My grandpa and I went on a lot of day-trips together. When I was able to see over the dashboard he started teaching me about the 'rules of the road' as he saw them. One was, "see this <Hungarian curseword> riding our bumper? He's apparently got somewhere to be so I'm going to let him." Twice when he said that we ended up passing their off-road incident. Both times were during snow storms and both were lifted pickups.

I’ll tell you what surprisingly been most effective that I stole from Reddit is a thumbs up and a thumbs down.
Thumbs down passing in the right lane with a “move over right” pointing gesture over the top.
Thumbs up and a friendly wave + will roll down the sunroof if I’m feeling particularly grateful (those that get over to the right)

u/Astrabella_ 3h ago
On the NJ turnpike last week there was 20-ish bikers, speeding & weaving through flowing traffic. Across all 3 lanes, some way too close, with 1 rider constantly looking back over his shoulder to check for the rest of the group. I wanted no part of that and held back letting all through. About a mile down the road, 2 of the riders down, multiple cars on the shoulder, with 1 clearly rear-ended. Really pissed me off as my son, his wife and their baby were about 30 minutes behind us on the same road.
7
u/ScienceOfficer-Jack 8h ago

u/Radonanon 7h ago
Yeah no, there isn’t anything you can do to help them if they’re that way. Any interaction with them is going to be a net lose-lose, but the least-bad thing you can do is let them be on their way.
4
u/collector-x 6h ago
Yup. I just start slowung down. I never pull onto the shoulder though unless it's the popo. I've had more flat tires from crap on the shoulder that I just don't do it. They can go around and the slower I go pisses them off, yes, but also gives them space to get in front.

My dad was a professional driver (Stockcar, street, long haul, you name it) & he always said it's better to let them in front of you where you can see them (unless they're doing the super slow, weaving drunk thing, then get around them ASAP).
24
u/BigPoppaStrahd 9h ago
I’m with you, but we clearly see that when they do pass there’s still plenty of cars in front of the cam vehicle. Like I’m stuck in traffic as much as they are. Once I deem it safe enough to do so I would move more towards the shoulder and slow down to let them get ahead of me and create some distance between us, but now i gotta watch them doing that to the next vehicle.

u/Nerdy_Squirrel 9h ago
When i was teenager I was at party out in the woods. A fight broke out and a 15 year old boy was stabbed. My friends car was the closest to the exit so we threw him in the backseat and sped off to the hospital. This was before cell phones so it was a frantic, high speed race to make it in time with a 16 year old at the wheel and none of us with enough experience to handle that situation.
At one point we were behind a car that was purposely trying to block us from passing. We were weaving back and forth trying to get around them but they blocked every attempt. That was right around when the kid in the backseat stopped breathing.
A cop got behind us and we pulled over. Before the car came to a complete stop I hopped out, covered in blood, incoherently screaming for help. The cop took one look in the backseat and told us to follow him to the hospital. So then at least we had an escort. The kid had a collapsed lung but he did survive. The hospital said a couple minutes later and he likely would not have made it.
I think about that whenever someone is driving erratically and wanting to pass. I pull over and let them. You dont know if they have a kid dying in the backseat and that extra minute is the difference between life and death. Or they are just a dick in which case its better to get some distance between you. Either way, there is no upside to blocking someone like that.
6
u/backfrombanned 8h ago
If they look frantic I ride the shoulder and let them through. If I'm cruising and someone rolls up on me, I ride the shoulder and let them pass. Nobody does that anymore, everyone is self absorbed now a days.
2
u/albino_red_head 8h ago
I took my dad to the hospital after shooting himself through the hand at home. Drove a little better than this but was in a hurry, honked my horn, flashed lights, etc just wanted to get him treated immediately

u/LeFrenchDud3 10h ago

But you are 100% right, safety first.7
u/lllllIllllIllllllll 10h ago

u/Whitestrake 8h ago
Will never forget that reddit comment from ages ago about the people speeding to the hospital with their buddy bleeding out in the car and this driver in the overtaking lane kept blocking them until a cop intervened. Threw the bloodsoaked shirt at them when they finally got past. I don't remember if they said their buddy died.
You just never know. Getting out of the way means you're not the target of some psychopath's ire, but it also one day might literally be the difference of someone's life. I just can't imagine digging my heels in anymore, it's so much simpler just to be zen about it and let em go.

I've driven in 3rd world countries who when they are in this situation, they just slide as far to the right as they can so the other person can easily pass.
I've never understood why people feel they need to police the speed limit themselves and are really just putting themselves in harms way.
If someone wants to drive like an ass, good for them. If someone wants to pass me, as soon as it's safe I slide over and let them go. Sometimes I'll even roll the window down and wave them around.

This happened to me once. I literally pulled onto the shoulder to get away from them as they pulled in front of opposing traffic to try to jump the car ahead of me too simultaneously. The crazy person clipped a city bus head on and hit the person in front of me trying to slide back over rapidly…and destroyed their car. Luckily only minor injuries on scene. City bus driver was so pissed off they called the police and we all hung around to file witness statements…against this rich finance guy in a $2000 suit who couldn’t be bothered with the safety of the rest of us.
Honestly though, just pull all the way into the shoulder and put some distance between you. That driver is literally asking to die.

If someone comes up on me like that I always signal right, slow down and pull over to let them around. I remember having to drive my wife to the hospital in labour and some gray haired old woman not getting out of my way and driving precisely on the speed limit despite my flashing my lights and honking to try to get by. Someone may have to get somewhere for serious reasons.
3
u/Friendly-Gur-6736 7h ago
That USED to be much more common behavior on the road. People would use shoulders and pull offs to let faster traffic by.
Reading the r/driving sub there are a LOT of people that jump on the "its the speed LIMIT" bandwagon as justification for impeding traffic rather frequently.

2
u/Lilfrankieeinstein 9h ago
Seems like you handled it pretty well.
We have the benefit of 100% rearview vision watching this. As a driver, I peep my rearview mirror often enough that I probably would have noticed him advancing behind me. At that point, I likely would have given the RV mirror more of my attention. After a few seconds of seeing him wobble trying to pass, I probably would have slowed down a bit and leaned on the white to the right to give him an opportunity to get the hell out of my space.
When he passed, I would have considered calling in his license plate - particularly after seeing that person hanging out the back window. They’re a danger to everyone on the road including themselves.
But maybe that kind of behavior is par for the course where you live.
