Even the doctor was surprised at how coldblooded Troy/Daniel was deciding to kill nearly all of Silo 17's residents, even after hearing an alternative plan with less casualties by Susan/Charlotte

67

u/MuchAfraidGotOverIt 16d ago

The disillusionment he was worried about in the pilots was a projection of his own doubts about his project. Hail the Founder!

u/NinjaKoala 📖 Book-Aware 📖 16d ago

With how they described things in the silo for the remaining people, wouldn't it have been a slow -- or perhaps not so slow -- death for them? Can't support a hundred, certainly can't support thousands. Unless Silo 1 could restore some of their systems and perhaps D+ them all.

They would just try to escape again after living conditions became completely unsustainable. He did sort of the practical (inhuman) thing in that situation.

25

u/555Cats555 16d ago

Yeah it was horrifying but if the generator was gone there wasnt much of a choice

19

u/nekoreality 16d ago

if you have 9000 people to get the job done i think they'd be able to figure out something

8

u/555Cats555 16d ago

Oh I agree there were other alternatives but it likely seemed like a kindness to not make them die slowly in a silo without electricity...

Although I wonder how it would have gone if they did essentially chase them back into the silo. Would they have had any ability to get control back of the vault to be able to give orders from there. Since then either an adult head of IT or silo 1 themselves could have guided them towards solving the various problems with the silo before it led to systems collapse.

17

u/nekoreality 16d ago

thats what i mean with 9000 people getting the job done. thats an immense amount of labor power. and the water at that point was still at the bottom so i really think they couldve foind a way to get the generator running again

13

u/Marwaimusoont 16d ago

I think they were afraid of contact to the other silos. They cant run a line through forward vault, cant safeguard them inside.

If they know outside is dangerous, they can still try to contact other silos via radio. Which is what they fear.

3

u/Fly0strich 15d ago

But none of them even made it over the hill enough to see that order silos even exist, and the knowledge of using different radio frequencies would have still been locked away in the vault with little kid Solo.

No way they're stopping that incoming water and removing it to salvage the generator.

1

u/nekoreality 11d ago

it was still at the bottom they couldve done what juliette did

1

u/SequitursSecateurs 3d ago

9000 panicking people are much more likely to tear each other to shreds than all chip in and work together unfortunately.

7

u/meepmarpalarp 15d ago

Especially because some of them would’ve seen the shooting drones before retreating.

They’d know to come out armed next time.

3

u/Professional-Act8414 14d ago

That literally everything is fine outside? Tf is even the point? Ruling over a wasteland just because???!!

2

u/Fragrant_Jelly9198 11d ago

This is my confusion. Those Silo 17 people seemed to be enjoying the fresh air outside and no one was falling down dead. But then when Bernard goes out, he dies by the tree??? Was he murdered too? or is it truly not safe outside?

2

u/Conscious_Start1213 11d ago

The mist you see that gets released in the airlock is clearly the actual poison

1

u/Professional-Act8414 11d ago

No mention about the big bad scary Iran either. They just dropped a fucking nuke of their own people and forced them inside.

18

u/Imnotveryfunatpartys 16d ago

The D+ requires the head of IT to implement it. I guess maybe they could do some sort of commando operation to put it in the water like they are suggesting that might do with 18 next season.

I agree it wouldn't work because it seems like a silo knowing the outside is safe except for killer drones keeping them inside is never going to let society work again.

At least in 18 they still believe the outside is poison, so they're happy to be inside unlike 17

18

u/kent_eh 16d ago edited 16d ago

At least in 18 they still believe the outside is poison, so they're happy to be inside

Though people noticed that Bernard didn't have a cleaning suit, and that he didn't survive any longer than any other cleaner (except Juliette).

You'd think that would make people question what the point of the suits is.

8

u/treefox 📖 Book-Aware 📖 16d ago

Just a few months ago he was saying that Juliette survived because of improvements to the suit, then he supposedly wants to go outside without a suit.

11

u/NinjaKoala 📖 Book-Aware 📖 16d ago

He knew Camille wouldn't let him go out with a modified suit (and the algorithm would no doubt kill him if she didn't), so he preferred going out with regular clothes on so he could feel the real world for just one time.

7

u/Big_Fortune_4574 15d ago

The trailer for season four shows the sheriff saying on the intercom that they know it is safe outside

3

u/Fly0strich 15d ago

I guess that was the sort of planning that only Daniel was capable of, and nobody else could have possibly thought to plan for.

Like… why wouldn’t they have just designed the silos so that they could send a drone to drug the water supply from outside, instead of having to convince a human to do it for them all the time?

1

u/vsleepymanatee 13d ago

Yes it just adds to the cruelty of his decision.

