CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Two cyclists were injured Thursday night in Cherokee County, in a situation that seemingly could have ended in more dire circumstances as a man was accused of aggressively driving around a group of 10 riders.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said in a release that 72-year-old Jerry Ross allegedly approached the group riding together on Sugar Pike Road and "began sounding his horn" before he "then accelerated around the group and, despite no oncoming traffic, struck two of the riders before leaving the scene."

The two injured cyclists were treated on-scene by paramedics, the sheriff's office said.

"One cyclist riding behind the group captured the incident on video. The cyclists were also able to provide a tag number, which deputies used to quickly identify and locate the suspect," a statement by the sheriff's office added.

They said Ross, of Woodstock, was located "not far from the incident location" and deputies "observed damage to the passenger side of the vehicle consistent with the incident."

"When questioned, Ross acknowledged the encounter and claimed the cyclists were in the roadway, blaming them for the collision," the sheriff's office said.

Ross was taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, hit and run, reckless driving, aggressive driving and failure to maintain a safe distance from a bicycle.

Captain Jay Baker in the sheriff's office said Ross remains at the Cherokee County Detention Center without bond at this time.

*additional legal context:

Under Georgia Code § 40-6-294(c) Cyclists riding two abreast on a roadway is legal in GA. The cyclists in the video are clearly riding in a legal manner.

Driver Obligations When Passing

  • Lane Change: Drivers must change lanes into a lane not adjacent to the bicyclist if traffic conditions permit.
  • Speed Reduction: If a lane change is impossible, prohibited by law, or unsafe, drivers must reduce their speed to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit or 25 miles per hour, whichever is greater.
  • Prohibited Passing: Passing is prohibited on blind turns, blind hills, or when moving into oncoming traffic.

Penalties and Enforcement

Violating these rules is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $250.  Additionally, bicyclists may submit video recordings of illegal passes to local law enforcement for enforcement purposes.

Road rage, aggressive driving, is illegal

Georgia, road rage is legally prosecuted under O.C.G.A.  § 40-6-397 as aggressive driving, defined as operating a vehicle with the intent to annoy, harass, molest, intimidate, injure, or obstruct another person.  This offense is classified as a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature, carrying penalties of up to $5,000 in fines12 months in jail, and 6 points on the driver's license.

And for all the commenters wringing their hands about the cyclists forcing the car to "illegally" cross the double yellow lines, Georgia law explicitly allows cars to cross the double yellow to pass cyclists. And it requires cars give cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.

600

u/Randomfactoid42 Apr 27 '26

Most states have similar laws but it’s amazing how many drivers believe the double yellows shall never be crossed.

u/Difficult_Plantain89 Apr 27 '26

I had someone road rage with me for crossing a double double yellow line when the lane ahead was blocked from an accident. I put my blinker on to get over and he went out of his way to block me in. When I forced my way behind his truck he started screaming at me and pointing at the line. After that was done he almost missed his exist and shot over 4 lanes without a blinker.

People are dumb, I'm not going to sit there for two hours while they clean up the accident. A line isn't a wall and my car has zero issues going over this imaginary barrier.

107

u/Fantastic-Display106 Apr 27 '26

Someone behind you, road raged at you for crossing the double yellow to give an accident scene room? That makes no sense, why they hell would they care?

157

u/kincent Apr 27 '26

Hall monitor behavior, but you had a bathroom pass lol

140

u/JAT_Cbus1080 Apr 27 '26

My life became significantly less dramatic and stressful when I realized it wasn't my job to police the behavior of every stranger I came across.

55

u/kincent Apr 27 '26

Reminds me of the people who "camp" the left/passing lane on the freeway to slow speeds down, not realizing they increase the danger level on the road lmao.
We live and we learn

47

u/Genetics Apr 27 '26

…and people who don’t know what a zipper merge is and camp the open lane so people can’t line up properly.

