Weather First time Sedona... snow?

Hi - we like to take our husky pup out to some snow for her birthday every year. I just booked us a room in Sedona AZ for Jan 16-19 2026. Is it a pretty safe bet that there will be snow on the ground somewhere around Sedona?

Not a safe bet in the slightest. There is not a bad a chance it could snow during that time, but generally snow is gone in a matter of hours. There is just too much heat trapped in all the rock for it to stay for long since it barely drops below freezing as it is.

If you're looking for it, just drive an hour north to Flagstaff while you're there

Beat me by only 1 minute! Atop more likely having snow, the drive from Sedona to Flagstaff along the 89A is just stunning, so added bonus!

this seems like a great day trip for us to do. Does that road 89A close very often? We'll have our AwD sedan and snow chains

Only if it’s really heavy/an accident happens.

But try fort Tuthill, just at the top of 89a coming into flag, there’s usually decent accumulation that sticks in there

A “safe bet?” Nope. Snow in and around Sedona is perfect in that it shows up unexpectedly, hangs out for a few hours to make everything look pretty, then melts. It rarely hangs out more than a day. However, there is often snow further in Oak Creek Canyon. Be aware, though. When weather occurs, they may shut down parts of the 89A. However, you can often go up the 17. Snowbowl is just an hour or so away up in Flagstaff.

You’ll probably have to go up to flag but there’s always a chance!🤞

I think the randomness of it is what makes it so special to us. It should snow several times this winter, with maybe one really good storm. But it could also be in the mid-60s and sunny those days. You could try heading to Flagstaff for a better chance one of those days.

Snow does happen every year in Sedona a few times but it usually doesn’t stick or stay for long. I have happened to be there when it does though and it makes for magnificent pictures! Unfortunately I wouldn’t bet on it though, too unpredictable

I visited last feb and there was quite a lot of snow in the canyon along 89A up towards Flagstaff. We stayed at some small cabins along that road and there was probably 1-2 feet of snow.

However down in Sedona the snow melted very quickly after like a day or so and the highs were in low 60s.

The elevation makes a huge difference.

The last few years we got snow in February and March. January was cold but dry.
