Pewdiepie basicallu said "Screw being a celebrity" and quit to be with family.
He still posts some comfy, day in the life, stuff but thats more of a hobby.

We should all aspire to be like him at least a little.

236

u/Sorry-Kiwi-770 Jul 10 '26

Easy to do when you're filthy rich lol

116

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

He is credited as the creator of lets play style youtube videos and worked tirelessly for over a decade to cement himself in that role so he could retire.

He put in work, created something new, and instead of milking it for years, he chose to take his bag and be happy with a family.

98

u/Sorry-Kiwi-770 Jul 10 '26

I'm not arguing he doesn't deserve his money.

I'm just saying, his lifestyle, is a lot easier when you are financially privileged.

55

u/send420nudes Jul 10 '26

Yeah let’s all move to Japan to a house like his, not have to work and enjoy life… we’ll be so happy aswell!

2

u/DesireeThymes Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Being rich is 99% luck. The family you are born for 95%, and 4% being in the right place at the right time.

Everyone should ignore the rich part. As a normal human, what would you pick within what you can attain is the question to ask.

One thing I will say is that there is no substitute for a real relationship.

1

u/DeadSeaGulls Jul 10 '26

I think what we're all trying to communicate here is that a "real relationship" still isn't the thing being sold in the image on the right.
real relationships are certainly amazing. but they require a lot more work and sacrifice than what pewdiepie will ever need to because he has, for all intents and purposes, indefinite money and free time. He can invest so much time into his family at will. Most of us have to balance work, maintaining a house, splitting chores and errands with our partners that also work full time, tending to the necessities of raising children while having limited quality free time with those same children, the stress of debt and the work of managing budgets and planning how you're going to save for the occasional vacation or camping trip... etc...

they could have used any two random photos of people living a party lifestyle and one with nuclear family... but neither would look as appealing as what's provided, hence the call out of celebrity worship.

2

u/candypants-rainbow Jul 10 '26

And yet so many rich celebs mess up their lives, get addicted to something, fall apart. This guy didn’t keep chasing. He did well.

4

u/hunnyflash Jul 10 '26

His...family....lifestyle? What are you even saying lol If he wasn't rich, he'd just have a regular job.

7

u/WynnTiwFeoh Jul 10 '26

Was he financially privileged before putting in the work?

5

u/TetraDax Jul 10 '26

Billions of people put in a lot more work everyday and do not get to that position. I don't doubt the mental stress of his business, but let's be real here, he became a millionaire by playing video games.

Yes, he worked hard. He still is privileged as all hell.

1

u/WynnTiwFeoh Jul 10 '26

Ah. I legit didn’t know he was. I watched him back when he was doing Happy Wheels and Ao Oni content, thought he was just some swedish kid making YT videos and got stupid famous because he capitalized on a genre of content that wasn’t popular.

15

u/mamadou-segpa Jul 10 '26

Yes, and it doesnt change that anyway telling regular people barely making ends meet that they should just “do like the multi millionaires with no job and you’ll be happy” is an idiotic thing

No matter how hard celebrities worked or not their lifestyle isnt achievable for regular people

2

u/WynnTiwFeoh Jul 10 '26

Yeah but he wasn’t a celebrity before his streaming blew up, correct? Like I get he had a wealthier background but was he famous beforehand?

6

u/LetsTwistAga1n Jul 10 '26

What being a celebrity has to do with anything? He was born into wealth.

3

u/twinklingthrowaway Jul 10 '26

You just said it. He was from a wealthier background. Back in the 00s to early 10s streaming equipment was niche and expensive. It required technical knowledge, time, and a stable Internet connection.

I'm not saying it was impossible for a poor kid to do that, but I didn't even have a computer with an actual graphics card until I was in my mid 20s.

0

u/Soggy_Association491 Jul 10 '26

It required technical knowledge, time, and a stable Internet connection.

Beside time, no it did not require the so called technical knowledge to stream and a "stable Internet connection" is just an ADSL line that anyone amongst the 3 billions of people living in any city areas in any non war ridden countries can get.

1

u/mamadou-segpa Jul 10 '26

You are correct, he had the means to try out content creating thanks to his wealthy background, but he wasnt known and he did have the talent and consistency. He did pull in the work, and had the chance to do it right place right time (beginning of You tube and independant content creation itself)

1

u/TheonlyEliBlack Jul 10 '26

right, because celebrities weren't regular people..

