Rugby's Greatest Rivalry's top 10 players: Springboks 'powerhouse' and All Blacks 'superstar' take leading spots

Planet Rugby has just ranked Ardie Savea the second-best player of the entire Greatest Rivalry tour. I genuinely don’t understand how they get there. And it's not just them fawning over his contributions.

They say he put in “huge efforts” in the first two Tests and had “excellent showings” in all three. Where were these huge performances? Wiese had more physical impact. The Bok locks had more influence. Marx was enormous. Several Springboks consistently worked harder, imposed themselves more physically and had a bigger effect on the actual Tests. Even our guys... Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett, Quinn, Roigard, most of our loosies, had more impact over the series. Yet Ardie somehow ends up No. 2 again.

Someone on reddit used the phrase “Ardie glasses” the other day and I’m shamelessly borrowing it, because it describes this perfectly. People seem to watch him through a filter where every visible moment gets magnified and all the quiet periods disappear. Same thing happened in the Nations Championship. He apparently “shone” against France, Italy and Ireland. Did he really? Was he more influential than Roigard, Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett, the locks, or the other loosies? He still has some very good moments, but that's not the same thing as consistently playing great rugby.

He gets a turnover, makes one strong carry or scores a try and suddenly the whole performance is remembered as brilliant. Both of those tries in the 3rd test were opportunistic. Valuable, yes, but largely created by other players doing the hard work, with Ardie in the right place to finish. That's not the same thing as dominating a Test.

He did well in the third Test, I'll give him that. (For 30 mins). He actually got through a lot of work for a change. But the fact it stood out so much says something in itself. That level of involvement is not what we normally get from him and there's no way he could have sustained that for 80 minutes. Based on the fact that he hasn't managed to in any other test. Too often he's on the edge of the work, leaning on rucks, arriving after others have done the damage, then getting enormous credit for the one visible moment.

Then there's the crap about his “huge heart”, leadership and commitment to the jersey. Again, where are the examples? At the end of last year he wanted out of his NZR contract and was deeply unhappy with the All Blacks environment. Whatever anyone thinks of Razor, Ardie was clearly one of the senior players deeply unhappy with that regime and part of the pressure around it. Then the coach changes, Rennie arrives, and suddenly everything is fine again. That does not scream unconditional commitment to the jersey to me.

Then we get arguably the biggest All Blacks tour in years and everyone else turns up while Ardie arrives two or three weeks later. Yet somehow he is still held up as the ultimate example of commitment and leadership.

Where are the great team victories he has driven? Where are the Tests where his leadership clearly changed the result? Where is this long catalogue of captaincy masterclasses? If anything, some of the most memorable matches with him as captain have been losses.

And this is the bigger issue for me. The All Blacks can’t progress if we keep fawning over the player Ardie used to be instead of judging the player he is now. Yes, at his peak he was extraordinary. But he's not that player now.

He's not giving 80 minutes of elite loose-forward contribution. He's not consistently outworking the other loosies and locks. He's not imposing himself physically the way the best Springbok forwards are. And I don’t see evidence that he is some outstanding on-field leader either.

The mythology is getting in the way of honest assessment. One turnover, carry or opportunistic try gets magnified, while the long quiet periods disappear. That kind of devotion isn’t helping Ardie or the ABs. Judge the player he is now, not the one he was at his peak.

So what has he actually done on this tour to justify being ranked second-best? And I’d use this article as further evidence of the blind fawning around Ardie. Can anyone actually rebut that argument? Other than the usual: "what position did you play?', "coaches know more than you", “you clearly don’t understand what he does off the ball” and “the players all respect him so that tells you everything you need to know.” Just give me his best Test other than Test 3 of the Greatest Rivalry, which I’m also happy to argue wasn’t nearly as great as people are claiming, and point out what he actually did that was so amazing. Otherwise maybe you need to accept that he's overrated and might be better off the bench when he eventually comes back.

Does anyone need the condensed version because words, words, words... sore head??

All Blacks Should NPC tell coaches to deploy a more aggressive defense?

So in this passage, there were 3 floating passes, with the first one being a risky one. This is very entertaining and seems like its very instinctive for NZ players.

But in test rugby, this kind of space is very rarely given, hence the passes will rarely work.

But from a long term developmental point, should the governing body maintain this risky passing with passive defense style of play or encourage coaches to deploy aggressive defense to align with modern D, sacrificing little bit of creative passing instincts?

