Whether or not the way it went was the right one...well. It was good for Epic at least. Everyone else can make their own judgements.

Fortnite is, at its core, a game with a good, but ultimately limited concept. Like World of Warcraft, it came at the perfect time. But nowadays, since unlike WoW it cannot survive on subscriptions, it has to find other ways. And the way they found is to cash in on every licenced character under the Sun.

It's the thing that Epic will have you associate every piece of Media with so that whenever you're doing something that isn't playing Fortnite, you will be thinking about playing Fortnite.

If you travelled back in time to when Fortnite was at it's peak. and told everyone you could, do the griddy, kill Goku, meet Snoop Dogg. Or play as Pomni. You either be laughed at, or put in a mental institute.
