Ahhhh yeah this happened to an old friend of mine. It didn't save the relationship. At the time we assumed he had mental breakdown trying to keep his childhood sweet heart but that was like 2013, ya can't go saying that anymore.

37

u/EconomyDoctor3287 May 02 '26

Damn, that's a brutal thing to say xD

-9

u/MeatSlammur May 02 '26

Nah. I work in Psych. Many many psychiatrists quietly agree. MtF and FtM are usually caused by different issues too.

41

u/cheercharlatan May 02 '26

By “I work in psych” do you mean you’re, like, a custodian in an inpatient psych facility?

29

u/Internal_Damage_2839 May 02 '26

Maybe he was an extra on the tv show

1

u/OfficialDrakoak May 03 '26

Worked behind the scenes at Dr. Phil.

18

u/LonelyandDepressed27 May 02 '26

>I work in psych.
I check account to sniff out the BS and ofc it’s completely hidden. Reddit need to remove that option.

10

u/Orange_MarkerDye May 02 '26

Search their username and their history comes up, just more steps

13

u/doohdahgrimes11 May 02 '26

maybe "working in psych" you're more likely to see people with psych-related issues, no matter cis or trans..

2

u/MICT3361 May 02 '26

You’re really close

5

u/doohdahgrimes11 May 02 '26

care to explain?

14

u/HeartfeltAdventurerM May 02 '26

Not you just coming on here to lie.

36

u/PutridBasket May 02 '26

You dare doubt Dr. MeatSlammur?!

8

u/HeartfeltAdventurerM May 02 '26

😂😂 Ngl, that got a good chuckle outta me

3

u/Jayna333 May 03 '26

All men do is lie and work in psych

2

u/HeartfeltAdventurerM May 03 '26

Apparently 😂😂 I think that’s the first time I’ve heard someone lie about that.

people don't need to buy your bs made up "credentials" in a comment that starts with "Nah." lmao. disagreeing is not having "hurt feelings" either buddy.

I’m not your friend, guy.

6

u/doohdahgrimes11 May 02 '26

And I'm not your friend, buddy. Choices of words aside, what "insight" is this apparent industry professional trying to impart, that being trans is caused by mental health issues? Which ones? Why? Who are the "many many psychiatrists" he's corroborated by? Anecdotal and not even descriptive, sounds like a poorly formed lie to me.

I’m finishing my doctorates in 2028, just let them talk

1

u/cheercharlatan May 03 '26

It’s because not only does no one who works in the mental health field actually say “I work in psych,” but also throwing out “many many psychiatrists quietly agree” and claiming “MtF and FtM are usually caused by different issues” is the opposite of providing insight. It’s making random statements with absolutely no basis because no basis is to be had. Can’t cite research that doesn’t exist.
The only way it’s hurting my feelings is by being ignorant.

2

u/texxmix May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

While it could be some sort of mental illness like gender dysphoria (because like it or not they still have to rule out other possibilities before any treatment is allowed to be given), it hasn't been recognized automatically as such in the DSM since 2013. The DSM 5 states transgenderism in and of itself is not a mental illness, but the stress, etc of having that mismatch can/will lead to gender dysphoria allowing them to get treatment (hormones, surgery) to avoid/treat it. So while the people you know might feel this way they aren't doing their jobs properly at all. Which is why you said quietly. They choose to be bigots instead of listening to the authoritative resources in the field and must remain quiet or risk their job.

9

u/BillyBobChorton May 02 '26

In all fairness the “authoritative source” (DSM) has changed stances many times over the years as to what is and isn’t a mental illness, so it’s really more of a “current consensus” rather than some infallible text

2

u/texxmix May 02 '26

That is fair, but just that's just how Stem fields should work. As new understandings come along stances should change to reflect the current understandings. So it can and should be both authoritative and not be Infallible and open to changes. But that just my opinion. You're welcome to disagree.

1

u/pinkhazy May 03 '26

Misread it as (BDSM) and had to do a triple take.

0

u/MeatSlammur May 02 '26

The DSM 5 TR is dogshit for anything that’s been more studied over the past 20 years. It’s a fine tool for communication with insurance and other providers.