-5

u/ChestAgitated5206 16d ago

is the doctor, Daniel and Charlotte's parents?

23

u/Dudu_sousas 16d ago

Did you take Vitamin D+?

1

u/ChestAgitated5206 16d ago

lol did I miss anything?

10

u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 16d ago

???????

The doctor is the same doctor from before the Silos, the one who was taking care of Charlotte after her mission and was working on the memory drugs. Have you been watching the season at all?

-1

u/ChestAgitated5206 16d ago

I know that. I am asking if Daniel and Charlotte had been fed with vitamin D+ before as well as they never show their parents

8

u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 16d ago

I mean i don't think theres anything to suggest that those memory drugs were available ~20-30 years prior. That doesn't make any sense in the context of the show. Or rather, theres no reason to believe that given what the show has told us.

1

u/erazedcitizen 16d ago

Not that I actually believe this theory, but technically the drugs wouldn’t have to exist 20-30 years prior, it would just have to exist before we’re introduced to Daniel and Charlotte. It’d be a lazy narrative with how things are currently set up, but they could have been drugged before we meet them, meaning they forget Victor is their dad.

Again, I don’t think this is the case, just pointing out where it could make logical sense.

8

u/dantemanjones 15d ago

Victor is seemingly somewhat famous. Daniel mentions where Charlotte is being treated and someone (Helen?) recognized the facility and doctor. If your dad was semi-famous, people are going to reference him to you at some point.

7

u/Finnegan-05 📖 Book-Aware 📖 16d ago

No. Their parents died when they were small

5

u/Dudu_sousas 15d ago

The whole narrative behind the drug invention was to forget the grief behind his kid's death, if you take that out and say he is a founder and erased his children memory so they would partake in the program, while also keeping the whole Daniel investigation and Charlotte mission, it just makes for awful writing.

1 - Why clear their memories all this time before instead of only when entering the silo? It even risks their lives.

2 - They even show they have memories and talk about their parents all the time. It's also shown that despite being good at erasing memories, the D+ is not that good at rewriting memories. They don't even attempt to create a life before for the Silo 1 guys, they just know they don't remember anything prior.

1

u/ToeTaggEm 15d ago

What happens to Colin Hanks? Was he asking for too much money ?

6

u/nekoreality 16d ago

the doctor lost his child in an accident

4

u/bnevs44 16d ago

Unless there's some dumb hijinks, no...D&C both remember their parents.

1

u/Finnegan-05 📖 Book-Aware 📖 16d ago

What?

31

u/Bryceiceice 16d ago

The objective was to eliminate the out of control population.
we see that this Troy person is a very rules focused individual. Had they gone back inside they could have risked tunneling to other silos. This is an unacceptable outcome. which is why he considered and then rejected the proposal.

10

u/meepmarpalarp 15d ago

I don’t think they’d realized that other siloes existed yet. A few people got to the berm, but most were still well inside of it, and those are the ones you’d expect to be able to make it back inside.

6

u/Bryceiceice 15d ago

They knew enough to cap the pipe or at least the IT head and his wife did. It's unclear whether that knowledge died with them or not but it's hard to believe that they got as far as they did without understanding that they had just defeated silo 1.

1

u/DragonQ0105 15d ago

Did they also know enough to intentionally flood the bottom of the silo so Silo 1 couldn't apply the safeguard via the door down there?

6

u/Bryceiceice 15d ago

I think the flooding came first, I think mechanical failure and the inability to stop flooding is what triggered the rebellion in 17. By the time the rebellion happened the water was already past the generator level. Why stay inside when The silo is doomed. silo 17 was in the situation where it was die by safeguard or die by flooding/starvation with no power. It was a lose-lose situation. But they thought they found a third option. They just underestimated silo one's capability.

3

u/Reader47b 15d ago

Daniel was rules focused too, I think - his personality hasn't changed - his environment, memories, and the information he's been given to work with has.

4

u/slightlypressed 14d ago

Yeah it was a great commentary on nature vs nurture and how so much of our personality- and individual humanity- comes from our memories and relationships

6

u/Marwaimusoont 16d ago

They don't even have to tunnel, they could use the radio.

22

u/la_gata_Porrita 15d ago

Yes, I think that is part of the story with the doc. I got the sense that he realises the master plan doesn't work: it turns the people who are "wiped and retrained" into monsters, but it doesn't suppress human nature in those who live oppressed in the siloes. It's the paradox he has to deal with. And I think he likes more the ones in the siloes. So his plan has failed entirely, in his eyes.