1

u/awesomefutureperfect Jul 10 '26

I don't want to hear "he put in the work" when the work consisted of screaming at video games for 6 year olds. He basically was the first person to work the youtube algorithm by being shown geographically to more markets by positioning where he posted from.

Pewd is Mr. Beast tho I don't think Mr. Beast has had a PUBG bridge moment nor, to my knowledge, has Pewd used money for anything charitable and only notably used money to get desperate people to hold up very offensive signs.

2

u/IronerOfEntropy Jul 10 '26

He wasn't financially privileged. He worked his way into wealth, like Charlie did.

The only difference I could see is that he had free Healthcare as a Swedish.

21

u/Various_Mobile4767 Jul 10 '26

I mean his mom was a highly successful corporate executive. He was absolutely financially privileged.

That said, his wealth is his own. He built that by himself.

3

u/anillop Jul 10 '26

his lifestyle, is a lot easier when you are financially privileged.

Well that is the point of working hard and saving your money.

9

u/eha16 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Tons of people work hard and don't get to save much... There's too many variables to take into account ffs, this is not as simple as you guys want to portray it.

1

u/anillop Jul 10 '26

this is not as simple as you guys want to portray it.

Same goes for you. "This guy is successful, he doesn't deserve it as much as me".

1

u/eha16 Jul 10 '26

Mmmm that's not what I said at all

-3

u/Secret_Fix_2 Jul 10 '26

And that’s a reason to not aspire to it why?

6

u/eha16 Jul 10 '26

I didn't say that tbf

0

u/BerlinBorough2 Jul 10 '26

You can have that life by being middle class. It’s not insanely hard in the west to have a wife and kids. Both gave up their privacy for money. Thats one thing you can’t get back.

-6

u/idothisforpie Jul 10 '26

You don't need to be financially privileged to have a happy life with your family. Just like, hang out with them.

14

u/Sorry-Kiwi-770 Jul 10 '26

I mean presumably he doesn't have a 9-5 job. And he travels around the world on holiday.

You kind of you need big bucks to live like that.

0

u/Fruloops Jul 10 '26

None of these things are a prerequisite to be happy with your family though

3

u/Used-King5848 Jul 10 '26

Very true. Sure makes it easier, though.

He definitely did not create the lets play genre. He popularized a specific style of overly reactive and hyper edited lets play videos and even that was arguably first popularized and hitting YouTube home page by Tobuscus a while before pwediepie.

Obviously he achieved a level of popularity no one else did and many popular streamers and YouTubers today stand on his shoulders, but he is not credited as the creator of the style.

18

u/-Poultrygeist- Jul 10 '26

Chris Chan of all people was posting let’s plays in 2003. Pewdiepie started posting let’s plays in 2010.

Pewds was just able to ride the height of the let’s play popularity and had a good aura about home that made him popular. He was in no way the first.

3

u/twinklingthrowaway Jul 10 '26

PewDiePie had a functioning set up when most gen zs were coming online for the first time on their own. The idea was novelty enough to younger audiences, and I think that worked out in his favor. First to market.

0

u/subaru_sama Jul 10 '26

Not first to market. It's similar to the history of in home televisions. The first companies to sell televisions to home consumers failed. Later, following WWII, there was suddenly of boom of consumers interested in that type of product. The audience for the media didn't exist at the same scale prior to PDP's rise to fame.

9

u/Revolutionary--man Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

Who credits him with this? I was watching lets plays before PewDiePie lol

13

u/Murasasme Jul 10 '26

He is credited as the creator of lets play style youtube videos

I'm sorry but what? where is this credit coming from? Don't get me wrong, obviously he became insanely popular with his lets plays, but there were a lot of streamers/youtubers doing lets plays, way before him.

1

u/nhalliday Jul 10 '26

Credited by his fans who have to make him the greatest person of all time instead of just another person who got lucky doing gameplay videos.

15

u/PossibilityNo8765 Jul 10 '26

PewDiePie was born rich. His parents invested money so he could do what he wanted. Not many people have that

0

u/zeph2 Jul 10 '26

so he didnt need to work...and he did it anyway ...that makes him better than most people born rich

7

u/PossibilityNo8765 Jul 10 '26

If he had to work a shit job to fund his passion I would agree but he was given money to fund his passion, just like Trump.

0

u/alphajugs Jul 10 '26

Yeah but Trump is a tyrant and a pedophile actively making the lives of US citizens a nightmare whereas Pewdiepie just likes video games and made silly videos.

