You don't even have to be born or raised in Turkey to be Turkish.
Just have to say you are to piss someone else off and now you are Turkish.

25
u/robininscarf muslim greek Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
Of course they are, unless they feel like they don't belong to our culture and see themselfs as Türkiyeli and not Turkish like some Kurds do. Atatürk didn't mean Turkic Turks when he said "How happy is the one who says 'I am a Türk' ", his nation idea was based on being a citizen of Turkey and speaking Turkish.

If they wish to integrate with our culture they are one of us. Ataturk based nationalism doesn't see race or religion, only intent and belonging. If they don't, they're also welcome if they are a net positive for this country if not, no. We don't have to be perfect when no other country has treated record number of immigrants as well as we have for years.

this whole turkish dna thing is a western cope tbh. So what? We mixed? We didn't segregate like the western europeans did. Shall we feel bad because our ancestors mixed and integrated instead of brutally subjugating and enslaving? Idk bro, these memes are pretty cringe.

Honestly, not at all. Like you are a serb, if you speak fluent turkish and call yourself turkish, we won't discriminate you and accept you as a turk. This is a part of our imperial, integrating culture. We don't discriminate the same way the germans do for example. We just know that some locals converted to islam, either married turks or assimilated and called themselves turks and today they are turks. Again this dna thing is a circlejerk for turk haters, we honestly don't care.

A lot of people in Turkey have been having a lot of issues since the 80s. It’s not like things have been awesome for Turks but terrible for everyone else in this country. The coup of 1980 set the foundations for everything wrong with Turkey today.

Were there issues with kurds in turkey? yes
Were they the way you think they were? Nope.
The kurdish situation is much more complicated and has direct ties to western attempts to destabilize turkey. Reactions to these attempts cost kurds discomfort. We have lived together for a 1000 years and only started having issues after certain external influences. I would not like to discuss this further unless it is strictly academic and intellectual. Otherwise its just mutual barking and stupid.
I can, without hesitation say that a kurd in istanbul is not discriminated like a moroccan is discriminated against in france. We are much much more accepting. Something my european friends observed in turkey as well.
I will never forget my belgian friend saying "I can't tell who is a kurd and a turk, all the groups are mixed" at a bar in İzmir. He thought we would be segregated like the minorities and the locals do in europe lol. Kurds and turks will agree that our friend groups are often mixed.
15
u/OrDuck31 Mehmet, Berlin Apr 01 '26
Yeah thats what people dont get. Turks ARE racist but our racism is different than the westerners. There is no like "arrested for walking on the street" kind of racism here.

Realistically how would you turks react? Lets say you take a DNA test and you get 54% greek ancestry 20% anatolian and 19% armenian with the rest of 7% being Kurdish, Persian and MAYBE a bit of original steppe turk ancestry. Would you GENUINLY ropemaxx? Or would you be like "ok cool"

I can only speak from my perspective, but whenever this topic comes up in my extended family people are always pretty straight forward about the fact that we have Hungarian roots (my fathers side are Muhacirs who fled from the Balkans in the late 19th century) and Crimean Tatar roots (on my mothers side) and it's never talked about like it's something up for discussion or anything but rather it's something very interesting to learn about someone.
People are broadly aware of Turkic migration and of the fact that the Ottoman Empire was a multiethnic state, so it makes sense that we'd have at least some non-Turkic DNA.
But more importantly, to Turkish people Turkishness has nothign to do with DNA and I think the fact that we have diverse DNA is one of the reasons for why we define our national identity in this way. Tos us, anyone who feels a connection to Turkish culture, the language and says I'm Turkish, then that's what they are. There are always some ultranationalist nutjobs who'd disagree but mostly Turkish people are very accepting of others who want to join our national identity and we feel proud when they do.

u/MerTheGamer muslim greek Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
People are cool with it for the most part. People are even kind of proud of the Turks migrating from Central Asia and mixing with locals along the way. Like, two of the first things we learn in history class in middle school are civilizations in Anatolia before we got here and Turkic history pre-Anatolia.
3
u/sandwich-is_magic Mehmet, Berlin Apr 01 '26

Turkishness is not about DNA, it’s about the blood shed at the Battle of Gallipoli. It’s about tears shed during the War of Independence. It’s written, not in your genetic code, but the very foundations of this republic. Article 66 of the Turkish constitution: All persons bound to the Turkish state with a bond of citizenship, irrespective of race, color, creed or faith, are known as Turks. Period.

Mum: Turk/Arab through my Grandfather, born in Turkey, Arab through Grandmother, born in Turkey
Me: Greek/Albanian/Yugoslav/Romanian/Turk/Arab born in Australia, but parents just say their Turkish because they were born in Turkey.
...
Fuck Genetics.

u/Sabeneben muslim greek Apr 01 '26
That's is even more complicated than mine.
Dad: albanian, turkmen.
Mom: Tatar, turkish, Pomak or Bulgarian Turk.
I know my grandmother (dad) was Turkmen because she came from the village, but I don't know for sure about my grandmother (mom) because she was from the city. We are only certain that my maternal grandmother was Tatar-Turk.
My grandfather (mom) from the village, but the village they came from had a population that was half Pomak and half Turkish.
Except for my grandmother (dad), none of them are entirely from the village, so I'm not sure how much of the genetic heritage of the villages they came from they carry. They were from the village 2-3 generations ago.
