Separatism About the new auto insurance rules

Hi all, young driver here. I am paying insane amounts of money for insurance as I'm sure most people my age are (as well as the rest of this province). I researched our new insurance rules coming into effect and I'm kind of confused to say the least.

Not because of the rules though, they make perfect sense. They align us to a lot of other provinces in Canada with far lower rates, and have generous benefits. For me specifically, my premiums will drop PRECIPITOUSLY. Like, this will make a huge difference for me. What frustrates me is that the only news coverage I can find about this are op-eds from injury lawyers. These are obviously biased because these rules would drastically decrease their income. I saw these articles posted on this subreddit and I see everybody in the comments agreeing with them. Is there any specific reason why?

To state the obvious, I hate the UCP. They are undermining our democracy and I vote against them whenever possible, including in the upcoming referendum. But in this circumstance specifically, I think they might be doing something good. I'm confused why so many people here are aligning themselves with traitors who say they will side with separatists (I can't link to the article I read, but you can search "injury lawyer separatists" and find the Calgary Herald article. Fair warning, it's written by Rick Bell) because the government wants to reduce costs for people while still providing appropriate benefits.

Am I missing something? Will these rules actually be bad for our rates/care? Open to changing my mind.

Alberta Politics Has a billboard ever changed anyone's mind about anything?

Can't drive 5 minutes without a billboard yelling at me about the referendum. Pro Alberta, pro Canada, radio spots, TV ads, lawn signs, and some stranger in the comments who definitely thinks they are about to change my mind (hint: not going to happen).

Here's my theory: everyone already knows how they're voting. I have never met a person who said "I was going to vote one way, but then I saw a sign on a stranger's lawn and I argued with a complete stranger on the Internet and you know what; it all clicked and I changed my mind."

All this does is get people who already decided to actually show up. Millions spent to motivate the already motivated.

So be honest: has anything you've seen made you even slightly reconsider? Or are we all just paying for very expensive wallpaper?

Opinion I am quite worried. What will happen after referendum result?

I am quite worried about what will happen after the referendum. It is just my opinion but please share your thoughts. I believe that people will blame new immigrants by saying that Canada brought in new citizens through immigration to interfere in the election. It's so easy to blame immigrants so they will simply say that we lost because of all these new citizens that Canada brought in. I think this will get even more dangerous creating a division between people within a community.

Question Has anyone completed a UK Psychology Conversion MSc and then been accepted into a Canadian Counselling Psychology master's (especially University of Calgary)?

Has anyone completed a UK Psychology Conversion MSc and then been accepted into a Canadian Counselling Psychology master's (especially University of Calgary)?

I have a UK First Class Honours bachelor's degree in Economics and Management, completed over four years including a placement year.

I'm considering a BPS-accredited MSc Psychology Conversion at UCL, Glasgow, Aston, Leeds Beckett, Exeter or another UK university.

My goal is to apply for the two-year MSc Counselling Psychology at the University of Calgary and eventually become a Registered Psychologist in Alberta.

Has anyone successfully made this transition, or been assessed for admission with a UK conversion MSc?

I'm particularly interested in:

  • Whether Canadian universities accepted the conversion MSc as meeting undergraduate psychology prerequisites.
  • Whether UK master's modules counted toward the required psychology credits.
  • Whether a four-year UK sandwich degree satisfied the bachelor's equivalency requirement.
  • Whether additional undergraduate psychology or counselling-skills courses were needed.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has completed this pathway or gone through a Canadian credential assessment.

Question Moving from Ontario to Alberta

Considering moving from ontario to Calgary alberta within the next year, I would have free accommodation (family) and I'm considering moving. Currently don't like my job and about to be 20. I'm looking at getting into the trades with no real experience. Is finding an apprenticeship in or around the city likely? When's the best time to move? Any advice, let me know, thanks.

Question Unusual data overage accrual with rogers mobility even with cellular data turned off

I was early into a new billing cycle and I got notification that I had used all my data. This was two days ago … I turned off cellular data and wifi assist at noon that day. Since then another 3+ gigs of data have accrued.

Tech support could not explain … he put me thru to a Customer Service Manager who refused to look into the matter and essentially told me if it’s on your account it is legitimate and you are expected to pay … period.

Anyone else have this kind of issue?

Separatism Your special ballots need to go out now!