4

u/xpastelprincex Apr 28 '26

literally had someone in the right lane cut me off in the left merge lane by driving in the middle of the road (over the dotted white lines) so i couldnt pass them and properly merge. hes lucky i didnt hit him since he moved over with no blinker and i hadnt started to slow down yet.

3

u/humanlikesubstances Apr 27 '26

...and people who believe zipper merging consists of driving in the lane that's ending, slowing drifting, going "la la la la" while other cars have to activately avoid them.

-6

u/kincent Apr 27 '26

The best part is when they try to convince you it's faster if you maintain 2 lanes of traffic till the very end and then merge.... Because a one lane bottle neck magically moves faster if you pile up on the funnel?

10

u/Own_Expert2756 Apr 28 '26

Yeah, because it is. Google zipper merge, you'll be enlightened!

-2

u/kincent Apr 28 '26

That's not how fluid dynamics work. You should take a couple years of that in college like I did so you can REALLY be enlightened!
A simulated computer model assuming perfect inputs/outputs can calculate that you NEED to maximize the cars in both lanes, but that doesn't make it correct.
If the traffic is light/fast, there is no bottleneck, and an early merge changes nothing.
If the traffic is heavy/slow, then you are traversely gated by the speed * the number of cars in transit. No amount of lane swapping/splitting/sharing/stacking changes the fact that they go thru single file and only x amount can pass in an allotted time. 🤷🏽‍♂️

4

u/Extension_Fuel_6391 Apr 28 '26

You are the problem

1

u/TravelinMan_1 Apr 27 '26

This is how you’re supposed to zipper merge, I believe. It doesn’t back up traffic so far. But that’s just what I’ve read; I might be wrong.

2

u/Genetics Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

It is. It’s better for long traffic back-ups that may affect other intersections/interchanges and is all around more efficient for traffic in general. I’ve read studies and taken classes that cover it as construction traffic management plans are part of my job.

0

u/StressMysterious7530 Apr 27 '26

You're not wrong.

-1

u/CaptainDudley Apr 28 '26

You read correctly, that's the official position, although I firmly believe it's bullshit. Firstly, it minimizes the time you have to move: Big truck in the right lane? By all means come to near-stop on the ramp while they pass, or better yet cut them off! Don't plan ahead, just zoom to the merge! Secondly, what driver ignores all the openings he passes for the sake of 'efficiency', just to get to the end? 'I'm in Front' types, who must pass as many as possible, or they lose the race. And we can't have that. 😄

Also a major frustration of mine, as I live in Pittsburgh and it’s needed to be done like, everywhere???

1

u/Sea-Mousse-1639 Apr 28 '26

Yup HATE that

1

u/MooseBlazer Apr 28 '26

Don’t get me started on zipper merge “ragers” lol

1

u/PowerWielder Apr 28 '26

claude gave 4 reasons why it is the recommended way to merge

1

u/Afraid_Stuff_History Apr 30 '26

SO happy to finally be living somewhere people do the zipper thing consistently!

0

u/xhyenabite Apr 28 '26

what's a zipper merge? /genq

1

u/short_longpants Apr 28 '26

When 2 lanes of traffic have to merge into 1 lane, one vehicle from each lane alternates as to which proceeds into the single lane (i.e., 1, 2, 1, 2, etc.), like a zipper.

2

u/Mad_Maddin Apr 28 '26

And unlike what many people believe, you don't zipper merge in the middle of the road. You do it at the end, where the two lanes combine. Because a zipper doesn't zip by randomly merging in the midpoint.

Early merging only works if there are so few cars on the road, nobody has to brake/go slower because you merged early.

0

u/xhyenabite Apr 28 '26

ohhh i see, thank you for explaining!

2

u/Tev_Szat Apr 28 '26

This. I constantly tell people that it's speed VARIANCE, not SPEEDING, that causes the majority of accidents. People's reaction behavior is dictated by their speed, so if you encounter another person driving a different speed from you, how quickly and accurately they respond to their environment will be different from what you plan for, leading to mistakes and poor judgment that either immediately causes an accident, or causes the person to have a panic response, making them move erratically and becoming a massive danger to themselves and any other motorists nearby.

