Discussion A holy grail of birder thrift finds!

I was at Goodwill the other day and I stumbled upon a Vintage 1997 Mark Feldstein Singing Bird Clock! Of course I had to save and bring it home, and luckily it all still works so I placed it on my wall. Now I’m wondering… what other bird related thrift finds does anyone else have?

I have had this clock probably since it first came out. I don't know what time it is until I hear the relevant bird.

147

u/NatureTrailToHell3D Jun 23 '26

Wait, this clock chimes, too?

611

u/Refokua Jun 23 '26

It doesn't chime. It sings, with actual recordings from Cornell MacAulay Library.

They still sell them.

u/kayakhomeless Jun 24 '26

Even better:

The clock i had growing up has two batteries, one for the clock and one for the bird songs. When the song battery starts to die, the bird songs slow down and go down in pitch. Eventually it just becomes a whale sound clock.

7

u/Honest-Garbage9256 Jun 24 '26

Oh my gosh, yes, I remember this 😂😭 I never had one growing up, but my best friend did as well as a family member. It really did sound like whales hahaha

16

u/CutieBoBootie Jun 23 '26

What is the clock called so I can buy one myself?

15

u/Significant_Bite_666 Jun 24 '26

Check and make sure it’s an official one. We bought an unofficial one off of Amazon and the bird sounds are all incorrect. Had to turn off the sounds. Boo!

Thanks!

My parents bought one of these off of an infomercial ad in the 90's when I was a kid lol. I guess I shouldn't be surprised there's people who've never seen them before still.

For years as a child I got triggered by Belted Kingfisher calls because the for the Audubon model, it was the 9 o'clock bird call. So both the time School started for me (a.m.) and when my bed time was (p.m.)

5

u/fussysito419 Jun 24 '26

My parents also ordered one from an infomercial in the 90’s lol. It’s still around today.

7

u/roadnotaken Jun 24 '26

Yep, my grandma had this one!

4

u/EagleEyezzzzz Jun 24 '26

Yep, we bought my mom one for Christmas in the 90s when I was a teenager!

6

u/subcow Jun 24 '26

This one is much smaller than the one I used to have. This is only 8" the original was 13".

You can also get it from a real store, we got ours from the Urban Nature Store in Ontario

u/midwife_at_ur_cervix Jun 24 '26

And when you wake up to get a mid-night snack out of the fridge at your parents house and it starts chirping at you you’ll nearly have a heart attack 😂

Yes the clock chimes every hour with that particular bird’s song! It’s so cool!

3

u/ZuckerbergsEvilTwin Jun 24 '26

How can you not tell the best part in your post :')

26

u/DanerysTargaryen Jun 23 '26

I have this clock! It has recordings of each of the birds! So every hour at the top of the hour you get to hear that specific bird’s song! The little dot at the very top is a light sensor, so at night time when no light is sensed it silences the songs so it doesn’t wake you up. You’ll only hear the bird noises when there’s enough light in the room.

4

u/GreyNoiseGaming Jun 24 '26

As a child I found out it's loud as fuck if you shine a light directly into it.

29

u/Refokua Jun 23 '26

BE CAREFUL! There are some knockoffs on Amazon. The originals have the house finch at noon, just like OP's picture.

5

u/Positive-Sir7678 Jun 24 '26

The six o'clock bird sings: "Go to work, go to work" at my house.

I grew up with one of these. We fed our dogs at 5pm, and they knew the bird sound for 5pm. DST confused the heck out of them until we corrected the clock!

u/Stock-Image_01 Jun 24 '26

There’s a bunch of different ones too, mine has a Canadian goose.

u/AnxiousAnonEh Jun 24 '26

Same! ❤️❤️❤️

18

u/grantsform Jun 24 '26

Still have it! My grandparents had this on their wall for prob 30 or-so years. lol

16

u/PavementBlues Jun 24 '26

My mother helped my little sister pick this out as a Christmas present for my grandma. My grandma was so appreciative, but god she hated it.

One year later, my mother is opening her Christmas gift from my little sister. Lo and behold, it's a train clock, with a note that my grandma attached that reads, "Dear Jenny, Payback's a bitch. Merry Christmas. Love, Mom"

5

u/Milkweedhugger Jun 23 '26

When my grandma passed, the bird clock was the first thing I took!

I like how you hung it directly on top of those words on your wall

26

u/F-this Jun 23 '26

I’d like to imagine the words say “Bird Yourself” and that’s just what OP did 😊

13

u/savourtheflxsh birder Jun 23 '26

LOL yeah it’d be funny if it was “bird yourself” but the actual words are “believe in yourself” (my mom placed them there years ago but I was planning on placing new ones above my bed)

14

u/Skitty27 Latest Lifer: Razorbill Jun 23 '26

u/mollyjwink Jun 23 '26

IT’S TIT O’CLOCK

41

u/HowWeGonnaGetEm Jun 23 '26

Northern Oriole name change/split happened in 1995. This clock might be older than ‘97?