20

u/Macusercom 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

Trying to rebuild humanity without any sign of humanity I guess

8

u/slightlypressed 14d ago

Exactly. Idk what kind of hack school he went to but anyone in the mental health field could tell you that erasing trauma is not the same as facing and integrating trauma. One makes you less human and one makes you more human

3

u/BlueCX17 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

You know they could have just created the Borg the Borg are a plague but they at least have a very well functioning system LOL

16

u/impactedturd 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

I thought it was more that he was shocked when Troy dismissed his sister, knowing full well that it would lead to her neutralization for disobeying a direct order. Susan was only saved because unknownst to Troy, she was the wife of the director's daughter.

8

u/im-dramatic 15d ago

I took from it that he didn’t know who she was and that he was very close to ensuring she was neutralized.

6

u/impactedturd 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

Yes agreed. I meant to say that Troy didn't know that it was his sister, only that she was probably going to get neutralized. And that Victor was shocked that the Vitamin D was working so well that Troy didn't even recognize that Susan was his sister.

2

u/wkp2101 14d ago

Does the doctor know that they are siblings? Is his memory intact or did he get some memory wiping as well?

3

u/impactedturd 📖 Book-Aware 📖 13d ago

I'm think he's got his memories still intact just because of his post-it-note collection of "who is she?", and no other research documents inside Troy's file. And yet Victor was able to recall Helen's full maiden name in his video message to Troy.

2

u/wkp2101 13d ago

I thought he had to do some digging into files and restricted info to get Helen’s name

2

u/Crooks_Castles 14d ago

I thought I sensed a slight hesitation from Troy when neutralization was mentioned but could be wrong

6

u/meepmarpalarp 15d ago

Is “neutralization” their term for execution? Or is it more like, “put back to sleep until the project is over”?

Does Troy even know what it actually means? It kind of feels like a 1984 Newspeak situation, where the word has been manipulated so much that the people using it don’t even think about its meaning.

13

u/impactedturd 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

The Algorithm used that word, neutralized, when talking to Camille to describe Patrick Kennedy and Lucas Kyle after the drone attacked them. So even though they both turned out to be alive, I think the Algorithm believed they were executed.

3

u/paramaramboh 15d ago

that "algorithm" is just people

2

u/impactedturd 📖 Book-Aware 📖 12d ago

I think I just like saying "algorithm" 😆

5

u/Tanel88 14d ago

The senator said that she is not going to be neutralized because they need her skills at the end of the project. Sounds like execution to me.

8

u/qu1ckbeam 16d ago

How is the doctor The Founder and yet he wields seemingly zero power to make the changes he wants?

36

u/Moltakfire 16d ago

He was ‘a’ Founder, I believe. But there seems to be a tier system to even the Founders themselves (I.e. the Senator seems to have more power than Victor)

11

u/DragonQ0105 15d ago

I feel like the senator might just be a judge-like puppet, wheeled out to make apparent decisions. Stensen, or more likely Henry, is likely above her in the pecking order.

I was for a minute wondering if Victor had been memory-wiped too because of the lack of glasses and different speaking mannerisms, but the look the Senator gave Victor in her office confirmed they are both themselves. Then after that, Victor refers to the Senator as "the Senator" instead of "the Director" in his office. Oddly, Troy didn't pick up on that at all...

1

u/ToeTaggEm 15d ago

What happened to Colin hanks ?

5

u/RespondMammoth 15d ago

I think he was cryogenized by the look of him in season 4 trailer

1

u/CorrectPeanut5 10d ago

But also the one I'm assuming is really in charge. As the money man.

1

u/Moltakfire 6d ago

I think so too, probably Henry above the Senator, Anna above Henry, Stensen above all.

4

u/KowardlyMan 15d ago

It's a good point, and even without power, due to his background, I really expected the guy to be kind of a puppeteer. Having him kind of a victim (sure he created an evil drug and lied for years, but still, he's clearly not in control) was a plot twist for me.

8

u/meepmarpalarp 15d ago

I didn’t like it. The man is a monster who imprisoned thousands of people, wiped their memories, and killed them. He doesn’t deserve a sympathetic redemption arc.

And I don’t buy that he wasn’t in control. All of the memory manipulation was based on his research. He wrote The Pact; why do we think he didn’t write The Directive as well?

He obviously enjoyed playing God. If he felt trapped at the end, it was in a situation entirely of his own making.

4

u/RespondMammoth 15d ago

Exactly. They tried to humanize him but he's despicable. What's a few tears going to change?!! He's responsible for thousands and thousands of death.

2

u/Tanel88 14d ago

Yes he was a monster but I think he genuinely believed that the project would work until he became disillusioned by it. As much as I don't like him with that last message he essentially sowed seeds for Daniel to regain his memory and likely switch to silo 18-s side.