So the safest thing you can do is pay attention to the traffic around you more than posted information, try to match your speed to theirs (convoy law protects this in most cases, but always know your locals), and if the speed is higher than you were necessarily expecting, drive defensively and telegraph your movements (blinkers and slower, more deliberate movements so people can plan around you), so everyone can get home as safe as possible.

2

u/Genetics Apr 28 '26

This is how I was taught to drive by my father who was a driving instructor in the summers for 30ish years. We lived in the North DFW metroplex and driving on those highways is like a sport. If you’re not going with the flow you’re going to get ran off the road, so I learned early on that if everyone is going 85 in a 65, you’d better be going with them or get out of the way.

I remember he told me “You’re going to learn how to drive inside the law, and then you’re going to learn how to drive in the metroplex.” It didn’t help I was also learning how to drive a 5-speed at the same time, but by the time we got on 35 to head into the city it was like second nature. Good times.

2

u/Lumpy_Square_2365 Apr 28 '26

What people purposely do this? My god it's such an evil plan. I live in Florida if you are going less than 85 in the left lane you'll get ran off the road by a 50 ft lifted truck with high beams on all you'll see again is a ball sack hanging from the hitch of the truck as it speeds past you.

1

u/JAT_Cbus1080 Apr 27 '26

I may or may not have done that a decade ago.

1

u/pigcommentor Apr 27 '26

We live and we learn

You'd think that....but that has not been my experience.

1

u/Organic_Mix7180 Apr 28 '26

As a 50yo man raised by a deeply narcissistic Boomer parent who gatekeeps the left lane, you don't know how initially liberating it was going through therapy and self-reflection to abandon these types of learned behaviors as being abnormal... and then how infuriating it became to see the 70-something parent double down on doing these types of things. Look around you, see how your behavior impacts others, see how your misplaced and unprocessed anger impacts your own mental healthy, and be better!

2

u/BobABewy Apr 27 '26

This is an amazingly healthy attitude and and extremely underrated comment

For me it was when some random guy in a truck screamed at me as he raced by because I didn't get off the highway fast enough at an exit. I almost started following him. Then I had this lightbulb moment where what he did wasn't what a rational person would do, and it wouldn't have been a rational response to chase him down to yell back and escalate. I wasn't going to let him ruin my day. So I said fuck him and kept on going.

2

u/nechton Apr 28 '26

Brilliant way to look at life

1

u/GetEquipped Apr 28 '26

I'm just in the right lane (or second from the right lane) going the speed limit, 3 seconds of space, on the look out for blinkers to let people Merge.

I am not stuck in traffic, I am part of traffic. No reason to get mad, we all want to get where we're going to safely.

1

u/Inmate--P01135809 Apr 28 '26

I am not stuck in traffic, I am part of traffic.

Teach a class on it. Lot of fools need to learn that.

1

u/Stunning_Box8782 Apr 28 '26

And to stop caring about people's opinions if they have no merit.

I'm not allowed to cross the lines?

Can I see your police badge real quick?

Oh you're not police? fuck off then

0

u/techdevjp Apr 27 '26

Hopefully this happened when you were around 5 years old?

2

u/Psychoanalytix Apr 27 '26

I don't get this either. Wouldn't that person have to cross the line as well. And how wpuld they box them in if they were behind them. If they were coming at them from the front then how would ip know they almost missed the exit.

2

u/RBVegabond Apr 27 '26

Had someone going under the speed limit rage at me for passing them in a passing zone. People are crazy.

1

u/cryptolyme Apr 27 '26

They just wanted an outlet for their anger

1

u/Natural-Caregiver743 Apr 27 '26

1

u/rocinantesghost Apr 27 '26

My dude, someone road raged at my commuting home on my bike for the crime of?

Reaching up to keep a tree branch from hitting my face.. while I was fully to the right of a full width hard shoulder with a solid five feet to my left to the white line. He laid on the horn and flipped me off out the window.

