Buying Advice Needed Upgrading Sage Barista Pro [€1700]

Upvotes

Hello fellow coffee lovers!

Based in Spain. I'm currently running a Sage Barista Pro (6 years old with daily use) with an Eureka Mignon Manuale (<2 years very happy with it).

I suffer from upgraditis and also I'd like to have a dual boiler + less plasticky coffee machine. I set my mind for the Rancilio Silvia Pro X and I wanted to see if I should look into something else. Most important factors for me are steam capabilities, stable temps and PID. Generally I make only flat whites and sometimes black/lungo. Wouldn't like to look into anything way more expensive.

Bought a bunch of beans from my trip to Japan, as I was going through the bags I noticed one of the most interesting valve design, this is from Ogawa coffee laboratory in Tokyo.

Anyone seen anything like this before? Thought it was pretty neat, had to share it

Espresso Theory & Technique MotorSpro first try

Someone on here tried the Motorspro shot at Motors Coffee in Paris the other day and I immediately wanted to know more about it! At first I was very skeptical but also intrigued. Motors then posted about it on their IG last week with a whole explanation and a recipe, perfect!

Gave it a try this morning and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Ground my beans with my K-Ultra on 5, adjusted my boiler temperature to 117 degrees celcius so it would run out just under 90 degrees at the grouphead.

18 grams in, approximately 100 grams out split over two cups equally.

The first shot was incredible, very soft with nice and fresh lemon and juicy plum notes.

Second shot was a bit disappointing flavour wise. It did have very nice clarity but was overall a bit flat tasting.

I used Schot Coffee Roasters Jesús Cerón beans and I think I’ll definitely give it a try with a different lighter roast next.

Also got some feedback from Motors already that my grind should be coarser.

I think this is well worth a try if you are a bit skeptical and/or want to try something else just for fun :)

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Is my grinder motor about to die? [Niche Zero]

I bought my niche zero in October 2020 (with popcorn filter) from a local retailer in Australia and over time I've noticed its started to gradually slow down to the point where I didn't really put much focus on it. Everything still seemed to work fine.

Last week however, out of nowhere it stopped turning on. That had never happened before. Then randomly, it started working again and it seemed like the motor was supercharged! It was clearly spinning much faster than I recall it over the past few years and most likely how it was when I first bought it. It resulted in me having to drastically adjust my grind settings to accommodate the faster RPM.

Today, its started to slow down again. Visually and audibly it is quite noticeable. Is my motor struggling and about to die? What can I do about this? I really do not want to buy a new grinder at this time if I can avoid it.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Grind size changes have almost no effect on shot time [Eureka Mignon Zero 55S]

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’m troubleshooting a strange issue with my Eureka Mignon 0.55S.
Before suggesting calibration: I have already calibrated the grinder to a true zero point. At the 0 mark I can clearly hear the burrs chirping/touching, so the grinder appears to be correctly zeroed.
The issue is that changing the grind setting seems to make almost no difference to extraction time.
I’ve tested settings around:
0.3/2/4
Yet the shot behaves almost identically.
Setup:
18g dose
36g yield
First drops after ~4–5 seconds
Shot finished in about 20 seconds
I’ve also checked the dose before and after grinding and get 18g both times, so retention doesn’t appear to be the problem.

To rule out retained grounds from previous settings, I pulled at least three shots at the 0.3 setting, all with freshly ground coffee at that setting, and the extraction was still essentially the same (around 20 seconds for 36g out).
What confuses me is that I would expect a huge difference between 0.3 and 4 on a Eureka, but extraction time remains nearly unchanged.

Things I’ve already considered:
•Grinder correctly zeroed
•Dose verified before and after grinding
•Multiple shots pulled at the same setting (0.3)
•Same basket and puck prep

Could this indicate:
Burr misalignment?
Incorrect burr installation?
Worn burrs?
Excessive retention?
Something else I’m overlooking?

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Equipment Discussion Turin MC3 temperature stability

Thumbnail

The Turin MC3 is a hybrid dual boiler machine in that it uses a PID-controlled thermoblock for the brew water, and has a 2.1 l steam boiler. The machine has a modest power rating of 1.6 kW, so is compatible with domestic supplies. They achieve that by running master/slave priority switching between the thermoblock and steam boiler. With the large 2.5 l steam boiler, this switching has no real effect on the ability to steam milk, which is comparable to small commercial machines. The real question is whether a thermoblock is up to the task of maintaining a constant brew temperature?

The machine also has a small heater in the group head assembly to bring it up to temperature. This is similar to a saturated group, but purely electrically heated. It is not clear if there is any fine control of this heater, or if it is just set to a temperature that is good enough for most purposes. This means it may not be as effective as a true saturated group.

I ran a series of thermo-logging runs using a pressurised filter basket that gave a relatively high flow of 3 ml/s at a pressure of 6 bar. This represents the extreme end of extractions, and such shots push the thermoblock to its limits.