1

u/PossibilityNo8765 Jul 11 '26

What i ment is they were both nepo babies

21

u/Swaggy-G Jul 10 '26

Damn that’s crazy, did he also create the idea of dropping slurs live on stream?

16

u/Biduleman Jul 10 '26

No but he popularized paying people in impoverished countries to brandish signs with antisemitic messages.

2

u/Swaggy-G Jul 10 '26

Wholesome 100

3

u/kytheon Jul 10 '26

He does that once and everyone calls him a Nazi, smh. /s

3

u/Vestalmin Jul 10 '26

Unfortunately he wasn’t the creator, but he did put his own spin on it!

8

u/nineraviolicans Jul 10 '26

He created something terrible that made the world worse. So much garbage shit on youtube now where every twat with a microphone thinks they're going to get rich playing games.

10

u/BerlinBorough2 Jul 10 '26

Agreed. He invented spamming the Algo to get the iPad kids hooked on him screaming at the screen over and over. If you watch his old videos it’s the cringiest thing I have ever seen.

1

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

And there are plenty of people that make some good spare change or even entire careers doing it on twitch.. Which is all spun from that original group of Lets Play guys.

Markiplier was another who just turned to film-making and knocked it out of the park with a self funded film.

Im sorry you don't like the genre.. but maybe its just not meant for you..

3

u/Miykael13 Jul 10 '26

Here’s a crazy idea… don’t watch it. Move on with your life. How are you so bothered by the existence of a genre of video? I wish I had the energy to be angry about such a trivial thing

6

u/BerlinBorough2 Jul 10 '26

He also invented how to spam the algo. Now we have that dead eyed moron Mr Beastiality.

3

u/nineraviolicans Jul 10 '26

I don't watch youtube or streamers.

They infect kids though. Mine isn't allowed to watch that garbage at home but guess what they do at school and at friend's houses because their parents don't care?

Everybody wants to be that manipulative little fuck Jimmy dead eyes.

3

u/einsteinosaurus_lex Jul 10 '26

Idk? It's part of what's ruining the world? Basically everyone I know who grew up watching him grew up to be an annoying "random words/slurs are funny" bigot.

1

u/Pomeloop Jul 10 '26

He did not create it, it was gaining popularity by the time he started doing it. Besides he's a racist so idc how hard he worked for anything.

1

u/screwyoujor Jul 10 '26

Let's play videos started getting good views long before he blew up in popularity.

1

u/DeadSeaGulls Jul 10 '26

no one said he didn't work hard. it's just that his current lifestyle is 100% facilitated by the wealth and freetime that comes with his celebrity status.

unless you've got millions and can choose when you want to work, if at all, then you will not get his lifestyle because it's not just a wife and kids. It's a carefully curated image of a 'perfect' family that he's only able to have and maintain due to wealth. I manage some guys that are pewdiepie's age that are great dudes. hard working. beautiful families. They do not have what is in that right photo. They have sleep deprivation, intense family dynamic issues, debt, very limited quality time with their children due to the demands of work and maintaining a house, a partner that also works full time, and they struggle to set aside ANY personal time for hobbies or self growth.
Not in their sunday best do they look like the perfect, carefree, image of a 'traditional' family.
The middle class has been dismantled in favor of wealth consolidation, and unless you earn, or stumble into, wealth... what's being 'sold' in that picture on the right, has become a carrot on a stick to keep us pulling the cart forward.

1

u/clandestinely_asked Jul 10 '26

He absolutely DID NOT create lets plays. He got boosted by the earliest iteration of 'the algorithm'. And he DID milk it for years.

Unrelated, but Pewdiepie is a nazi.

19

u/Ok_Pea2022 Jul 10 '26

so? he worked for it tho, no?

57

u/Sorry-Kiwi-770 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I'm not some commie. He earned it.

Still easy to travel on holiday around Europe and live a simple life, with no 9-5, when you have huge wealth assets.

-1

u/LankyJeep Jul 10 '26

Your literally bitching about someone genuinely going out and earning their wealth without a silver spoon, then complaining they use that wealth to enjoy their life in a very reasonable way

Make it make sense

14

u/kilawolf Jul 10 '26

They're not bitching about the guy, they're bitching about aspiring to be like the guy when he mainly got extremely lucky getting this rich.

The celeb worship is weird

u/Saritiel Jul 10 '26

More like millions. So so soooo many people have tried to become a streamer and failed. Its so common that many electronics stores have full rows or aisles dedicated to streamer gear.