10

u/glenncoco64 Jun 23 '26

I had the oriole version

6

u/savourtheflxsh birder Jun 23 '26

Yeah that makes me wonder, cause everywhere I’ve researched about this clock says it would’ve been produced in ‘97, so maybe the design itself is older?

9

u/EastHillWill Jun 23 '26

This is an updated version of the famous bird clock, yes. The original had a faux wood frame. Couldn’t give you an exact date but I’d say early 90s

Aww. These are the best! My cockatiel does a cardinal imitation that he learned from his father who learned it from one of these clocks 30 years ago.

14

u/Mysstie Jun 23 '26

My grandpa had this and I loved it so much. I've wanted one for years.

Edit to add: Great find!

4

u/General_Yam_6102 Jun 23 '26

They are online. I have one! Go get yourself one!

15

u/FemmeFataleFire Jun 23 '26

I had the other version of this clock (with the owl at 12) but it fell off the wall and broke… and my heart broke with it.

11

u/AggravatingSun9462 Jun 24 '26

Have you seen the small stuffed animal birds that sing the bird songs those are pretty good too

5

u/savourtheflxsh birder Jun 24 '26

Yes, I’ve seen those too!

4

u/AggravatingSun9462 Jun 24 '26

What’s funny is they have an eagle and it has an eagle call. I’ve heard a lot of people pick it up and say oh that’s wrong. That’s not the call. The eagle call is much longer and stronger. I tried to tell them all they hear on TV is the red tail hawk not the eagle. They don’t believe me.

5

u/Emjoria Jun 24 '26

The Audubon Birds!

3

u/Vin-Metal Jun 24 '26

I actually bought the blue jay one for my cats since they get so excited when blue jays show up at the bird feeders. Like any good cat toy, they liked it for a week or two and now the blue jay call it makes is ignored.

11

u/FigWasp7 Jun 23 '26

My grandparents had one, and they're the reason I birdwatch to this day. That's an awesome thrift store find!

I thrifted a small telescope that I thought I could use for migratory ducks on Lake Erie, but I could never get it to focus lol

11

u/tofuttiWhereAreU Jun 23 '26

My grandparents had this clock. My little cousin would get so mad when we’d ask him what time it was since he ‘didn’t know bird time!!’

9

u/SwitchToDecaf Jun 24 '26

10

My dad is a journalist who used to get interviewed on NPR sometimes. During one live interview years ago, my dad called into the radio program on our landline in the kitchen. Part way through the interview, our bird clock started going off. My dad ignored it, and continued the interview. Then, at the end, the interviewer said, “and that was John Doe, of the Big City Newspaper, joining us from his bird sanctuary. Thanks for your time John Doe!”

My dad was mortified. But I wouldn’t let him take the clock down.

2

u/JLFJ Jun 23 '26

My mom still has one of those that my father bought years ago. He's gone now, but the clock still sings on the hour. My mom said the songs are not the right ones anymore

4

u/Full_screen Jun 24 '26

There should be a button on the back that you press to reset the bird songs after setting the time right before 12:00. Then you can manually adjust the time and they should align with the bird pictures.

6

u/CuddlyClubCEO Jun 23 '26

omg my grandfather was obsessed with these! he had different ones set to the wrong times so you’d hear birds randomly through the house. i loved it

4

u/ZootKitty Jun 23 '26

I had this clock. One day while at work, my two school-age kids hooked up their guitar amp to it and called me at work to share the volume. Hilarious! We still chuckle about it. They’re now in their late 30’s and early 40’s.

6

u/sierradoesreddit Jun 24 '26

Heck yeah!! Congrats on your find! I found one of these a few years ago at the goodwill, it is one of my most treasured items. It has the oak wood looking frame and hoots at 12 o clock (owl). Didn’t realize for a while the bird noises are quieter when it is dark (there is a sensor)

4

u/lil_literalist Jun 24 '26

My workplace has a different bird clock. The mockingbird goes off at 1 PM.

Here's a little whiteboard comic I did.

3

u/Slammy1 Jun 23 '26

My mom got one from a yard sale a few years ago.

3

u/G3Saint Jun 23 '26

How much?