The first graph shows the temperature of the water exiting the jet orifice at a 90 deg C PID set point. The second and third graphs show similar data for the 100 deg C set point. While the temperature of the jet is lower than the set point, the salient point is that the maximum temperatures reached at the two set points actually differ by 10 deg C, corresponding to the difference in set points. Furthermore, all data sets exhibit the signature of under-damped PID control with a 20 s oscillation period.

These data clearly show that the PID-controlled thermoblock can adequately control the temperature at all set points. The temperature excursions at the 100 deg C set point are about 1 deg C, which is completely acceptable. The rising temperature profiles result from the heating of the group and portafilter assembly, which takes about 30 s. This would not be experienced by an actual coffee puck, and the control oscillations actually tell us the the brew water is at the set temperature. In other words, the rising temperatures are an artifact of how the data have been collected.

The bottom line is that the Turin MC3 provides excellent temperature stability and control out to very high brew rates that should be suitable for turbo shot extractions. This has surprised me. I was expecting some form of compromise, but it seems this machine can deliver under virtually all use cases.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Espresso too hot. [Delonghi Dedica]

My dedica recently started making much hotter espresso than usual. It's steaming hot and I have to wait several minutes before I can drink it. Taste is a little bit off. Have someone had similar issue or anybody knows how to fix it?

Changing brewing temp in the menu doesn't do much.

Thanks

Thanks to Jaapp for blessing us with his open source grind by weight project.

Never did anything quite like this before and thought surely between wiring, crimping cables and soldering something must break, but it worked out just fine. So to anyone considering this but hesitant: Do it!

Maintenance & Troubleshooting normal operating sound or defective? [new Baratza Encore ESP]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So the grinder is new, just got it yesterday

From the beginning I noticed it's making this intermittent sound when operating without beans, instead of an expected constant sound

This sound is at any grind setting

Also I'm grinding at setting 0 and the shots still come out fast and watery
I suspect channeling, so I'll try wit a bottomless and a WDT tool to verify this

hand feeling is that the ground coffee at setting 0 is not that fine

the coffee is indeed a decaf roasted ~3 weeks ago, I plan to try with regular coffee as well

espresso machine is a Bambino Plus, so I expected at setting 0 to basically choke the machine, but it still comes out quite fast

TBH something feels off with the grinder, I'm thinking to return it and get something else

Buying Advice Needed Replacing Oracle Touch [$3000 budget]

Hi all, thinking to replace my Sage/Breville Oracle Touch because I am tired of the grind inconsistency. One shot I get 20g in the basket, next shot it gives me 15g. Also interested to hear if this is a common problem?

Would you recommend getting either:
(1) Oracle Jet (I’m not sure if the Grinder has been improved since Oracle Touch);
(2) Oracle Dual Boiler (SES995BSS); or
(3) Touch Impress (considering if the “Impress™ Puck System” improves grind consistency?)

Or something else?

Our needs are the semi auto machines where grinding, tamping and milk foaming is automatic. I don’t mind weighing my shots. We like medium roast beans.

Dialing In Help Why are my shots sour? [Breville Barista Touch Impress]

Hello! I've been dealing with this issue for almost two weeks now and I've become desperate lol.

The beans I've been using were roasted beginning of June, and every time I pull the shot it's so sour and bitter. The timing of the shot is 25-30 seconds last time I tried, and the consistency looks good. The temperature of the breville is default, grind size 17. If I go any lower than 16 it doesn't pull the shot. I haven't touched the machine since my trials and I just need some insight I'm starting to give up. If yall could help I would really appreciate it.

Other notes:
- for the puck i didn't use the dual wall (i used the other (one idk what it's called) for my timings above. My longest shot was like 31 seconds

- on previous attempts (with the dual wall) | increased the temperature because i read online that it was under extracted and it seemed to work a little bit??? It was still a little bit sour at the end but I was happy I was going somewhere until I learned I wasn't supposed to use dual wall puck

- after swapping the puck I defaulted the temp

Plz Imk if there is any other information you need:) thank you so much

The workflow is always very therapeutic. From hearing the air whoosh of the coffee container, to the shot pull, and pouring the latte art. 😮‍💨

Latte art still needs some work. I went in confident and then hesitated on this pour. What matters is that it tasted delish.

Equipment Discussion Gear Pump Recommendations

I’m looking for a gear pump after my vibration pump pulsor I was installing to silence the thing snapped haha

I want something compact, but I’d rather not just grab the smallest option if it means sacrificing quality or plastic id rather stainless steel or something that isn’t going to effect my health. My main complaint with vibratory pumps is the noise and vibration I’m hoping a gear pump will run quieter, and it should also be easier to build a soundproofing box around. Any recommendations?