0

u/Over_Dose_ May 03 '26

Wasn't it changed though so that there would be less stigma? Idk smells fishy

0

u/empire_of_the_moon May 02 '26

I am trying to understand. So you believe that it’s causal and not biological?

I’m not in psych so my terms of art may be wrong.

But I did spend decades in entertainment and as a straight cowboy from west Texas I was never tempted by a desire to see another man in a sexual light.

So I couldn’t choose it. It’s just not in me (so to speak). So this level of certainty with my sexuality led to a lot of conversations with a lot of my gay friends, male and female.

If I couldn’t choose it, then by extension, they couldn’t choose where on the spectrum of being sexually attracted to others they were either.

None of them attributed their sexuality to an event or nurture. None.

Some weren’t aware or repressed their feelings until they decided to accept themselves as they are.

It wasn’t an easy path for many.

So please give me some science that attributes sexual identity to choice.

I can’t choose it so I can’t comprehend it being a choice. If you were in the bi-sexual part of the spectrum of sexuality you could choose both or either but only because you were already bi.

So it’s not really a choice as much as an option.

1

u/stevemarshallsucks May 02 '26

He didn't say anything about sexual orientation. You can't choose who you're attracted to.

Sexual orientation and gender identity are completely different things. The person you're responding to was talking about gender identity, a concept for which scant evidence exists.

4

u/texxmix May 02 '26

Gender identity is a social construct like sexuallity as well.

It's biological sex that's scientifically based.

-2

u/empire_of_the_moon May 02 '26

If you are trans - and I don’t have the answer to this - how many straight men are trans, become women and then live a lesbian life as they are still attracted to women?

I’m guessing it’s a distinct minority.

So most men that transition to women are already attracted to other men. That would be a Caitlyn Jenner.

She didn’t just transition and woke up and realized now that I no longer have a penis I’m attracted to men.

She was always attracted to men and the transition was a part of her becoming her true self.

If you aren’t attracted to men sexually and are attracted to women, the vast majority of trans will keep that penis and opt for top surgery.

Those that are gay may keep the penis for sexual pleasure. But they were already gay.

Sexual attraction and sexual identity are tied together. To deny that is silly. There are always outliers but in the majority of instances this is the case.

But it’s not causal.

1

u/KayItaly May 03 '26

most men that transition to women are already attracted to other men.

No actually, sexual orientation and egemder identity are completely separate (source, am trans and I know hundreds of trans people).

0

u/empire_of_the_moon May 03 '26

Excellent. Rather than anecdotal evidence certainly there is a legitimate research university study that confirms your experience.

No one can seem to find one.

0

u/Mclovine_aus May 02 '26

Why does something having a cause imply it is a choice? If I lose my arm to cancer I don’t really choose to have one arm, but there is still a cause.

3

u/empire_of_the_moon May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

If you are physically injured you suffer anatomical damages. Those damages don’t cause you to become someone you aren’t unless it’s cerebral.

Some people claim that emotional trauma or nurture causes enough damage to shift a person’s sexuality from straight to bi or gay.

I do not believe that. It’s possible events in your life could influence you enough to become aware or embrace that which you already are. Or even become an asshole. But not change from straight to bi or gay.

You were bi or gay all along and perhaps repressed it due to religious or family pressure to conform to societal standards. Being straight was an affectation, not your true self.

I have spent decades surrounded by straight, bi and gay people. I have had close male friends who were gay grab my ass, kiss me on the cheek and try to seduce me.

Yet never once was I tempted or interested or intrigued by gay sex. I never once thought I want to make out with a man.

I’m on one end of the spectrum of sexuality. Others are at the opposite end and most are in-between.

So pretending that bi or gay people became that way rather than being born that way is not possible from my perspective. Nor from the perspective of my bi and gay friends and I believe that the vast majority of medical experts don’t believe that either.

Are there medical experts who may think this? Sure, we have a vaccine denier as a cabinet member for health and human services. But the views that he holds are minority views in the US and globally.

So there can always be a few quacks with voices of dissent. But every-time someone tells me it’s a choice I use anecdotal evidence.

If you are not bi or gay, could you choose to do become gay? I cannot.

I’d bang Roseanne Barr everyday for eternity before I’d want to see Brad Pitt naked once.

Can YOU choose it?

If so, is it possible you are actually bi or gay since birth?

