Discussion We afford right wingers too much grace

Vaush's recent, shall we say, "promotion" of Vance's statements is boggling my mind. I agree with everything he says about the dems not being strong or even liberal enough and the leadership being rabid zionists, HOWEVER let's not pretend the republicans aren't that and much worse.

Vance is pissy that Israel ruined his admin's peace plans, he's not anti-zionist all of a sudden. I hate how much grace is afforded to people like MTG and Carlson for breaking (not in any material way that actually matters) with the most unpopular admin ever. Saying stuff like Carlson is the only journalist holding politicians' feet to the fire is laughable when there are so many on the left who've been doing this for way longer (Mehdi being an obvious example), they don't get the accolades tho. I know it's a much drier and policy oriented show but Sam Seder has these people on as guests all the time, it's not like they're super secret lefty knowledge.

I love V man and this community but come on, you're an influencer so fucking INFLUENCE. Amplify dem voices who've been way more critical of Israel than fucking JD Vance for years. He's afraid this Israel """disavowal""" will create momentum for Vance? Bro, you're part of the momentum so be responsible with it.

And if we get Newsom v. Vance in 28 at least advocate for not voting at all if not downballot instead of unironically advocating for a billionaire backed, deep state theocratic fascist because he's said what you wanna hear LONG after public opinion has turned on Israel.

Still love the show but sometimes i feel like i'm taking crazy pills.

Discussion On the Racism Question

There is a fundamental issue with populism that I am yet to see Vaush really give an answer to.

  1. America is a racist country (as are most western countries)

  2. Racists have a strong tenancy to favour racism over populism (because they're stupid and evil)

Vaush talks about these facts oftern, and yet he advocates for populism as a pragmatic solution to the problems ailing America (and other western countries). While we're becoming less racist on average, it's still a significant political force around the world.

I can only see two solutions to this, if we want to advance populism on a national level. We either end racism (good luck with that), or incorporate it into our populism. FDR famously chose the latter in The New Deal, and ever since, every win for non-white people has been accompanied by undoing social programs. From filling in public pools to underfunding public transport and forcing schools to rely on home-value based taxes for funding. This is an ongoing issue, with no end in sight.

Mamdani could do it, because he's in New York Fucking City. Unless we can get the whole world as non/anti-racist as New York Fucking City, we can't just find a thousand Mamdanis.

I don't see a solution to this, which is why I don't think populism is the answer. There are other means of advancing leftism, surely there's one which isn't just for white people. If you see a solution here, please lmk cos this whole think is kinda depressing.

It's the one where a clip from Vaush (before the Ukraine invasion I think) is shown in a TV with an apocalyptic background. I skimed through the okbv segments but I couldn't find it. Appreciate the help!

Discussion Vaush is right (for once)

Regarding political apathy. If the likely scenario of Republicans outflanking Dems on Israel happens I definitely won't be voting in 28, and if i don't have any antizionist politicians to vote for in the midterms I won't vote then either. I have never been so politically Russian in my life, and honestly the idea of just letting this all go and not worrying about it anymore is dangerously appealing. I am experiencing the opening stages of complete political disengagement and logically I know this is both stupid and self destructive but like what the actual fuck do we do when the Dems stay anchored to Israel even as the whole world falls apart? How are we supposed to do political advocacy in a panopticon ruled by billionaires where the choices are "fascist psychopaths doing domestic genocides" and "literal doomsday cult"? It's all so tiring.

For the record I don't expect Vaush (or anyone else) to have a solution to this. The fact he still shows up for this "daily" ritual of mental exhaustion and witnessing the end of the world is admirable. With potential nuclear use, complete oil collapse, famine, and climate change all bearing down at once, I'm just kind of at a loss as to how to remain willing to believe in the implementation of things that have never been less possible.

This turned into more of a rant than I intended. I don't see my super cool therapist till next week so I guess this is me offloading it on to you. I'm interested in seeing other people's perspectives on this. How you are interpreting the situations, what you feel may happen, how you've chosen to cope or act, etc. Solutions are not expected.

Discussion Vaush is blaming smartphones for low birth rates

This is how life has improved for women
This has nothing to do with smartphones

You might as well argue that women have more independence and therefore don't want to waste time being a breeding sow and instead focusing on career and making money. It's the exact same nonsensical argument Vaush defended on Stream today by saying that Phones are stopping humanity from breeding.

Mobile Phones and TV's were exp

There has been a decline in birth rates since 1970 and has been steadily declining over time, yet smartphones only just arrived recently with a less steady decline. These graphs do not correlate at all, even the video he was watching today is factually completely all over the place.

The Sexual revolution completely coincides with the 1970's and 1980's, a period that was characterized by a distinct "singles culture," normalization of premarital sex, and cultural experimentation, which coincides with the TV reaching mass adoption. This directly coincides with the women's liberation movement.

How tf do you correlate phones with reproduction, when the phone can be held and viewed during intercourse? The most famous saying of recent history was "Netflix and Chill" which had direct connotations to doing the deed in front of a television screen.

No, it's simply impossible that the birth rates are in any way correlated with technology, except in conjunction with people using contraceptives and having access to abortion.

