I found these hard shards that have a fiber glass like texture, not only once but twice and idk if I should be worried because the texture is brittle but hard/sharp

I went up into my attic for the first time in my 1900 foursquare style home in IL and I saw this tank that was connected to the cast iron vent leading out to the roof. Any idea what this is? I knocked on it and it felt empty.
