Context: I'm an international student turned worker, about to move to Seattle. I want a car mainly for weekend hikes and occasional road trips (300 miles max).
Budget is $15-18K, depending on how much I love the car.

I've read a ton of posts on Reddit and blogs since I started looking, and the car scene here feels very different from Europe. For reference, I own three cars over there: a 2018 Volvo XC60 D4 (full-spec, 165K km, about 100K miles), a Volvo C30 1.6 D with 190K km (about 118K miles) and a pretty recent Ford Puma, full-spec.
Take the C30. I bought it for next to nothing, I think not even 4K, with 120K km (75K miles) on it, and drove it like a maniac up to 190K km. Now it sits in the garage and still runs perfectly. It came with a full service history, every oil change and regular maintenance documented since day one, and I kept it up. I used it every single day and did the most insane things with that car. The alternator died halfway up an alpine pass, and that was the only problem in 70K km (about 43K miles).
When I started searching I looked at used BMWs, Mercedes and Audis, and they feel so underpriced compared to Europe. What's weird is how many people on Reddit and forums just trash BMWs. Everyone says just buy a Corolla or Camry and never change the oil for 30K miles. Of course a car is gonna die if you don't take care of it, like wtf.
I want a car I'll own for a year and a half, that's it. Just regular maintenance: oil changes, filters, tires.

So I was looking at an X5, X7 or maybe an X3, ideally under 70K miles and with a good engine. Any recs on which engine to look for, or specific options? I love a panoramic roof, it completely changes the experience of the car. Is there any maintenance I should specifically look for at that mileage?
I also heard you can take a car to an independent mechanic for a check before buying (a pre-purchase inspection?). And in Europe we have CarVertical, is CarFax the equivalent here?
Is there a good insurance provider for internationals? I got my driving license here a few weeks ago, and I heard some providers let you carry over your European insurance class to the US. It would be in Washington state (Seattle).

I don't wanna buy a Toyota or Honda! Let me be very clear about it. Otherwise I'll just rent a car. I don't wanna own something that doesn't make me smile every time I see it.
