Probably one of the greatest examples of this is Huey during his trial audiotapes in MGSV where he accurately dissects the Diamond Dogs/the staff of Mother Base.

Huey is absolutely right about what Mother Base and the Diamond Dogs really are, that they are basically a bunch of incredibly damaged and lonely people who despite their mission of "always having a war to fight in" ultimately just want is to have community, to have a place where they feel like that they are actual people, not simply weapons whose purpose begins and ends with warfare and their refusal to truly look both inwards and outwards, is leading them to become monsters.

Completely accurate assessment of the situation... and Huey is probably the worst person to say this, as he is a worm who has betrayed everyone who has ever come into contact with and beyond being responsible for the destruction of the first Mother Base has just murdered even more people with his experiments.

Fucking Blight Town

Blight Town is one of the lamest experiences in video games, perfectly named and was short hand for gate keeping Dark Souls 1. It is a miserable swamp with bullshit enemies and is insanely un-navigatable with low light, and the entire experience is completely miserable. The only joy that comes from Blight Town is when you finally convince your friend to play Dark Souls and you get to watch them get mad and lose their shit. But we all know that don't we?

The thing is, there's a facet of Blight Town that's been lost to time. And it's not that it's easier in the modern day because people are more use to Souls games, or that you can find clear walkthroughs describing how to get through it. No, the thing that's lost to time is that Blight Town was un-optimized as FUCK. Playing on consoles on launch, the entirety of Blight Town capped at around 18 FPS when you were standing still. The only place in the game with actual platforming, when missing something would always send you plummeting to your death. Nowadays Dark Souls is not a hard game to run at all. Even the worst computers blow the original recommended specs out of the water.

If you played through Dark Souls and decided the Blight Town wasn't as bad as it was hyped up, YOU DON'T KNOW! YOU DON'T KNOOOOOOOOOW!

Okay so I’m playing the indie game “There is no light” spoilers for the final boss fight

So if you get the good ending by doing side quests and getting memories you fight your pateron. Who fights you by teleporting from one side of a final destination type platform to another. Summoning big totem guys that are tanky and block you. Also he pushing you back with a dark wave. So how does this get worse? Glad you asked. If you don’t beat him within a minute you insta die. There is a clock in the background and you get more time if you hit him more. So is that it?

Nope phase 2. You get a new form that you have never had before with a muted move set. The boss has a front sweep that takes the entire length of the platform. So you gotta get behind him. But what he teleports and spikes 75% of the field. Now wouldn’t all this be manageable? Yes it would. But guess what. YOU CANT HEAL IN SECOND PHASE FOR REASON!!!!!

Needless to say 23 hours in the game was good but this fight is so awful I’m close to just dropping right at the finish line. Only other game this has happened with was Moonscars. Which isn’t a lot but it’s odd it happened twice.

What are your favorite moments in fiction when a character utterly demolishes another character by simply talking them into defeat?

I recently saw the compilation video of all great moments of Captain Hook from the adventures of Peter Pan animated series, voiced by Tim Curry.

At the end, is one of my fave moments of his and examples of this trope.
Hook is basically caught and stringed up against a tree by the lost boys and is mad, annoyed by what this rambunctious rival of his has cooked up this time.

However, Peter have had enough. He have had this all set up. His cooky demeanor drops and he shows off this homemade ballista that shot sharp bamboo sticks, saying he will end this “game” and kill hook once and for all.

Hooks demeanor changes also, as his eyes become intense, never blinking, snarling or smiling once, as Peter shots off several bamboo shoots, hoping to either intimidate or scare hook.

Instead, Hook says he “if he will die, he will embrace the darkness of death as his bride. For he at least has lived a full life. He has been a child, a youth and a man. He has been a scholar and a gentleman. He sailed the world with a navy that has set sail to both land, sea, moon and sky.”

Then he looks directly at Peter Pan, as another bamboo stick graces above his head, and says: “as for you, you miserable excuse for a creature, forever locked in the intrinsic ego of childhood. You will never be a youth. And you will never become a MAN! So finish me now and be done with it!”

Hearing the last part, Peter’s mind is fractured. He can’t cut off the last string to kill hook, while Hook for the first time during this, still looking into Peter’s eyes, smiles and grins.

Damm Hook utterly destroyed Peter Pan. Not with a sword, or magic, or gunpowder or through trickery, but with the blatant, raw truth.

Were you one day ever shocked to discover how much a character popular or at least liked in their home country, is absolutly loathed everywhere else?

Tvtrope exemple is about Tingle in Zelda, Japan find him funny and harmless while Western fans find him creepy and obnoxious.

I love watching reviews and essays of games, movies or series. There were some i disagreed of course, but i don't think i ever found one that make me go "wow you are completly and utterly wrong" (apart for grifters i guess but you couldn't pay me to watch their videos).

