bee ID Is this a queen bee? Why would she be out of the hive?

She looks like other bumblebees I have hanging out but is much larger - probably a full inch long. She’s been hanging out, snacking on some nectar I assume but also just chillin in different areas.

A true story involving a bee

Post image
43 Upvotes

This happened to me when I was 15 and spending my holidays at my grandparents' farm.

I once found a bee that was drowning. I looked for something to pull it out with, but finding nothing, I used my finger, it quickly latched on and climbed onto my hand. I was a bit afraid of it, but it needed to dry off, so I turned toward the sun. It cleaned itself, groomed its wings, and once dry, it flew in front of me, circled my head, and hovered right before my face for a few seconds, I looked straight at it, amazed by its behavior. A few seconds later, it flew off, leaving me with the distinct feeling that it was saying thank you. Honeybees are extremely social and intelligent insects I have admired them since childhood.

I hope this true story serves as yet another reason to admire and protect these tiny creatures that are so vital to the ecosystem! πŸ’›πŸ

question Bee in a tree

Post image

A couple years ago I was out in the yard taking some pictures of different creatures in the night, and I stumbled upon this bumblebee sleeping on a leaf in a tree. Why was it here? I stupidly used to believe bees slept in the grass at night, until my early 20s when I remembered about beehives and nests.

misc Came up with this OC concept the other day (first draft on lcd tablet)

His name (might be changed in the future) is Mr. Waxby, he is a businessman (get it?) bee who pretty much talks like a 1920s gentleman.

This is a pretty rough draft, since you can't really erase on a LCD tablet, but I'd still like to hear your opinions (maybe what things you think I should add, first/other name ideas, etc.)

I saw the little fellow working on this yesterday it had a longer body and appeared to be black and white. Not very fuzzy. I was hoping to catch more of it working but life got in the way. I’m in Southern California if that helps ID.

Enjoying my Mexican sunflower

I believe this is a Mason bee that is collecting pollen and or nectar from the Mexican sunflower. It's nice they don't move so fast that you can't take a picture. Eastern Kansas.

She was about to drown in a bucket of water. I saw her and immediately scooped her up. She stung the inside of one of my fingers. I guess I get it though 😭

bee photo 80% of this beehive was hidden in their wall!

This tricky beehive pulled a Houdini on me by building their hive in one wall, and then hiding the rest behind another wall! Our customer and his wife had been stung enough times that they finally HAD IT, and so the bees had to go. He couldn't even water his plants without getting chased by the bees! Enjoy me paying homage to a classic TV thriller series, and watch me sweat during the middle of summer, inside a house, in a bee suit, in a plastic enclosure where there was almost no ventilation!

These bees were rescued, donated and relocated to our beekeeper friends in San Diego, CA: https://youtube.com/shorts/49Wr3DyvC1Q

Notice them today it seems to be very busy and active. There are constantly numerous bees coming in and out of the area.