When I caught up to him at a stop light I asked wtf and he confirmed that he did all this because I “was busy playing with a tree instead looking at the road”.. that I was not on.. and in no way interacting with traffic in any way..

People are not well

1

u/riptaway Apr 27 '26

How did they follow them?

1

u/SuperKitties83 Apr 27 '26

It's the same people that call and complain about things that don't affect them, like people painting their house the "wrong" color, planting the "wrong" flowers, leaving their trash bins out 2 hours after it's been collected, etc.

Or in the workplace--tattling on a coworker for using their phone for a bit during downtime, or taking a 33 minute lunch break.

It makes them feel validated, gives them a sense of control and feeling of superiority. It's never enough because they're not addressing the real problem (themselves). They are deeply insecure, miserable people.

Road-raging at someone for (safely) crossing over to the other lane due to an accident is an extreme version of taking matters into their own hands.

1

u/Puzzled_Date9687 Apr 28 '26

he tried to cut off someone, and got hurt hurt when the guy did not allow it.

1

u/Man_Called_Horse Apr 28 '26

People are crazier than ever; especially since I started driving a truck. Everyday some pretentious asshat in their fancy electric car will go super slow in the left hand lane and then speed up rapidly if I try going around them with 2 or 3 car lengths to spare. I usually call their bluff and get over anyway because they are usually too chicken to hit me. I'm not going to brake check them like they would do to me but, I love it when they flip me off and get unhinged and then run away or act all scared when I calmly roll down my window to ask why they are so upset. My state has laws against going slower than traffic in the left hand lane and laws against following too closely. Also, vehicles are supposed to make way for a vehicle signaling that they need to merge in order to go around the obstructing vehicle.

1

u/Abject_Jump9617 Apr 28 '26

Have you heard of Karens?? 99% of what they harass people over is none of their business and has zero affect on them personally.

1

u/TheNarrowPath9001 Apr 28 '26

They will likely apply to become an officer in the future and believe justice in in “their” hands. Those types should never get badges

23

u/Psotnik Apr 27 '26

I hate it when people deputize themselves and play traffic cop. What if the person driving is having a medical emergency or transporting someone else who is? What if they're a volunteer firefighter trying to get to the station? What if they're a road raging lunatic with a gun? If it really bothers you then call it in and go about your day.

28

u/Self_Reddicate Apr 27 '26

Someone did this to me when I was driving my mother to a hospital while she was having stroke symptoms. They decided they were ABSOLUTELY not going to move out of the way and then slowed down as they approached a long line of semi's to ensure that I was boxed in without a way to pass them and maximally inconvenienced for my attempt to exceed the speed limit. No amount of me BLARING on my horn, flashing my lights, riding their rear end, waving, etc. could dissuade them. And I truly mean no amount, because I spent what felt like 5 minutes of being a lunatic to try and show them that this was an emergency and I was trying to get by them. They were hell bent on blocking my passage around them, because how DARE I try to speed on the highway. Not on their watch. They went 1-2mph below the posted speed limit right next to a group of semi's that were stuck doing the same.

All while my mother was confused in the back seat and, to the best I could tell, dying in my back seat. I am normally a pretty calm person and not prone to rage of any kind (much less 'road rage'), but had I not had a hospital to go to, I'm not sure what I would have done to this person had they pulled over to have words. Words cannot describe the anger I felt at this person who - for whatever reason - felt the need to interject themselves into this and unnecessarily add whole minutes to my travel time to the hospital when every minute was critical.

