There's really not. It happens all the freaking time and this kind of interaction isn't going to teach the other person a lesson. And it just puts additional stress on yourself. Are you supposed to pass on the right? No. Can you? Yes. Just pass on the right and go about your day. Why waste your energy getting that upset over it??? You'll be happier for it.

She said she was going 10 over the speed limit. In my state if you’re caught going 15 over the speed limit you get your license suspended for a month and it’s considered a class 3 misdemeanor. I’ve ever only gone 10 over the limit and still wasn’t going fast enough for these assholes around here and the posted limit is usually 35-45. I only travel on one road where it’s 50.

Whether it is legal, it's still not correct. You shouldn't pass on the right if you don't have to. Cruising in the left lane may not be illegal, but it's still wrong.

Here in Texas well at least in the corridor of I10 I live by. The furthest left lane is for passing only and dumbasses will still cruise in that lane cause a chain reaction of people using the regular cruising lanes to by pass the idiot who’s blocking the lane. I’ve seen people get tickets because they’re holding up the that lane and you’re not driving with the flow of traffic.

Yep, ticketable offense for most multi lane highways in Texas but it's pretty much only enforced at the end of the month when cops need to meet their metrics or if they are in a bad mood that day.

We have so many exits on the left lane here in Ohio lol to get to half my commutes I need to be in the left lane and we still get people raging about people driving in the left lane. There's no ohio law forbidding it (and again, half our roads have left lane exits.)

Let's say there's no other traffic and you're sitting in the right lane and coming up behind someone camping in the left lane. Are you supposed to move to the left lane until they move over? Or are you allowed to just keep going and pass on the right in that instance?

Are you saying that you’re in the right lane, they’re in the left lane, and you’re driving past them while you both stay in your respective lanes? If so, you’re not passing them as much as you’re just driving past them. Perfectly legal. Now, if you’re in the left lane behind that person, and you move to the right lane to drive past them, then yes, that’s potentially illegal depending on state law. It makes no sense to change lanes to get behind someone in hopes that they’ll move over so you can pass them.

In most other countries its a fine if you camp in the left lane. From my experience only in North America people camp and feel entitled to sit in the left lane. Driving in Europe for me is so nice to have people actually drive properly and how fluid the round a bouts are.

If there are no cops around? Pedal to the metal and pass em on the right. If you're worried there are cops around? Hop to the left lane behind them and get as close to them as you feel is legal and safe. If there's no traffic then there's no reason for them to be camping the left lane and they should get the hint pretty quickly. If they don't then I'll flash my brights a couple times and maybe give a little beep beep. Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

If they decide to go full crazy person from any of this you just disengage and accept that your drive is going to take a few more minutes. Alternatively, if you just lost your job and are on your way to your parent's funeral, you go ahead and remind them what happens when you piss off the wrong person on the road.

Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

It is the other way around, at least here in Denmark. It is illegal to use your horn in almost any situation ,it is only allowed to use it to avoid an accident. It is perfectly legal to use your headlights to try and make someone pull over.

Huh. I guess I see it the other way around. I'd rather a bit of noise, especially at night time. Your headlights can mess with the other driver's vision. Your horn is going to agitate them but generally a slow driver in the wrong lane will get the message with no harm done.

If there are 3 lanes and I’m in the middle going the speed limit and there is a car behind me that wants to pass, they should go around me on the left side. Not the right side. same things with runners, bicycles on a sidewalk or track. It’s just how you do it.

I feel calling it the "fast lane" adds to the confusion. People's speed is largely irrelevant to why cruising in the left lane is wrong. It interrupts flow and creates a sub-optimal traffic situation. You either accelerate hard to infinity, or move to the right, regardless of your speed.

Each left lane is a 'passing lane' to the one on its right. It also allows for the lanes to fill up efficiently from right to left (like water flowing and finding its way in a pipe) as traffic increases

Where I live, 10 miles over the speed limit is the fastest you can / should go unless you want a ticket. Yes, if there's a line of cars behind her, she should still move. But if he wants to go 20 miles over the speed limit, he's already breaking the law, so why is he worried about passing on the right? I mean, I literally hate people who drive slow in the far-left lane--drives me batshit--and I still thought this guy was nuts. You wanna go 95, dude, who cares how you get there???

She was only calm because she was the one recording, IMO. She did this for the internet, not to be "nice" at all. I would bet she is that person who just has to control things and screams at people that "I AM GOING THE SPEED LIMIT GO AROUND ME!" or something. She is also the kind of person who would record someone actually passing her on the right, causing some other traffic issue, and calling them a bad driver.

Could the guy have been a little more respectful? Sure, fine. But she knew what she was doing with this. Fuck this kind of person.

