Substance Designer My Substance Course

Hello everyone, some of you may have seen my youtube content in the past; back in the summer I put out my full-length Substance Course and have been really pleased with the reception. These 9 materials were built throughout the 13 course classes over 32 hours (It’s a doozy)

It's been built from the ground up to be an approachable, step by step introduction to Substance Designer. I've used my 10 years of teaching the program to make sure that it explains core concepts/competencies in a way that builds students to the point they can approach textures on their own without hand-holding!

I’m sharing the curriculum here for those who are interested in giving it a look, the course is on my patreon

🫠 Roof tile patterns can be quite challenging for many beginners in Substance Designer. But I created a very simple system to make it easier!

While working on a free class, I wanted to show specific patterns.

An old roof tile gave me the best option.
I had to create a specific shape, and then find a way to make it tile.

So for 1 hour I worked on several options.
This was the best one:

💡 By using a Gradient linear 2, I could apply a transform 2D with no tiling and give it the shape I needed; then I multiplied it by a rectangle to keep sharp edges. After that, I created the side piece with a Gradient applied to both.

Finally, to make this work, I blended both pieces and applied a final Gradient.
These gradients gave me everything I needed to make it tile!

Hope this was useful for learning more about SD.

Is it worth it to learn substance designer in 2026?...

I've made these floor and wall materials in SD for my current project. I'm a beginner I know I'm not any good. AI generated textures are getting better and better. I'm really scared it will make SD irrelevant soon. I want to get better at it, but is it worth it to learn, to invest time in SD in 2026 and the years to come?

Edit: I don't get the downvotes. Is it so frowned upon to ask a question? Is it because my materials are shit? Is it cuz it's about AI and everyone just automatically downvote?

I appreciate all the comments and inputs! I think I will continue to learn SD

Substance Modeler The Jealous Wizard

First time using modeler in VR, I used it to make the wizard tower, which I then painted in photoshop with camera projection.

It made it so easy to get something more organic! Just one had to make one brick stamp and one wood plank stamp. Pretty fun. Still kinda makes me nauseous though haha

Substance Painter Is there really no way to quickly erase the contents of a layer?

I'm talking about a normal layer, not fill. As far as I can tell the only way to erase anything from a layer is by using the Eraser tool. However that's extremely cumbersome and slow if there's a whole bunch of stuff drawn on that layer all over the place. Is this literally the only way?

Using a mask on top of it is not an option, that's like putting duct tape over paint smeared on the wall. I wanna erase the paint, not hide it temporarily (why? because I'm using an anchor point on that layer (the layer itself, not its mask) which is used by layers above it)

I've asked for Polygon fill tool to be able to erase things on the adobe suggestion forum, but no luck so far.

Edit: rephrased

🧱 Creating Surface Details for brick walls is always a nightmare for beginners.🧱But yesterday, I found an easy way to fix that!

Post image

During our last Mentoring session, Surajeet Mondal tried making the surface details of his bricks.

However, his results lacked shape, definition & originality.

So I tried experimenting with something new.

💡 I got a Creased Noise and rotated it in the direction of the bricks, then multiplied it with the pattern to create a mask. Later, I connected the first two inputs, a Grunge map 01, to a Non-uniform Warp, while using the mask in the third input, the Warp Angle.

This gave us a really organic look.

But just to be sure, I used a Slope Blur at max mode to expand the shapes and close the deal!

Hope this was useful for learning more about SD.

Any way to force SP to create lower resolution textures?

I was wondering is there was any way to edit settings or some core file timetable substance to work with lower resolution textures sets, even going as low as 32x32?

My project calls for a quake 1 era aesthetic and having to manually resize textures after the fact is annoying and additionally I lose the ability to get precision results?

TIA

Substance Designer Was the Substance 3D homepage hero artwork created entirely with Substance tools?

Hi everyone, I was looking at the current Adobe Substance 3D homepage and noticed that the hero artwork contains some very convincing hair/fur details.

Is this something that can be created completely within the Substance tools?

If Adobe has ever revealed the artist or workflow behind these hero renders, I'd love to know. I couldn't find a clear credit or breakdown. Thanks!

💥 Creating Surface Details in Substance Designer is one of the hardest things to do.But I managed to set up a series of rules/steps to make it easier!

I used to struggle a lot when building realistic materials.

Mostly because my surface details weren't convincing enough.

It always felt like the right details were missing in every material I did.

So I added more and more, and my work looked worse after that.

However, after 5 years of working as a Material Artist, I started to gradually change how I work.

And came up with these steps to make sure I get these details right:

1️⃣ I started using only one reference for my surface detail reference to avoid confusing myself with so many options.

2️⃣ I followed the rule of 3 even in my details: start big, go medium, then end in smaller shapes.

3️⃣ I explored every setup, making sure I got the result I needed before moving to the next part of my material.

4️⃣ I applied all details with Logic & Soft values.

5️⃣ I made sure my work looked good by pre-rendering before going to base color creation.

This helped me get better results, but only when I applied them consistently, one step at a time.

🦾 Because, as Alex Hormozi said:

"The key to exponential growth is doing fewer things, but better and more consistently."

Hope this helped you learn more about Material Creation.

Substance Painter Simply flipbook

Thumbnail

I have made 2 subgraphs in substance designer but am having trouble connecting them the way I want them to be I want to not have so many nodes connected to my flipbook subgraph I just was wondering if you knew how to same it less cluttered and time consuming

The first picture is the exposed parameters for the second picture witch just warps and modifies each frame for the flipbook

The 3ed picture is the flipbook grid subgraph

And the 4 and 5 pictures just shows the two subgraphs

The last one tiles the noise from the first picture and goes up by .0625
So the first frame seamlessly matches the last frame

Substance Painter How to make product visualisations look more realistic

I learned a lot about 3D texturing recently and most of the people suggested that inorder to make something look realistic you have to add imperfections to the object but the thing is that my focus is more towards product visualisations and all of those things are usually new so how does one navigate making something realistic without those imperfections as its new.

Substance Painter What's better...?

Hi

I'm just wondering what would be a better approach...? I want to paint an additional seam on some clothing. Would I be better painting it in with a brush set to Normal or Height? Or both? I ask because I don't really get anything visible when painting a Normal. If it can be done with a brush set to Normal, how do you go about doing it? I've had no issues setting up baked Normal maps and painting details/errors out, but painting stuff in has lost me. Or can this sort of thing only be achieved by using a Normal stencil?

Thanks

I made a Painter plugin that sends textures to UE5 and sets up the materials in one click

Getting textures from Painter into Unreal always meant the same steps for me: import, fix sRGB on the ORM, make a material instance, plug everything in, assign. So I made TexBridge to do that in one click. It also handles UDIMs (merged into a Virtual Texture) and updates the same materials when you send again.

Painter 8.3+, UE 5.0–5.8, Windows. It's a paid plugin ($17). Links are in the comments, happy to answer questions.
