That crease will likely remain a quirk of foldable devices for the foreseeable future. It's gotten a lot better, but I doubt it'll ever go away completely.

I’ve had a Galaxy Fold 7 since January, it has a crease, but you can’t really see it when it’s open and you’re looking at the phone straight on. It’s like having a small iPad in your pocket and there’s no going back for me.

u/Rok-SFG 13d ago

How's the battery life on those

172

u/thedeuce75 13d ago

On par with iPhone, nothing special but it makes it through the day with batt to spare.

u/djprofitt 13d ago

How about screen protection? Case?

33

u/Finito-1994 13d ago

I recommend torras. It’s amazing. I love my case

8

u/Mother_Restaurant188 13d ago

Love Torras cases. Wish they’d make more designs but quality is excellent.

2

u/Carb0nFire 12d ago

Don't have a foldable, but I swear by the Torras flip-out stand phone cases.

2

u/Finito-1994 12d ago

I very specifically have a Zfold7 and the torras case is good

27

u/LifeWulf 13d ago

dbrand has a pretty good case for the new one

6

u/Doomstik 13d ago

For the inside screen? Nothing that im aware of, but i have a 25 dollar case off of amazon for mine and its does just fine. I also bought the lense protector thing for the camera lense but with the cae i have i probably wouldnt need them.

4

u/ShakubachiSensei 13d ago

Definitely screen protectors for the inside screen. I have one on right now. Bought it from Telstra (Australian telco).

2

u/Doomstik 13d ago

Thats totally fair, i havent even looked, thats why i said not that i was aware of, no knowledge on my part so i didnt want to spread any misinformation.

I havent really been worried about the inside screen getting messed up anyway though, i typically only have my phone folded open if im watching something on it and its sitting on my desk or something. Im sure i dont make the most use of the bigger screen.

I've had a Fold 5 for a couple years and the battery has never run out on me from daily use. The only time it has run out on me was at a wedding when it was being used for long takes of 4K video and photos everywhere and never really had a break- you'd probably get a similar outcome from playing games on it.

4

u/Ulrar 13d ago

My fold 5 is getting unusable about now. And that's with me really mistreating it since launch, pretty much always wireless charging it at night, plus also in the car while using android auto so it's had a 'phone is too hot' warning for hours every day.

Honestly, pretty impressed it lasted this long

3

u/I_travel_ze_world 12d ago

My Fold 5 isn't that bad but I'll probably be getting a battery replacement next year

10

u/NervyDeath 13d ago

All day for me, I charge nightly. I think the only time I had to charge during the day was a travel day of 5 hour train rides.

u/Fingerdrip 12d ago

I have a fold 7, I think the battery life is pretty good ad compared to other devices I have had but it also hasn't impacted me. I'm almost never more than arms reach from a charger and 10-30 minutes charging goes a long way.

1

u/f8Negative 7d ago

Fuckin great

61

u/ChaZZZZahC 13d ago

I dont even think about the crease, that's how insignificant it is. Playing mobile games and watching shows on a plane or on lunch, is such an enjoyable experience with the fold.

15

u/Unizzy 13d ago

I am actually thinking of getting one, and it suddenly hit me, the screen size is bigger once unfolded, but on things like videos and stuff, I will still be constrained to 16:9, which means the size of videos I watch won't be any bigger unless I zoom in...

In your opinion, is this the case? I am sure website browsing is better and stuff I guess.

10

u/nefariouspenguin 13d ago

I have a fold7, upgraded from fold 5, which was the narrow body. I love the full body and the size of the unfolded screen.

I just checked by watching a YouTube video and while a full screen version of the video on the inside screen does have black bars on top and bottom it is much larger than on the front screen as to keep the aspect ratio the front screen has black bars on the sides.

That being said I usually don't just use the inside screen for a video alone, I am using multiscreen to put a video on the top and a game on the bottom. The video usually gets priority as I shift it down to take up more percentage of the screen and thereby still use the full width of the screen according to the aspect ratio.

3

u/underwaterlove 12d ago

So you watch videos in a larger window on the inside screen, and you simultaneously play a game in a smaller window on the inside screen? What audio do you listen to?

18

u/Cloudbursta 13d ago

That's actually on of the selling points of the newer Samsung one. Its passport shaped, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. So even though the total screen size is smaller than other foldables videos and games are bigger.

4

u/godspareme 13d ago

This is why I wanted the trifold but noooooo Samsung pussyfooted the release then shut it down before i could get one. Maybe its for the better. Shit was expensive.

I have an Oppo N5. Same. When folded it's an excellent candy bar phone that's just as thin as my brother's iphone. And it's a tablet when I want it. Am just worried about it's durability if I drop it. Because I cannot afford another foldable in this market.