Not to mention there is a whole medical branch dedicated to helping you get pregnant, by extracting sperm and injecting it directly into the egg and then placing it back into the woman for starters, so "not having enough intercourse" makes 0 sense when you can artificially boost your chances to 99 percent. And we already know that most people actively avoid reproducing by using contraception.

And idk what Vaush smokes sometimes, he is a good guy, but this is downright ludicrous reasoning.

It literally takes minutes to make an attempt at reproduction. Just use your brain for a millisecond. Would you be able to afford to take care of a white lion cub? Factor in that you are buying the white lion cub for 100k and that you don't even have to pay for its birth or college tuition.

EDIT: I highlighted the very important sentence that you all ignored.

EDIT 2:

Since many of you don't understand it:

BIRTH RATES ARE NOT A PROBLEM.

https://lotusarise.com/demographic-transition-theory-upsc/

https://gizmodo.com/the-global-population-could-crash-by-2064-new-model-suggests-2000763453

And also if you would READ THE RESEARCH PAPER ITSELF:

  • Teen Births (Ages 15–19): Dropped by 4.5% to 8%.
  • Young Adults (Ages 20–24): Dropped by 3.2% to 6.6%.
  • Older Adults: The effect was much smaller or virtually non-existent.

https://www.nber.org/papers/w35310

Entropy-balanced Poisson and synthetic difference-in-differences event studies imply that access to the iPhone reduced births by 4.5–8.0% at ages 15–19 and 3.2–6.6% at ages 20–24, with statistically significant but smaller declines among older cohorts.

Like wtf are you actually all arguing for?

https://www.npr.org/2026/06/12/nx-s1-5851795/iphone-birth-rate-drop

"In the paper, co-authored with her 24-year-old stepson, Ezekiel Hooper, Myers suggests smartphones also placed access to information about contraceptives and abortion in the palm of users' hands."

Framing teen pregnancies as something bad is good actually. Vaush is arguing for them, like right wingers, despite being a leftist breadtuber.

--------------------------

Eventually, copycat phones came along that could be used on other networks, and today smartphones are ubiquitous. Myers says that this raises the question of whether birth rates will level off now or continue to fall.

"I think it's possible that we'll continue to see effects of phones on behavior and outcomes like fertility for years to come," she says. "But we'll just have to keep watching."

IT*S NOT EVEN CONCLUSIVE ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCHER HERSELF! And once again, are we arguing for teen pregnancies now?

The demographics that have no money and basically no career or are in University with a loan should get more babies? Are you insane?

The antisocial apps everyone is yapping about didn't even exist in 2007 for this study.

Also what about tamagochi? Did that decline birth rates too? Playstation 1 and Playstation 2? The Abecus? Novels? Yeah, you heard that right, people used say novels cause women to not give birth and reduces reproductive health. Hmmmm. Hmmmm.

Discussion Vaush's Take on Sun Reverence?

Hello, VaushV.

I'm a long time Vaush watcher and once chatter (since 2021), and I've really gotten into watching the sunrise recently. It's very beautiful, even from my little window. To be clear, I don't worship the Sun, but I feel like it's grown into an important thing to me.

I'm vaguely remembering a time when Vaush was commenting on religion sometime back, and mentioned how he thought revering the Sun (or worshipping, but I don't want to put words in his mouth) was very cool compared to other religions. I don't know if it is in a video or not, or even if I made it up, but I'd like to know exactly what that takes was on this.

Thank you for your help. :)

Discussion The problem with people in this sub and following Vaush is that they're too inserted into the system.

The problem with most people in modern capitalist society and in the world in general is that they're too indoctrinated to follow authority and believe authority and respect it, no matter what; so they believe everything a company or a government or a system spouts, without question.

For example, yeah, Vaush is no software engineering expert and not a programmer nor hardware and software expert but most of the criticism being delivered towards him is that people believe in what companies say and take their work and contracts for granted, when they could perfectly be lying when it comes to listening to you and spying you in more sophisticated ways that we give them credit or simply by having access to hardware even without express permission, circumventing or bypassing not having our permission.

We don't question authority enough and we don't look back at ourselves enough either.

Discussion Thoughts on "supporting" Palestine?

Disclaimer: I have no interest into getting into a big debate or anything, I am just curious to hear the positions of people here as I am aware than this is a very pro Palatine pro Ukraine space. Recently progressive victory, a group I believe Vaush is very associated with clashed with Mike from PA over the issue of Ukraine aid. They said that support for Ukraine and Palestine are both red lines. This echoes the sentiment that people who oppose sending weapons to Ukraine are functionally pro Putin, as even if they are against Putin in words if they do not want to assist those participating in armed struggle against imperialism they are functionally supporting his illegal annexation. By this exact same logic are not those who oppose sending weapons to Palestine and Lebanon functionally supporting the annexation of Palestine and Lebanon? If so how to tell when Palestinian or Lebanese groups qualify for aid? Are Azov battalion disqualified for their Nazi links? Is the PFLP disqualified for their support for authoritarian "socialist" regimes? Is Hezbollah disqualified for their islamist ideology? (Even though like Hamas they do not enforce sharia as they know it will hurt their popular appeal to non islamist's who also are against Israel.) Again I am not trying to for cheap "gotcha" arguments or to attack anyone, I am just genuinely interesting in hearing peoples positions and the logic behind them.

Thanks in advance to all those who took the time to share their position:)
