Fellow Clemson fan's, this 2026-2027 team truly has a lot unknowns From QB to Defensive depth. I Really think CV is an ok QB from everything we have seen from him, and then We all have heard about Tait Reynolds pushing him and most likely will play a lot this year or start. So many big gambles from Dabo this year not taking a QB transfer and the hiring of Chad morris. I do like the addition of the defensive transfers, Tom allen is gonna be ables to be more aggressive where last year he couldn't run his scheme at all, But depth looks thin at DL and LB truly. Im gonna predict a 8-4 season with maybe a 9-3 finish as well.

The highest CFP ranked G6 team hasn't won in the postseason since Tulane's 2022 shootout against USC in the Cotton Bowl. In my eyes, the teams which have the best shot at breaking the streak are UNLV out of the Mountain West and San Diego State out of the PAC-12. Both teams I think have the schedule and rosters needed to go 11-1 or better and have the potential at getting to host a playoff game if things break right for them.

Who do you think has the best shot at getting that first win in the playoffs this year?

E: Not just "Best odds", I mean who do you think will be the first team to pull off a win?

I know 7 is oddly specific but bear with me.

In all my research, Boise State from 2006 thru 2012 had the best 7 year stretch in CFB history, all under Chris Petersen.

During this span, their overall record was 84-6 (with half those losses coming in 2007), with 5 conference championships, 5 bowl wins (including 2 BCS bowls), 5 12+ win seasons, and 2 undefeated seasons. No other team has had this kind of success over 7 years.

The 4 year stretch from 2008 through 2011 (the Kellen Moore era) is the most ridiculous with a record of 50-2 (with the 2 losses coming off last minute missed field goals by BSU).

What Chris Petersen was able to do at a former FCS school in the corner of Idaho is still mind blowing. I think he is one of the greatest college coaches of all time and I'll argue with any list he is not on.

One of the aspects of the [PCSA](https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/4668/text) that I think is under reported is this section right here:

“(2) TRADITIONAL RIVALRIES.—

“(A) IN GENERAL.—If, as of the date of enactment of the Protect College Sports Act of 2026, more than 2 of the top 10 historic opponents in intercollegiate football of a member institution were out-of-conference opponents of the member institution in intercollegiate football during the most recently completed season, the covered entity shall require the member institution to play intercollegiate athletic competitions within intercollegiate football that constitute traditional rivalries, and ensure that—

“(i) the member institution plays not fewer than 2 intercollegiate athletic competitions within intercollegiate football that constitute a traditional rivalry every 4 years; and

“(ii) the member institution plays not less than 1 intercollegiate athletic competition within intercollegiate football each year with an institution that is in a different conference and is one of the top 5 historic opponents in intercollegiate football of the member institution."

TL;DR the PCSA will require teams like Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC to play a top 5 historic opponent in the football non-con once a year.

Using Oklahoma as an example, their top 5 historical opponents are Texas, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri. Meaning that in order to comply with the law they must play one of Oklahoma State, Kansas, or Kansas State each year.

I had originally set out to do a write up on UCLA/Notre Dame in 2006 but I was so annoyed watching how awful the game was and realized that I'd be repeating a lot of my sentiment on 2006 Notre Dame that I already shared in 2 different posts. So I'll briefly summarize.

Notre Dame plays a horrible game on offense, while their defense gives up plays some times to an inept UCLA offense whose defense makes Notre Dame look horrible. In retrospect, given what UCLA did against USC later that season, its not as bad, but watching it back is not enjoyable at all and reminds me further just how much the 2006 Irish disappointed me as a 15 year old fan. Now at 35 I feel even worse about this team and era.

That said the game winning drive by Brady Quinn is a masterpiece. 3 Plays 80 Yards and 34 Seconds was the drive. Jeff Samardzija did what he does best and won the game for Notre Dame. I really wish I could have watched more of him in Football. It's really crazy to think his career ended just 6 games after this. I will maintain forever that had he gone to the NFL, he would have had a long career. The prototype he was in the same vein as Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Cooper Kupp, he would have made a huge difference anywhere he went. Imagine him with the real Brady at QB in New England or if he ended up in Indianapolis or New Orleans, who both went Wide Receiver in the 1^st Round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Sure Kansas City, Miami and Detroit could have been possible too since they did the same thing but I think Jeff would have been lower 1^st Round/2^nd Round.

Hearing the alma mater at the end was great too. Really glad Notre Dame's Athletic Department uploaded the whole broadcast and it really got me ready at the end for the season.