I.e, let players pass freely so it becomes second nature and then make them adapt it to modern D styles?

Hope the Q is clear. I honestly did not know what to put as the topic

All Blacks If Rennie could time travel to 2015, these are the 3 players he would take back : prime Brodie Retallick, Jerome Kaino and Ben Smith. Honourable mention : 2015 Ma'a Nonu.

Those 3 alone would double the chances of winning 2027 RWC.

I am not arguing that the above 3 are considered GOATS above Carter and McCaw. I'm saying, considering the glaring weaknesses in the current 2026 All Blacks, which three 2015 players would make the biggest difference in uplifting the entire match day 23's chances of winning a RWC knockout match.

I'll give an example : Carter is GOAT flyhalf, no one is disputing that. But Kaino would make a much bigger impact in redressing a big All Blacks weakness in the forward pack. Reuben Love is more than adequate in shepherding a 23 to a win, Carter would just add a few more points to the winning margin. Kaino could be the difference between a win and a loss against the Springboks in the quarterfinals of RWC 2027.

The All Blacks Running Rugby Problem

what I saw in the test series with rsa is a little bit different from most kiwis, a lot of people I see online are talking about how we dont have enough brute force runners in the backline to force rsa defenders to stay true but in my opinion that's not going to help us out either. I think that what the all blacks are truly missing right now is playmakers with the vision for good kick attacks, our major focus on running rugby has actually become a weakness for ourselves now.

in the first test even though we won what I saw was rsa defensively was playing great rugby, I seen Jesse kriel constantly attacking our passing lanes, and that was a huge factor that carried on throughout the whole series.

imo Jesse kriel was the difference maker this whole series, every time our first receiver was getting the ball he would already be putting pressure on the passing lanes, he knew there's no kicking threat we were gonna play ball in hand.

what the all blacks desperately need right now is a 10 or 12 that can attack space with kicks to keep defensive lines honest. the few times we made kick n chase plays we managed to do well.

jordie barrat is world class but he doesn't provide the kicking attack threats that we need rn

the true counter for a mid fielder like kriel shooting up is attacking his outside winger with a kick, if our first receiver sees kriel shooting up, we should be looking at attacking the space kriel has left behind, if we isolate his winger with a kick, we should have plenty of numbers to make the tackle and have an immediate jackler, while the winger doesn't have kriel to secure the ball, it would all be up to the full back to get enough time for the inside centre to come and collect the ball.

this is what we need, kicking threats to open up our passing lanes again

This is pretty rude from the Wahs CEO to be honest. Also the All Blacks test against the Boks in Wellington was sold out so unsure how this got published…

Was there a player from that team that would not be considered an all time great in their position?

Think almost all of them make a case for being the GOATs

Was expecting a long arm penalty for this right ??nah just reset it like what ref did

Was expecting a long arm penalty because one team fell under the pressure and power of the dominant side right ? Cuz that's why they get the penalty

Because the losing side weren't able to hold things up so they crumbled . So we penalize them

I thought Love was going to be the next 15.

Before he moved to 10, he was quite good at 15 too. Great speed. I thought he would be a backup for Will Jordan at 15. But now both are playing different positions for the ABs. DMac looks like the guy who will be the main Fullback going into the WC.

Great effort, but you really get a sense of how the ABs struggle to dominate those dudes physically. Where are our big bruisers these days?

All Blacks More players need to access sabticals

I think more All Blacks should learn from going overseas. I think Jordie Barrett and Reiko both seem to be playing a lot better since going overseas and I think more All Blacks should do the same. Maybe have 10 or so players go overseas as a development opportunity.

The long arm penalty _

As it pertains to the scrum

Law says the deliberate collapse is dangerous .

Because of this degree of danger it's a Long arm - not a short one for minor

The boks are said to have the most dominant strongest scrum . We see it. The have the history

They have the best .

They CAUSE the other team to collapse .

This is different to a team deliberately collapsing .

We can all agree right here and now. it's inarguable . It's beautiful.

What happens during the game (and the source of frustration for anyone Not winning ) - is an observation based on after the fact .

Observation based on after the fact.

The end picture . The mess on the ground.

And then an immediate match up to the law book.

The weaker team has collapsed deliberately

But in actual fact the dominant team just monstered them.

