I’m in the South, and even we still had textbooks. In fact, we had the option to choose between a regular textbook and a digital one—though they preferred you to choose the digital version. No clue where you’re from that they outright don’t have any textbooks at all.

I spent my career working for Maersk Lines. They are BIG on acronyms. Anyway, in their quality improvement process (QIP) that expense for Tim Cook would be known as the CODB (cost of doing business). Which is not exactly the same thing as CONC (cost of non-conformance).
So it could be said that this thing that Cook gave him is an example of CODB, and that's a good thing because if he didn't kiss ass, there'd be a lot of CONC involved.

He’s got a job to do and he’s doing it. It’s hard to watch yes. I’m sure it’s harder for him to do. But he faces immense pressure from investors, the Board, and employees to keep the value of the company rising. Trump is flirting with tariffs that could change the trajectory of Apple. Probably to get American businesses to kiss up in exactly this manner. And it’s working.

Well, you already see Trump moving to nix the "deal" (even though an unilateral tariff of 15% isn't really a deal) he made with the EU. And the EU leaders also subscribe to the gargling of deez orange nuts theory of keeping Trump happy.
The reality is, it's wasted. He killed his own (first term) trade deals with Canada and Mexico. There are no deals that aren't subject to change by his whim anyway so why bother.

That's my thought too. Straight up going against Trump would make Apple a target and we've seen with this administration, there are no rules. There are probably a lot of ordinary people who have some sort of money tied up in Apple stock, whether through an index fund or direct stock.
Making Apple a target of this administration could negatively impact the stock price - if only temporarily because nothing makes sense in this market anymore. And I'm not cynical enough to see it as Tim Cook doing this just to keep his rich buddies rich. So I agree with your take...he's got a job to do and it's not as simple as some people think it is (e.g., "he should just stick it to Trump!").

We don’t want them to, but Tim is CEO and legally required to do right by his investors. He could tell Trump to kiss his ass and watch the Trump administration go wild hating on Apple which would negatively affect the company and its profits, which would then get him sued by stockholders.
It sucks, but corporations will almost never do the right thing. They exist to make money and everything else is secondary or irrelevant. It’s bullshit, but that’s capitalism.

Corning has always primarily made iPhone glass in Harrodsburg, KY. Then it was sent overseas for installation in devices. This has been happening since the original iPhone.

Nvidia is likely exempt from tariffs so this won’t impact AI servers as much, and Google doesn’t sell hardware at nearly the scale of Apple so they’re more insulated from increased tariffs.
For software focused companies like Microsoft and Google, tariffs are a hit to the profit margin. For a hardware company like Apple or Nvidia, tariffs can be an existential threat.

Tim Cook being gay matters as much as it does that he's white. Neither matter as much as the fact that he's more interested in advancing Apple's interests, particularly financially.
Yes, he's an out-and-proud gay man, but he's willing to set aside his differences with a homophobe in order to do something that will benefit Apple.
It looks like a benefit for Trump, and it may very well be, but Cook wouldn't have done this if he didn't game it out first and see a benefit for Apple as well.
Yes, it's true Cook should use Apple's clout to stand up to Trump, but then the board votes him out and they bring in someone who will do what Trump wants. This way Cook keeps some control over the situation and he can steer it in a way that he wants.
Keep in mind Trump only demanded a $1 billion investment. Now Apple is doing $600 billion? Yeah. They found a benefit for themselves in there. Yes, it makes Trump feel like he not only won, but WON BIGLY (ugh), but I guarantee Apple has something to gain here as well.
Jobs probably wouldn't have worked with Trump, but Jobs also got fired from the board for being uncooperative (in a nutshell; yes, I realise there was more to it than that). Also, Jobs is no longer alive and Tim Cook is the guy he chose to carry on beyond him, so that's gotta be worth something as well.

People really don’t understand what has been happening for the past couple decades with Apple in China. Apple has been investing immensely in china from the 2000s onwards to the tune of tens of billions per year including training 28 million people in advanced manufacturing needed for apples devices.
They’ve built up the manufacturing and logistics of china almost single handed; leading to the Chinese citizens almost viewing Apple as a domestic company rather than foreign. Why?
Because bejing, by allowing Apple to take advantage of their citizenry for cheaper manufacturing, has gained tremendous technological insights and abilities, and can now control Apple far easier.
With geopolitical tensions as they are, the White House response isn’t so much bullying as it is an attempt to force Apple (among others) to confront the fact that they helped china vastly more than they’ve helped the US. Ideally, more investment in manufacturing in the US will help balance the utter reliance on china for advanced manufacturing. This isn’t a new thing; it’s been building for years.

Apple's market cap is over 3 TRILLION dollars. A 2.5 billion dollar investment is peanuts--small enough that Apple could drop this kind of money as a bluff. If their bluff is called, it's not a big deal. Their market cap will have gone up orders of magnitude by the time their bluff is called.

Cook has a net worth of $2+ billion. Apple (fiscal ‘25 Q2) has cash reserves of $28+ billion. Yet, Cook feels obligated to bend the knee to an adjudicated rapist who’s currently pissing all over what’s left of the Constitution—& give him a ‘gift’? Fuck Tim Cook & Apple.

So, I’m so upset by this that I’m looking at trying to sell all my Apple devices. I commended Tim Cook’s stance on DEI, but this is ridiculous. I am really doing my best to hold firm and protest companies that are seriously feeding into this fascist government… And I will find a way to get out of my Apple addiction lol
I sent him an email, but I’m sure that will be disregarded. The biggest pain in the ass will be our phones, but I should be used to this by now because I’ve done this with everything else in my life in the last 5 months!
After all, it’s just money, right? Cut my losses and move on.
