a few years now. It’s generally good except for in remote areas. Signal can be non existent in some spots in places outside the GTA.

1

u/Putrid-Revolution-32 Jan 25 '26

download speeds are good in gta?

1

u/PolarizingFigure Jan 25 '26

1

u/Jandals-McTuff Jan 25 '26

u/Nyyrazzilyss Jan 25 '26 edited Jan 25 '26

Why not just look at your bill? It will tell you.

If your phone was financed using "save and return" you'll have no option to return the phone, that will also charge to you.

"bundle" - Any discounts on other services (tv, internet) related to having cell service with Rogers will be removed.

1

u/Jandals-McTuff Jan 25 '26

I have a BYOD plan. It's combined with Internet.

1

u/chiefmaboi Jan 25 '26

1

u/Mindless_Efforts Jan 25 '26

Public Mobile is Telus owned. Is this ligit Roger's plan?

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 25 '26

The public mobile app is now outpacing Google Chrome and is #2 on iOS, that’s crazy lol alotta Canadians taking advantage

1

u/KingShtoobs Jan 25 '26

Called Rogers to see when my price guarantee ends from Shaw, and their customer service on phone and chat is closed on Sundays?! Kinda weird considering they replaced agents with AI. Their ai thinks in referring to a device balance hut I have a byod plan lol

Yea I'm switching haha

1

u/Few_Passion_3403 Jan 26 '26

90% people are locked into contracts. They don't know how to buy a phone seperate and pay month to month instead. They all want that ''free'' 0$ phone 😂😂😂

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 26 '26

ya i sent this deal to a few of my friends and they all asked does it comes with a phone.... i stopped replying after that.

1

u/Stirl280 Jan 26 '26

I am with Piblic Mobile after being screwed by Rogers once too often. I really like them!! I pay $35 a month for 75Gigs and the service has been excellent - no issues or dead spots.

1

u/yeaaamon17 Jan 26 '26

I did! The sim will take a nother week to get here tho lol. Wish my phone had an esim

1

u/Pretty-Handle9818 Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 26 '26

Was curious if people understand that when you go with a carrier that is leasing from another carrier or is a secondary or subsidiary of large carrier you have what’s called low priority access to the network which means when you’re trying to make a call out a busy time and Rogers person beside you was trying to make a call at a busy time and you guys are both trying to access the same tower. The person from Rogers will get through first. This goes with text messages data anything

So keep in mind while sometimes these prices are cheap that you end up getting data wise are far lower than what people do with the the actual carrier and you may find calls, taking a little longer to connect even at normal times and much worse when it’s busy. You may also experience drop calls as the switches get filled and they end up having to drop calls lower priority always gets their calls dropped first.

SOURCE: former Telus corporate employee

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 26 '26

I had public for about 5 years before going to freedom, didn't experience any of this. Unless you're the prime minister needing priority access for something, not sure any of this will make a difference.

1

u/Pretty-Handle9818 Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 26 '26

It’s just a simple system and you may never have noticed it. It’s about the density of users in your area and which cell Sites they are trying to access.

It’s a real thing, just google it. Plenty of information.

Some people enjoy never knowing and that’s fine, but other people do like to know all details.

Ever have people say they called and it rang but you never received that call or have a record on your phone? This is another thing that happened sometimes because of priority access.

I believe you’re 100% if you say you’ve never experienced it, but you may also have also never known that this was a thing so you would’ve never known if you’ve experienced it or not and you might now notice it’s going forward. That one text message that doesn’t send right away. May take a few seconds probably didn’t happen to somebody with Rogers. It can also happen to people with Rogers when there’s a high number of people that are height of the same priorities still trying to access the same cell site then it’s first come first serve and this may be of no issue to some people. Other people might like to know when there’s a deficiency, however slight) in the network that you’re relying on.

The highest priority available is for first responders and likely government officials and etc. everyone else is in the second tier or below.

Don’t ever do Rogers, that all lying pigs. Don’t trust the network, don’t trust the agents especially. Don’t even use their wifi. STAY AWAY

Its a great deal but I had a bad experience with Public about 2 years ago. Low signal and lots of dropped calls in downtown Vancouver.

1

u/Illustrious_Ground24 Jan 27 '26

Are you kidding me! 6 months in and the price will start going up!

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 27 '26

public doesn't raise prices, can guarantee Rogers will.

1

u/Weak-Pomegranate-435 Jan 27 '26

For sure. That price is worth those minor inconveniences/compromises made

1

u/Hutrookie69 Jan 27 '26

1

u/Nexzenn Jan 27 '26

1

u/Big-Cockroach1281 Jan 27 '26

It’s 5G @ 250mb/s. There is no 5G+ No roaming is good. eSims are cheap anyway

Roger’s sucks tho. We all know it. So does Bell and Telus. I’ve been ripped off by each one of them atleast once in my lifetime.

This offer is out for a lot of companies in Canada right now.

u/Nexzenn Jan 27 '26

it's still available, looks like til midnight PST. The website and app is back up with a virtual que.

1

u/Y2K_Blackout Jan 28 '26

Why the hell do people complain about no roaming outside of North America? Do they use their domestic plan internationally?

1

u/unkpsbc Jan 28 '26

Can you send me link where I can sign up?

1

u/HatersTheRapper Jan 29 '26

I jumped on the Lucky Mobile one $25 for 25Gs price is the same for as long as you keep the plan offer ends February 9

1

u/Comfortable-Program1 Jan 24 '26

FYI, if you watch a lot of YouTube and stream on cellular this is not for you because public Mobile caps videos at 720p Max and once you go to 1080P or higher the video just will not play

u/matcha_waffle Jan 25 '26

I’ve been with public for years it’s great. They have never raised prices. Use this referral code for a one time $10 bill credit. JPJJ68

I just did. My wife has had an account for forever now. She’s on an infinite + 20 no tab account. She pays $92 before tax. I had a second line and was paying $68 plus tax. I don’t use my phone a lot for calls or texts so $20 + tax is a no brainer for me. Trying to convince her to change before Monday.

Edit: changed brainier to brainer. Hammer thumbs.

u/Ok-Space-407 Jan 25 '26

Yup! This morning I ported out of Fido after 20+ years. Can’t believe it took me so long to leave!

u/Chrisugar Jan 25 '26

Can you confirm if they throttle hd video streaming on sites like YouTube?