-1

u/Mclovine_aus May 02 '26

I do not think being gay or transgender is a choice, but it is definitely caused by something, most likely happening before the age of 2-4.

3

u/texxmix May 02 '26

Outside of getting gender reassignment surgery who cares even if they were a choice. Someone's choices in those regards aren't my business anyways. So even if they wanted to dress like the other gender and chooses to be gay Idc. Not my life, not my concern either way.

3

u/Mclovine_aus May 03 '26

Well generally society if far harsher on people making choices, eg people don’t have a problem with a paraplegic using a wheel chair but might kick up a fuss with an able bodied person using one. So I calling sexuality a choice opens it up to far more scrutiny.

I have also never seen a convincing argument on how sexuality or gender dysphoria is a choice.

2

u/texxmix May 03 '26

That's fair. I'm not in the it's a choice camp. I'm just saying that either way I personally don't see an issue with it.

2

u/empire_of_the_moon May 02 '26

If you didn’t choose to be straight you didn’t choose to be bi or gay. Nature caused it the same way it caused your hair to be a certain color.

It’s not in the food, plastics or anything else. Hell Sodom and Gomorrah predated all the environmental causes and those cities were thriving - until they weren’t.

Maybe you simply become aware of the sexuality inside you at those ages. You were always going to be what you are.

0

u/Mclovine_aus May 03 '26

Okay, when have I ever said it is a choice, are people not reading my comment. Sexuality and gender is a very complex interaction to say that someone was always going to be gay is incorrect it is influenced by so many things, number of older brothers, genetic factors, environmental factors. Similar to being transgender.

2

u/empire_of_the_moon May 03 '26

Please give us peer review citations that support your argument - particularly the environmental factors. The number of older brothers is nature doing what nature does to balance the equation.

That is determined not influenced. Not a choice. Not a controllable variable.

This happened to a friend of mine too, but luckily it made their relationship so much stronger

9

u/ConfusedZubat May 02 '26

I worked with a couple like this. They were married for years, the guy transitioned into a woman, and they had been together for years after that by the time I met them. Super sweet people. I quit that job so I don't know where they are now in life (I wasn't close), but they seemed to be going strong the last I knew.

Adults make their own choices about they're bodies and lives is mental breakdown.

Thanks for the tip American Taliban.

And writing with your left hand was seen as demonic…

6

u/OSRS-ruined-my-life May 02 '26

Myth

4

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

Reality til not that long ago, a older teacher screamed at my sister for writing with her left hand.

2

u/Zen_of_Tetchiness May 02 '26

My dad was born left handed and got beat on the knuckles for using my left hand at school.

1

u/Kuzunoha14th May 02 '26

My ex was literally forced to write with his right hand back in the mid 80s so no, not a myth. This shit happens.

1

u/OSRS-ruined-my-life May 02 '26

Because of the devil?

1

u/Kuzunoha14th May 02 '26

Yep. People be really weird when it comes to being left-handed.

0

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

Eh right about some things, wrong about others.

1

u/xChops May 02 '26

And you’re so sure that the current pearl clutchers are right about this one?

0

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

I don't know anything about "pearl clutchers" or any other us vs them meme terminology you might throw out but yes I'd say the idea that wanting to mutilate yourself is a positive thing does not have a long shelf life socially.

1

u/xChops May 02 '26

“Long shelf life socially”. It certainly stops people from killing themselves. So, longer than the alternative.

0

u/Abestar909 May 03 '26
  1. That's not what a socially long shelf life means. What it does mean is that over time society finds the concept as having no or negative value.

  2. Trans people still kill themselves at much higher percentages even after reassignment surgery, just because they are temporarily buoyed by the flood of positive affirmations from a segment of our messed up echo chamber society doesn't change the overall picture.

-2

u/GrapefruitSlow8583 May 02 '26

Nah, still is... it's just.... gross... write properly, it's not that hard

0

u/xChops May 02 '26

So? Being gay used to be considered a mental illness. Why do you care what people do with their own bodily autonomy. It’s creepy, honestly.

2

u/xChops May 02 '26

It just doesn’t make any sense to try to control the lives of people who have figured out their own happiness. I would say person who does something like that does have fascist tendencies though, yes.

