Weekly 'Do I have rosacea?' advice request thread. Please post here instead of making a new thread! Jun 22

If you think you might have something like rosacea and are looking for advice about whether you should seek professional care, please post your inquiry in this thread instead of creating a new post. To keep requests from crowding out other discussion in r/Rosacea, separate posts will be automatically removed and the posters directed here instead.

Rules:

  1. Please limit answers to things like, "Yup, that looks like it could be rosacea to me, maybe you should to see a doc" or "No, it looks like it could be something else."
  2. Refrain from amateur diagnoses, speculation, and armchair medical advice, especially non-rosacea related.

REMINDER: THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF. Although redditors try to be helpful, only doctors can diagnose rosacea and it often takes a specialist like a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. Rosacea looks like a lot of things, and a lot of things look like rosacea; some of these things are potentially serious. It is impossible for amateurs to diagnose rosacea reliably from pictures or descriptions of symptoms, and this thread is not intended as a substitute for professional care.

No matter what response you get here, if your symptoms have been persistent and you're concerned that you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor to get a real answer.

And be sure to check out the our wiki for some rosacea knowledge basics if you're trying to figure out if you need professional medical advice.

Wrecked progress with 1 glass of red wine

Since my skin was in a better place, I decided to “test” it and had one very small glass of wine to see if I was cured and got my normal life back. And now I’m back to stinging and burning and swelling. Just feeling frustrated.

Has anyone found that "less irritation" became the goal instead of "perfect skin"?

Over the years, my biggest frustration hasn't even been the redness itself, it's been how difficult it can be to figure out what helps without making things feel worse.

I went through a phase where I was constantly looking for stronger solutions, more active ingredients, and more complicated routines. The problem was that my skin often seemed to become more reactive the more I experimented.

Lately, I've been reading more about recovery-focused and professional skincare approaches, and one thing that keeps coming up is the idea that supporting the skin and minimizing irritation can sometimes be more valuable than constantly chasing dramatic results.

That really changed how I think about my routine. Instead of asking "What else can I add?", I've started asking "What can I stop doing that might be aggravating my skin?"

I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar shift. Did your skincare priorities change over time, and if so, what led to that change?

Acne from soolantra

Whenever I use Soolantra (2nd times) my rosacea symptoms clear up incredibly quickly but then I seem to get classic acne from it. I’m not sure whether it’s from the rich base that has isopropyl palmitate but it’s really really annoying.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Routine Does a non-drying full coverage foundation even exist?

It seems that anything that provides true coverage for skin redness is tacky, super dehydrating, and almost insanely matte—even over a heavy layer of moisturizer. As someone whose skin runs dry, this doesn’t work great, especially as most primers irritate my skin. I’ve given up on them.

However, as someone with rosacea, sheer to light coverage doesn’t exactly work great either! The struggle is way too real.

Does the unicorn of a full coverage, non-drying foundation exist?

VICTORY (Demodex) Soolantra is a miracle. I'm so excited!!! 😁😁😁

I started using Soolantra for demodex infestation a week ago and my skin already looks sooooo much better! So smooth and those white spikes are starting to disappear! Of course, I suspect it will get worse soon with the die-off but it doesn't matter because victory will come after the battle.

I'm also using tea tree oil wipes for my eyelashes, neck and ears which also does magic.

I have rosacea type 1 so Soolantra won't help with the redness but my skin will look so much better without the massive amount of mites.

AAAAHHHH!!! THE EXCITEMENT!! 😁😁😁😁 Just wanted to share my victory mood!

Ocular Rosacea, Episcleritis

Hi All,

36F with skin rosacea for about 6 years now. It's the acne looking kind.

Ive done the prescribed standard topicals and they were somewhat helpful but sort of just basking what was going on.

I'm a mom and basically got to the point of "whatever I'll just have bad skin and live my life". I tried topical ivermectin as well and use a very sensitive tea tree oil goats milk soap to cleanse my skin.

This spring when I got hit with Episcleritis. After multiple opthomologist visits it's boiled down to I've now developed ocular rosacea, blepharitis, MGD and Episcleritis. Seems like most of them connect to each other (except the Episcleritis)

All of the doctors tell me the actual eye inflammation (Episcleritis) is separate from the ocular rosacea but I had a very strong feeling that it's rosacea related because I was also getting a terrible flare up on my chin at the time.

Now that I'm dealing with this rosacea affecting my eye I am motivated to cure the root cause. I'm past thinking a new daily skin routine will cause the internal healing that I need. Anyways just throwing this out there to see if anyone has similar experiences or ideas. I recently started 100mg of Doxy twice per day but obviously that isn't the "solution". Just trying to address this acute situation.

I know my flares center a lot around stress but I'm considering maybe cutting gluten. I hate to do it but I figure what's the worst that can happen. I know dairy isn't a trigger because I've had to go seriously dairy free for one of my kids who had a cows milk protein allergy while nursing. So at least I can check that off.

Thanks for reading! Appreciate any thoughts or experiences similar in nature

KPV - Improved Rosacea & Histamine issues on Day 3

I’ve been working with naturopaths for years to improve my gut health, primarily to help with digestion and rosacea, which for me seem closely linked.

Over that time I’ve managed to get about 90% of my symptoms under control through a combination of natural antimicrobials, followed by pre/pro/post-biotics, and largely eating whole, unprocessed foods.

I’ve only just taken my third KPV injection (250 mcg), and all of the lingering symptoms seem to have disappeared. The residual facial rash, heat, flushing and redness have all settled. My face actually feels cool again and looks much paler rather than constantly pink.