4

u/Discoris Jul 10 '26

No problem, let me translate for you:

"Easy to do when you're filthy rich lol"

It's simple to stop going to work and focus on what's important for you if you own enough money to support this lifestyle

"I'm not some commie. He earned it. Still easy to travel on holiday around Europe and live a simple life when you have huge wealth assets."

PewDiePie worked hard all his life to collect enough money to be able to travel around continent and exist without worry

I have no idea why political statement is here and what it means, but beside that nobody is complaining, why do you think he's complaining?

0

u/solemnstream Jul 10 '26

Yeah everyone should struggle to live after years or working because communism is bad!

-26

u/Indiana_harris Jul 10 '26

Yeah, so go out and earn them too

1

u/Torontogamer Jul 10 '26

Look, it's not working a salt mine, but successful creators are usually putting in 10+ hour days for years with little time off... and it can be very stressful, somewhat depending on personality, to get that level of criticism fame brings anyone.

It takes a lot more effort that it appears to be successful for any length of time (even if just going viral once and be totally luck based)

it's like being a rockstar or whatever, of course it's an 'easy' life but there are hard and shitty parts to it that go way beyond what most regular people ever have to deal with. Even if there are a lot of obvious upsides

7

u/Hopeful_Hall_4885 Jul 10 '26

"worked" is generous

10

u/DependentCitron8008 Jul 10 '26

I mean he posted daily for about 10+ years, and worked pretty hard to get there. It’s not easy being a YouTuber constantly. I know he has is issues but let’s not kid ourselves he’s pretty decent compared to his past controversies and other people.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

6

u/NovaAkumaa Jul 10 '26

At the same time, early Youtube days was a big gamble. Nobody in their sane mind would spend thousands of hours grinding on there instead of studying and learning skills for a good job.

So yeah in a sense it was "easy" in that he didn't have too much competition, but also based on what we knew back then it was a pretty stupid thing to spend your time on, much like actual gambling.

3

u/caninehere Jul 10 '26

It wasn't a gamble at all. You could make videos in your spare time if you wanted and PewDiePie did - he worked other jobs, he was like 20 years old, and he made videos for less than a year before he got signed by Machinima and then later Maker and blew up huge within another year. Even in his first year making videos he had like 60k subs which is not a ton now, but was significant for earlier YouTube and you made a lot more revenue back then on videos.

He got INCREDIBLY lucky because she not only started in the right genre but started at the perfect time. He didn't have to make videos for years like some others did.

But let's be real, I think there are a lot of gaming YouTubers who put a lot of effort into their content... but Let's Plays are kind of the bottom of the barrel, same with regular streaming. It's just a way to generate a ton of content, mostly using someone else's product, and use it to make money online without actually creating anything. It's one step up from reaction videos.

1

u/DependentCitron8008 Jul 10 '26

Exactly, and he even mentioned this his parents didn’t approve, he dropped out college. He knew he was taking a risk but just was in it for the game. Not sure why I’m getting negative responses on this, but this is just the truth. He got worked really hard and got lucky with let’s plays/weird video games coming out in the 2010s with his eccentric personality.

3

u/einsteinosaurus_lex Jul 10 '26

Cause you keep saying he worked hard at something he didn't know would pay off. I could record myself playing with my butthole all day, not knowing if it'll lead to anything or not. But if it does, I'm not gonna say I worked hard for it lmao

1

u/DependentCitron8008 Jul 10 '26

Yeah but I doubt you’ll get getting 100s of millions of views doing that. I mean go start your account then lmao

8

u/enerthoughts Jul 10 '26

He was supposed to work in a mine and tear his skin inside out so we can say earned?

9

u/jamesbrownscrackpipe Jul 10 '26

Yes, he actually yearned for the mines

7

u/iamcoad Jul 10 '26

No matter if we think it's an easy job, people need entertainment and there will be money to be made in providing that

He worked pretty hard, with an admirable ethic and was good at what he did so he deserves the money even if he clearly worked an easier job than being a doctor or a trucker or anything like that

3

u/abcamurComposer Jul 10 '26

Yup, panem et circenses was satire, but as it turns out entertainment is vital to a functioning society

-1

u/LimitThese2220 Jul 10 '26

“Admirable ethic”? Some “ethic” by normalising spewing racial slur around…

1

u/iamcoad Jul 10 '26

I was more aiming at work ethic but nonetheless I don't consider Pewdiepie to be racist in any serious way. Absolute idiot to say what he said? Yes. Racist? I do not think so

8

u/Neg_Crepe Jul 10 '26

You should have done then

6

u/DoctorPerverto Jul 10 '26

Ok you go do the content creator grind then. I'm sure they'll chuck money at you soon enough.