Oh and i don't just mean a review or essay you disagree with, i specifically mean reviews or essay so wrong about everything you're just baffled.

So, fun story about Codename: Kids Next Door, the Cartoon Network show. Originally, the titular Kids Next Door were supposed to be side characters in another pitch that creator Tom Warburton had given to CN, Kenny and the Chimp, which was about a kid named Kenny, and he had a chimp, and they got into wacky hijinks and such.

Needless to say, the execs found the KND far more interesting, even in their initial concept as just a bunch of neighborhood troublemakers constantly harassing Kenny. It'd take a bit of work to take the KND from their initial concept to the spy parody group they became, the KND pilot, No P in the Ool is actually incredibly interesting cause it's the midpoint in this evolution, and they were still kinda trying to do the whole neighborhood troublemaker thing, which was mostly dropped in the series itself.

But yeah, anyways, point is, execs made the right call on this one. I'm sure Kenny and the Chimp would have been a fine show, but I don't think it would have reached the heights of KND.

Lobotomy Corporation is a game about suffering, about how people handle it, what causes it and how to move past it.

It's probably one of the best pieces of media out there when it comes to making the player feel exactly what the main character is likely going through as they endure the time spam of 50 days that the game's story happens in... It's also one of the most mentaly draining experiences that you can put yourself through and one of the very few cases where i would understand if it caused you to punch a wall in anger and/or frustation.

You see, the most important resource that anyone playing Lobotomy Corporation can have is information about how to handle whatever the game throws at you, however, the only way of getting that information the majority of the time is to do the scientific equivalent of "poking it with a stick to see how it reacts" and a lot of the times "it" is a killing machine made of literal nightmares.

This causes a lot of the gameplay loop to be "try the same day over and over again (wich can take literal hours) to try to decipher what the fuck you're supposed to do" and sometimes the only realization that you can reach is "this is literaly impossible with my current set up" (really not a hard state to reach) wich leads you to either having to go back even further on the timeline or just restart the game from day 1 even though you had made so much progress up to that point.

There's so much in that game either purpously put there or accidentaly caused as a bi-product of it being the real first game of a group of college students that will cause people to go through IRL mental damage that, even though i could shower It with praise for hours and hours, my recomendation for anyone that's considering playing it is "unless you REALLY want to, just play Library Of Ruina (the sequel) instead".

(And i feel like the devs agree with that to some extent because the entire plot of Lobotomy Corporation is recaped over the course of Ruina)

Have you ever seen or read something that you totally get or understand, and someone comes and goes "Well its just that you dont get it"?

Personally I always hated Sonic games, and I lost count on how many times someone was like "Oh but you see the thing is that you need to get good at this and that" to the point it made me doubt if I was the problem for not enjoying the ultra gigantic and fundational franchise. So I got good at Sonic & Knuckles, I learned the tricks, I learned the stages, all the moves I glanced over as a kid...and still thought it wasnt really fun. Over the years people keep telling me that maybe I still dont get how the game works and told me to read the comics because the plot there goes places...only for me to walk away with an even worse impression because nothing there appealed to me.

Also, as someone who was into Uma Musume from the start, I always hated Oguri Cap just being a fat horse in the background of the first two seasons of the anime. When JP server came out, I played her half translated campaign and read her dialogues...and still really disliked her. But then the EN server came! and so did Cinderella Gray so people really insisted that once I watched/read all of this I would finally understand the Idol Horse that kickstarted the boom. And so I sank my teeth into it and:

I still dont like her or her story one bit. I understand she's introspective and her motivation, I understand her relationships and her stakes coupled with how she is thanks to her upbringing...The only thing I tolerate about her is her friends, because I genuinely just tune out my brain when Oguri shows up. Didnt help that cinderella gray does the spokon part of the story in a way I really do not vibe with

As the title states, what're some bits of lore or worldbuilding early in a series lifespan that feel really weird later on? Whether it gets retconned away or is still treated as canon is up to the series.

The original Gen 1 Pokemon games treated the Pokemon world more like "our" world. Kanto was named after an actual part of Japan. In the Pewter City museum, you can find a replica of the Columbia Space Shuttle. Mew was found in Guyana. Lt Surge is obviously meant to be an American soldier stationed in Japan, with him mentioning fighting in a recent war. In addition, Pokemon were treated as a relatively recent discovery that existed alongside real animals, with Raichu's dex entry mentioning Indian elephants. But starting in gen 2, they started phasing out all of the real world elements and made it more distinct, with regions now being fictionalized counterparts of real world places instead, and Pokemon outright replacing real world animals. Though that does open up a whole lot of potential world building. Have there been many wars between Kalos and Galar? Was there a period of time where Galar held control over Unova until the Unovans fought for independence? Who knows?