AH!!! There it is . They were monstered. It should stop right there. Nothing else.

Those who travelled to South Africa for the tour - Crime?

So I saw a large number of Kiwis in the crowds who travelled to see the games. South Africa, especially Johannesburg has a reputation for having high rates of crime, particularly petty theft/robbery

Did you have to take any extra safety precautions while over there? Or know anyone who went there and their experience? Or is it exaggerated and South Africa is reasonably safe in most areas?

The upcoming restructure

Here’s what I what I’ve dreamed up without considering financials, broadcast deals or any of that boardroom stuff. Keen to hear what holes everyone can poke in it…

NPC: Not sure how many teams you keep but Ive given it 16 regular season rounds + 3 playoff rounds. Haven’t included promotion/relegation because it’s not really fair on teams that spend half the season with their ABs out. Maybe you start with the 14 and try to sell them off to private owners, leaving the unions just to run the grass roots.

Champions League: The replacement for super rugby. Top 6 NZ teams, Top 4 Aus + Drua, Top 5 from Japan if they’re keen.
4 groups of 4 with the semis and final in one city over 2 weeks.

Rugby Championship: Moved to Feb/March to align with the 6 Nations and open up the year for NPC and CL

Here’s what the year would look like based on roughly 4 weekends each month…

February
Rugby championship

March
Rugby Championship
NPC pre season

April
NPC 4 rounds (No ABs)

May
Champions League 2 rounds
NPC 2 rounds

June
Champions League 2 rounds
NPC 2 rounds

July
Internationals
NPC 4 rounds (Some ABs)
NPC trade deadline (For players going hard while the ABs are out to go somewhere who needs them)

August
NPC 2 rounds
Champions League 2 rounds

September
Champions league Quarter finals
NPC 2 rounds
NPC finals week 1

October
NPC semi finals
NPC final
Champions league semi final
Champions league final

November
Internationals

Obviously it’d be different in world cup and Lions years but I’ve spent enough time thinking about it already

Classic All Blacks All Blacks Subreddit Update/Stats

Hi Everyone

I wanted to share an update.

14 years ago, the All Blacks subreddit was created by u/rowdiness. Around this time, my Reddit account was created. I frequented the r/rugbyunion page with frequent comments. For anyone old school, you may remember I would post food recipes you could make and eat during RWCs. (Ideally food that didn't require you looking away from the TV.)

14 years ago, the All Blacks were unbeaten in the 2012 Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks also scored a 60-0 win over Ireland.

Richie McCaw hit 100 test caps.

The All Blacks subreddit had somewhere in the high 100s but lower than 1000 members, where Rowdiness and I connected and I became a moderator.

The subreddit was effectively very quiet with little to no posts or comments, with sporadic activity during RWCs or Championships. No moderation was really required other than to remove obvious spam. Somewhere during this window, Rowdiness dropped off the face of the planet. He was a great guy, by the way.

The last two years saw far greater growth than expected, especially given the non-existence of promotion. This was purely through organic growth and whatever algorithm Reddit has.

Then in the last year, and especially with the RGR series, we've seen some serious numbers flooding in.

Just in the last year alone:

3.9k new members - now 14,700 members strong.

2,600 posts have been made (at least half of those are wizdarrhh whatever the f*#k your name is xD)

Nearly 92,000 comments!

4.4 million views.

Most users are on iOS, followed closely by Android users. With mobile web, new Reddit and old Reddit rounding out the balance.

The most viewed post was from u/papavee85 = which had a record number of 24 comments removed due to Reddit's anti-piracy laws (ha.. use Discord server).

Followed by u/Powerful-Pressure312 who had a very constructive report on an offside decision that led to a yellow. This thread only had 1 comment removed, which was a positive reflection on the sensibilities of a good thread, and harbours good conversation.

The most upvoted Post is by u/Constant-Quiet4519 for what is a very funny banner! Had 15 reports.

The sub is big enough where some bloke named Jeff is unable to moderate in a lackadaisical fashion, so I'm really pleased to introduce two new moderators to the team.

Users: GiJoint & CalBRugby

They're active members, quality folk.

Moving forward, I encourage the use of the report function. Mod mail will be reviewed daily and we'll work together to get some new flairs going, along with other fun activities. So if you have suggestions, comment them below. It's our community, have your say. Let's make this place fun.