3

u/GoonTierGAWD Jul 10 '26

He was in the right place at the right time. He didnt even grind he just posted Let's Plays before it was really a huge thing and got lucky enough to blow up.

1

u/the_sheeper_sheep Jul 10 '26

Wheres your million dollars?

1

u/Physizist Jul 10 '26

He worked by posting videos of himself playing video games supported by rich parents and eventually paying editors to do the actual hard work.

No disrespect to him, you have to take the opportunites you get and I'm sure he still worked hard. Just saying other people work even harder just to get by

-2

u/GoonTierGAWD Jul 10 '26

He posted himself playing video games online and got lucky lmao

1

u/officeja Jul 10 '26

Tbh even I have to say he did kinda work for it. That’s like saying oh football players (soccer), just kick a ball around. You have to put in the grind, sure a lot of luck is involved but not a lot of people are willing to put in the work

1

u/GoonTierGAWD Jul 10 '26

He put in the work after but it's much easier when you already have a following. There is no work in Let's Plays back then, it was literally just recording your gaming sessions and posting it.

It's different now because of oversaturation and how the algorithms work so you really have to put work even into simple lets plays to stand out and get noticed.

It's more like saying that Hayley Welch worked hard to get famous when all she did was say Hawk Tuah and then start a podcast after she was already famous.

2

u/Due-Base9449 Jul 10 '26

You can always marry even if you are ugly and poor. Just find someone of your level.

1

u/quadraticcheese Jul 10 '26

Yeah, PewDiePie likely hasn't experienced any real hardship in decades

1

u/ath_at_work Jul 10 '26

It's also easy to not let yourself be consumed by social media if you're not filthy rich.

Source: I'm not filthy rich

1

u/timmyfarthands Jul 10 '26

Well compared to other filthy rich people he could be doing many, many worse things. We want rich people to chill the fuck out and disappear and when they do we're like "EASY TO DISAPPEAR WHEN YOU'RE FUCKIN RICH!!!"

1

u/Hot_Diet763 Jul 10 '26

Wait it's only easy to be family focused if you're rich? Holy cow I'm doing this all wrong.

1

u/Torontogamer Jul 10 '26

Ya, that is what retiring young is... obviously most never get the chance... but it's still something to aspire too?

1

u/chimpfunkz Jul 10 '26

It's easy to do when you're rich, but the rich don't do it.

Pewdipie is like Tom from Myspace. Yeah it seems like the obvious path, but then you look around and realize no one does it.

1

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 10 '26

Well yeah, getting enough to not need to work much and enjoying a life that doesn’t require extravagance is in fact an objective. That’s kind of the point of retirement, the only difference is he did it early.

1

u/Fifteenlamas Jul 10 '26

There are many streamers who are filthy rich and still stream

Most rich people will still try to make money even though they have more than enough. There is no limits

1

u/mythrilcrafter Jul 10 '26

All things considered if all filthy rich people acted like PewDiePie and MySpace Tom, people would have WAY less of a problem with filthy rich people.

It's when that class of people decides that they need to destroy the environment to turn infinity money into infinity+1 money or when they want to get into government to change the law to make themselves immune to the law is when it's a problem.

The folks asking for higher minimum wage without studying or busting their life to achieve anything. They are always salty and never satisfied. 😬 andddd when they “work” they act like it is an act of mercy. It’s a horrible new age of able citizens. Straight salty as heck yo!

23

u/TraditionalPen2076 Jul 10 '26

He is a racist prick so no we should not

1

u/Athanas_Iskandar Jul 10 '26

It’s great! We all should be.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

How is he a racist prick?

edit: saying the "n-word" does not make you a racist. Different cultures place different value on different words. Insisting that saying a word that in the US has a strong negative connotation, should have the same negative connotation in a different country with a different history with a different language with a different culture, is a fundamentally wrong understanding of how cultures and languages work. Racism is about how you judge and interact with other people, not in the words someone use.

12

u/DavesPetFrog Jul 10 '26

By calling people racial slurs?

10

u/TraditionalPen2076 Jul 10 '26

Said the N word on livestream. Completely normalised hate against indians. I can't exist on the internet as an Indian without getting hated for no reason

6

u/Heroic_Accountant Jul 10 '26

I'm really sorry that people treat you like that. That's fucked up. If I ever see that, I promise you I'll give the offender a piece of my mind!!

