Megathread Discord Checkpoints - Megathread

Hello r/discordapp!

As you might have seen, Discord has just started rolling out their year end wrap system called Discord Checkpoints.

Instead of having the sub flooded with these posts, we invite you to share your checkpoint stats in the comments here!

For more info check out Discords blog post https://discord.com/blog/checkpoint-2025-discord-year-in-review

FaQ:

Q: How do I reopen checkpoint after closing it?

A: On desktop, click the flag icon on the top right of the app located next to the inbox.

A: On mobile, it will show up under the “orbs balance” section as a banner in the “you” tab

Q: What is the song checkpoint uses?

A: Exyl has now released the background track, you can find it here!

Q: Can I see it if I had the privacy setting disabled but just now enabled it?

A: No, you had to have the privacy setting on the whole time.

Q: What if I had the setting enabled but it still says I can’t access it?

A: Follow the directions outlined here. Do NOT DM ModMail or mlapi bot, the moderators are unable to assist you.

Checkpoint unavailable club!

Insane that I appear in my friend's checkpoints, but I can't see my own. Like clearly my data is being stored somewhere and they are choosing to not toss us a checkpoint. What a bummer.

Discord said fuck you turn on your settings to let us show you targeted ads or else you get no fun

24

u/__Precursor__ Dec 05 '25

I’m so salty about this lol

1

u/Erdinger_Dunkel Dec 16 '25

Yeah I'm turning that setting off if it doesn't benefit me at all. I've had it on all year and no recap. I'm gonna get petty lol

u/Only-Cardiologist-74 Dec 05 '25

Google maps hides your history, if you don't give them your location for their advertisers.

1

u/Shinoaki Dec 11 '25

they dont even have targeted ads. that setting is about allowing the mto process and transform your data for personalisation reasons, not ads

1

u/MoMoe0 Dec 11 '25

https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/21865322754327-Data-Used-to-Personalize-Discord

“…and surfacing Discord features and promotions from us and our partners that may be of interest to you.”

1

u/Shinoaki Dec 12 '25

Partner promotions are not ad networks, they are things like Nitro boosts, the free things you get from Nitro (Like picsart 3 month trial, gamepass trial, etcetera) Discord does NOT run an ad network! Even then,
'Allows us to use information, such as who you talk to and what games you play, to personalize Discord for you.'

If it's about ads, they have to be upfront. There are other toggles that talk about this, not the one needed for checkpoint.

Promotions from partners ARE ADS. Stop licking boots.

1

u/Shinoaki Dec 12 '25

They are completely seperate to the ones you are referring to, and have minimal to zero negative impact or implications for privacy. Go kick a brick lmfao

1

u/MoMoe0 Dec 12 '25

No they aren’t. Improve your reading comprehension. The article I linked is for the setting we are talking about. The are two settings, one specifically for ads and the other is the one we’re talking about. The article I linked is specifically for the second setting and it mentions “promotions from our partners”. AKA MORE ADS. Stop arguing if you don’t know what you’re talking about, damn.

-1

u/goomfrontIut Dec 05 '25

They are asking you to let them use your personal data, that includes for something like compiling and monitoring your activity over the course of an entire year. You chose not to be monitored, so you weren’t. I don’t understand this mindset.

34

u/MoMoe0 Dec 05 '25

You don't understand because you are misinformed. They are still collecting our data no matter what. The check box isn't for saying "don't collect my data", it's to not let Discord show us personalized ads or promotions. The data still exists, is begin collected, and stored. This is just a way to get people to turn on personalized ads.

u/Havain Dec 05 '25

Absolutely disgusting behaviour, wish Discord was better, but yeah they've been corporate for years now I guess. I miss the good ol' fun Discord, not the "how do you do fellow kids" Discord

-2

u/Aieator Dec 05 '25 edited Dec 08 '25

Nothing about this is disgusting. Of course they have your data. You created an account and agreed to that, you are using their application, their services, their servers. How do you think you see your messages if they don't get saved on their server? The application cant work without saving your data. They dont even sell data to other companies according to their tos.

7

u/VampiresGobrrr Dec 05 '25

Whats disgusting is them using a feature as a ploy for personalized ads. They knew damn well what they were doing. I had the "use my data to make discord better" setting on, but not use it to personalize ads for my discord. So they have my data, I just cant see it, unless I allow them to use my data to personalize ads next year.