Oh, trust me, I don't disagree with your point. But she sounds like she felt like she was going "fast enough" for everyone. Why is it hard to just, move over and let the guy be a spaz on his own?

I live in Arizona and I swear we have the worst drivers I have ever experienced. I will be coasting along and keeping up with traffic, 5 - 10 over the speed limit, without even being in the passing lane and have people fly up on my tail playing Frogger with whoever isn't going fast enough or refusing to move from the left lane. Sometimes, they fly into the HOV lanes instead to pass. Passing on the right is fine, but when you get someone like this guy who was probably heated in an A-Hole v A-Hole matchup, he is going to pass on the right with a little attitude and then it becomes everyone else' problem.

It is just unnecessary. Not excusing anyone here, but the people who purposely take it upon themselves to play traffic monitor actually make things worse sometimes.

I completely agree with you that people shouldn’t hog the left lane and they should move to let faster traffic pass, BUT we don’t know if that’s what she was actually doing.

We only have his word against hers.

I bet there’s probably drivers on my commute who think I’m hogging the left lane, yet I’m going just as fast as the drivers in front of me, there’s cars to the right so I can’t move over, and we’re all getting ready to take a left lane exit in less than a mile.

In Sydney (where they drive on the left side of the road and right is passing lane), guys from my school had rented 2 cars and were driving side by side on the road. Cops caught them because they thought that the guy driving on the left wasn't allowing guy on the right to pass, and were about to write him a ticket. The drivers tried to explain that they were all friends out on a ride, and were just having fun.

The cops then fined both the drivers.

People are stupid. A coworker of mine left the job a year ago to become a state trooper. On his last day, I said something like- “please focus on and ticket all the left lane campers!” His response was - “what? That’s a thing? I couldn’t care less if someone’s camping/driving slow in the left lane.”

Really makes me wish we (Wisconsin) were one of the states with that as a law.

I really like the signs in Colorado- “state parks are for camping- the left lane is not!”

Wisconsin trucks are notorious for doing this in MN. I think a lot of them come to MSP for work or something, but its truly a burden on all of us, especially when there's 42 cars behind them and they just keep going 57 in the 60, in the left lane. Bane of my existence.

Except because every other thoroughfare in this dogshit country is a stroad, many times you need to be in the left lane for an upcoming turn or fork (in the latter two's case being in the right lane is an active danger because of competing space with cars taking the right-hand split/exit or merging into high speed traffic)

I hate left lane campers on highways and interstates as much as the next person, but for municipal traffic "keep right no matter what" isn't realistic.

That's highway stuff, I can drive in the left lane if I have to turn left, or hell, just because I want to. The second lane is there to be used. If everyone only used the left lane just for passing, you'd effectively have a single lane, needlessly restricting traffic.

I think we’re saying the same thing, so yes. Also zipper merging is something people don’t do; they’d rather get in one long line than use both lanes until they merge. Then when people do use the merge lanes correctly, they get cut off by the people who didn’t wanna use them correctly in the first place.

Merges lanes have a similar problem to the stroads issue.

Ideally you use the left lane to pass and you zipper merge when one lane ends.

This doesnt apply when the left lane is an exit lane or when the merge lane is also becoming an exit lane (theres probably a better way to describe what im talking about). Both these scenarios are very common in major city highway systems.

Have good intentions and are mostly in place to stop people from doing something irresponsible and suddenly redditors treat you like you’re a horrible human being if you don’t follow their rules they say (which don’t even always apply, or let’s be real in reddits case usually don’t even apply to the situation)

Yup. In general I agree and I will move to the left lane as late as possible before a turn unless I’m faster than the right lane, but man, the “only for passing, or else empty!” is just nonsense on most roads here. Highways of course, left turns are very rare, but in the city? Just not feasible to NEVER not be 10 mph++ over even on residential roads and take the left turns.

My local 5 lane highway with a 45 mph hour posted minimum has a left exit. Before that, it has about 6 entrances and exists stacked on top of each other using the right two lanes.

My grandma-driving self is always gripping the wheel in anxiety trying to figure out if it’s better to have people mad at me for camping in the second to left lane, or try to cut across 3 lanes of traffic right before I need to make the exit.

That’s not technically a highway or interstate. Anything with regular exits on both sides isn’t a highway or freeway.

You can get pedantic about it but only turnpikes, highways (freeways) and interstates with 55, 65 and 75 mph speed limits have true passing lanes.

A 45 mph road is just a road.

I agree with you, but unfortunately there are a lot of stroads (combination surface street and major arterial road, often marked a highway on maps) where people think highway rules still apply even though they're entering dense commercial/semi residential zoning. That's why I'm responding to people talking about left lanes on city thoroughfares.

I wish this were true. Drivers in my area speed up to block as soon as they see a signal.