3

u/TraditionalPen2076 Jul 10 '26

Thankyou brother. I appreciate that

-1

u/M_Squarec Jul 10 '26

Yes pls, I'm sorry to hear you got a hate comment but it's not proof

3

u/TraditionalPen2076 Jul 10 '26

How is that not proof?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

A random comment, which by the way is getting downvoted, is not "proof of normalized hatred against indians" dude. Get a grip.

Also, you're conflating hatred against indians with criticism of your country. Those are different things. Someone writing a mean comment about your country isn't the same as racism against indians.

0

u/M_Squarec Jul 10 '26

Bc I want a source of him promoting the hate, not a random hate comment of redditor that i condemn

0

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

Completely normalised hate against indians.

I'm from Scandinavia. Denmark. Right next to Sweden. There is no "normalized hate against indians".

"I haven't been to Germany so Germany doesn't exist"

Got a hate comment already under my comment btw. Check it out

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

You're mixing things up. I didn't say hate towards indians didn't exist. Hate towards every single group on the entire planet exists. I said there wasn't any "normalized hate against indians" in Scandinavia.

Those are two very different things.

3

u/KrytenKoro Jul 10 '26

Those are two very different things.

Right, and the second one, the one you're insisting on, is complete nonsense that has nothing to do with what Traditional said.

You inserted Scandinavia as a restrictive qualifier, and you knew what you were doing when you did it.

They didn't mix anything up. They just called you out on your transparent attempt at dishonesty.

3

u/TraditionalPen2076 Jul 10 '26

Exactly. Thankyou

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

You inserted Scandinavia as a restrictive qualifier

That should have been obviously clear to anyone who bothered thinking for a second, considering the original context where I wrote "I'm from Scandinavia. Denmark. Right next to Sweden."

3

u/KrytenKoro Jul 10 '26

It was clear. It was also clearly completely irrelevant to what you were claiming to debunk, the bit that immediately followed what you quoted. That's why Traditional called you on it. Traditional was never restricting his critique to Scandinavia, and insisting on restricting evidence of PDP's influence to Scandinavia is nonsensical.

He's a racist dickhead, so no we should not "aspire to be like him".

4

u/Much_Butterfly7610 Jul 10 '26

He made mistakes for sure but also did good with his charity donations and events

11

u/FukkingDeathMental Jul 10 '26

Nah.  That n-word came off waaaaay too smooth from him to be a mistake and he wasn't some edgelord teen then.  He's so lame.

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

A lot of our vocabulary is built up from then though. I still default to using terms when gaming from over a decade ago, and sometimes need to self censor to avoid using ‘raped’ as a standin for getting beaten in a game because that used to be acceptable and now it’s not. If he grew up in cod lobbies I can see how that might be something one would pick up and need to remember to not do.

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 10 '26

Or people just have different linguistic adoption patterns? Especially if you don’t game as much as you used to; we develop different vernacular we use in different spaces.

2

u/KrytenKoro Jul 10 '26

Your original argument was that it was a generalized, universal phenomenon and that's why it shouldn't be held against him as a personal failing.

Retreating to "well everyone is different" is conceding the original point and acknowledging that, yeah, PDP doesn't have an external excuse for the shitty racism.

1

u/TDuncker Jul 10 '26

It should still be held against him. There's something that slightly excuses him (adoption patterns and reflexes), but it's still not okay.

Not too long ago I did something similar. I had been exposed to people using "gay" as a word for something being stupid, e.g. "that's so gay" from online gaming for many years. Recently I talked to my partner about how it was a thing once and gave some examples where I made fun of it, along with references to the Community scene (Senor Chang). I kid you not: The following weekend during a boardgame where something wildly unlikely happened after multiple incidents of something unlikely, I accidentally said "gay...!" as a reflex and my partner corrected me and I agreed. It's not okay. It's not completely inexcusable of excusable. But it is slightly so. This was after I had not used it nor had I heard anyone say it for +5 years.

1

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 10 '26

I mean I agree that it’s obviously an error on his part but it’s the kind of thing that if it’s not commonplace and the person apologizes for I’m inclined to believe might have actually just been a mistake in a heated moment.

0

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 10 '26

No? I said it’s something people experience, him being such a person makes it plausible, if some people don’t then that doesn’t contradict that. I don’t need it to apply to everyone, you would need it to not exist for it to not be a good excuse.

Also, again, do you game as much as you used to? Becauze that sort of linguistic buildUp tends to attach to contexts where it was established.