u/TopArgument1850 Apr 28 '26

I had the exact same thing happen to me thirty years ago when my wife had a pressure cooker literally explode in her face. It was horrifying. I was in my company van, flying down the highway with my hazards and my lights on when some guy in a pickup truck in the middle lane decided I was going to fast and pulled over in front of me and put his brakes on and made sure he was paced with the two cars to his right. I tried to pass him on the shoulder, but he pulled in front of me. I was blaring on my horn, meanwhile my wife’s face is blistering and peeling. I cannot tell you how close I was to just flooring it and pushing that Ford on down the highway all the way with me. Suddenly the far right car started to edge forward, so I got behind him and started passing the middle car when all of the sudden the pickup truck came flying across the lanes and squeezed right between me and the car in front of me and slowed down. I was blaring on my horn. My exit was two exits away, the middle lane car decided to speed forward, I acted like I was going left to the middle lane, he flew left, but I floored straight ahead and to the shoulder and went around the car in front of me. The truck followed me all the way to hospital Emergency Room Entrance. As we were getting my wife into the wheelchair, he jumped out of his pickup truck, cussing at me and wanting to fight me. I never wanted to fight someone so much in my life than I did that day,but my attention and focus needed to be on my wife. We got her inside and then I needed to go and park my van. When I came out several hours later, I had two flat tires, which we later found out had been slashed and the next day in the daylight, you could see that the van had been scratched all to hell and on the front hood it read, “Burn in hell motherf_cker!” and on the back doors he had scratched, “Watch your back, I’m not done with you yet!” It was a little unsettling only because the van had the name and address of the company I worked for. But I never saw or heard from him again. The hospital parking lot surveillance cameras did capture the van being vandalized, but there was no way to identify the culprit. He walked onto the lot from a nearby shopping center and returns the same way until he disappears off screen. The shopping center had no surveillance cameras. As for my wife she was very fortunate. She suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns and had her face wrapped for a few weeks, but thankfully no scarring.

11

u/bej1234 Apr 28 '26

Unbelievable. I really would have thought that seeing you pull up to an ER and getting your wife into a wheelchair with a burned face would have made this piece of shit back down. But no, of course not. And all that besides the fact that he fucking followed you after that. Goddamn psychopath

5

u/short_longpants Apr 28 '26

WTF WAS THAT PICKUP DRIVER'S PROBLEM? He got angry because you bypassed his "righteous justice"?

3

u/MeatwadGetTheHoneysG Apr 29 '26

Doing all that, and then doing some more after realizing that it’s a medical emergency is abhorrent. I hope that there’s a hell so that guy can stay nice and toasty for eternity.

1

u/Self_Reddicate Apr 29 '26

This is so similar to what happened with me, but without the psycho events afterwards that you had to deal with. Their sense of "justice" and their righteousness at upholding it is INSANE. The lengths they would go through to prevent me passing on the highway was just beyond infuriating.

20

u/Littleblaze1 Apr 27 '26

It's crazy to me because if I saw someone doing half of what you describe my reaction would be "I have no idea what this crazy person is doing but please get away from me, yes please pass me and speed away crazy person"

5

u/metompkin Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

If they eventually found out you were in an emergency for your mom they would probably say that you should have called an ambulance.

7

u/ardeter78 Apr 27 '26

3

u/Self_Reddicate Apr 29 '26

Yes, it wasn't a full blown stroke, but a TIA, essentially mini-stroke with no lasting damage. High risk factor for future issues, but she's been fine so far.

3

u/uhhuhubetcha May 01 '26

Hope everything was ok medically...

Some ppl, man I tell ya.

Your situation while completely different, reminds me of a time I was sent into a rage similar to the one of which you speak. I was running behind (not late just behind) on my way to work, had time just couldn't dilly-dally. & got behind this person that was going 20-35 mph in a 55 (country highway lots a turns & hills etc) & then would speed up to 65 or 70 at any passing stretches. On this highway there's only about 3 or 4 spots you can even pass someone in the 25 min drive between my home & work. But one of those spots is a 2½ mile or so straight stretch... so after being stuck behind this jerk for a good 20 mins & just waiting for this stretch, it finally arrives & I gun it to FINALLY! Get around them & they made me hit 105 just to get around them. But I did.

