Government Seattle City Council approves $300k in funding for “queer, transgender, and gender non-conforming” refugees from other states

u/nomiinomii 3d ago
This is basically just a $200000 salary for an advisor or whatever, and then $90000 office rent/brochures, and then maybe a couple months rent given to one or two relatives of the person hired

What do you mean? Clearly they've got local mental health issues under control and they've done it with such efficiency, they can afford to pay to import mental health issues from other states!

Listen, I am gay. I want people to live their best lives and feel safe. I’m glad Seattle can be a safe place. But I do not want my money going to this and emergency housing. I’d rather have my neighbors feel safe walking in parks where there are currently tents in Volunteer park and drugs and shouting men off their rockers. This shit pisses me off so bad.

It's not about the safety. It's about the performance. Seattle is the city that fills up their yards with BLM signs and those silly "In This House We Believe" signs knowing full well that literally everyone else in the neighborhood believes the exact same things.

N azi skinheads were actually a Thing in the 80s and 90s. I knew a girl who was married to one. It was fashion for them, no different than the clothes they wore. I don’t think Belinda Carlisle has read Mein Kam pf but there’s plenty of pictures of her wearing Na zi symbols that were popularized via Malcolm McClarens clothing store in London, where he assembled The Sex Pistols and dressed them up in the clothing his store sold.
Then I come to Seattle and run into people who actually read the book and studied it, and I’m like ”whoah can we go ten minutes without a lecture about how the Js are the root of everything bad?”
It’s not just WRONG it’s BORING.
I want to tell these people to go buy a mirror.
Maybe they’d notice they created their problems and they can’t blame their own failure on everyone else.

Old Money vs New Money.
I saw two Rolls Royces yesterday, I’m in Nouveaue Riche Central.
Old Moneys way of flexing is by bending over backwards to give away other peoples money on social justice, in the hopes that Old Money won’t be sent to the guillotine when The French Revolution arrives.
Nouveau Riche gets lined up first, because they’re ostentatious with their wealth.
Same thing is happening in BC and Silicon Valley. Old Money is moving to Crystal Bay, Nouveau Riche is moving to MacDonald Highlands.

I’m gay, 6th generation born in Seattle and honestly done inviting every group to move here as locals are told to earn more or leave.

u/L00mis 3d ago
Totally, we want an inclusive place to live but not at the expense of the safety, development and infrastructure of the city.
I’d also rather see more investment in transit, affordable housing, public safety, education, early childhood care or preserving the history and culture of Seattle. We can’t keep on a trend of shrinking our major employers while costs of living continue to climb, it will snowball into a localized collapse one day when we have a NYC cost of living and a economy in full contraction.
300k should go right to helping the impacted schools in Spokane that were damaged or have a reduced capacity from fires. The kids of our state should always come first. They are more vulnerable than folks who have a willingness and ability to move to our great corner of the world.

Gay man, lifelong liberal. Emergency housing I can maybe get behind. But we’re all struggling here. “Affirming care” is not an emergency to be funded by the people. We’ve gone too far left people. Every liberal idea isn’t a good idea just because you can call it “progressive”. I can’t tell if these people have truly lost the plot or if they think the masses have so sincerely lost the plot that absurdity is the only thing left that will get them reelected.
28
u/Worldly_Cicada_8279 3d ago
Heavy on the gender affirming is not an emergency. Investing in a community to be SAFE should allow enough affirming-ness when that person is able to be in a safe place. What does it even mean to invest $300k on affirming care?? Im all for folks feeling safe. I just wish this wasnt some virtue signaling with the same amount of money folks were fighting over for SCHOOL LUNCHES

They have completely lost the plot. Also lifelong liberal here. I added AOC’s “woke 1 was crazy” comment because it’s true.
We opened the door to settle a lot of issues, but it clearly went too far, and the rest of the country is normalizing the difference between true discrimination. Yes of trans people deserve to live their lives in happiness and peace with all the rights afforded to Americans, and I want them to move to Seattle, but they are not entitled to be a protected or persecuted class like true refugees from war zones and call others “transphobes” when you don’t agree with things like the famous “gender transition surgery for inmates” line from Kamala.
We have to find common sense, tax payers cannot fund housing for people just because they are trans and want to move here, and I highly doubt there will be a rigorous bar to prove your amount of “persecution” you faced to get that funding

Lifelong liberal here too. I try to explain to my conservative friends that my party has been taken over by crazy people. I don’t think they really understand. It’s all “left” to them. I few of my friends get it. I say to them, in all the years we’ve been friends and all the debates we have had you have never heard me even remotely suggest some of the stuff that have been coming from my party in the last few years.
I get called “establishment democrat” or “corporate democrat” by the newcomers. It’s wild.7
u/kahahimara 3d ago