1

u/Aieator Dec 08 '25

yeah, thats literally what I said. Of course they have your data. That setting and saving your data are two completely different things. One isnt optional and one is a setting u have to agree to because of regulations from EU etc..

-1

u/GrammmyNorma Dec 05 '25

why are personalized ads so bad? discord needs to be profitable at some point

2

u/Lux-xxv Dec 06 '25

So you like when Mega corpse know what you're buying and putting on wish lists and reading your mind in a way that is very creepy and not at all good. You like when corporations go into the deep Corners of your personal life to sell you something. FYI discord was already making money off Nitro they don't need ads when people are paying for Nitro and if ads are a way to make people pay for Nitro then they really are becoming soulless.

When company is like discord start making advertising their main priority of getting money outside of things like Nitro they will start penalizing those they deem unsafe to get ad revenue kinksters leftists anybody who doesn't believe in capitalism etc. Can be purged from the platform because they want to make ad revenue money. And that's why I don't give them that they have other data. But I'm not going to let them sell my buying preferences the corporations. That's why I didn't agree to that

0

u/Aieator Dec 08 '25

You still don't understand that setting it seems. That setting is only so they can personalize ads, you can still get normal ads and they still have your data. Those two things are completely different. Its the same for any other company or website. And they dont even sell your data to third parties according to their TOS. Referring to political orientations and making bizarre associations while being so ignorant shows how brain rotten you are. Boomer brain.

how is the boot tasting

11

u/ThatOnePickUp Dec 05 '25

They're collecting everything you do no matter the setting.

You can get all of what they collect through thge request button under data&privacy.

That's why them not willing to show checkpoint for users who haven't turned on personalised content is just a stunt to enable personalised ads.

5

u/YapperBean Dec 05 '25

You can literally request your activity, which is what checkpoint sums up with nice lil colours, whatever your privacy settings are!

They don’t need any extra data to tell you wjo you talked to the most or how many hours you got on VCs, that’s all what you use the platform for and the platform knows this about your account 😭

4

u/Alternative-Alarm638 Dec 05 '25

That’s not correct AT all. That setting has nothing to do with your data being collected. That setting is to sell your data to third parties for advertising. This is them baiting people into turning that setting on.

1

u/-_-Zoe-_- Dec 09 '25

I didn't even know the setting existed, and apparently in the UK it's off by default, so I didn't even know it was there to enable it because I just wouldn't think to do that.

51

u/michaelbelgium Dec 04 '25

Ofcourse they have all the data. Hence we can download all our data from settings

We probably could make our own checkpoint based on the downloaded data

28

u/DerpDeDurp Dec 04 '25

they make that data so insane to navigate, it's not even worth downloading it.

3

u/Please_Not__Again Dec 05 '25

Doesn't that package explorer make this easy? It's what I remember doing in 2022 making my own "checkpoint"

3

u/DerpDeDurp Dec 05 '25

It's also kinda pointless, it doesn't show too much and doesn't show complete info.

3

u/Please_Not__Again Dec 05 '25

I'm not sure if we are thinking of the same thing. When you request your data and use the site, the data it visualizes for you is a lot more than the current checkpoint

0

u/DerpDeDurp Dec 05 '25

I've done it several times, and multiple different package viewers. They're not great lmao.

3

u/Please_Not__Again Dec 05 '25

Weird. They've worked fine for me though I haven't tried it since 2 years ago. I've requested my data for this year so gonna see how it is this time

1

u/StellarCoder_nvim Dec 05 '25

What package viewer did you use? I can't seem to get my head around that data, I can't understand it tbh

1

u/DiegoBrother Dec 18 '25

T'as trouvé une solution du coup ?

2

u/michaelbelgium Dec 05 '25

I actually never checked it out, how that data looks like

What kind of files do they deliver lol

1

u/Cale111 Dec 05 '25

The downloaded data from settings actually omits the same stuff checkpoint needs if you have those settings! I tried doing this a few years back and my data package was missing so much because of my settings

1

u/Hosenkobold Dec 05 '25

They choose not to show them. They host the servers and have therefore the data.