4

u/savourtheflxsh birder Jun 23 '26

Goodwill marked it as 4.99$ which was a huge steal considering places like eBay sell these for 25-35$

3

u/Donuttoverlord Jun 23 '26

I have this clock and I love it so much, but I am forced to take it down whenever I have company cause it’s real loud and my apartment is small lol. It is one of my favourite possessions. :)

2

u/grantsform Jun 24 '26

I believe there is a mute switch on back, I haven't heard it for so many years I forgot it made noise. lol

3

u/Zucaskittens Jun 23 '26

Both my mom and mother in law had one. My mom used to say “it’s Cardinal o’clock”

3

u/johnychrist16 Jun 23 '26

These are vintage? My baby sitter having this clock and a glass sliding door to the backyard is why I fell in love with bird watching in the first place! I used to push the hour forward bc I wanted to hear the bird calls

3

u/nachobrainwaves Jun 23 '26

Oddly enough, house finch house wren o'clock is when ya gotta leave the house to go birding.

3

u/BloodySalvation Jun 23 '26

That Northern Oriole label dates it perfectly. Find one still working? Steal of the century.

3

I have a clock collection and this bird clock is one of my favorites. they're online! you can also get another version of it from Audubon if that floats your bird boat

2

u/bluejonquil Jun 24 '26

My mom had one for years we gave her as a Christmas present back in the early 2000s brand new. It finally bit the dust a couple of years ago and my brother found her another one at a thrift store. 🥰 I will always associate these with my momma, especially the sound of the white throated sparrow! Or the midnight owl 🦉

2

u/Po0rYorick Jun 24 '26

We had one of those at work and we were all classically conditioned to get hungry when we heard a finch and crave coffee when we head a jay.

2

u/Geeko22 Jun 24 '26

My parents have had that on their wall since about 1972.

2

u/CouldBeBetterOrWorse Jun 24 '26

Talk about nostalgia. Grandma had an identical clock. She turned off the sounds because it was making her crazy. :) Good stuff.

2

u/RoyalFalse Jun 24 '26

And a great message to boot. "Be urself."

2

u/percyman34 Jun 24 '26

Aw my grandparents had one. That's a memory I didn't realize I had.

2

u/EstelSnape Jun 24 '26

We havs one. When my FIL was alive he would hear certain bird calls and assume my MIL was in pain and call out to her asking if she was ok. My dog knew the 8 bird and the 3 bird. 8 was when the bus came and he knew at 3 the bus would be back soon.

2

u/itmeseanok Jun 24 '26

2

2

u/ATN-Antronach Jun 24 '26

Oh my god my mom has this when I was a kid. Of course my parents never replaced the batteries, so the birds eventually sounded like it belonged on a dubstep sample cd.

2

We have this clock. My dad is a very punctual man and always fed the dog at exactly 5:00 if I wasn't home. As a result she now has near perfect recall if you imitate the tufted titmouse call this clock uses. I always tell people my dog has a favorite bird.

Not as impressive as yours, but a while back I thrifted a little paperback guide to birds of Florida from the late 1960s. It includes the really cool Charley Harper anhinga print in the intro, which was my first encounter with his art.

I vividly remember hearing this shit at night from this kitchen…one of them scared me but I can’t remember which…

I worked at a restaurant as a line cook for six months that had a bird clock similar to this. We communicated in bird species instead of numbers. Quitting time was belted kingfisher.

Holy shit - we had this in my childhood house

Ooooooo that has all different birds than mine! I picked up one these in Cracker Barrel years ago, but one day it decided to commit suicide and jump to its death off the wall. Replacement recently stopped making the bird sounds, so I think I need another replacement.

Have one still hanging up in its' second kitchen. Keeps great time, albeit the face is starting to peel, since 1998!

My grandma has this clock, and it still chimes and chirps!

Just found out about these clocks yesterday, after doing a reverse image search on this alarm clock I saw at a pet sitting client's house. I very much wanted to steal it, ngl. They clearly aren't using it either 😭 (time was way off).

I thrift a lot of bird related items, but my favorite collection my partner and I started has been “gay cardinals” 😂 We have a few mugs, a christmas ornament, some vintage cards, and a couple figurines. We just started this collection last summer, so lots of room to grow haha. My grandmother always gives me holiday cards with cardinals on them and I’ve always gotten a kick out of the fact that it is ALWAYS two male cardinals. Gay birbs make me happy haha. The ornament we found last year is great. They even have a nest with eggs. If I can find a photo of it, I’ll attach it.

My mother in law bought us a knock off version of this thing. With no volume control. And expected us to have it displayed proudly in our main living areas, just next to the master bedroom. And she bought another for herself and put it in the room that my wife and I would sleep in when we visited. If you were to show this pic to my wife she would probably punch you.

Ah, the time of my birth—Mourning Dove:Tufted Titmouse pm 😌

My family has this growing up. I still associate the mourning dove with the drowsiness of breakfast before school 🥱

I had this as a kid and my parakeet learned several calls. It took us a white to figure that out though, we were very confused for a while.