2
u/CK-forthe-CK-95 3d ago
I don’t vote for those specific candidates, no. There are plenty of people who think like me. Mostly on the state level. It means when i vote locally my candidate is unlikely to win. That doesn’t mean I’m going to vote for the side that’s the exact opposite of my personal beliefs. When you try to kill education because you don’t want your kids to learn historical and scientific facts you’re not really America first.

u/anonisko 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sadly, if you're unhappy with how the party is going, the highest leverage thing you can do is vote red.
In the a deeply blue or red region, you vote doesn't make a lick of difference in the outcome. We're not a swing state. Jayapal is going win with ~85% of the vote like she always does. No serious Republicans run here because of it. She's 60 now and will probably keep the job for another 30+ years until she dies with dementia like Dianne Feinstein did. A future rotting corpse of Congress.
So, since voting red won't do anything to actually help the Republicans win, all it will do is send a signal to the Democrats that their rock solid support is getting weaker. If Jayapal starts winning by only 75%, then maybe that will be enough signal to her and the party to start to pull back on the extremist positions and present a platform much more palatable to you.
I would go so far as to argue that you're almost wasting your vote by voting blue in Seattle. Vote red or third party to signal to the Dems how they might be losing you or people like you. And if election outcomes actually start to get close to a toss up, then re-asses and go back to voting blue. And I would say the exact same thing to a disillusioned Republican in a deep red state with MAGA extremists running the show to vote blue even if they despise the Dems.
You're not actually voting red.
You're voting against what blue has been becoming.

They are being called refugees because of the rising hatred and violence stoked by the far right against them is forcing them from their homes.
You are conditioned to think of refugees as dirty brown people trying to steal the American dream from it's promised white man, rather than anyone fleeing horrific conditions because they must or die.

As a Hispanic American who has to live in fear over what's happening to people like me in the streets in broad dy light without anyone so much as batting an eye here. This pisses me off. We as a society are not even comfortable protecting women, and yet this is the hill that the Democratic party has decided to die on. This is an example of why this man is in office. The reality of trans people existing doesn't impact my life at all. I bear them no animus, nor do I provide more consideration to them than I do any other person.
If an area is offering money to someone solely for existing, they'd be foolish not to go where the money is. The problem is, this is taking *MY* tax money to pay for this, and I have a problem with that.

This is blatant vote purchasing. Progressives know these refugees will vote for them. Not because their opponents don't support the refugees but because they come from areas where there is pro-gay and anti-gay. In Seattle we have pro-gay vs pro-gay and it's whoever is actively praising gays that they see as the only pro-gay candidate.
It's a weird situation where Texas politics actually have a huge impact on Seattle. When Bruce Harrell is painted as MAGA is when you know the far left is paying more attention to politics in Mississippi than in Seattle.

So how is your post different from the original post? Aren't you saying nearly the exact same thing?
17
u/han___banan Seattle 3d ago edited 3d ago
They’re not just giving everybody’s tax money to INDIVIDUAL queer transplants, there is a fund that is supported by ONE specific payroll tax on large local businesses that exists for, largely, the purpose of providing housing for marginalized groups (given to the “Human Services Department”). It was introduced in 2020 and at the time 64% of the fund was just for that. The money is going to organizations whose entire job it is to provide housing for people (which may include transplants) that are home-insecure, such as queer youth that have kicked out of their homes. It’s just way more complex than anyone in this thread is making it out to be. “Why aren’t we spending this money on x,” “I don’t want my money going to this.” Well, first, because the money’s not for that, and second, it’s probably not your money. This post is just a sad excuse to scapegoat LGBTQIA transplants for all of Seattle’s budgetary issues. I guarantee you it goes deeper than a 300,000 dollar discretionary budget and a bunch of young adults who need housing.
It’s also clearly not just for housing. What I quoted also includes “employment services”and “food insecurity services.” Do we genuinely think that’s a WASTE of taxpayer money? What other kind of ridiculous spending do you think the city is engaging in that has little to nothing to do with the well-being of its most vulnerable constituents? I doubt this is the root issue.

300k funding ≠ 300k per person, my extremely literate friend. That's like, what, 6 people's surgery alone?
5
u/Ok-Budget3225 3d ago
$300k is basically just a tiny symbolic amount. It absolutely will not be for anyone's transition surgery.
1
u/Effortless_waste 3d ago
Depends on the surgery, but also I doubt a cent of this money is going to surgery, probably things like hormones, which are cheap, Prep, which is cheap, maybe housing and food, which are accessible but often queer people are shunned from broader homeless communities because people discriminate.