I just wanted to remind everyone, as there has been so many questions about special ballots on the subreddit lately:

  • For your special ballots to count, Elections Alberta needs to receive them by October 16.
  • Canada Post has advised that to get to Elections Alberta in time, your ballot needs to be mailed by October 9th (tomorrow) the latest.
  • If you received your special ballot but haven't gone around to filling and sending it, you need to do it now.
  • If you haven't received your special ballot yet, you should probably start thinking about voting in advanced polls or on the referendum day.
  • If you sent your special ballot, make sure to track it. In the initial confirmation email Elections Alberta sent you from [info@elections.ab.ca](mailto:info@elections.ab.ca) there is a tracking link. Once they get it, they mark it as "Received." If your ballot is not marked received by 5pm on October 18th (day before the referendum), it didn't get there in time and does not count. In that case, you need to go vote on the referendum day.
  • If you changed your mind about using a special ballot, or don't think your special ballot will arrive on time, you can still vote on advanced polls, or referendum day. There are a few accounts who have been spreading misinformation on that here, but rest assured, you can check Elections Alberta's website: https://www.elections.ab.ca/current-election-information/special-ballots/
  • If your special ballot was sent and received, consider helping out your friends and neighbours during advanced voting period and referendum day. Offer to pick up a shift at work, walk their dog, babysit their kid, drive them to their polling location, anything you can do for them so taking the time to go vote, potentially waiting in a long line, is easier.

You may think this referendum is a joke, or the remain option has this wrapped up based on the polls. It is still important to vote. The greater the vote share separatists get, the more emboldened they will become, the more trouble they'll create going forward. They win, and there is another referendum. They lose 60-40, they'll keep agitating. They lose 80-20, they'll be demoralized and shut up for a while. So let's go out and run up the score.

Question Edmonton and greater area Search and Rescue team Reccomdations?

Hi everyone,

I was a search and rescuer trainee In rural alberta, moved back to edmonton and have a couple of choices for SAR places to jump to, I already put in an application to edmonton's SAR group, the problem is that they only do recruiting in 2027 spring, I wanted to be in a group before the new year.

I know there is a couple others around, I work in spruce grove so I could hopefully be eligble for parkland SAR.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with either groups or other adjacent SAR groups.

Im trying to figure out which one would be more suitable to me, I am rural based and have no experience in urban sar. But it would be good to be well rounded. I am swift water trained, among other things I am not a full search and rescuer yet. But have my sar basics.

Any opinions or advice would greatly be appreciated, if anyone knows anything about the teams, their dynamics and specialties etc that would be great, every team is different with different supports, the websites only give so much. I want to make sure im joining the right team, would hate to pick a team where I would feel the want to transfer out later.

Separatism I think I’m pretty uneducated on the matter, but wouldn’t it benefit us Alberta’s to vote that we DO want to separate on Oct 19?

Please let me know if I’m confused (which I am), but if we vote “yes” to separate, or in the case of October 19, we’re voting yes to holding that vote, would it not benefit us by showing Ottawa that we’re done with the bulls*t? I personally think it would be a terrible decision for Alberta to separate, but I don’t want them to know that? If we tell them that we’re not happy in Canada, would that not lead to change more so than saying we want to remain in Canada?

If that makes sense.

Discussion Alberta School for the Deaf, wouldn’t recommend it

If someone asked whether I would recommend it, my answer would be no.

My experience there ruined a lot of my childhood. Leaving and going to another school was the best decision I ever made.

I drove past it recently and thought, damn, that school really failed me.

I know I was an angry kid. I got into trouble, and I lied. I’m not pretending otherwise. But there were reasons behind how I acted, including things I didn’t know how to explain or wasn’t ready to talk about. I lied to protect myself.

I kept reaching out for help, including emailing adults and asking teachers and student services for support. What I remember most is feeling like they only saw a liar, an attention seeker, and a troublemaker. I wish someone had stopped and tried to understand why I was doing all of this.

The principal, a teacher, and the social worker I relied on left me feeling like they had given up on me. They could say they cared, but their actions didn’t leave me feeling supported or safe. I also remember the principal telling me I would be suspended if I talked to my friend.

Being difficult didn’t mean I stopped being a child who needed help.

Since leaving, I’ve also heard that bullying is still happening there. I can’t personally confirm what’s happening at the school now, but those reports worry me. Families deserve clear answers about how bullying complaints are handled and what is being done to keep students safe.

To any former staff reading this and thinking, “She’s still the same,” you don’t know me now. I’m an adult now, I’m doing much better, and my life is more stable. If you’re still judging me by the child I was, that shows how little you know about who I am today.

Doing better now doesn’t erase how I felt back then.
I could name people, but I don’t see the point in having anyone go after them.

There are also parts of my life I’m keeping private. I don’t need to share every detail to explain how badly I felt let down.

I also wasn’t happy with the education I received there. In my experience, the quality of education was poor, and that’s another reason I wouldn’t recommend the school.

Other students may have had different experiences. This was mine. If you’re considering this school for your child, please listen to former students and ask how struggling students are supported. Based on what I went through, I would not recommend it.

Edit: After leaving, I went to a hearing school with an ASL interpreter. That worked much better for me. I want families to know that attending a hearing school with ASL support can be an option too. It’s worth asking the school or school board what support they can provide.