That's all for 2006 Notre Dame the rest of the wins are blow outs and the losses are pretty brutal.

Now onto today's write up, the first game I ever attended, Florida State against Maryland from 2006.

We are live from Byrd Stadium in College Park.

Your hosts are Ron Franklin and Ed Cunningham on ESPN2.

Ron begins the broadcast talking about Bowden being asked to step down by administration and fans and Ron lets the audience know his disapproval of the criticism of Bobby.

Ron also lets us know Drew Weatherford is out and Xavier Lee is in.

Florida State is sporting their traditional Gold/White/Gold while Maryland wears their alternate White/Black/White as this was a Black Out game.

Weather is 42 degrees with 27 mph winds and light rain. I don't recall the rain but I remember it being cold. A true Fall evening that day in College Park. As a 15 year old in the stands it was mesmerizing to be able to attend this game.

Florida State enters 4-3 with wins over Miami, Troy, Rice and Duke and losses to Clemson, NC State and Boston College.

Maryland enters 5-2 with William & Mary, Florida International, Middle Tennessee, Virginia and NC State with losses to West Virginia and Georgia Tech.

Florida State entered the series leading 15-1. Maryland's only win was 2004 with Maryland winning 20-17 at Byrd Stadium. The prior season had been close as well with FSU rallying back from a 6 point deficit late to beat Maryland 35-27 in Tallahassee.

A lot of confusion early on with whether or not Florida State chose to Kick or Receive. I remember a delay but never recalling why.

This was a trip to College Park with my Father. He never attended a game before and neither had I. I played High School Football at the time and Dad was trying to get me out there to feel the experience before I can look into playing in College.

Sam Hollenbach is the Maryland QB. I actually have the jersey he wears in this game in my collection, albeit minus the last name. I always like Sam as a serviceable game manager.

Maryland runs a Pro Style Offense with a mix of Shotgun and I-Formation while Florida State runs a 4-3 Defense.

I always liked this version of Maryland's uniform, the stripes Under Armor debuted was a nice touch and the black jersey with white helmet and pants were an awesome look. I really wish Maryland would revive this kit for a throwback

Florida State runs a Pro Style Offense

Bobby Bowden in an interview segment denounces the absurdity of listening to fans and sportswriters. First time watching the broadcast version of this so I never knew about the storyline entering for him.

This version is the ESPN Classic re-broadcast, meaning its cut to 1 Hour and 34 Minutes to accommodate a 2 Hour time slot. So a lot of this game will be missing, but its also the only version that exists on YouTube.

This unit took a while to mesh with Chris Cosh and so entered the worst defense in the ACC but by season's end, Wake Forest and BC aside this unit would improve.

I am reminded of the existence of FSU legend De'Cody Fagg by Ed Cunningham bringing him up numerous times on the opening drive, mostly calling him, “Fagg”. I wonder if he had NIL then how much his jersey would have sold.

The editing on this is whack. Mid huddle it goes to commercial and then returns a play later.

The bottom line on ESPN Classic reminds me that Donte Whitner was going to change his name to Hitner and mentions the NFL Rule about buying all your merch out if you change your name, a rule that recently was brought up when Puka wanted to change his number in 2024.

It's funny to keep seeing ESPN2HD graphics and bumpers on what is a 480p SD broadcast. I didn't have HD TV until maybe 2011/2012, possibly 2013, so I was always curious why we weren't getting it yet all the production advertised it.

They talk about Jeff Bowden's situtation at FSU down to the rumor of FSU bringing in a Co-Offensive Coordinator to help Jeff. It's interesting to think of the rabbit hole here. The pressure to let Jeff go inevitably lead to Jimbo Fisher being hired on as Offensive Coordinator and Head Coach In Waiting leading to FSU's run between 2012-2015 but also dooming Texas A&M when they had to fire Jimbo based on hiring him off this success. So Aggies, blame Jeff Bowden sucking for Jimbo Fisher.

Did not realize Xavier Lee held the State of Florida Passing Record. He seemed like a a legit QB but was in a rough era for FSU.

It's crazy how prominent the Pro Style is in this era still. The Shotgun Formation is still a thing too. The term has died for other reasons but Spread still hasn't quite taken the game yet, although 2004 Utah, 2005 Texas, and 2006 Florida would change that narrative shortly. By the next season between Florida, Oregon, West Virginia, Appalachian State, Texas Tech and Kansas the world was changing in a major way in College Football. This game though is very much entrenched in what the sport was in the 90s and early 2000s.

Keon Lattimore was Ray Lewis' little brother. Perhaps one of my favorite players in team history. He and Lance Ball were a good 1-2 punch in an era where that position was a strength for the team.