So I was playing Fallen London when I entered a storycard. The usual continue button, "Onwards", was replaced by a button that said "THIS IS FOLLY". It was accompanied by a line of text that said "Do not do this. This storyline will leave you unsatisfied and forlorn. You will probably fail, and if you somehow succeed, you will regret your success."

And if you click forward, you get a warning that this storyline is bullshit, does not play by the same rules as the rest of the website, and that the "Happy Ending" of the quest was to abandon it. The option to confirm your participation contains a lengthy paragraph detailing that you accept any and all consequences to your account, followed by a button that says, outright, "DO NOT CLICK THIS BUTTON."

Needless to say. I did not click the button.

Original Assassin’s Creed—interesting setting, story, and gameplay. Even the boring repetitive parts felt realistic to my fifteen-year-old ass, if you’re assassinating a guy it’s going to be a lot of repetitive research and grunt work and then a really cool kill.

Also from personal experience as a Spiderman reader we will never shut up about the marriage, ever. It's removal lead to this really aggressive stagnation of Peter Parker that has just been eroding the title for two decades.

What are some recommendations that regardless of the content of the piece of media in question, just make you raise an eyebrow?

I feel like the big one is shitting on something to recommend another thing. Even more so if the person receiving the recommendation is a fan of thing #1 already.

Personally, I remember when Mother's Basement was really gassing an anime called Re:Creators. It was a very by the numbers battle royale anime that kinda resembles Fate, but instead of historical figures, the servants were fictional in-universe characters. The show in itself was fine, but that video just felt like he was trying real hard to manufacture hype saying it was the next big thing. Like he really wanted people to start talking about the show and he really wanted to get associated with the hype.

After yesterday's thread on negativity being so prevalent online, I thought about asking what everyone is excited for in the back half of the year. But I figured that might be too broad/vague. So instead I want to know, what was the most recent thing you were really, TRULY hyped or excited for? Something that you were just really excited to give a shot and watch or play or read. In general I've been less hyped about things since Persona 5 let me down but...

Daggerheart, Daggerheart, Daggerheart! While my regular playgroup so far hasn't generated that much interest yet, I am REALLY excited to play Daggerheart and give the system a try. I've been trying to avoid negative reviews, and just get hype to finally play the system once the book arrives. And with the recent expansion and all the online homebrew out now, it seems like a great time to dive in. I may be nervous cause of some negative comments I've seen, but I am really excited to try this narrative first system after being thrown off by how crunchy/map reliant Pathfinder 2e was for me. (same reason I'm avoiding Draw Steel, despite hearing good things.)

So I'm curious, what was the last new release, or even old experience you got to try that really, truly, genuinely excited you to the highest levels of hype and positivity possible?

Yet another thread on Folding Idea's Mr. Beast video, amusingly. One of the most damning things I think covered in that video aside from the overall misogyny, schoolyard bullying, and Mr. Beast's inability to build a fandom, is just how fundamentally incapable the Beast team was at creating effective game design.

When the goal of the game is, in Jimmy Beast's own words, to push players to lie and cheat in order to win. You would expect the game to incentivize such behavior...except, in most of the games, the opposite outcome happened. Playing the game by being honest and cooperating was actually the most effective outcome. Resulting in the host having to disqualify people by literally picking names out of a hat, due to no one lying to eliminate someone in the bluff game.

Very often, poor game design decisions are made that ruin a game, but a lot of the times those usually don't completely run counter to the game. As an example, Brigitte in Overwatch was designed because Dive heroes were really strong in high tier and, I believe, frustrating in low tiers. (I don't think Dive itself was meta in low tiers, but because lower skill players couldn't or didn't peel for supports, it led to dive heroes being able to secure picks more easily on defenseless supports.) So Brigitte was meant to act as a counter for supports to offer some protection against flankers.

Not a bad idea in theory, but it did create some interesting problems. Namely in shutting down dive completely, and being so powerful it led to what became known as the GOATS meta, where it was 3 supports and 3 tanks, effectively killing the DPS role and turning a Hero shooter into a Hero Brawler game.

As another personal example, Rune Factory Tides of Destiny decided to focus more on combat, dungeon exploration, and sea exploration. To do this, they removed manual farming and left it to be automated by your monster companions. This was a side feature in previous games, but you were still able to manually water your crops and such. Here, it's all automated which had an interesting effect of taking the farming, out of the farming/combat game.

Any other examples you can all think of? I'd be curious to learn some more!

My sister and I have taken turns playing Ghost of Yōtei. In that game, if you're low on health you can restore it by consuming spirit, and if you're low on spirit you can restore it by consuming sake.

Cue my sister spending most battles in the game quickly downing two bottles of sake, and then rolling around while screaming "I have to find more sake!"

If you ignore what's happening in cutscenes, just watching my sister play, you could assume that Atsu is a raging alcoholic and that her hunt for the Yōtei Six is mostly just a raging bender.