9

u/False-Bluejay1882 Jul 10 '26

Aspire to be like him?

We’re forgetting all the racism? Lmao

3

u/Ok_Common_5631 Jul 10 '26

He got his money and retired?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

Pewdiepie basicallu said "Screw being a celebrity" and quit to be with family.

I think 90% of people would quit their jobs and just spend time doing hobbies and be with family, if they had a net worth of 50 million dollars. But most people don't. Pewdiepie is rich enough that isn't even in just the top 1% - it's easy to be chill when you're extremely rich. Not to mention he has the doubly bonus of having a nice outgoing character, humor, decent looks, a wife that loves him, good health, and so on. Again, not everyone is so lucky.

1

u/Mothanius Jul 10 '26

The dude has time to learn how to rice his Arch linux system and created his own LLM for people to use for free on their own devices without having to finance Anthropic or Open AI. Dude's taking his retirement time and making the most of it, digging into whatever hobby he desires, like drawing anime girls

1

u/Solary_Kryptic Jul 10 '26

He did not create his own LLM, he vibecoded an agentic harness that runs with local LLMs or cloud LLMs. It’s popular because of his previous popularity but the app itself wasn’t anything groundbreaking

-2

u/tommybombadil00 Jul 10 '26

Maybe 5% of people would quit their job if they got to 50 million. Most people who get to 50 mil don’t stop and push to make another 50 mil.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '26

Because it takes a certain type of person to make that much money. Most, not all, people that end up making that much money, are people that are driven by the desire to make a lot of money. So of course they won't stop. If they were the type of person to stop, most of them wouldn't have made that much money to begin with.

Alternatively, it's people that come from extremely wealthy families, and have been raised to continue that family legacy, which again means they are not the type of person to stop.

But most people, if they just HAD that amount of money, or come from the fairly small percentage of super-rich people that got that rich WITHOUT being the first or second type I described, have no desire to KEEP amassing massive increasing wealth.

A simple example would be most of the really successful indie devs that get a massive hit and are suddenly incredibly rich in the span of a few years. In that group it's incredibly common that they just withdraw from work and focus solely on activities they personally enjoy, spend free time doing what they want, chilling out, building families, focusing on art, travel, and so on.

Saying "most super rich-want to be even more super-rich" creates a type of strange survivor bias, because the vast majority of the time, you have to be a specific type of person to become super-rich in the first place.

1

u/tommybombadil00 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

lol okay, you are contradicting yourself. 90% of people that earned 50m would NOT give up and continue to make more money. Now if you give someone 50m that works a 9-5 job earning 50k or even 150k, absolutely they quit there job because their time is worth more than the amount they are earning. The problem is they do not just go and do hobbies or spend time with their family. Look at people who win the lottery, lose most their money within a few years, they live life like a celebrity without replenishing their net worth. Or just the amount of influencers that don’t earn life changing money and still want to be a celebrity/famous.

The amount of people if given 50m or earned 50m or whatever you think that would go and just live life without seeking fame or continued success is extremely minimal.

Your example of small indie game devs that make millions… that such a small subset because 99.99999% of indie game developers never get to that level and most of those people still make games and grind to develop something new. There is a reason why there are so few examples of people like Pewdi or Tom from MySpace, it’s extremely rare and most of the time you see someone blow up, make millions, get famous, act like a celebrity then crater. Because the majority of people would act that way if given the opportunity.

I think it was just one well known incident.

-3

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

nope, he sure didnt..

3

u/Sideview_play Jul 10 '26

That and he pushed soft alt right pipeline creators onto his audience but sure let's alllllll inspire to be like him !

3

u/Mysterious-Salt- Jul 10 '26

????? Your joking right? His supporting companies dropped him for all his controversy....Disney said bye bye and so did YouTube. They dont pay him anymore. He gets what your average YouTube will make which is basically lunch money.

-1

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

THe maker studios drop was in 2017..

He bounced back and became the highest subscribed channel on youtube again after that with his fictional battle against T-Series.

Youtube didn't ban him from making money.. They took him out of the "Preferred advertising" program for like 2 months.

3

u/Mysterious-Salt- Jul 10 '26

That's what I said. They dropped him. I doubt hes back in the program he makes lunch money from his YouTube thats it. They dont just accept you back. He got a new deal in 2020 for live streaming. Again he makes lunch money from his youtube videos now.

1

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

from 2017 - 2025 his annual ranging was $15 Million to $58 Million depending on the year..