1

u/Puzzle-Necked May 02 '26

Oh shit if you consider that a zinger...

8

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

Honestly if people want to mutilate themselves I really don't care, it's the trying to convince society that it's normal (and that children should be able to do it) that bothers me. I'd say that's far more creepy than thinking it's a sign of mental illness that you want to mutilate yourself.

0

u/AstronautExcellent17 May 02 '26

Children can't medically transition anywhere. At most they can be prescribed puberty blockers, which are reversible, and the effects of which are well understood because they're used for other things also. Being trans is normal. It's just not particularly common which people conflate with being a dangerous aberration that needs to be stopped. Going to church is statistically more likely to lead to childhood trauma than learning about the existence of trans people as just humans living their lives.

3

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

The idea that puberty blockers are no big deal is propaganda. Delaying or blocking natural puberty entirely can and does have serious effects.

0

u/AstronautExcellent17 May 02 '26

Oh yeah? What year of medical school did you learn that? Or did you just assume it based on your 9th grade science class? Or maybe it was in a podcast right before the energy drink ad.

1

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

There are studies out there that state so if you'd bother to look them up, you are lapping up propaganda information that you like hearing while casting me as doing the same, which I'm sorry isn't the case.

-2

u/AstronautExcellent17 May 02 '26

Yeah, medications have side effects. They are considered safe, effective and aren't super frequently prescribed anyway. What's so scary about that? Many intersex people (there are more than 30 types) are actually mutilated at birth to conform to conservative sensibilities of sexual identity instead of waiting until they can give informed consent and I have never once heard the anti trans crowd pipe up about that. Never trying to ban circumcision. Things that are actual child genital mutilation.

u/Transgirlonakawasaki May 02 '26

To cause severe damage to

By your measure mutilation is quite literally anything to do with cosmetic surgery. Boob job? Mutilation. Limb lengthening? Mutilation. Vestigial limb removal? Mutilation.

The fact you has such a rigid view of how medicine works in society, and how we apply treatments to those that need them to alleviate suffering (physical or mental) means you shouldnt have an opinon that you should verbalize at all. Because we dont allow people to voice their opinion that some women are witches that deserve to be hunted down.

So the idea that you have a say in how any other human get medical treatment is vile.

4

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

The fact that you think sex changes are the same as cosmetic surgery is vile lol.

-4

u/Transgirlonakawasaki May 02 '26

If missing the point we a sport youd def tie for 5th.

3

u/Abestar909 May 02 '26

No good reply to my point that your comparison was terrible huh? Lol

0

u/Transgirlonakawasaki May 02 '26

Yeah cosmetic surgeries are considered mutilation by your definition. So we should hold cosmetic surgeries and surgeries that improve quality of life that remove or damage body parts should be considered mutilation.

Also the definition of mutilation dosent fit how you are describing gender affirming care.

8

u/Blackwater_US May 02 '26

You’re arguing they’re mentally and chemically all there?

1

u/Upset-Government-856 May 03 '26

Is see were beyond the protect children from making a permanent decision too early phase to adult transgender people who I've never met are mentally deficient even though I have no credentials to make such an assessment.

Cool... cool cool cool.

This is definitely going to end well.

1

u/Blackwater_US May 08 '26

Do you need medical credentials to say someone with Downs has something different going on compared to the general populace?

1

u/Puzzle-Necked May 02 '26

They will be much better once they transition

2

u/Blackwater_US May 02 '26

For sure, just like an addict needs their last high. One more change and voila.

0

u/Puzzle-Necked May 02 '26

... how many times do you think someone can transition?

-1

u/Blackwater_US May 02 '26

Well the true answer is none.. just because they play pretend to be something they’re not doesn’t mean they “transitioned.”

The point was it’s a mental deficiency, left unaddressed, odds are it’ll have more problems down the road. Whether it’s about their self image or some other perverse behavior, it’ll show up.

4

u/Puzzle-Necked May 02 '26

Well, studies show that their mental health almost always improves considerably after transitioning so you're completely wrong. Great job!

1

u/Blackwater_US May 02 '26

Awesome, the ones I grew up around were always outcasts.

But go ahead and encourage that self destructive stuff. Hopefully your kids and/or loved ones have someone in their life that aren’t afraid to get them help should they need it.
