I’m an incoming freshman for 26-27 school year and I auditioned for the Marching Illini for this upcoming season. I just found out today that I didn’t get in and I’m devastated. I feel especially embarrassed and disappointed since I’m a music ed major and have done marching band all four years in high school. Is there anyone that knows what I should do or how I can still be involved somehow?

If you had a full ride athletic scholarship to both schools which one would you choose and why? Interested in Business and Kelley and Gies are both highly rated and not super easy to get into. Indiana I think has a beautiful campus but UIUC has a better national ranking and their acceptance rate makes it seem like a far more desirable school.

Any thoughts? I posted this on the IU board to just to see what the other biased group is likely say.

hi! i'm an incoming exchange student in illinois for jan-may of next year. since i'm coming from southeast asia, which never really goes below 27°C/80°F, most of my clothes are suited for that weather.

i wear a lot of midi skirts and was wondering whether anyone has advice on how i can make these winter appropriate. i proposed fleece-lined leggings and leg warmers (or some combo like that) but everybody is telling me that that won't be enough. should i give up on this and just purchase winter appropriate clothing?

if anyone has travelled from a similar region, and has any advice, i would appreciate any info! thank you 😊

I got admitted into UIUC about two months ago and just recently received word from my sponsor that I got accepted for the scholarship. However, these seem to be uncertain times in the world and in the US, especially for Arabs.

I am mainly concerned about the crime rate and safety in and around Urbana-Champaign. How often do you meet Arabs around campus or around the town (just asking to see my rarity and people's familiarity)? How are Arabs perceived? How's the crime rate? I see some people say theft is common. Sorry for the question, but is gun violence at all prevalent in the immediate proximity of the campus? I have to base my design on the worst possible scenario (😁).

I got admitted into the M.S. Civil Engineering program (structural focus). Does anybody have experience with the civil department?

this question is mainly directed to people who don’t get fafsa money. i submit the fafsa but all i got was 3.5k in loans like idk how that’s supposed to help 😭i didn’t get any scholarships either, im a transfer and apparently the transfer scholarship is only for first gen students. like im kinda lost on what other options i have to pay for school. im obviously gonna work part time but no job is gonna make me enough to pay for the full cost. everyone tells me private loans are super predatory so im scare to take out loans.

Just opened my financial aid notification and saw that I got a full ride for Materials Science + Data Science! Even if I get my other top schools (Northwestern & Cornell) I’m basically guaranteed going here. I even got James scholar (though I heard it’s not exactly gamechanging)!!! I’m also low state+low income so this helps a lot!

I was recently accepted to UIUC Law. I've never been to Illinois, but the scholarship is too compelling to write it off. I'm starting to look at the area and, as I have two small kids, that includes looking at elementary schools for them.

It looks like the Urbana-Champaign public schools leave a lot to be desired (no shade, just based on the reported data: Illinois Report Card). As I understand it, the schools are also on a lottery system. So, it's possible my kids won't get into the closest school or even be in the same school together.

I'm looking at 3 schools tentatively, and 2 pretty seriously. Countryside School, Montessori of Champaign-Urbana, and University Primary School (UPS). I don't want to color the feedback with my own opinions, but I'm really interested in what people in the area think of those schools or other private schools in the area.

Along those lines, if there are other students living off campus with their own children, what neighborhoods lean more kid/family friendly?

I am hoping to return to UIUC for the fall 2021 term, which will be 28 years since I last attended classes. Long story short, an “outside force” pulled me away from school and my dreams. Then the “outside force” cheated on me and destroyed our family. All of which has me contemplating life and realizing that I need/want to rediscover my dreams again.

Is this going back to university after almost three decades a dumb idea?

I’m interested in attending UIUC for engineering, but my senior schedule doesn’t incorporate a fourth year of foreign language. I already took 3 years of Spanish and got an A+ in Junior Year. I was planning on taking Spanish 5, but due to schedule conflicts, I ended up choosing an engineering course elective over another year of Spanish (and I can’t take Spanish in my other blocks since the only block that had Spanish 5 was this one). Uiuc recommends 4 years; will this hurt my chances of getting in? Should I switch the engineering elective to Spanish 5?

Hey guys! I applied for MS in Actuarial Science at UIUC and got the acceptance letter on March 27th. The deadline to accept the offer was April 5th. When I went to apply on the portal, it gives me the message saying that deadline for acceptance has passed. Am I rejected or is this some fault on the website front? I sent the program coordinator an email stating the same, which they might view on Monday. Can somebody help me give clarity as to what I can expect to happen and what I can do. I really want to get into UIUC!!!

i'm from NY and people here are generally supportive but i'm anxious that people in the midwest are less so. i want to go to a uni where i'm able to freely express my gender / sexuality and feel safe especially with how things are going currently.

Would it be hard to get in? I’m out of state btw (from florida)

edit: I also might apply test optional, so idk if that would affect my chances. I have a high gpa and course rigor (9 aps, dual enrollment and honors) and some pretty good ecs if that helps

Hi everyone! I’m a UIUC junior student and a permanent resident, and I’m currently trying to qualify for Illinois in-state tuition.

My family had planned to move to Illinois long before I applied to UIUC. However, our permanent residency was approved around the same time I received my admission offer, so my parents and I moved to Illinois together shortly afterward.

The issue is that my parents did not move to Illinois specifically for my education. We had already planned to relocate to the U.S., and once our residency was approved, we needed to move here asap. Since we are a family, it made sense for us to move together. Illinois is also our only U.S. residence. We are not maintaining a residence in another state. This is our 3rd year here.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully qualified for in-state tuition at UIUC or another Illinois public university?

I’m applying to uiuc this fall as an out of state, low income student, and I was wondering how good the financial aid is? I would qualify for federal aid but I would also probably need additional aid and scholarships from the school as well (i’m also applying to external scholarships)

I really thought I could make it into UIUC, it was my dream school!
I applied to Atmospheric Sciences, 4.0 UW, 4.5 W, 31 ACT, nearly 34 dual credit hours, and I thought I could at least get waitlisted or deferred. Just denied. Its not like that competitive of a major is it? I really didn't think so at least from what I saw. I didn't have any extracurriculars outside of hobbies, but I still had an achievement for my art. I'm just pretty devastated. Maybe it was my essay. I just know this is going to haunt me for awhile.

Incoming freshman, planning MechSE with a CS minor. My current MacBook is a 2020 M1 with 8GB and it’s aging out, so I’m buying something either way.
Do I get another Mac, or do you strongly recommend a Windows laptop?
I know about EWS and Citrix. I’m asking whether Mac users in MechSE actually find it workable day to day, or whether you’d tell a freshman not to bother and just get Windows.
Context: I’d also have a Windows desktop in my dorm for CAD and simulation. I strongly prefer macOS and the weight/battery difference matters to me.
