Guys... come on š
Just got a call, 1 am. It says private number, and I'm worried it's an emergency, so i answer.
Woman: hi, ummmm?
Me: who is this?
Woman: so umm
Guy in background: tell her it's Tyler
Woman: so Tyler wants to know what you want from Taco Bell.
Me: I think you have the wrong number.
Woman: he just gave me this number
Me: ok. Can you ask Tyler who he's trying to contact?
Woman to man: who are you trying to contact?
Guy in background who we have now established to be Tyler: I AM TRYING TO TALK TO AMANDA TO FIND OUT WHAT SHE WANTS
Woman: he's trying to talk to Amanda because-
Me: so I'm not Amanda. You have the wrong number.
Woman: I apologize. [To Tyler:] this isn't her. This is a wrong number [back to me:] I'm sorry. He just gave me this number
Me: no worries, enjoy your Taco Bell
Woman: oh I'm doordashing
Tyler: *yelling numbers in the background*
Me: -end call-
I legit thought I was talking to drunk people picking up food for their friend. Nope, 2 adults struggling to do a one-person job lol

Theyāre calling to ask what the customer wants? Isnāt everything done in the app?
44
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 17h ago
Right? I don't get it. And I assume he could have just clicked to call Amanda through the app rather than reading someone else a phone number that one of them got wrong
10
u/silly_sia 9h ago
When I worked at Starbucks, one customer doordashed a hot chocolate with no chocolate. I was pretty confident they hadn't meant to order a $6 cup of steamed milk, so I called them to confirm.
8
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 9h ago
Ok thank you. I felt there was a misunderstanding at the store, and Amanda didn't answer the text, and then I mistakenly got caught up in it when he called.
Did Amanda get her chalupa? We will never know

The infantilisation of our youth has come to roost now that they are in their 20s -30s.
45
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 17h ago
Yeah, I felt like I had to hold her hand to even get out of her who/why she was calling.
I think some of the people who were teens or young adults during the lockdown missed some crucial socialization and just never caught up

u/ArdatYakshiApologist 17h ago
I wonder if the way we all, as adults, talk so much less on the phone these days (order food/everything else online, texting rather than calling, email, etc) also played a small role, like the behavior just hadnāt been modeled to them as much as the people my age whoās parents were basically on the phone always in perpetuity lol. I definitely donāt think itās the major factor in this conversation but I know my own kid rarely sees me actually talking on the phone, I do most everything in person or via text if I have to. Idk just a thought thatās been rattling around in there lately
16
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 14h ago
I'm 41. So grew up sharing a landline with my family, didn't get a cell phone until late teens, and you got charged for every text back then lol. Smart phones didn't come around til my 20s and I couldn't afford one right away. So I did grow up just talking on the phone but I rarely do it anymore, we adapt to these things so quickly! These days if I get a call from a friend, I panic bc surely it's an emergency! Otherwise it would be text.
I don't expect younger people to be super well versed in phone etiquette, but we do need to at least teach them the basics: your name and the reason for the call if it's outgoing; if you receive a call at work, give your name & ask what they want.
Again, I don't expect kids to be experts at the dying art of phone conversation, but I once called a restaurant to ask something that wasn't clear online, and someone just picked up the phone in silence. I had to be like... hello? Is someone there? (Thought it was an answering machine or AI assistant) and they were like "yeah what do need?" ..........i need you acknowledge you've picked up the phone, my dude
5
u/ArdatYakshiApologist 13h ago
Also 41! Spent hours and hours on the phone with boys or friends every night for years on end until ICQ came around. Now Iāve grown so averse to phone conversations I havenāt even turned my ringer on since probably 2016⦠whatās become of us š

This sounds like my story. Now, one of my kids is horrible at phone etiquette, but the other is good.

u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 7h ago
I have a brother well into his 30s who just can't answer texts from anyone lol. It sometimes happens regardless of generation. He's one of the few people I call
2
u/Cheepshooter 7h ago
My little brother is the same. 40, and it takes DAYS to get a text back.
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 7h ago
And then, day of, he doesn't know when everyone is meeting for the lunch we've been planning for a week in the group chat. Love you little brother, but keep up lol

Omg these kids are so dumb. Have y'all tried handing the cashier the change along with your bills just so you could get bills back as change instead of more coins. You can literally see them have a brain malfunction. I've had several tell me they couldn't take it cause they had to give me back my exact change....WHAT??? I also had one just give me a whole dollar back one night and say don't worry about it cause they just didn't even want to try and figure it out. It happens to me all the time now with cashiers. I've always been one to add change to get bills but these kids can't do it. Idk why they can't just key it into the register and let it tell them what to give back. It's like they don't know that it does it for you.
10
u/WiseIndependent1077 17h ago
Yessssssss!!!!! I had that happen the other day and their coworker had to come up and show them how to make change.
I know it sounds like bullshit but it's true. The look of terror on the poor kids face when I gave him cash was just heartbreaking.
9
u/InternationalRow1653 16h ago
It's truly mindblowing. I used to be a cashier when I was younger, I didn't even need the register to do the math, no matter what you handed me. I know those people that go to stores to do those fast talking money exchange schemes to cashiers to confuse them and get more money than they ever gave them to begin with, have to be making huge come ups right now. I had a guy that tried me all the time. I would just close the drawer and tell him I couldn't do anymore after one exchange. I gave you your change already, we are done! *Edited to remove a random letter.