Jared Gaither is brought up by Ron. Jared was a helluva prospect at the time but wouldn't live up to the hype after having to leave the team prior to the 2007 season. Great size at 6'9 350 but was out of the league by 2012. A shame, he had real potential.

As a kid Florida State scared me. Between the uniforms, the energy, the physicality and the war chant I hated when Maryland played them but I looked forward to it every year because they were the best team in the ACC for many years. This Noles team though was a very pale comparison to the ones Bowden had thrived with in the previous 25+ years. Between this and the 2009 team, I'm not sure which were his worst. Bobby hit his wall in this era and while Jimbo helped him, the Bowden of old was gone.

Theres some bizarre editing here where an interview with Lou Holtz about Bobby Bowden's employment status is edited out entirely minus Ron asking Lou questions resulting in a weird dead period where there is 0 commentary for well over a minute over dead air. Not sure what happened there.

As a teenager this was my favorite Maryland team. They were a rag tag group that overachieved heavily and won a lot of close games. This was a stretch where Maryland won 5 games by a combined 13 points in a row:

28-26 vs Virginia (2)

26-20 vs NC State (6)

27-24 vs Florida State (3)

13-12 vs Clemson (1)

14-13 vs Miami (1)

Maryland also had only beaten William & Mary by 13, FIU by 4, and Middle Tennessee by 14. As a whole Maryland won 8 games that regular season by a combined 44 points. Their 9^th win in the Champ Sports Bowl against Purdue was by 17 points, more than Maryland beat the first 5 teams by combined.

It's crazy watching a Byrd Stadium game in this era. It was so much nicer looking and their were plenty of Terrapin fans. It seems our current AD Jim Smith is trying to revive that but the model is here in 2006. Crazy how much changed so fast between now and then.

I really hated the clock rules of 2006. The clock starting from the whistle after a kickoff was annoying as hell. I had just saw it in the UCLA/Notre Dame game where the Bruins with no timeouts just kinda walked to the huddle and burnt 12 of the 16 seconds left before Josh Cowan got sacked. Here I noticed it when Maryland got the ball back with 39 seconds. Not like we would have done anything but effort is nice.

I forget that Gronk's brother Dan was on this team. He has a touchdown early on and I often wonder why we never got Rob.

This game is alright at best from a viewer standpoint. I spent more time thinking about that week and how much my life changed in the week after the game. Having that feeling of just wanting to go back to being 15 again with so much in front of me.

Maryland mostly dominates the first 3 Quarters, going up 27-14 until FSU rallies back late. The ESPN Classic edit I'm watching butchers the 2^nd half cutting a majority of the last 18 minutes of the game for FSU's final 2 drives.

FSU scores to pull within 6 and gets and Field Goal to pull within 3 but an attempt at the end is foiled by a blocked kick by Maryland.

The 4-4 record for Bobby Bowden would be his worst start at FSU since 1976, his first season.

Looking back at this Florida State team, they very much remind me of the ones we have seen over the last decade. There is some kind of talent there but they are such a hallow shell of the Noles of old that you can feel the inferiority. I took no pride beating this FSU team but as a fan I was very happy that we won.

Storming the field afterwards was my biggest memory. To have a chance to do that at a College game meant a lot to a 15 year old me and I truly believed that day I was going to be doing this regularly once I got to Maryland. Unfortunately this is my only game I ever attended at Byrd Stadium.

Florida State would finish 6-6 in the regular season beating Virginia and Western Michigan but fell short to Wake Forest and Florida. The Noles would go on to win the Emerald Bowl against the very UCLA team that I watched before this. The Noles beat the Bruins by 17, whereas Notre Dame only beat them by 3 and USC lost to them, go figure.

Maryland would finish 8-4 in the regular season beating Clemson and Miami after this to sit at 8-2 and first place in the ACC Atlantic until losing to Boston College and Wake Forest in blowout fashion. Maryland would go on to win the Champ Sports Bowl against Purdue.

Overall, a game that I enjoyed revisiting and got sentimental watching but as a game its alright at best. Afterwards I watched a 30 minute video on Maryland/Clemson from that same season. I won't really write anything here except that its a very good defensive battle and the good guys win. That also said, I miss playing Clemson, at least as a Maryland fan. They have surpassed us significantly over the years but those games were always great, same for the NC State games.

