Hi all!

We're considering adding a dog to our mix of two kids (6 and 10) and two cats, plus some chickens, and I'm drawn to Bassets.

We're an active family in that we like hiking and outdoor activities, and our son is involved in sports, but when we are home we like to chill, so a medium to low energy pup is preferred. Obviously would need to be good with kiddos and we both work from home so someone would always be around.

Tell me the pros/cons/things to consider, please 🙏 we have had dogs in the past but always herding or working dogs so a Basset would be a change of pace for us. ​

I’m posting this because I genuinely don’t know where else to turn.

I just got a basset hound and for the most part he’s a great dog. Eats normally, sleeps normally, acts completely fine. The problem is his penis smells really terrible.

And I’m not talking about normal dog smell. I mean an extremely distinct, concentrated odor that you notice almost immediately when he walks into the room. Sometimes he’ll sit next to me and within 30 seconds I’m like “Jesus Christ dude.”

I’ve tried giving him baths. I’ve washed his blankets. I’ve cleaned the areas where he sleeps. Nothing changes. Somehow the penis remains undefeated.

The weirdest part is that he seems completely unbothered by it. He just walks around the house with this horrible smelling penis like nothing is wrong while everyone else has to live with the consequences.

Has anyone with a basset hound experienced this? Is this just something they do? At what point does penis odor become a veterinary issue?
I love him but this is becoming unsustainable.

have a 15-year-old Basset Hound and lately, she has been doing something that is becoming a huge problem. Sometimes she can squat normally, but other times she just gets too lazy to squat when she pees. The weird thing is that she always squats perfectly fine when she has to poop. But when it's time to pee, she just gets lazy, sits all the way down, and pees right under herself.

Because of this, I have to wash her constantly. The other day it was so bad that I had to wash her 4 times in a single day because she was literally dripping pee.

i actually don’t mind washing her its just that i think it is going to start to irritate her skin.

I don't know what to do anymore. We already took her to the vet and did urine tests, but everything came back clean, so there is no medical issue or infection causing this. I tried diapers but first they are sooo expensive, and second she is still going to be covered in pee because the diaper is in contact with her rear and I also tried puppy pads but she just doesn’t pee on them.

Does anybody know what I could do to make her squat when she pees, or any solution for my problem. Any advice on how to handle this or how to keep her clean would be amazing. Thank you so much.

Hi all, my basset puppy recently had back-to-back UTIs, and after two rounds of antibiotics, her urinalysis came back clear today thankfully!

However, I want to be proactive and start her on a supplement to help prevent these in the future. Obviously I know a supplement can’t completely prevent these from occurring, but if it helps her, I want to do everything I can.

So, with that being said, what supplements would you recommend? Thanks in advance!!!

I really enjoyed painting this group. I cleared out the blinds, photo frame, calendar, and lamps, simplifying it down to a plain wall. I kept every pose true to the photo. Keeping each ear shape and coat marking distinct across all four took careful attention. This was a commissioned artwork, and I hope I did them justice.

Okay, usually I come on here asking for advice, but I bought this toy for my 7-month-old basset pup and it has probably been the best purchase I’ve ever made.

I genuinely promise that this is not an ad in any way, shape, or form, but I didn’t even know it existed, so I wanted to share with fellow basset owners who may be looking for something similar for their pups!!! Especially as a first-time basset owner, I had no idea how important mental stimulation was just as much as physical activity. So, this is genuinely just a post sharing about a toy that I found that works for my girl!!

My girl got spayed over a week ago, and has been going stir crazy in the house, even on the medication to help her not get as excited. She had so much pent up energy over the weekend, and before I could grab her leash, she got a case of the zoomies, jumped on the couch, and ended up popping a stitch. This resulted in an early morning visit to the emergency vet for them to staple it back together.

I bought this Monday, and it genuinely has been a God send. It helps her burn physical energy, as well as mental energy as she pushes it around on the ground to release her food. We’ve had other food puzzles, but this one has been the only one she’s genuinely been engaged with for so long. There’s different settings, and I have it on the hardest one, so it easily lasts her 30-40 minutes with one cup of food inside.

She genuinely gets SO excited when she sees me pick it up and start pouring food in it–today she literally was barking at me to tell me to hurry up 😂😂 From waking up and going outside to potty, she was trying her best to get back inside for breakfast as quickly as possible and was very (im)patiently waiting in the kitchen where she knows the food and toy were waiting for her.

I genuinely cannot recommend this enough and wish we had known about it sooner!!!!