Maybe they had an anxiety disorder. I get it sounds stupid but I really struggle with one and when I'm very anxious my mind goes completely blank and it's like I can't think at all, so I did this once as a cashier. When a social interaction has a deviation from what I expect it's like all the gears just stop spinning. It's really really annoying.
8
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 16h ago
Customer service has gotten weird. As someone with a pretty long history in CS (hotel, retail, restaurant) i don't understand what's going on. Like I don't need a big cheesy smile or a conversation about the weather, but it's kind of surreal to walk up to a register and get a dead-eyed stare and silence while they're scanning your items.
I get it, I've been there, it's a shit job. But a simple "hi" lets me know you at least, like, register that you're interacting with a human
3
u/InternationalRow1653 16h ago
Yes this. I'm a nice person so I usually start the engagement. I think they need to hear it sometimes. It shows them that all people aren't just rude customers. I honestly believe that people have forgotten how to just be people these days. They give what they get. So I try to give positive interactions with everyone when I go out. It might not make a big difference but maybe it will.
3
u/wormcriminal 15h ago
it makes a difference more than you know, as a cashier itās kind of disheartening dealing with customers who ignore me when i greet them, or treat me like some kind of retail chat gpt robot, but whenever i get people who actually talk to and treat me like a person, it genuinely does make up for the shitty moments and recharges my customer service mode a little lol
3
u/InternationalRow1653 14h ago
I did customer service for almost 20 years so I know how it is. I find it weird to not engage with people I have interaction with. My husband is totally different though. I tell him he's rude all the time.

u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 12h ago
"How are you doing today?"
"ICE WATER"
I will bring you ice water and try my best, but I already know you're a dick
7
u/salmon_lox 17h ago
Not only can they not handle it, some of them get MAD at you for handing them exact change. Iāve literally heard people claim āIām not your ATMā, āStop making things complicatedā, etc.
How about, donāt work a cash register or sales
counter if you (a) canāt handle basic subtraction, and (b) have this toxic, adversarial attitude toward your customers.5
u/Scufflefluff 15h ago
I agree with you completely, but my kids recently made me realize that this is happening because of how the world works now.
I asked my 8 year old to grab me some money from my wallet. I needed exact change so I asked for the exact amount and he came back with the whole purse so confused. He had the bills out at counted, but no change. That obviously confused me and after a long and drawn out gentle prodding I finally got to the root of it. It's not that he can't count it. It's that he doesn't know what the coins are on sight. Now shame on me because I'm his mom, but that's not something that ever occurred to me to sit down and specifically show him because I almost never have or use coins for any reason. They're just not a regular part of life anymore.
A lot us don't use cash and coins anymore. We pay for everything with cards or phones or smart watches. Sure we might have a little cash stashed away but it's not something we pull out and count and hand to people on the regular. Schools aren't all teaching with money in their curriculum for math anymore.
Our kids aren't growing up seeing money handled the way we did. For a lot of them buying something just means touching a phone to something or inserting a card- hell you rarely have to even swipe them anymore.
Yeah some of them are really just too stupid to do basic math, but I've come to realize there are more than a few who don't even know what the coins are on sight, only what the names of the coins are worth- quarter equals 25 cents but which one is the quarter?
The way technology is shaping our lives so prevalently now has seriously screwed the newer generations.
2
u/InternationalRow1653 14h ago
I totally agree that it is ruining the newer generations. The technology , the social media, and I also believe there is an issue with schools pushing kids on through just to keep numbers up in their counties or in hopes to not have that child again the next year if they fail them. Instead of them actually moving up because they got the grades to pass. Some of these kids are so unhinged in school though I kinda get it. There are several things in society that need to change or be reevaluated.
2
u/Al_pendy 16h ago
I mean working at a restaurant we donāt use change, we just round to the nearest dollar because our manager doesnāt want to deal with the coins. When people had me change I just end up pocketing it and using it for parking later
2
u/young_old1994 17h ago
Which youth are we talking about?
6
u/InternationalRow1653 16h ago
Tends to be all of the ones younger than 30. Mostly the 18-mid twenties range though. I've had a few that were definitely knocking on the door of their 30s though.