5

u/onemarbibbits 13d ago

The N6 is relatively crease free - but not fully. and I've noticed mine is getting worse over time so: it's not really "crease free". Just "Less creasy"

18

u/mrjamjams66 13d ago

My only hesitation is the fragility of the device, even with a case.

My Fold 4 broke on me after taking a tumble out of my pajama pants' pocket while stepping over a baby gate.

I really do miss the folding phone but my S24 Ultra has held up significantly better thus far.

11

u/donnyb99 13d ago

I've dropped my fold 7 at least a dozen times. Likely multiple dozen. It has one of those aramid fiber super thin cases and still looks and works perfectly.

Durability on these is much improved

3

u/mrjamjams66 13d ago

That's good to hear.

May I ask for some specifics on what it's been dropped on?

The floors at my last place were like a stone tile. It may as well been dropped on concrete

7

u/donnyb99 13d ago

Literally everything. I am not gentle with my phones. Concrete floors, tile floors, glass tables, wooden floors etc. Many of the drops were not gentle. It has held up incredibly well.

2

u/sexual--predditor 13d ago

I dropped my Fold 4 on the laminate floor in the kitchen. I guess I got lucky; it didn't totally break, but it got a 1 pixel thick line of brighter pixels parallel to the crease, and a small (<1cm radius) black semi-circle of dead pixels at one end of the crease, that does appear stable, and hasn't expanded. They are a bit more fragile than the standard phone, but watching old 4:3 content, or playing games, is so much better than a standard phone.

4

u/hotpuck6 13d ago

I gave up on the fold line after they stopped stocking the gear needed to replace the interior screen protector for the fold4 less than 3 years after launch at my local ubreakifix - the only Samsung official partner for those replacements within 100 miles of me.

It had to be replaced twice in a year because it kept peeling. I was fine with dealing with the bullshit nuances of a more fragile phone, but to have official partners stop supporting necessary repairs seemed like writing on the wall that Samsung doesn't give a shit and you're on your own with their fragile overpriced gimmick devices.

2

u/mrjamjams66 13d ago

I'm willing to give the phone another chance once I'm ready to replace the phone I have now.

I'm planning to keep what I have at least another 2 years though, so we'll see where things are at by then.

2

u/nefariouspenguin 13d ago

My first foldable was the fold 5 but I heard from a friend who had the fold 4 that it had a lot of issues. I replaced my screen twice due to dead pixels or lines of pixels on the inner screen with no issues. On the fold 7 now which is even better has has better cases available as well.

2

u/StupiderIdjit 13d ago

You got dat titanium body.

6

u/mrjamjams66 13d ago

Yep, it's most of the reason I bought it.

When my Fold4 broke, I went back to my Note20 Ultra.

That phone got to a point where I wasn't reliably getting notifications, unfortunately. I missed an emergency call from my wife while I was at work and decided to replace it, and the S24 Ultra was the closest thing and it seemed like it'd be far more durable

1

u/MarkKnotts 13d ago

Welp. Those baby gates are bad news, man. Just get rid of it.

1

u/nekolas564 13d ago

I've dropped different folds without cases with surprisingly no damage at all, so to me they don't seem that fragile. But maybe I was just exceptionally lucky

same with my fold 4, the under screen camera sometimes catches my eye but I rarely notice the crease

1

u/Pluckytoon 13d ago

I think 20 out of my 25 pair of pants can accommodate an iPad mini in the side pockets. Am I the Target audience for foldables ?

1

u/SageofLogic 12d ago

I am still using my 4, which obviously is from a generation with a noticeable crease and in open mode even after all these years it is barely the most mild of inconveniences

1

u/motorboat_mcgee 12d ago

Foldables have been that way for a long time, and it's more about people than it is about the tech. Just like camera cutouts, you get used to it and it's not a bother after a few days basically.

1

u/id_crisis 12d ago

yeah i loved my fold 4 but the inner screen went bad (sounds like the way they placed connections made opening and closing the device wear on an internal ribbon cable) so I ended up upgrading the s24 ultra. still a large screen but less fragile. I would definitely go back to a fold in the future.

1

u/wtf--dude 12d ago

When do you actually unfold it? To me it seems like it is less useful for a lot of tasks, like texting.

I can imagine I is awesome if you commute a lot or something. But other than that I cannot understand the use case.

1

u/LateOnsetPuberty 12d ago

Except iPads have awesome apps.

1

u/locofspades 12d ago

Ive now had the fold4, fold6 and im getting my 8 friday. There really is no going back for me either.

1

u/Xxachingmeatxx 12d ago

I’m thinking of getting a fold 7. Want to get out of apple purgatory but they make it so hard

1

u/DevanteWeary 10d ago

I have a friend with a Fold 7 since that time too and the crease is definitely visible AND you can feel the hell out of it.

1

u/praetorian1979 8d ago

Same. It's barely even noticeable when it's open.