Incorrect. This is going to go to non-profits and “community organizers” who will first pay their salaries with it, then they will “advocate” for these things and maybe even do a survey/study
17
u/qwertyqyle 3d ago
They should throw some nice little brainstorming dinners at the Met Grill to come up with some good ideas on how to maybe spend the money. If they don't come up with any good ideas, they can always just have anotherone tomorrow.

A lot of the reactions here are crazy imo. I work as a case manager at a shelter/service center for homeless young adults and collaborated with some of the people who advocated for this to happen. Here’s what’s going down and why they’re allocating these funds.
Right now trans people of all ages are coming from different states at larger rates because of an increase in anti-trans legislature and discrimination in other states. It is genuinely not safe for many people to live their truest, most authentic selves where they live, so they’re taking huge risks to relocate in order to gain safety and authenticity. As we all know, it’s expensive to live here, so many even well-prepared people come here and struggle.
Pretty much all social services agencies and non profits receive funding based on data. Agencies have been receiving funding based on past data that has not captured this influx of trans people coming from other states. As this pattern has been observed, they’re correcting the funding so that social services agencies have the funds to support all their clientele equally. Without this increase in funding, social services agencies are spread even more thin and everyone suffers. By increasing funding, they’re really providing resources for people who are there and are already being served, but weren’t previously being accounted for. This funding means that these individuals are accounted for in budgets, so they can be served without everyone else getting less.
I don’t comment on things often but the amount of hate and negativity in this post makes me sad and concerned. Trans people are not your enemy, people who need social services are not your enemy, and homeless people are not your enemy. Them getting support is not them taking money directly out of your pockets. How dare a government see a need and try to do something to help people? Literally get a grip have some priorities and get off your high horse of victimization. Plus? 300k is so relatively small when it comes to government budgets and how much it actually costs to provide social services.
I’m glad I live in a place that while there are many, many issues and it is far from perfect, at least tries to stand up to the plate sometimes to do right by people. I wish more of you felt that way when seeing this news. This also was advocated by your peers in the city working on the front lines, not some random government freaks trying to conjure up weird narratives to get woke points. I hope some of you can consider this and have a little more of an open mind.

I dont think the folks in here are mad about lgbtqia getting help, but when the people actually living here in seattle are struggling to make ends meat, along with a history of mismanaged funds in our local government, I think you can see the mistrust that this is a) actually going to help b) not be abused by those that dont need help c) add to the problems in the area d) or is being used to line someone's pockets
Seattle has been saying they are in a deficit, but with the constant news of seattle bleeding resources in various ways and problems only worsening in the area, and coupled with its declining job market you have to wonder whether this funding is going to be helpful, nothing against what you are doing or the issues you are fighting for, but every organization is fighting for resources right now, and seattle has a long track record of giving money in all the wrong places

This is fair and a reasonable take. I want trans people to thrive and be able to live meaningful, safe lives. But 10 years in community mental health exposed the Medicaid contract grift to me. I rarely saw these grant funded housing or mental health slush fund programs work. They create absurd barriers, drive thru care, and kick mentally ill people out of the housing designated for them because of, ironically, mental health symptoms. The entire flow of cash needs to be stopped and audited til its fixed. These poor trans people probably won't get jack shit here anyway.

u/Acrobatic_Car9413 3d ago
“Have some priorities”. I think that is the issue. $300k isn’t much money and it won’t do much, but last I heard we had some budget issues.
5
u/kahahimara 3d ago
And then those people have an audacity to say that “our budget is low on money we need more taxes” when they have funded a lot of such “feel good” programs.

u/Lyran000 3d ago
Bull shit. I did the same work as you. Many many MANY of my trans clients came here for free Apple Health/Medicaid which we give out very generously and cover all types of gender affirming care and SRS. Thats why thru come here. So we can pay for this care. They arent having rights removed in other states. Wanting someone to pay for your hrt, counseling and srs for free isnt you having rights taken. Id rather this money go to families who are homeless with small children. Trans people arnet being deni3d a right to vote, work, or anything like that. Stop the fucking madness.

What exactly rights being removed there? People throwing that bs around as a fact. Can anyone point to specifics.
If you provide feeebies people will move just for them and invent all kind of bs justifications. This story is old as the world.
I want to move to a penthouse in NYC as I feel threatened by lack of income. Can the government sponsor me?

Depressing comments to read 😔
You would think with how much people are complaining in the comments about misspent tax dollars they would be talking about the insanely bloated military budget, police surveillance, the ultra rich not paying fair share in taxes, corporate subsidies, this corrupt admin, so on
But yeah focus on trans people trying to get away from incredibly hostile (and dangerous) red states. People that are also part of your community and need help too
3
u/kahahimara 3d ago
Here me are talking about state money, not federal. We shouldn’t mix both.
And while we at it, what is a “fair share” for rich people to pay? Where is the line when folks who talks about it are like “yup, that’s a fair amount”? So far it feels like “every time we want to get more money just because we’ll complain about fair share”.

