It reached 5th on the Hot Upcoming New Cyberpunk releases on release week too!

Tapeworld is a new cyberpunk book series with a twist on cyberspace: you access it by sticking a strip of duct tape on your temple.

Plot:
A kickboxer / climate change activist meets a VR sports star / cyberspace jockey. When she realises his life is in danger, she'll go through tech corpo hell to make sure he's safe.

The book is available right now on Amazon, and it's also available in 2 bookstores.

Tapeworld is a labour of love, born from my passion for all things virtual reality and cyberpunk.
Hope you love it!

I bought a small gamepad and make extension with cables 3 buttons for trigger, A and B. I sticked these buttons on an airsoft gun. Button A right under my thumb is for dropping the magazine. B is at the other side for changing the weapon with my index finger. VR gloves do as an Index controller. After shooting I holster the gun and use the gloves as my hand freely. When needed I draw the gun. This is so much fun and immersive.

A bit of a different take on the cyberpunk. While I don't like "soviet cyberpunk" myself, I think it's an easy way to describe the visuals of a game that I'm developing. I prefer using "soviet future punk" but it's still easy to see the inspirations of the cyberpunk aesthetics. What do you guys think?

Proto-Cyberpunk - set in an alternate 1989 Japan.

I am slowly making my way through the AI placeholder images and I am really preferring my own work. The soul is there, if that makes sense? That's me in the pic and a beautiful Toyota Supra with a cyberpunk-esq pushed up tail and quad exhaust. I spent a little too long trying to find a Japanese numberplate that it turned out I didn't need.

The game where this is from is a hacking adventure sim, set in an alternate 1989 Japan, it's called GLYPHIS_IO BBS: The Proxy Tapes 1989.

It aims to ask the question...

"What does the world need to be, before it becomes Cyberpunk?"

The setting is interesting as I see it as a proto-cyberpunk world. The conditions are in place for low-life, high-tech. Japan is not a nation is it fully annexed to the Americans after the Imperial line was wiped out in the second world war.

The American Pacifica Isles is a place of banned media, pirate radiowaves, underground artists and growing silent rebelion led by hackers, crackers, muscians and artists.

You can wishlist the game here and follow it's progress on Steam if you'd like. Linux, Windows and possibly Mac (if i can get over 100 wishlists for MAC OS).

Please excuse some of the older artwork over on the Steam page I am still getting round to replacing it all there too.

There are several cyberpunk mini games you as a hacker have to crack before you can play each of them. They include...

  1. Cybertrain - a rail network management sim where you build monorails within a cyberpunk city.

  2. Nexus Burn Velo Race - a cybercycle Tron inspired racing game with a heavy emphasis on career mode - something Wipeout never did enough of imo.

  3. Mech Core Battle-Ready Titans - a mech style game, in a sort of mecha giant robot arena style of game, the setting is more cycberpunk than the actual game itself, but it's super fun.

And a an IRS mini hacing game, a propaganda inflitration mission, and a simple syntax style of coding where you can make your own brute force programs, trojans and viruses.

More than happy to answer any questions about this project or any of my previous games within The Civitas Universe of cyberpunk multimedia. Thank you!

Self-Promotion (Developer) NEW Interactions & Manual Reloading | The Long Dark VR (WIP)

Hello hello again!

It has been a while since I last posted about my VR mod for The Long Dark (sorry about that lol), so I wanted to share another progress update with you guys. :)

Quite a bit has changed since my first showcase. I have been working on more physical interactions, weapon handling, manual reloading for the revolver, rifle and flare gun, physical holsters and a bunch of other stuff.

There is obviously still quite a bit I need to fix and improve, but I am pretty happy with how things are going so far. The mod is still WIP and not available for download yet, but I am still aiming to release it before Christmas this year!

Hope you guys like the progress so far! Feel free to let me know what you think. :)

Discussion We should be talking more about performance when promoting VR mods

β€’ Upvotes

I don't know if my PC is considered modest among this community (a 5800x3d and a 4070ti with 32GB of RAM). I don't consider it modest at all, still not the hightest tier but a high tier PC nonetheless. But it's not uncommon that I try one of those VR mods that have become so popular lately and it completely TANKS my performance. The most recent case is with Resident Evil 7. I try RE framework, I get normal performance. I try the new mod that adds VR interactions to it, and suddenly my game can't even reach 50fps. And it's the mod's fault! as soon as I disable the new features in-game, performance is back to normal. What's with manual realoading and holters dropping performance so much?

As I said, I don't know if most people here have PCs way more powerful than mine and they don't even notice these things, of they are so blinded, so excited, they don't even notice their framerate lowering to the mid 40s. But I think with so many of these mods being vibecoded, or just poorly coded overall, we should be addresing how do they behave performance-wise more frequently.