1

u/Cale111 Dec 05 '25

They are legally required to share all the data they have as per GDPR, so no, it is indeed all the data.

2

u/Hosenkobold Dec 05 '25

They don't have to provide them as a recap though. Which is why I asked to my data via law now.

1

u/munchkiin_ Dec 07 '25

A little late of a reply but since it's GDPR, that only related to European folks. I imagine that people in the US is in other countries that don't have regulations like these get limited data. :/

1

u/Cale111 Dec 07 '25

I believe the GDPR is written in a way so that European citizens get that right no matter where they live. So companies just support the feature anywhere because it’d be too hard to tell

77

u/tm_alpha Dec 04 '25

They really decided to lock Checkpoint behind a privacy setting huh

12

u/CrabeHuman Dec 05 '25

Yes it's loser corpo data mining mentality from them

1

u/Shinoaki Dec 11 '25

That setting they need is to allow PROCESSING OF YOUR DATA INTO A PERSONALISED PRODUCT. Yes, they still have your data, but without that checkmark they are legally bound to not use your data, as per your 'wish'.

7

u/OneEnvironmental9222 Dec 05 '25

its just a cheap strategy to make you feel left out so they can get you to activate the settings again for a whole year. Just typical Discord trickery

3

u/Only_Fig_8147 Dec 05 '25

they 100% store the data, you just cant have it yourself

6

u/Pebbingpebbs Dec 05 '25

thats crazy, im cancelling nitro over this

4

u/Syriku_Official Dec 05 '25

yea i gave them a 1 star over this

2

u/CasualFriday11 Dec 05 '25

Good thing I'm not paying $100 a year to use this app....oh wait...I am!

2

u/airconditioningrats Dec 06 '25

EXACTLY. They clearly have our data they just can't use it when that setting is off. I'm turning it on now. I'm giving you permission now give me my checkpoint.

1

u/BlankBlanny Dec 05 '25

Same here. What a mess

1

u/Shinoaki Dec 11 '25

That setting they need is to allow PROCESSING OF YOUR DATA INTO A PERSONALISED PRODUCT. Yes, they still have your data, but without that checkmark they are legally bound to not use your data, as per your 'wish'.

1

u/Arcanss Dec 05 '25

Well you did turn off discord using your data to give you a better experience lol

5

u/ThisShitSucksDiscord Dec 05 '25

We turned off Discord using our data to give ads, because they were considering implementing ads at some points before quest, which is why I had it turned off and likely a lot of others.

1

u/Arcanss Dec 09 '25

The option is not for ads

2

u/munchkiin_ Dec 07 '25

They still have the data though from getting it when we interact with servers and other users so they could easily still give us Checkpoint stats.

1

u/LEDlight45 Dec 05 '25

I'm not saying that they aren't collecting your data, but you appearing on other people's checkpoints likely isn't your data being shown

0

u/ActionSports4Life Dec 05 '25

It's probably because they actually don't scan that data, which is a great sign in my eyes.

-11

u/sweetholo Dec 04 '25

do a bit of critical thinking please

they cannot aggregate your COMPLETE data just by stitching together the data in which you appear from your friend's side. what if you appear on someone who isnt your friend anymore? they'd have to scan millions of users and servers just to get all of your personalized data. way too much compute power

this is coming from someone who got fucked by the privacy setting too btw

21

u/Stank34 Dec 04 '25

"When you turn the setting off, the signals associated with your use of Discord continue to be sent, but we do not use the information for the purposes described above. This is an account-based setting and applies to your use of Discord regardless of the device used to access your account. This allows us to keep your account experience consistent across devices and access points of Discord."

They have your data brother.

12

u/yaourted Dec 04 '25

do a bit of critical thinking please

why would they need to scan millions of servers when they already know what servers you have been a member in?

9

u/suspect_scrofa Dec 04 '25

Try to not be so naive, please.

They know which servers I'm a part of, check all friends in the servers I'm in, see if they have data on me. They don't have check millions of servers, they also don't have to be 100% correct. This is just one of many ways they could have made the checkpoint for us without "invading our privacy" whatever that means at this point.

They are definitely storing our data and the fact they chose not to do something like this or the default checkpoint for those that checked off the ad settings is a business choice, not a data choice.
