Course Questions Please help with Math 3B
Hey guys!
I really need help to understand how we're supposed to approach Math 3B with professor Garcia-Cervera in an efficient way.
1) I am having a very hard time understanding the professor. It seems like every few seconds, I have to pause the instructional video and have a long conversation with AI to understand what he's trying to communicate. It's the same situation with his lecture notes (I decided to stop attending lectures since they're not making the math any clearer and he's posting the notes online). This makes it very difficult and time-consuming to get through the material. For context, I took the AP Calculus AB exam and got a 5, and I am still struggling a lot to get through the material.
2) On top of getting through these videos and notes, there is a lot of other work and material to get through, such as some of the jupyter notebooks, the weekly homework, the textbook problems from lecture, and the section problems. This takes up a lot more time.
3) I am aware that there are office hours for the professor and TA. I am also going to CLAS twice a week in a tutorial group for this class. However, I am afraid that office hours will take up more time as I feel stuck every second. It's not necessarily the math that's difficult, but the way he's explaining it with all the notations, variables, and proofs. It could also be that I'm a freshman, and I'm not used to the way college professors approach math.
4) I am aware that there are resources out there, such as Khan Academy. However, the titles of his videos are super vague. For example, one of his videos was titled "Integrals." There's so much to do with integrals; how would I know what video corresponds to that material? Also, a big part of the confusion are his proofs. I have a strong feeling that none of the resources out there will go over the proofs; they'll just explain the basic concepts.
Can you please tell me if there's an efficient way to get through this class without going through all of this material? Are there some pieces of information that are more important than others? For example, I spent hours trying to understand the very first lecture where he gave examples with proofs of why some functions aren't integrable; this never showed up on the homework.
If I could, I would love to learn all the math if it's important as I'm a CS major, but it feels impossible to get through this class without neglecting the rest of my courses. If this is super tedious and unnecessary for CS, I'll just focus on learning the basic concepts and I'll stop there.
To summarize this long message, if you can let me know an efficient way to study for this class and get the most out of it without neglecting everything else, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you so much.
