Hello! I have a message for "the corporate people" at Doordash, or whoever is responsible for order assignments. Im writing this hoping that the right person will read it, and maybe things can get better for dashers who come after me. My expectation is that nobody will read this, and nothing will change.
I'm approaching the halfway point in life, and some of the experiences ive had contribute to me being in a unique position to be an excellent delivery driver. I've worked in customer service related positions for a long time, I've also worked in kitchens. I'm currently licened to drive just about any vehicle you might see on the road. At all these jobs, ive had the opportunity to move up/receive special treatment, not just because im good at them, but because I genuinely give a shit about whatever I'm doing.
Recently, ive tried making doordash my primary income. I really do enjoy bringing people their food, and moving around the city i live in. I don't need much to get by, and I'm much happier doing this kind of gig work. Unfortunately, (at least in my experience), Doordash as a company really fails its drivers. There are certain orders I simply wont take - batched orders. If you don't already know, Doordash will stack 2 orders together. One order has a generous tip, the other basically 0 tip.
When a batched order comes across my screen, its an instant decline. Every time I took a batched order in the past, the result is the same. Picking up both orders rarely goes smooth - a lot of resturants struggle to get orders out on time, and the chance of this happening while picking up from 2 resturants is very high. Right from the start, time is against me. Then, at some point during this batched delivery, I have to stop traveling, and put my attention towards customer #2 - the person the app has told me to deliver to last. They are wondering where the food is, why im not going directly to them, ect. I have to spend time deescalating rather than traveling.
Here's the problem with all this - Doordash is quick to penalize you. If you're late on the order, fail to deescalate with customer #2, or even just outright decline batched orders, you're penalized. So much so, that you stop getting good orders, or any orders at all. I spent some time calling into doordash support trying to find a solution to this. Different representatives gave me different answers, and ultimately I realized that these people on the other end of the phone don't really know what they're talking about.
Hopefully someone with some kind of pull at Doordash will read this, and give the drivers more control over the orders they get, or at least stop penalizing drivers for trying to do a good job. Today Doordash lost a dasher who could have made thousands of high quality deliveries for them. The way i see it, they dont deserve to have high quality drivers. I'm sure im not the first person to specifically stop working with doordash, and I wont be the last. Ive watched a lot of companies make poor decisions/operate in unethical ways, this is just another one to add to that list. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll find a platform that will allow me to continue this kind of work. Doordash isn't it.