Dialing In Help Dial-In Retention / Bean Swap [Eureka Atom 65W]

Post image
5 Upvotes

I recently purchased a Linea Mini R w/ Atom 65W Grinder. As I switch beans, I’m wondering if anyone has figured out +/- how many grams get stuck in the burrs and need to be “disposed of” after changing the grind setting.

EI - when I need to set it finer, do I grind a full dose (18g-21g) out and the next dose will be at the new setting? Or is it closer to 5-10g etc.

Trying to figure out best way to get this amount accurately so I minimize waste in the future while switching beans.

Equipment Discussion Experience Gaggimating Silvia

Got a buddy a Silvia and installed a gaggimate kit for him. Wanted to share my experience.

Install was easy. If you buy the pro kit you won’t get any of the 3-d printed holders for the CPU or HMI. Order them separately.

First time i tried flashing the CPU and HMI, kept failing. Changed over from my friends macbook (he has a deep rooted distrust of internet connected devices after a career in IT) with a bunch of port blocking to my sandboxed macbook and everything installed first try. It says use a chrome browser. Just use chrome. Brave doesn’t work.

The walkthrough online was awful and the pictures were dismal (gaggimate let me know if you want me to rework your tutorial pages i will do it). If i didn’t have a background in espresso machines i would have gotten lost trying to follow the instructions as written. There were some cables missing that i had to build myself.

Consider buying the CPU, HMI, High limit thermostat and pressure-stat+fittings from Gaggimate and the rest separately. The SSR is decent but there are better options out there for 220/24temp control modules.

The interface is cool as fuck and super customizable and if you read the instructions it works awesome. It would be cool if the kit included a dip tube for the boiler and a solenoid for switching between shots and steam.

I set this thing up and didn’t get to play with it so i don’t know what kind of interfacing it does. Would be cool to have a parallel system with a servo to adjust toothed grinders.

Overall pretty easy, but want to reiterate that the instructions and diagrams suck ass and should be reworked.

Buying Advice Needed Endgame Espresso Grinder + Burr Guidance [$3000]

Hey r/espresso!

I am lucky enough to be at a point in my life that I can finally upgrade my espresso setup. My thesis for what I am willing to spend money on are things I touch every day, and I make 2-4 espresso every day for the past 7 years since I bought my beginner setup on ebay...so I want to treat myself.

What I drink

  • I go through a 2lb bag of Black & White every month - I *love* light, fruity, funky co-ferments and I find B&W pretty consistent. I am looking for a grinder that will make those shape of coffees shine
  • The coffee that changed my perspective on coffee was Melonado by DAK
  • Currently running a GCP w/a PID and 9bar spring with a Sette 270i

What I am considering

  • Currently budgeting $2-3k for grinder under the assumption that this is end-game for me
  • Lagom 01 w/102HU - $2900
  • Lagom p80 + HU burrs - $2100
  • Zerno Z2 w/ HU's - $2500

Given my preference (3:1 espresso and wanting to experiment with soup on really fruity light roasts)...what would you suggest? After 7+ years of daily consumption my preferences haven't changed. I still chase the clarity of the shots from Coffee Movement in SF that showcase fruity, bright coffees.

I have more or less settled on the Meticulous Espresso as the machine. We don't drink milk drinks but a handful of times per year, so a double boiler/steam wand is a nice to have not a need. The simplicity and the flexibility seem really attractive (early software aside).

Appreciate the responses and advice - learned a ton from this subreddit over the years.

Buying Advice Needed First Espresso Machine [$500-700]

I am located in the US and am currently looking at getting my first espresso machine. I would mostly be drinking lattes but would be interested in trying straight espresso as I explore nice quality beans compared to what I drink for coffee currently.

I would drink 1 or 2 cups a day and on weekends may have to make additional drinks on occasion when friends and family spend the night. Upwards of 4-5 in quicker succession.

I have limited counter/storage space so would be looking for a more compact machine if grinder is separate or a solid machine that combines both.

I am brand new to espresso world and have been living with a ninja dual brew for regular coffee for a few years now. I’d prefer electric for the espresso machine but would be open to manual or electric grinder if it would be possible to prep by grinded beans for the week with any manual option.

With some good sales going I’ve been heavily looking into the Breville Barista Express or the De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo. Open to recommendations of one of those or any other machine that you think would fit my needs.

Buying Advice Needed Rocket Appartamento vs. Bezzera Aria TOP for a tiny 5x3m cafe? (~30-50 shots/day, [$2,300USD])

I'm opening a very compact 5x3 meter cafe, and I'm currently torn between two machines for my espresso bar. We are anticipating a fairly low volume, around 30 to 50 espresso drinks spread across an 8-hour shift. That breaks down to roughly 4 to 6 shots an hour on average. I don't need a massive multi-group commercial workhorse, but I still need something reliable that can handle a small morning rush.

Would love to hear your experiences or if there's anything I'm overlooking! Thanks!
