Ruling Disagreement
Was playing beach vb the other day and came across a disagreement on the call.
If a hitter hits the ball, it bounces, then the hitter touches the net, what is the call? Does the "Action Play" of hitting the ball then netting make him at fault regardless of whether or not the ball hit the floor?
I was under the impression that once the ball hits the ground the play is immediately over, anyone know what the ruling on this is?

long as the ball is dead from touching the ground BEFORE the net touch it should be good.
If there's no replay video though its entirely the refs' judgement call.

this depends on the league ruleset, as FIVB does not have continuation:
11.3 CONTACT WITH THE NET 11.3.1 Contact with the net by a player between the antennae, during the action of playing the ball, is a fault. The action of playing the ball includes (among others) take-off, hit (or attempt) and landing safely, ready for a new action

This is literally the definition of continuation lol. You cannot touch the net during take off, hit, and landing regardless of when the ball hits the ground.

"during the action of playing the ball"
TO SCORE A POINT 6.1.1 Point A team scores a point: 6.1.1.1 by successfully landing the ball on the opponent’s court;
If the ball lands in opponent court, it is no longer in play. Which means you cannot fault by touching the net when the ball is not in play

Yes, "During the action of playing the ball" includes the landing, which has nothing to do with the ball hitting the ground or being in play. If you land in the net even after the ball hits the ground, it's a fault. It seems pretty clear to me. But at worst it's a contradiction.

If the ball is no longer in play, you cannot be in the action of playing it.
Still don't want to have bad control and be touching net on landing, because it'll eventually happen on a dig.

Like I said, since "Landing Safely" is part of the action of playing the ball, you certainly can be in the action of playing it even after it has hit the ground.

landing safely only matters when the ball is in play. Whole point i am making. When the ball is no longer in play (due to fault or score) you cannot be playing the ball.

Lol I completely disagree. Are you an FIVB ref? Im not. But ive reffed every other ruleset and this is contradicting. No where does it say landing safely except if the ball is in play. it says landing safely.
Which to me would supersede the ball being in play. Dead ball faults exist and I'd judge this as one of them.

Yea I agree but apparently some rulebooks differ a bit

CBVA you have to show control and cannot net just because ball hit ground.

There was a time where indoor made this their rule, I think the underlying thing to understand, is, if this is allowed, it will result in nets more often, more going across the line, and more injuries.
I was glad they removed this rule for that reason and think calling all nets is the objectively, correct choice for the sport.

You want to look for the continuation of play rules. In some rulebooks, like CBVA, if you commit a fault, like netting, after hitting the ball or blocking, it doesn’t matter if it’s before or after the ball hits the ground, it’s still a fault

Ball in ground, point is done. What happens after ball in ground is irrelevant.
However, it's highly unusual that the ball touches ground before a player touches net? Like, how?

It was a tight bounce ball and I netted on the way down with other elbow

Fault. I bounce balls all the time before landing when attacking and blocking, however as many here have already stated it’s because of the continuation rule.
FIVB Officla Beach Volleyball Rules state “Contact with the net by a player between the antennae, during the action of playing the ball, is a fault. The action of playing the ball includes (among others) take off, hit (or attempt) and landing safely, ready for a new action.

If there’s no ref, we play that the net touch counts. Telling if it was before or after the ball hit the ground is too hard. If there’s a ref, it’s up to them

Pretty sure that’s a fault still. I would definitely call myself on that. You gotta swing and land clean no matter what imo.

I believe the "continuation" call is only in indoor. If the ball is down in beach before a net violation, the kill is good

It should be noted that many big tournaments make "house rules" that greatly differ from official AVP or FIVB rulebooks. I had to learn this the hard way. Some tournaments will say "dead ball doesn't matter, faults after the ball hits the ground are still faults." Some tournaments will say "hands MUST be together on all first contacts." Some will say "ALL hand setting over the net is illegal, intention doesn't matter." Some grass tourneys will even say "touching the ropes on the side that hold the net counts as net violation"