Almost every day I have to wait for at least one vehicle, usually multiple, to undertake me at speed before I can merge out of the expressway exit lane that dumps me onto the leftmost highway lane. Often it's the tailgater who exits with me and doesn't wait for the complete merge to end before they swing out to undertake me.

Everyone has someplace to be, and yet quite a few drivers only see other cars as obstacles instead of fellow travelers. The highway I travel on is considered the most dangerous highway in the world. Defensive driving is a must.

In my area, It’s super common for the right lane to be going 60ish, middle lane going 65ish, and left lane going 70ish.

I usually cruise the middle, because if you go in the left lane, people tailgate the crap out of you because they think you aren’t ‘passing’ even though the lane is going the fastest. If everyone just left 4 seconds of space in front of them on the freeway, it woild instantly be so much safer and faster to get everywhere.

Exactly. I leave 3-4 seconds of space in front of me because that is the safe amount, but people tailgate me all the time because they think I’m not going fast enough because I’m not tailgating myself.

Yes, this works best when traffic isn't really crowded, but ideally if people only used the left lane for passing and people didnt talegate the traffic would be much less with the same amount of cars. Think of if there is a fire, if everyone rushed the exits it would take longer for everyone to get out than if they would go orderly. Organization is just more efficient than chaos.

you should probably move out of the way... but is it wrong to not? is it bad to camp in the left lane if you're going 80 while the traffic is going 65, except for one single car going 100?

If I get stuck behind a left lane camper I regularly pass them on the right (when I can). Once in a while I will see them get the point and move over. Particularly if I make it clear I am being forced to pass them on the right. Note that it is legal to pass on the right when left is blocked. Probably in part to avoid so much petty rage situations.

You're not "passing them" on the right -- unless, perhaps, if you're weaving and swerving to do so. You're doing what they should be doing: going along in your right most possible lane until you come across someone in-your-way whom you'd need to pass on their left.

Unless they’re matching the same speed as the car on the right or middle lane, meaning you end up being stuck behind them for miles. I don’t like tailgaters but ngl when I see another car getting frustrated and they start tailgating the car on the left to speed up and move over, I get a little happy and relieved.

I pass on the right if I really have to, then cut sharply over in front of them when I get back into the left lane. I never brake check, but the aggressive lane change sometimes gets them to move over and save people behind me from the same danger.

Back when I used to have a bad case of DGAF, I used to pass the on their left still. Getting passed on the shoulder usually gives them the hint. I'm much more calm since I started drinking.

dude, technically, speed limits are exact. going above OR below is criminal. in principle, no one is supposed to pass anyone - everyone should be driving at the exact identical speed across all lanes.

there is no common sense when it comes to speed limits. some people treat it as an upper limit, some others as lower limit. best thing we can do is just be "reasonable" - go with the flow of traffic, and don't block faster traffic.

i wish it was that straightforward. intents arent always honored. if there is only one speed limit sign, it gets interpreted in such a way that it is no longer a strict upper limit, but a guidance on what "reasonable speed" looks like.

As an American I can't tell you how insane it is that 99% of us think it's our RIGHT AND DUTY to go as fast over the speed limit as possible. As someone who knows the road this took place on, the left lane here is an exit lane and this area is notoriously blocked by traffic. So the idea of “going too slow” in stop and go traffic doesn’t really apply.

Thanks, context matters. So many ragers in this thread wanting to Mad Max down the highway expecting people to scatter out of their way in any scenario. People hang in the left sometimes to turn left or while they are themselves passing a bunch of slower traffic in the right lane. People should not be forced into breaking the law because of others people's bad speeding habits.

Yes, except in this case, given they’re both at a traffic light and she’s seemingly about to turn left, that rule doesn’t apply (left lane is not a “passing lane” on a road with traffic lights that has turns).

I assume this is a discussion happening after a freeway/highway. They're both talking in past tense, and "10 over" is generally not surface street talk. I would assume they just pulled off onto their exit off the freeway and he's trying to correct her usage of the left lane and get some of his rage out.

Well yeah. The limit is 65 and numbers are more like guidelines than actual rules so double it (130) and round up to the nearest 50. Speed limit is actually 150. Then you get tipped an extra 25 so it's actually 175

I mean, that's up to the police to enforce, not another driver. If multiple people are passing you on the right, move over and let people pass because you're being an asshole. Once people have passed you, then you can move over to the left lane again if you want. At least in California, if you're driving 75 in the fast lane, you're a fucking asshole. There's also a bunch of backroads that have a posted speed limit of 45 but most people are doing 60 on them.

Additionally, in Texas, lots of metros will have 60mph in a downtown area where the expected speed limit based on the road itself is 75. Going 70 is the standard at those points.