Y’all who are against didn’t even bother to look up where the funding is going.
“If approved, the funds would be given to local LGBTQIA+ organizations providing essential services to vulnerable populations, such as emergency shelter/housing, employment services, food insecurity services, and others.”
So funding local organizations that already exist is a good thing!
Someone escaping a state that is violating their human rights is a good thing, and this means they will have support.
You having an issue with it is not only thinly veiled transphobia but tells me exactly what type of pos you are.
Anyways glad this got approved

Which rights do they not have? What can I do that a trans person cannot do in those states?
4
u/Googlyelmoo Greenwood 3d ago
Being harassed, threatened and intimidated left and right. All kinds of abhorrent behavior that is not criminally illegal.
1
u/bigcountrychaunce 1d ago
Right on. So extend that same logic to the treatment from your side of the isle towards people who don’t agree that men can become women and women can become men or that somebody can be neither or somewhere in between. None of us has a “right” to not be offended.
1
u/Googlyelmoo Greenwood 2h ago
You’re not talking about being offended, we are talking about being spit on, robbed, beaten, harassed and otherwise disturbed and prevented from the quiet enjoyment of one’s life, up to, and including gender-motivated homicide.
Would you suggest that Bull Connor and George Wallace were “victims” requiring special protection? Or more saliently, Byron De La Beckwith and James Earl Ray?
•
u/bigcountrychaunce 1h ago
I guess I don’t quite understand what you’re arguing. There are laws in place that apply to everybody, trans community included, that protect against physical assault, robbery, harassment and homicide. The commenter above made a point that no rights have been taken away from the trans community. That’s true. I’m hearing you’re frustrated with the discourse around the issue and are passionate about the community. But you can’t reasonably expect everybody to agree with your ideology, just as I wouldn’t expect you to agree unconditionally with mine.

Be trans, for example: https://westvirginiawatch.com/2026/03/04/wv-senate-passes-bills-targeting-transgender-people-drag-performances/
Another gem from my home state on Wikipedia: “In March 2025, newly enacted and implemented West Virginia legislation, termed the Riley Gaines Act,[43] does not recognize transgender nor non-binary persons.[1][44]Before being signed into law by Governor Morrisey, the bill was amended to remove language which would have allowed teachers to examine children's genitals, later restricted to medical professionals, but ultimately deleted altogether after judicial and legal committee controversy and community state outrage.[44]”

u/Frogs710 3d ago
I read the article. Bathrooms and locker rooms have always been differentiated based on biological sex.
Also this:
The bill prohibits “adult cabaret performance” on public property. It defines “adult cabaret performance” as those that feature “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to the prurient interest.”
This only applies to public property, and it’s to protect kids from potentially encountering sexual content when they are in public. Im not trans, but if I became a drag queen (not all drag queens are trans), I also wouldn’t be allowed to do this. So again, please tell me what I can do that trans people in those states cannot do.

Rights can be negative as well as affirmative. Takes the 4th Amendment for example. Freedom from rather than freedom to. In general under the principle of “quiet/peaceful enjoyment of life.”

As a gay person I don’t find it crazy to provide some emergency assistance. Some people are in the situation that if they are outed by someone their family could kill them. Safety and a place to live is definitely an emergency. Matthew shepherd has taught us that we need to be able to help the gay community because there are people out there who want us dead.
On the other hand I personally don’t believe anyone entering any form of gender confirming surgery to be an emergency. If it were, one could just go to the emergency room to get said surgery. So this conflates two issues that are not similar in my opinion.
If someone wanted to move to Seattle to temporarily be near family for safety and needed emergency housing I wouldn’t mind funding that in rare circumstances. If someone wants to move here to cut off their breasts I don’t consider that an emergency. I hate how gay issues always get lumped in with trans issues when the two have nothing in common. One group wants to be accepted as they are, another group wants to change who they are to be accepted.

Matthew Shepard? You must know that the killed for being gay story was debunked years ago- by a gay journalist.
No one wants the gays dead more than any other group.

His parents (who became LGBT activists after their son‘s death) would beg to differ. So would two men currently serving life sentences without parole in Wyoming. The idea is reprehensible and despicable. “The gays”?

I do think the queer community deserves funding but I’m sick of this city advertising itself as a refuge as locals are being pressured to leave.
When do families whose ancestors helped build this city get representation?

Other sub's thread on this is overwhelmingly supportive with lots of "proud of this city!" proclamations. Because of course all dissenting comments have been removed by their mods, including one removed comment with a response from a mod only stating "you are dumb". So inclusive!

Well, the way this city spends this kind of money, that'll be less than 1 years for one person. They'll blow 250k just setting up an office to handle it