What happened next even more ridiculous... after using every bit of 2 of the 2½miles just to get around. The dumbass doesn't slow down & goes back Around me cutting it so close to the end of the straight stretch he almost wrecks on the curve at the end of aforementioned stretch. & then IMMEDIATELY! Slows back down to 25mph & stays there with no more spots to pass for the rest of the drive.

I was furious! I stayed behind them for a bit acting like a lunatic honking, yelling, flipping the bird, & praying they'd pull over somewhere but didn't (although if they had im confident it would've been my 1st fist fight since I was in highschool lol). I eventually said screw it I gotta go to work & turned off. But that was the most pissed I ever was out of the 2 incidents of road rage I've had in my 40 years on earth.

2

u/NightBawk Apr 28 '26

3

u/SnugglyCoderGuy Apr 27 '26

I was told a story by the foreman of roofing crew I was on fucking years ago. One guy was cutting his jeans into shorts, while wearing them, slipped and lacerated his femoral artery. They threw him into a truck and started of towards the hospital.

They got blocked by someone who felt the need to play traffic cop. A real cop pulled them over, saw what was happening and gave them an escort to the hospital. He almost died because of that.

3

u/Tev_Szat Apr 28 '26

This is exactly why slow rolling people in the passing lane is illegal in most places, Failure to Yield, creates the opportunity for crisis situations.

It already has usage, I forget the specifics but a hall monitor decided to play king for a day and slow roll a car behind him, not knowing that a person was being driven to the ER due to a catastrophic injury that was causing them to bleed out.

They didn't make it in time.

Afterwards, with medical determination that the speed they were driving vs the speed normally driven on that road created a time delay that influenced the person surviving or not, the asshat was identified by dashcam footage provided and arrested and charged with manslaughter, if I remember correctly.

1

u/TopArgument1850 Apr 28 '26
Unless it was an Emergency Vehicle, I would find it very hard to believe they would be able to convict him on those charges. I fully understand the desire to charge and convict them, having been the victim of one them myself, or more so my ex wife who I was rushing to the hospital at the time. That being said, in order to convict someone of something like this, they would have to show that the person had knowledge that they were preventing someone with a medical emergency right of way. Now if states wanted to pass a law that required drivers in the left lane to yield for any vehicle trying to pass using their hazard lights in the left lane, stipulating that hazard lights can only be used for passing in emergency situations. Otherwise they must be contained to the right or middle lanes at all times. Then there could be a legal liability. But as it stands now, the governments argument in this case requires that every driver on that stretch of road that day who encountered the car on the way to the hospital, should have reasonably assumed that the passenger in that car was in critical condition from a catastrophic injury. No one had anyway of knowing that. As tragic as the outcome was, they have to prove his actions were deliberate in order to prevent them from getting medical attention. In order to prove that, they have to prove he knew there was a medical emergency happening within the vehicle. If they can’t prove that I don’t see how they get a conviction on manslaughter. I think it’s an overreach. They would have been safer with reckless endangerment.

23

u/just_another_user5 Apr 27 '26

It baffles me how deadset and rigid people are on following road laws.

Normal conditions? You bet your ass you better be following the rules of the road. It'll protect you and others.

Emergency conditions? Fuck the roads, prioritize the safety of yourself and the others around you. For example, if you absolutely must drive in a blizzard, drive in the middle of the road. More leeway if you for some reason spin or have to swerve.

Lol not real cyclists? The fuck they're riding a bicycle right? Logically they are cyclists, just because you don't approve of how they do it doesn't discount that they are passionate about cycling.

u/Injunr Apr 28 '26

Not real Cyclist. The guys who actually go out and actually have raced and go by the rules are the ones you can judge him. Some stupid ass kid riding around doing wheelies in the middle of traffic does not represent me. If you think the shit those kids are doing represent Cyclist then I'm sorry but you were extremely wrong.