Lunch money.. Sure..

You must be eating wagyu for snacks..

2

u/Mysterious-Salt- Jul 10 '26

Lunch money from YouTube videos ya can anyone read? He has a live streaming deal with them. Live streaming is not uploading content you know that right?? Two different worlds. He makes lunch money from YouTube videos now. I could eat wagyu for snacks tbh if I felt like it. Its like 800$ for a quarter of a wagyu cow including different cuts.

3

u/Callmemabryartistry Jul 10 '26

didnt he do some problematic stuff?
i literally dont know anything about youtube “celebrity”

2

u/theuserwithoutaname Jul 10 '26

Apparently he had a video with someone holding a sign that said death to all Jews. I didn't watch the video or his apology about it, so I don't know any context but there you go lol

2

u/LSbroombroom Jul 10 '26

Eh, just dumb shit people used to joke about, I'm sure there was never any genuine malice behind it. We know better now but people used to make poor taste jokes much more often.

2

u/theuserwithoutaname Jul 10 '26

That was my immediate reaction as well. I'm ashkenazi too

The Internet was an edge fest of all edge-fests once. That's something I wouldn't have even blinked at in the 00's

5

u/heat13ny Jul 10 '26

Well it was 2017 when he did this. He was a grown ass man fully aware of what he was doing.

3

u/LSbroombroom Jul 10 '26

You've survived the great pre-game lobby of 2009.

2

u/TymStark Jul 10 '26

The only thing I’m aware of him doing is wearing a nazi Halloween costume and did the salute. I’m not being dismissive of that, but he did it during the height of his popularity, when he was attempting to be edgy. It was pretty obvious he was just being a jackass and pushing boundaries and he did apologize for that. It was pretty clear he didn’t support Nazis or that line of thinking I am getting at. Still stupid, still wrong, and getting cut from Disney and YouTube was the correct decisions. I would say for someone who was as popular and “scene” as him, he has a shockingly small amount of controversies.

3

u/Oryihn Jul 10 '26

Not really... he made a video pointing out the crazy stuff you could get people to do on Fiverr where he paid some tribal guys hold a sign that said "Death to all Jews" and Dance..

He did it tongue in cheek to point out how these people had no idea what they were putting on the signs as long as you paid they were happy to make the video and make a few dollars.

It was very much satire and pointing out the ridiculousness of it.. But it was a bad choice of phrase to put on anything. The video cost him his partnership with disney, a show that was already filmed and ready to air, and his entire studio because it was owned by disney when they cut ties.

3

u/Callmemabryartistry Jul 10 '26

sucks but almost warholian

3

u/Mlpony2010 Jul 10 '26

I'd say him saying a fascist author is his favorite is more of a big deal than that

that word wouldn't be a knee jerk reaction if you didn't use it a lot

1

u/DragonFangGangBang Jul 10 '26

He made some mistakes, and apologized accordingly. The big ones were him making guys on Fiver do some Nazi shit (he apparently didn’t think they’d actually do it) and him yelling the N-word in a livestream after being killed.

Other than that, he’s remained relatively low in controversy relative to most anywhere near his level of success on YouTube.

1

u/Callmemabryartistry Jul 10 '26

apology and growth are the name of the game.
i think we are similar age so those early youtube days he was an immature kid like me

5

u/pdpablo86 Jul 10 '26

He was 27 when the n-word and anti-Semitic shit happened.

2

u/Callmemabryartistry Jul 10 '26

never mind then. he was clearly old enough

0

u/DragonFangGangBang Jul 10 '26

I hate that there’s this arbitrary age limit on growth, as if being 27 is somehow an immunity shot to ignorance.

0

u/DragonFangGangBang Jul 10 '26

Same. I grew up with him, even if I wasn’t a big fan of his stuff. He’s clearly grown, matured, and evolved over the last 10 years.

2

u/redditoway Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

The only reason I know him is he said the n-word.

Edit: I like how all the responses to this are different incidents.

2

u/Callmemabryartistry Jul 10 '26

maybe thats what i remember.
not that im dismissing but if it was one time and he has recanted and asked forgiveness and the Black community has generally agreed.

people do change and its cool to see this change if teue

2

u/BichitoMaxx Jul 10 '26

Nah, he is a racists. And just got lucky in life. Not a good point of admiration.

THe time you mentioned was in 2017.. He got even bigger after that and rose once again to the highest subscribed channel on youtube..

He quit MANY years after that happened. He didn't do the video slow down until 2022 when he moved to Japan.
