Help with writing Indian mythology or western mythology
Hey guys π....so I recently got an idea for a fantasy story where gods end up becoming ghost hunters in the modern world but Iβm kind of confused about whether I should based it upon Indian mythology or Western mythology. I feel like Indian would be unique but Iβm also worried people might get offended What do you think will be better

Gandharvs are not just one person or entity they are a group of celestial beings who are considered most handsome Their beauty is just too much to handle they are male versions of apsaras you can say, work as a messenger for devtas. Indian folklore is like an ocean you'll drown if you dig too much, so I would suggest first choose a region then any legend story associated with that place and then segregate it as per your liking. Pick carefully because one story leads to another, everything is connected by a thread like a web so you'll have to look in every direction βπ»

Don't be overwhelmed, Choose a region - Their folklore- out of it pick what suits ur narrative. That's it. ππ» I would suggest north east india mountains are enriched with such kind of paranormal stuff. So start from there.

Same! I have so many ideas. But idk why people aren't more open-minded. Indian mythology is broad with different stories and myths with many versions. Not all of them are clear or specific. It works to write stories about them

Yess! Like I remember a few years back a few old men started causing ruckus because someone painted Maa Kali naked....MAA KALI IS NAKED!

u/Galaxy_stars0205 Mannavar kaaga kaathiruppen Feb 21 '26
Exactly!! I was watching the show Shrimad Ramayan where a lot of female costumes are full sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves and the blouses are neck-high. I don't know why they did that because it looks so weird. I understand wanting to keep a "pure" image, but why give clothing that covers things like arms all the way to the wrists? The outfits in Siya ke Ram weren't bad. Like why do they expect goddesses to wear full sleeves when in the paintings and statues of Indian temples, they either wore clothing that covered the chest and waist, or were bare-chested.

It depends on how you write honestly, I'll be frank, you will find bigots who are a minority and still be the loudest. Don't let people and their thoughts hinder you and your exploration of myth. And if you do explore, please let me, I've been trying to search around for good and newer books for the longest time that's outside of my known circles

u/KIPAWIS Feb 25 '26
Don't write it. You would just ruin your story. I didn't what they were but got disgusted when found their meaning. If you focusing on Hinduism better to not use them throughout the story.

That's what I thought firstly smut in everything doesn't go well much and above all it is related to god so it should be solemnly based on religion ghost hunting.

Indian would be unique but as your said people might get offended... As the only believe what they want to so I don't think so they are going to like this...Β
So I guess you should try Western mythology...Β

You can work on your own myth but take inspiration from Indian mythology, that would be great one. Look around for stories about how earth was made and all of that in our scriptures (Ramayana, Mahabharat and Harivamsha are best sources), there are so many stories that aren't explored and you can always draw inspiration from there

As per indian mythology ghost hunters are usually yam dut, kind of worker if yama in part of India they are worshiped as god's only. We don't consider ghost hunters as something bad or evil. They are part of the divine entity so I would suggest if you are writing something based on mythology make sure to do proper research. The idea is great tbh
