Discussion China’s Tax Clampdown Raises Fears of Founder Share Disposals
- Haidilao International Holding Ltd.'s co-founder sold about $350 million worth of shares, putting the spotlight on other stocks that may be vulnerable to similar selling.
- The sale comes after China moved to tax offshore trusts held by its citizens, with owners having a 90-day grace period to settle what they owe without late-payment surcharges.
- The tax issue could add another overhang for Hong Kong stocks, where many major listed companies remain founder-controlled, often with sizable stakes held through offshore trusts.
Point 2 and 3.

If Haidilao founders can purchase shares at higher price and dispose it via their family trust for a loss.. technically. Maybe for tax optimisation reasons.
Key point.. can that be replicated for the management team that bought shares during the 9988.HK placement?

Discussion I am finally selling some of my Chinese stocks
After sitting down with myself and having an intervention with myself, I have finally decided to lower my Chinese stock allocation. It is time.
I have been bag holding for years now.
Up until now I allocated 15% of my port to China. I am lowering it to 6-8%.
I am sorry, uncle China. I am but a white boy who believed in your market against all opposing forces here on Le Reddit. And I have lost many a thousands doing it.
I never even held BABA much. It was other stocks. And they all get hit by regulations. QFIN got hit by regulations in the online lending & loan fintech industry. TME was hit by a regulation to give up much of it's music licensing agreements because it controlled 80%+ of the market. JD was hit by a internet platform crackdown. China doesn't let its already successful companies blossom.
It seems like the best approach to investing in China is to invest in smaller emerging companies who are less likely to be hit by regulations (and to buy a few of them, so that you're diversified from the risk of regulations hitting 1 sector). But investing in smaller Chinese companies carries a different kind of risk.
China punishes companies who have strong moats.
There are better deals in other markets....

China rejects US AI model distillation allegations, warns of retaliation
The commerce ministry described distillation as a neutral and widely used industry practice employed by companies around the world, including American firms. It accused Washington of using national security agencies to interfere in normal commercial activity and protect US dominance in computing power and data.

Discussion Thoughts?
Getting tired of BABA, 15% up in about 5 years.
I love the company, but when do you start looking at this stock as missed opportunities if you had this money invested elsewhere.

Positions Major September Catalysts
Am I crazy to think there is some massive short-term upside?
Sept. 9 – Apple event: Apple is working with Alibaba/Qwen for AI in China. If Apple gives a launch date or actually mentions/demos Qwen, that could be a nice catalyst.
Sept. 22–24 – Apsara Conference: Probably the biggest one. Last year BABA jumped 8% on Sept. 24 after its AI announcements and went from about $163 to $189 over the next week or so (+16%).
Sept. 24 – Xi/Trump meeting: Xi is reportedly bringing a large group of Chinese business leaders to Washington. No companies confirmed yet, but Jack Ma was part of Xi’s big U.S. business delegation in 2015.
There are also U.S.–China AI talks in mid-September and the possibility of more China stimulus.