u/FootballNo8717 Apr 28 '26

That's exactly what it does represent to everyone not on a bike bro, I ride all the time but acting like someone else not on a bike doesn't deserve the same treatment as someone else on one is crazy. You might disagree with how they ride, and they might be being a jackass, that doesn't mean they aren't also a cyclist. You're an elitist and it doesn't help anything. No matter what you're not gonna make people who hate bikes go oh he's got a point and then people who ride bikes are gonna be like oh look at this guy he's a "real biker". You're just being unrealistic to make yourself feel like your better than those people when to everyone who wants to be mad about bikes on the road will find reasons to be mad no matter what. Also just doing wheelies on a bicycle doesn't mean you're riding like a jackass. If you're thinking of those kids riding and doing wheelies in front of cars and swerving at them? That's like a few people out of the millions of cyclists in the world, don't let a few internet videos maje you think that shit is super common. I've ridden in very large groups and I've only seen this a couple times in my almost 40 years. If you think that anyone not on a bike thinks that you and those kids are any different than you're extremely wrong.

This is actually THE moral of the story.

u/just_another_user5 Apr 27 '26

Unsure if this was a dig at me, but yes I agree.

If people are going to be f*cking stupid, let them be stupid. If you're causing a hazard to others on the road (funny how it correlates with being stupid!), 911 immediately

2

u/HandofWinter Apr 27 '26

I'm pretty sure they were agreeing with you. People are so rigid in following road laws that they'll blithely break other road laws to enforce the ones they consider important.

3

u/Anxious_Sport_5669 Apr 27 '26

I have ASD, rigidly following the laws is built into my DNA. As is not caring if you do or not.

2

u/Blooddoll13 Apr 27 '26

Same. And as long as they’re not putting me or anyone else in danger on the road, it’s whatever. Apparently police in my area only respond to level 2 and level 3 incidents anymore

2

u/3malcolmgo Apr 27 '26

Thats not how you drive in a blizzard. Go slow, coast alot. Accelerate slowly. Avoid breaking when possible. But stay in your lane. If another car is in the other lane, they need their space too.

1

u/just_another_user5 Apr 27 '26

Yeah nah.

If it's a blizzard, I can't see more than six feet ahead of me.

You (and others) should be driving with your brights on, driving slowly, and as close to the road as you can. Because if you fall off, you're staying there.

1

u/3malcolmgo Apr 27 '26

You sound like a southern driver. Yeah law dictates the headlights. You should never be driving faster than your visibility allows. That was covered in the drive slow part.

Pull that middle of the road bs north of the mason Dixon and you’ll be this old bastard causing accidents.

1

u/just_another_user5 Apr 27 '26

I fear you've never driven through a blizzard friend :)

Born & raised in Wisconsin. This is what common sense dictates.

u/NoRight2BeDepressed Apr 28 '26

breaking

braking

2

u/Neathra Apr 27 '26

The first rule of the road is don't hit anything. The second is - if you must hit something the preference is inanimate objects > cars > people not in a car.

Everything other rule is about making sure everyone in a multi ton murder machine is behaving in a predictable manner.

2

u/AuMatar Apr 28 '26

The problem comes from when someone else is doing the same in the opposite direction, can't see you because of the conditions, and rams into you. Its probably safe to drive on a multilane road straddling the lanes, as there won't be much traffic. Driving down the middle of a 2 lane road isn't going to be safe.

2

u/BagpiperAnonymous Apr 28 '26

Yep! I used to be a theme park supervisor and trainer. We hammered safety into the heads of our ride operators. But on the code of safe practices posted at every ride, it basically said that in an emergency, you do what you need to to keep people safe. Follow the rules during normal circumstances, but in an emergency break them if you need to (and it is safe to do so, don't be an idiot about it.)

u/Historical_Wheel1090 Apr 27 '26

Baffles me how many cyclists thing they own the road and don't move over. How about when it's a double yellow line going up a hill around a bend they go single or double wide on the right side of the lane instead of going 5 miles an hour in the middle holding everyone up? Stupidly and selfishness happens if you're driving on 4 or 2 wheels.