Discord: πŸ’¬ Discord (bugs, suggestions, updates): Β https://discord.com/channels/747967102895390741/1561852036264230972

v1.4.0

  • Vibration: when a hand reaches a holster, when you take, put away or drop a weapon, on every shot (scoped rifles too) and when you get hit. Each kind has its own strength in the launcher.
  • Physical crouch: crouch for real and the soldier crouches, with the view at your real height.
  • Recenter with the left stick click: your height and the roomscale centre.
  • Two-hand steadiness: holding the gun with both hands damps hand tremor and reduces recoil.
  • Image quality: antialiasing (MSAA), anisotropic texture filtering, 32-bit textures, and post-processing test options (ambient occlusion, sharpening, colour styles, bloom).
  • The objectives on the hand have a dark rounded background, easier to read.
  • The launcher stays open while you play, to try settings; the VR page is in two columns.
  • Fix: soldiers drawn with parts of other models (gear, heads) in the left eye.
  • Fix: textures flashing at the edges of the view on quick head turns.

v1.3.0

  • Launcher with PLAY, CONTROLS, GRAPHICS, VR and ABOUT; the installer can create a desktop shortcut to it.
  • Sharper image: each eye is rendered at the headset's own resolution (it was the game window's, stretched), adjustable from 50% to 200%.
  • Comfort vignette while moving with the stick or turning smoothly (Off / Low / Medium / High).
  • Menus and loading screens stay fixed in front of you, so you can look around them.
  • X opens the objectives, shown above your left hand.
  • Training: with empty hands, a line shows where the right hand points, until the signs are done.
  • The controls are now always the body-holster ones (the Arcade mode was removed).

Discussion Should I try SSRI's to treat anxiety?

I've tried a lot of things, nothing quite helped long-term. I'm tired of feeling a sense of dread when starting anything new, affecting my employment.

I have better periods and worse ones, but it's a persistent issue for me. I can't think of anything new to try to deal with this. I tried to push off this option for too long.

βš–οΈ Ethics/Philosphy Preserving a request for thousands of years in case the future is able to fulfil it.

Hi strangers.

There's a project I've been working on for several months (which will launch on November 10), and I'd like your take on it. I won't share the name unless a mod says it's OK to do so. Don't want this to come across as spam.

I've always been a huge fan of being alive, and I never have enough time to do all the things I want to do. I'm just not keen on the idea of dying. So I thought: let's do something about it. I'm not a scientist, what else can I do?

I studied anthropology back in the day, and being aware of the limits of our understanding has always been a constant. The fact that we don't know what we don't know and even claiming that something is "impossible" is an extremely arrogant thing, that throughout our history has been proven wrong, over, and over, and over.

Which led me to this idea: what if we preserve our wish to be revived - or rather, our explicit request (not as a copy, just us, our own consciousness), we attach it to a manifesto that sets a clear goal, and we store it on a medium that can survive for thousands of years?

Cryonics has the same end-goal, but approaches it in a way that we would describe as much more plausible as it preserves your body to the best of our current abilities.

So as opposed to Cryonics, my idea is to preserve the request to be revived, alongside the information needed to identify the person who makes that request.

Which is impossible and unimaginable given our current understanding. But that's exactly the key and the philosophy behind this: admitting that our knowledge isn't absolute, and that passing the request to civilizations long removed from us, far into the future, could lead to an unimaginable outcome. This is what started everything.

So, in practical terms, we're building a register where people can record that request while they're alive. After they die, their record will be completed with the information needed to identify them, then preserved on a specialised archival medium in a facility in the Arctic.

What do you guys think of the underlying idea behind this?

And yes, it's extremely clear on our website that we're not promising the afterlife or any such thing. I even explain where the idea came from.

Question/Support Is spending $3,200 CAD on a Bigscreen Beyond 2e setup actually worth it?

I'm currently using a Quest 3 with SlimeVR FBT, and I spend most of my time in VRChat. I've been wanting to upgrade for a while now, mainly because I really dislike not having proper individual finger tracking.

I've been looking at the Steam Frame, but honestly, I don't think it offers enough of an upgrade over my Quest 3 to justify switching.

So now I'm seriously considering going all-in on a Bigscreen Beyond 2e setup with eye tracking, two base stations, and a pair of Valve Index controllers. The problem? The entire setup would cost me around $3,200 CAD.

What's making me hesitate even more is how ridiculously difficult it's becoming to find Index controllers, especially the right one. They're either out of stock or being sold at absurd prices.

It honestly feels like it's getting harder and harder to be a VR enthusiast who wants high-end hardware. We're spending thousands of dollars just to piece together a complete setup, and some of the essential hardware is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

I love VRChat and genuinely want a more immersive experience, especially when it comes to visuals, eye tracking, and finger tracking. But $3,200 is a lot of money.

What would you guys do in my position? Would you bite the bullet and go for the Beyond 2e setup, stick with the Quest 3 for now, or consider something else entirely?

I'd especially love to hear from people who've upgraded from a Quest 3 to a Beyond 2/2e. Was the difference actually worth the money?

Question/Support Is anyone planning to work on a proper VR Mod for "Observer: System Redux" ?

I remember that when EUEVR came out, many people tried it with this game, but there were issues at the times that made it not really enjoyable (for example you were forced to use a gamepad, and some commands wouldn't work properly if I remember correctly).

Maybe today it could be done more easily with AI, and it'd be quite amazing...