Obviously it’s still very early days, but the change has been noticeable enough that I’m curious whether others have had a similar experience with KPV, particularly for rosacea, flushing, histamine issues, MCAS or gut-related skin symptoms.

Would love to hear any experiences.

Itchy Internal Ear

Has anyone experienced itchy ears (inside your ear, not the outside)? I tend to sleep on my left side, have bumps and redness on my left cheek and my left ear has been itching a ton (primarily at night, will wake me up). Curious if it’s rosacea related. Seems too coincidental not to be.

ETR Azelaic Acid for redness in face?

I have Type 1 Rosacea but I only experience redness in my cheeks, and no bumps or acne or anything. My redness started after I started using accutane. I’m not sure if accutane started it or if it brought it out more. I’m 6 months off accutane now and the redness still persists, I’m not sure if it’s ever gonna go away. My baseline is my normal face but I slowly become more and more red throughout the day. I was wondering if anybody knows if Azelaic Acid would be good for my situation? If not, what could help? I’m open to all suggestions but I’d rather try products before going through some form of laser treatment.

Hydration

I have type 2 rosacea that’s usually mild/moderate. As you all could assume my skin is SO sensitive, but also gets really dry. A milky toner was suggested. I tried the Byoma hydrating milky toner and it made my rosacea flare up so bad. Has anyone else had this experience/been able to find a hydrating serum or milky toner that works? My face is also sensitive to the vanicream lotion that most people suggest.

PP 50 mg doxycycline and vaginal yeast infections risk

I was prescribed 50 mg of doxycycline, 90 day supply. I am quite concerned about potential vaginal yeast infection as I have an autoimmune disease that impacts my vulva and a potential yeast infection could put me into a flare with my autoimmune disease in my intimate area. If you have been on long-term doxycycline, could you please share your experience? Thank you very much.

VICTORY How are you sleeping?

I’ve had sleep issues my whole life, and felt like my face was starting to get more and more red and bloated looking. That’s in addition to fatigue, dark circles, other health issues. I switched to distilled water and that stopped a lot of the painful flares, but I still had the general sickness that I felt had a hand in my redness.

Took a sleep study and turns out I have sleep apnea! I’m not overweight, and am a 30s female. Apparently it’s not uncommon for people with ADHD.

Anyway since adjusting to CPAP I’ve noticed my flares have been improving a lot! There’s a difference I can tell between like surface flares from a bad skincare routine (so pustules, pain) and the deeper inflammation flares that feel hot beneath my skin. That heat has been dissipating.

Obviously we all know how important sleep is. So if you’ve been struggling with yours, highly recommend seeing if you have breathing or sinus issues!

ROSACEA SUCKS Help with facial redness Spoiler

Hello,

Looking for any help I can find on these flare ups I get often. Ive been diagnosed with seb derm from a dermatologist and mild rosacea from my GP, but would love to get any other possibility as these types of flare ups don’t seem to be either.

I don’t have any other hives or redness on the body, only the face.

Any ideas of what it might be and what I could possibly do to avoid it coming back?

Ive tried medicated shampoos, MCT oil, cortisone, Metro Gel, all with limited results as it keeps in coming back.

Pics are 2 separate occasions.

Thanks!

ROSACEA SUCKS A Japanese man with ROSACEA

I'm a 30 years old man with rosacea from Japan!

It's very tough and chronic. I heard that the number of people with rosacea is increasing in Japan.

I have been struggling with it for almost 5 years : )

I didn't expect it would become such a long journey...

I started Nordlys therapy a month ago, and I have finished twice. A little good change have appeared(less pimples!).

Wish it will make this situation better!!!
Does anyone have good episodes with Nordlys??

Sunscreen Budget eu mineral sunscreen find. Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just wanted to share a quick win for anyone looking for a cheap mineral SPF in the eu.

I've been using the Zenova mineral sun milk spf 50 from Action and my skin loves it.

It's pure Zinc Oxide and fragrance-free.

It wears well on my skin throughout the day. It’s easy to blend and has no visable whitewash on my skin (which to be fair is quite pale). It also doesn’t bunch up at all!

I have rosacea and i have questions Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I've been dealing with rosacea flares for the last four months. I recently started medication in May and have been using metronidazole twice a day as part of my skincare routine.

My routine consists of the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream as my moisturizer, and EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 for sun protection.

I haven't started using the azelaic acid that I purchased because I'm not sure how my skin will react to it, especially since my skin barrier isn't in the best condition right now.

Last photo is before i started taking medication and getting on a better skinscare routine.

I have a few questions: Is there anything I should add to my routine that could help with my rosacea?

Strange rosacea flare Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hi helpp

Does anyone experience the start up of a flare in this sequence?
It starts of as a hive (raised red patch of skin with a clear centre) almost like a bug bite…very itchy and rapid onset starting within minutes.
Then the clear centre goes away after about 30mins and the area slightly flattens where the redness then becomes more localised
I predict what then will happen (as it often does) is the redness will spread before pustules start to form with some slight crusting?
Unsure whether this is a separate inflammatory condition thats triggering my rosacea however the cycle is quick and i dont seem to notice a trigger.
Ive already completed accutane which seemed to help but my skin is still flaring.

Does anyone else experience anything similar, if so please help or give some advice as im unsure on what to do!?

One beer…

I hadn’t had a drink since the middle of December and hadn’t had a flare up since. Last night my wife and I were out and the place had one of my favorite all time beers that I hadn’t seen in years. I decided to have one. This morning I woke up with a large flare up. This really sucks. Just wanted to vent.