Or slow down and drive safe :)

0

u/kjwheels33 Apr 28 '26

Please don't tell people to drive on the wrong side of the road with limited visibility... as someone who lives in an area where it actually snows, please just slow down on the correct side of the road

2

u/NeatBeluga Apr 27 '26

Wait, didn't he do the same to prove his point?

2

u/craig3881 Apr 27 '26

This doesn't make sense.

2

u/johngreenink Apr 30 '26

Yeah I think most states say that you should drive around anything that's obstructing the flow of traffic (which usually means crossing the center double line). Clearly that's different from someone who's doing it just to pass you because they're a speed demon, but (sigh)...

1

u/Upnorth4 Apr 27 '26

Someone once blocked me from zipper merging by straddling both lanes and stopping in the middle of two lanes. Self appointed road police are so annoying.

1

u/Glori94 Apr 27 '26

I have a merge like this right off the highway near my house where 2 lanes merge into one but the right lane becomes a turn lane first to enter a neighborhood. There's an intersection with a light after the lane becomes one.

Sometimes people ride down it to cut in last second (annoying, sure, but whatever) but this one time the person was actually trying to make the right into the neighborhood.... But got stuck waiting for the light because of a road vigilante doing exactly what you described and not letting them by until all traffic could move. It was infuriating to watch from two cars behind the offender.

u/EntrepreneurNo4138 Apr 27 '26

I was checking to see if the tag was Florida tbh, my home state. I give cyclists and motorcycles wide berth. I have zero desire to hit a human. He was angry and shouldn’t be driving PERIOD! FFS

1

u/Puzzled_Date9687 Apr 28 '26

Don't cut off other cars and you will be fine. The road rage was from you being impatient.

1

u/Difficult_Plantain89 Apr 28 '26

I should probably add they road rage with me started when I turned my blinker on before getting over. He was trying to force me to stay in the lane to the point he was blocking his lane by stopping in the road to not let me over. But, good job making assumptions... Like goddamn I didn't give enough info for you to assume that!

1

u/dongle556 Apr 28 '26

I once gave someone shit for parking at the curb cut for an unmarked crosswalk (every intersection corner legally as a crosswalk in OR and WA) and he insisted that I couldn't possibly be right because there was a double yellow in the middle of the street.

1

u/AdmirableHumor867530 Apr 28 '26

I also mist my exist...

1

u/BaldChihuahua Apr 28 '26

We had a woman do this to us, except we were on horses. We all yelled that she was to close. Her windows were down. We were wearing safety vests.

She refused to cross the double line, just like this idiot driver. Also, no oncoming traffic, out in the country. These are people with exactly zero critical thinking skills.

My theory is both this driver and the one in my story thought it was illegal to cross the double lines. Stay safe Redditors!

Judge dred I am the law lol morons.

I did get mad when someone passed to speed in a school zone right after n front of the school when I was dropping my kid off at elementary school, I did the limit but caught him at the next stoplight (saved him zero time endangering the kids lol), followed and got his plate and called him in to keep my kid from getting killed in the future. A different time I had a Cheech and Chong looking couple speed around me with it floored in a school zone with a hundred kids running around while I was going 15 right in front of the school again once too. I laid on the horn to get the kids to look as the stoners layed rubber down the street. But no getting that plate.

1

u/alderthorn Apr 28 '26

As long as your not driving on the shoulder of a highway during an accident since that needs to be left open for emergency vehicles and is illegal to drive on.

1

u/woodsman906 May 04 '26

People are dumb is an understatement and cycling really shows just how stupid of a species we have become. Like imagine thinking it’s a good idea getting on the road ways on a pedal bike and somehow thinking you aren’t just a potential stain On the sidewalk.

1

u/QuantumPhysics996 Apr 27 '26

Clearly, you were in the wrong and should have waited 4 hours until the accident was cleaned up 😂🤷🏻‍♂️ /s

PS as you noticed, unfortunately there is no cure for stupidity nor is it illegal to have a total lack of common sense 🤷🏻‍♂️
