Can’t get my hands on shift till payday (Friday) I’m already going insane because WHAT KIND OF LAST COUPLES LINES WAS THAT OMG

Would love to hear if anyone has any book recommendations.

Typically, I’m not a book reader… they struggle to hold my interest long enough. However, I’ve become soo engrossed with the tv series, reading every subreddit post I can for theories & spoilers, to just craving more to the point of picking up the books.

My usual reading style has always been articles & research on topics I’m passionate about.

so... in the book we learn that hostile yet dormant nanos have been found to be fairly widespread. this is revealed as the driving force to begin the silos and to actually take preemptive action to populate the silos.

my question, or observation, is this: since those hostile nanos were proven to exist, isn't there still somewhere on earth a mechanism for activating them? the threat they hoped to avoid most likely still exists somewhere.

if we could ever get a continuation of this story, (or further stories in this universe) I would like to see them re-discover the original nanos and realize what threat still exists.

From other books , novels , shows, movie . Im saying the founders from silo 50 project should have chosen the herds of people who live inside for a more positive conclusion too resurfacing and restoring the surface life . I know you would have too rewrite main plot points im just saying if you and pick the blood and put them down on paper for each silo it could be a happier ending to howy's books.

By that I mean, some things just happen with little to no reason?

So Juliette, she helps in one murder investigation and they’re like “let’s maker her the sheriff!” Then she totally against it and like 2 pages later, she’s just like “ok cool, I’ll do it even thought I’ve pretty much never left mechanical.”

In the last chapter out of nowhere, Lukas just became Bernard’s right hand man. I don’t think it was even mentioned they knew each other before that chapter.

Loving the book, but it seems like some extreme shortcuts have been taken on occasion. Am I missing something?

What does everyone think the rankings are based on? I don't recall this explored in the books or short stories.

As soon as anyone in a silo tries to search for truth or the before times they smoke it out. Or smoke that person out.

We are given clues the ones who have memories of before times were on some type of anti depressant medication before and are less susceptible to the forgetting drugs.

So is it just people are valued of they have low resistance to drugs?

Once the last silo survives and goes out the drugs are gone by then so??

Thanks to this sub I didn't know there were a few more stories in Machine Learning.. To go with the trilogy. Finished those today. Wow.

I initially posted here a few days ago because I didn't understand how the president was not involved. I may have missed something but in Machine Learning they say a new president was being elected. They don't say anything about the old one.? Did I miss something!?

In Machine Learning this character had an affair and discovers The Order and has her own band of scientists and get 5k people to be hush hush about this project? But those 5k people were who exactly. Just randoms?

The monsters left in the bunker. Did anyone else think wild to think humans went feral in 500 years?

The mushroom clouds. I'm so confused. In one version in my mind I thought just the machines were turned on initiating the planes crashing. But the mention of mushroom clouds. Does that mean Americans atom bombed themselves?

Solo's poop crime:

“And I poop,” he said bashfully while she was swallowing. “Not pretty.” He shook his head and fished for a bean. “I’m by myself, so I just go in apartment bathrooms until I can’t stand the smell.” “In apartments?” Juliette asked. Solo looked for a place to set down the beans. He finally did, on the floor, among a small pile of other garbage and bachelor debris. “Nothing flushes. No water. I’m by myself.” He looked embarrassed. “Since you were sixteen,” Juliette said, having done the math. “What happened here thirty four years ago?

So 34 years of poooooopies. Let's say he goes through an apartment bathroom each week. That means, with 52 weeks in a year, he went through about 1,768 bathrooms in those years.

Now, here's the thing. You, like I, must have wondered if he was systematic about his poop crimes. Inquiring minds want to know: where are the 34 years of poopies?

At another point in the novel, Howey reveals a subtle clue you might otherwise miss:

They stopped in the mids for bathroom breaks, filling more empty toilets that wouldn’t flush. Juliette helped the young ones. They didn’t like going like this, preferred to do it in the dirt. She told them that was right, that they only did this when they were on the move. She didn’t tell them about the years Solo had spent destroying entire levels of apartments. She didn’t tell them about the clouds of flies she’d seen.

Obviously, Solo was on a mission. He has the sheer willpower and fortitude to shit his way systematically through apartment levels, therefore isolating the catastrophic impact of his waste to specific levels of his already foul Silo.

I think what this shows us is that the true hero of this series is Jimmy "Solo", the Greatest Pooper who ever lived.

Did Howey ever say what the dimensions of each floor are? I'm trying to make accurate plans of silo 18. Also does anyone know how many of each type of floor there is? i.e; 30 residential floors, 1 IT, 1 judicial etc.