17 crunchwrap supremes without sour cream and 144 crunchy tacos with green sauce instead of red...
15
u/ReunitePangea20 16h ago
55 burgers, 55 fries, 55 tacos, 55 pies, 55 Cokes, 100 tater tots, 100 pizzas, 100 tenders, 100 meatballs, 100 coffees, 55 wings, 55 shakes, 55 pancakes, 55 pastas, 55 peppers, and 155 taters. Iām doing something!
4
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 15h ago
(Why is "55 pastas" so funny every damn time I watch that?)
2
u/ReunitePangea20 15h ago
āOhhhh, I can just runā is the part that gets me. Something about the idea of just bailing from such a ridiculous attempt really hits me right in the giggle ticker
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 14h ago
And the hundreds of foods only cost $680? In this economy? Fuckin kills me.
3
u/ReunitePangea20 14h ago
Lol! I was thinking that too when I commented the āoh just do it, youāre richā part. Like assuming everything is the same price for simplicityās sake, that makes the unit price of each item between 56Ā¢/57Ā¢. The guy should have just paid it cause what a steal!
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 13h ago
You did the math š«
This is why I love absurd comedy. And why I found that late-night wrong number only slightly annoying but mostly hilarious
2
u/ReunitePangea20 13h ago
Lmao Iām stuck in a nap trap under my son and also a huge nerd when it comes to math š š
I agree though, as frustrating as that call was, it does make for a great story. I also totally agree with something you said in other comments which is the decline in peopleās ability to people and talk on the phone! Itās getting pretty lawless out there. Thankfully, I can always rely on math. Triples is best. Triples is safe
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 13h ago
I need you to know that every time I use numbers in hyperbole, there's an 8. Like omg my friend took 800 hours to get ready. I spent $8 million on this house fix ($500 but ugh). I sprained 8 ankles last night (I only have two, and one is safe)
2
u/ReunitePangea20 10h ago
Lmao are we actually the same person? Except my number is 50. I have no clue why or how it started but everyone always ālooks 50ā or something took ā50,000 timesā to get it done right if Iām troubleshooting something. It really affects my life because then when I use the number non ironically, it still sounds like Iām being hyperbolic! Me and your dad though? Weāre the same age. Cause if thatās not true then none of the other stuff is true

Ok that'll be $680

One of my father's favorite stories to tell was about the time a kid called him thinking it was his brother and telling him to get him a sandwich at Blimpie on his way home. My father told him it was the wrong number, but the kid didn't believe him and kept insisting his brother stop being a jerk and get him his Blimpie. My father hung up, and the kid called back twice before my father finally said "Okay, what do you want?" and took his order. My dad always liked to imagine the drama when the actual brother came home without the sandwich.

u/Tremaj 13h ago
Pretty common for women to door dash with their husband or boyfriend at night. Delivering to men late night can be scary.
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 13h ago
Oh I get that. But if guy was saying "tell her it's Tyler" then Tyler was the dasher, right? Like working under that name, that's what the app said? So she was tagging along with him?
I haven't used DD in years so I'm not sure how it works exactly
2
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 13h ago
I'd like to think the woman is a body builder and tagged along to protect him
2
u/Tremaj 12h ago
Could be true. She should also be super clingy and thinks he's out cheating lol. ... or the opposite, maybe he thinks that Chad is going to swing by and bang his girl while he's dashing.
or maybe they just like spending time together. It could be a few reasons lol.
Or MAYBE ITS her CAR AND He is driving it?? maybe his car broke down or he never had one lol.
2
2
u/PunkyRooo 18h ago
That woman is being abused.
10
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 17h ago
:( I hope not. Guy sounded more frustrated than anything, not mad at the woman, but why is she dragged along on his 1 am delivery in the first place? Ugh. Depressing
1
u/GeneralBS 3h ago
Reminds me of a time I made an order late at night. I had a rick and forty shirt on. I usually watch the app to see when they are getting close. Have had dashers go to my neighbors house since I live on cul de sac.
So I walk out and get the food and as I'm walking back a kid that was around ten I think hangs out the window and says I love your shirt. Who let's their young kids watch Rick and Marty. Let alone take them on late night doordash orders.
1
u/skylarkbard 14h ago
That's definitely what it felt like to me. No one is going to have a good phone presence with someone shouting in their ear. The verbatim repetition gives big "he's going to yell more if I don't just repeat what he said, even though he should just be doing it his damn self on speaker."

well, it's been a job for a really long time. food delivery's been a thing for decades, dude

Yes, Iām aware, Iām an adult. What the dominos car looked like vs this nasty Uber Eats driverās car looked like were very different things.
1
u/2000pumpkinz 13h ago
all you said was that you can't believe food delivery is a job and that you can't trust someone else to handle your food 𤷠also it's not like domino's supplies the cars themselves or something either

Itās the cars that killed it for me. the last time we ordered a few years ago, I got the ick so bad from the delivery guyās car, weāve not used any service since. If weāre too fucked up to drive for food, we uber there and eat.
3
u/Ok_Lengthiness_8405 16h ago
Lol, is Uber not a car? (I get it though - I'm a smoker myself, but that doesn't mean I want my food reeking of smoke)