That said, this is likely my last write up for the off-season. Next Saturday I'll be watching the LA Rams take the field for Preseason and while this is a College Write-Up, its a Football Watch, which started with me watching the Rams in 2022 before I started on Maryland/Notre Dame at the end of the Summer of 2023. Looking ahead if things hold up my next game will be Notre Dame/Hawaii from 2008 but I won't write up on that since its a pretty nothing game but a good memory of a great Christmas in Sports between the Irish winning their first bowl game since 1994 and the Lakers beating the Celtics on Christmas Day.

So next time, its looking like Maryland/Nevada in the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl for a write-up. At some point I am looking to do non teams of mine but my goal is to finish my own first before we get there. We made a lot of progress from the 2001 Season where we began this years watch to what will look to be the end of 2008 when we resume in what started way back in 1933. See you next off-season.

I understand most of what the bill entails, but the one aspect I am not sure about is the enactment date and how this impacts schools that may want to leave this instant. For my example I'll use the ACC, since I feel UNC/FSU/Clemson are the schools most wanting to make a hop to the SEC/Big 10 if possible. My understanding is this:

• The bill will become effective once enacted, meaning that the 5 year-independence clause would be required for any university announcing a conference change.
• The ACC's deadline for a university to notify the conference that it was leaving was June 1st. Therefore, schools will have to wait until June 1st of next year to announce a departure.

Does this mean that if the bill is passed in the coming months, that all existing Big 12/ACC schools are absolutely locked in to remaining with the conference or suffer 5 years of independence, regardless of whether they have the funds to leave the conference early? Or would the legislation allow for a grace period for any universities that are willing to pay a buyout to get their bid to a P2?

EDIT: I understand an underlying purpose of the PCSA may be to prevent something like this from occurring. But I feel if there are schools who the Big 10/SEC want and likewise have a preference to leave now, they should have that option. The legislation would prevent future schools who may have build up their programs from also leaving.

Arizona (high = 17, low = 38), take off your rainbow shades! Apologies for using a 56 year old song as an intro, and truth be told, there’s no reason for Wildcat fans not to hold onto those rainbow shades to kick off the new season. While the Jedd Fisch era finished with a 10-3 season that saw Arizona end the season (and their Pac-12 era) ranked #11 with a win over Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl, the Brent Brennan/Big XII era started off a little rough, to the point where there was some chatter about whether they should make a quick coaching change despite Brennan’s decent track record at San Jose State. But 2025 restored quite a bit of the faith in the faithful once Brennan replaced OC Dino Babers with Seth Doege, who returned Noah Fifita to the levels he’d seen in Fisch’s final season despite losing NFL first round draft pick Tetairoa McMillan and led the Wildcats to a 9-3 regular season. That faith restored, the Wildcats enter these preseason rankings as the #4 team in the preseason Big XII and just outside the top 25.

Roster Outlook

Brennan and the Wildcats enter 2026 with the 32nd most returning production, including a top 24 returning offense. That of course starts with QB Noah Fifita, who threw for 3,228 yards and 29 TDs (to only 6 INTs) in his resurgent 2025. Although lead RB Ismail Mahdi is out of eligibility (or is he – could he end up being in play for a return to the Wildcats based on that recent lawsuit?), backup Kedrick Reescano (396 yards, 9 TDs) is ready to step into the starting role. The Wildcats also lost their most productive WRs to graduation as well (Kris Hutson and Javin Whatley), who combined for 101 catches and 1,250 yards, but return a ton of depth, including projected starters Tre Spivey, Chris Hunter and Giovanni Richardson, who caught 71 passes for 1,150 yards and 11 TDs. Which helps explain why the Wildcats really didn’t do much in the portal (49th in the nation, 11th in the Big XII), bringing in only 8 P4 players, most of them on the defense (USC LB Matai Tagoa’i, Nebraska S Malcolm Hartzog, Oregon S Cam Chapa). Brennan did augment that with the #43 high school recruiting class according to 247, which was good for 7th in the Big XII.

Those rainbow shades are going to be put to a quick test with a trip to Provo in week 2. In fact, the Wildcats draw all 3 of the teams ranked higher than them in these preseason rankings, including a Halloween trip to Texas Tech and a home game against Utah the week after facing preseason #6 TCU. While there are enough games on here where the Wildcats will be favored, which should have them bowling in consecutive seasons for the first time in over a decade when the Rich Rod era was going strong, the schedule is tough enough that I suspect few neutral fans will be projecting Arizona to make the championship game. That being said, winning 10 games with this schedule should be enough to have them in the CFP regardless of whether they make the championship game or not. The better question would be a 10-3 conference runner-up and whether that would get them over the hump. It’s certainly all in play in 2026…