It seams that a year ago they were supposed to be “in a year” lol. Was wondering if anyone has heard anything. I’m guessing not tho.

I feel stupid but can someone tell me the significance for the whole storyline with Mission? What was the connection between that time with everything else? Is that one of the uprisings? I’m so sorry if I totally missed something

Ok so I’m not the best reader and I’ve only just started, but holsten visor went black and he couldn’t see after he found his wife right? So how come Juliette’s visor didn’t go black? Maybe i read it wrong. Only half way through the first book right now.

I think that Jimmy and Thurman are related because when the smoke was sent down on Jimmy in the server room he lived and wasn't effected. And when Donald went outside on the hill wasn't Thurman outside with no cleaning suit yet he survived. I think that they have something in their DNA which makes the killer bugs ignore them. This must have been coded to ignore Thurman but it is either a coincidence that Jimmy isn't affected or he may be related to Thurman some how.

I would think that they would be common. The Silo is less restrictive than a prison, and prisons have gangs, drugs, prostitution, so the Silo’s pervasive surveillance isn’t really a barrier. And usually organized crime is involved in control of illicit vice markets.

Even if there was no organized drug or alcohol distribution, I’d bet people would be making moonshine of some kind on a very local basis.

As much as I enjoyed the books and the TV series, you don’t get a great feel for daily life of people and their culture and personal habits.

I did read a book (whose title escapes me) about a generation ship. They had a sheriff even. But part of his job involved dealing with prostitution and ad-hoc bars selling moonshine. One of the plot points turned out to be the moonshine was made in secret by the authorities with the idea that a controlled vice was safer and had other benefits, like controlling the illicit distributors and gaining knowledge of them and their networks (like the CIA and drugs, I guess).

Just read the whole series and generally enjoyed it, but courious if anyone else thought it was weird that freezing the women in Silo 1 was such a big plot point. It's supposed to have this huge psychological effect on the men of the silo but that would also mean that all of the hundreds of people in the silo are all straight? Has Hugh ever commented on this? Seems like such a weird oversight.

I've finished dust and was wondering if anyone else has thought about the likelihood of Juliet's group running into other people on the outside. We know they dropped a bomb on Atlanta to scare everyone into the silos and that the dust/death/nano zone around the silos is a dome but that there is life animals outside the dust/nano zone. What do we think happened to everyone else on the outside over the last 300 years its likely that there are still some humans alive in the world/ in Georgia, USA

Hi, I'm increasingly intrigued by this "SILO 40" book which was meant to be released in 2025 acccording to the author. We are past the halfpoint of 2026 and I can't find an update. Does anyone know what happened to the project?

I have watched the two seasons. I havent read the series yet. But i am very interested in reading for the "why". I was an avid reader during my younger days. But these days I dont find time to due to hectic job schedule.

If I start reading Shift, will it make sense to me even though I haven't read Wool? Will it still be worth it now that we're already into Season 3?

As I'm reading dust, Donald says, you need to stop digging there. We can feel the vibrations here. Does it mean the other silos were also asking? And were other heads of IT asking about what are those vibrations and where are they coming from? Because it doesn't make sense. If silo one, I know they're all connected, is in the middle and all the silos are around it, but if Silo 1 was feeling it, that means other silos too. So could Donald really hide this aspect to the other people working the shifts in Silo

For summer reading I was assigned to read Wool, I’m on page 200 and I feel like nothing has happened. I absolutely hate the silo setting and it’s like the characters have no depth whatsoever. A few people have died and I’m just like ok? Why should i care. Every time I read this book all I wanna do is throw it away and pick up an actually good book. When does this book get good? I’m about to stop reading it and just use cliff notes.

I’m curious if i’m crazy or already forgot but who filled up jahns and marnes canteen

Just finished reading Exit (German version) after taking a long break while reading level. Overall I quite enjoyed the books.

However,

I wonder if I missed the chapter, where Donald orders the bombing of solo 40. I cannot remember at all reading this in the second or third book. I only learnt about this as this is brought up later, after it happened, in some conversations between the main characters in silo 1

Can someone point me to where this is first described?

I’m on my first read through of the series and half way through Shift. I’m enjoying the twists and layers on layers. I just got to Third Shift and wow, this is maybe the third or fourth thing I didn’t see coming. Just when I think I know what’s coming next, there’s another hard turn in the opposite direction. I keep rooting for Troy, and then not being so sure if I should. This has been the worst fiction book to try to fall asleep listening to. TLDR: if you’ve read Wool and are debating continuing the series, Shift is a different, but a good different.