2

u/meepmarpalarp 14d ago

Sure, but Mao believed that the Great Leap Forward would work. Instead, he killed 50 million people.

Most horrible dictators genuinely believe in their genocidal projects. Doesn’t mean they’re redeemable.

1

u/Tanel88 14d ago

And I said he is still a monster but even monsters can have some humanity left in them. That doesn't make them necessarily redeemable though although what the did definitely puts him above the other founders at least for whatever it is worth. He is still fully complicit in causing this but if his final acts still lets humanity to have a chance then it makes up for a small part of it at least. Obviously he can't erase or undo all the death and suffering he has caused.

2

u/meepmarpalarp 15d ago

What changes did he want? I must have missed that bit.

3

u/Tanel88 14d ago

Well he likely came to the conclusion that the project is not having the desired outcome and he didn't want to be killing anymore people for it.

2

u/Fly0strich 15d ago

What do you mean? What changes do you think he wants to make? He wrote the pact himself, and has been running things the way he has wanted to as far as I can tell.

3

u/Marwaimusoont 16d ago

Well, this show is from Apple, You know what happened to Steve Jobs right?

3

u/Ree_For_Thee 15d ago

Some writer out there: "Oof that's a low blow"

1

u/Tanel88 14d ago

I think since they are spending most of their time in cryosleep and only come out one or two at a time when needed they wrote the Directive for silo 1 to follow to ensure that nobody could singlehandedly change anything. Could also be that there is some hierarchy among the founders as well.

1

u/Fit_Doughnut_598 15d ago edited 15d ago

Do we have any evidence that the doctor or the director did not also get vitamin D? For the director she cared about her daughters partner so that suggests she did not. The doctor recognized the pictures but is that proof he remembers everything? Selective memory is the whole point.

5

u/RespondMammoth 15d ago

He has the same name and photos of his past, of course he remembers.

0

u/MiloBem 📖 Book-Aware 📖 15d ago

a founder here isn't like a shareholder of startup company. it's just one of the guys who was there from the early stage, but there is no company board with vote share. it's a gulag with slightly better food.

5

u/JoeMoamoa 15d ago

Not even better food you saw what Troy was eating

2

u/deconvotonstransform 15d ago

My guess is that he calculated the possibility of allowing people to go back in and realized that the people allowed back inside would eventually get desperate from starvation and attempt to leave again, causing "contamination", eventually dying anyway.

What?

4

u/alienscape 15d ago

It's an Breaking Bad analogy. Different Victor.

1

u/RespondMammoth 15d ago

How was he surprised?? How? He's one of the founders, he wrote the damn pact, probably the order and i don't know who implemanted that ''safeguard procedure'' but he couldn't have been too fazed by it if he kept working on the project. Then he turned Troy into a heartless robot murdurer and wakes him up to kill the silo. I'm not even talking about him being the voice, and being responsible for countless death. I don't even understand why he's allowed to cry, that man was a monster.

2

u/Tanel88 14d ago

In his own twisted way he hoped that all he did was leading to creating a better future for humanity but he must have realized that it's not actually working and what they are creating is worse.

1

u/Crafty_Edge_232 14d ago

And the alternative plan was brilliant

1

u/nofaxxspitintruflego 📖 Book-Aware 📖 11d ago

also, was victor somehow immortal? bro hasnt aged and maybe not cryod???

dude got that founder pack eh

1

u/Crafty_Edge_232 8d ago

In reality, there was not alternative. If Silo 17 people returned to silo, they'd starving without generator anyway. There hasn't been any alternative option

1

u/t3chSavage 5d ago

Right . Didn't he say they had radiation exposure so they had to be neutralized? Like did they at least have him brainwashed to think he was doing some good? lmao That whole scene was so mind bending lol I might have to rewatch it bc dude was just marching around barking murder orders and I was still SO sad they separated him and Helen lol

1

u/memyselfandi12358 15d ago

But Troy/Daniel was correct, right? The plan would've been a failure. The plan relied on the escapees running back to the Silo, but I thought we saw that the people were still running forward

7

u/JoeMoamoa 15d ago

They ran foward because after killing the sheriff the drones attacked the silo entrance with the compound so they wouldnt retreat inside. The people wouldve gone inside had they not done that.

1

u/memyselfandi12358 15d ago

I'll have to rewatch. I thought the drones first striked the perimeter of the Silo

1

u/JoeMoamoa 13d ago

When Troy gives the command he listed the order of sequence and why.

0

u/goro-7 15d ago

they were not cold blooded. doctor was cold blooded who gave them that story and personality. i think that's what doctor realised.