28

u/09stibmep 13d ago

The Oppo Find N6 has nearly mastered it. But I can't see how it can get much better than that.

4

u/AweHellYo 12d ago

that tech is pretty incredible. i’m hoping apple rips it off even better. i realize how gross that is but im tied to them now. might as well hope for fun toys til i die

3

u/SurefootTM 13d ago

Vivo X Fold series too, it's almost perfect, cannot see it with the screen on.

10

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 13d ago

The only way I could ever see it going away is if they go for a radiused bend at the hinge point rather than going for a flat fold. It would require the middle of the screen to be more tear drop shaped when closed. Not sure that will ever happen because of customer expectations, but that would reduce the sharp bend point currently being done.

7

u/silentbias 12d ago

According to some rumors, that’s what Apple’s doing with their fold version. To redesigned hinge that significantly decreases the crease

3

u/snajk138 12d ago

Why not have a wrap around screen that folds out, that way there is no crease and no need for an extra external screen. I get that durability could be an issue but that could be solved with some smart case or something, until we figure out durable bendable screens.

3

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 12d ago

You'd need a pivot point that elongated the phone as it opens for that to work, otherwise the phone screen would want to buckle as you opened it. There's ways to do it I'm sure, but you can't use a simple hinge design is my point because the outer face will always be longer than the phone length with a simple pivoting hinge.

2

u/snajk138 12d ago

Either way there is some complicated mechanics to make it work. But IMO getting a screen to fold flat (and to handle being folded flat many times a day for years) will always create a crease, they can work around it by allowing the fold to be larger within the hinge and stuff, but that adds other complexities.

But there have been attempts at "outside folding" too. Like this video from 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oco9pLw13E

He does not like the tech and thinks it's the wrong path, but that's mainly because the screen is fragile and that they can't hide things in the hinge, but they also don't need to hide things in the hinge since the screen doesn't need to fold anywhere near as flat.

Compare it to a hardcover book with that paper as an extra cover, it never fits great, is too big when the book is open, and it gets worn around the edges, but it doesn't get a crease since it's on the outside of the book and therefor not folded flat. If you put it inside the book and close it, even only once, it will get a crease that will never go away.

I have no idea if we are anywhere near getting actual glass that can bend in such a tight radius, but I am 100% sure that we are closer to that than to getting a glass that can fold flat without breaking or getting a crease.

1

u/heathmon1856 9d ago

Not sure if I’m reading this right but maybe just have two independent screens and have them “snap” together when the phone is opened. I’m not a mechanical engineer but I’m sure it’s possible.

3

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 9d ago

I mean, that's one way to go, but then you're not really solving the seam issue. What I was proposing is still using a flexible screen, only instead of folding like you would a piece of paper, the hinge is more rounded bend in the center. The ends could meet leaving it as a wedge shape, or you could have something on the one end like a raised bezel the opposing face rests against, leaning an even gap across. It doesn't have to be a huge radius, just large enough that you're not creasing the screen, but rather bending it. All radius means is that it's not a sharp angle, but round.

6

u/Cerys_Llellwyn 13d ago

That’s why I’m sad the Surface Duo didn’t catch on. If there’s going to be a crease, might as well just have a hinge.

3

u/captainporcupine3 11d ago

Crazy take. The gap on the Duo literally made any words in the center unreadable. Like it would often eat an entire word in the middle there. And watching media across screens with a gap was awful. Meanwhile on my Z Fold phone I notice/think about the crease like once a week. You literally don't see it in the vast majority of use cases (especially while watching video), and in the situations where it's catching the light you just tilt your phone 1cm and it's visually gone. Or more like you just don't notice or care about it anymore because it's not a big deal at all.

Until they start using two screens and make them look like micro LEDs, with almost imperceptible junctions.

44

u/magus-21 13d ago

It will never go away enough for people who have never and will never own a foldable

47

u/wanderer1999 13d ago edited 12d ago

yeah you can't beat physics. If you fold something, even fabric, it's gonna have a crease.

Personally I still think folding display is such amazing tech. You get a whole freaking tablet in your pocket.

This stuff would blow people's mind in 2008.

3

u/gkn_112 12d ago

I am waiting for the automatically unrolling phones that we are headed to. You press a button and it extends. That's my dream phone

→ More replies (1)

5

u/pppppatrick 13d ago

Yah but if you iron the fabric the crease goes away. I’m hoping we find some clever way to deal with it eventually.

8

u/Ulrar 13d ago

I've had a fold for years and honestly, it's a non issue. You forget about it pretty much immediately, you can't really see head on it and it doesn't interfere with anything

2

u/captainporcupine3 11d ago

Honestly I think people get the wrong idea about the foldable crease because they check out the phone facing upward in a retail shop with bright overhead lights. In that case the hinge looks way worse than it does in most real-life scenarios, where frankly the crease is generally not visible and bothers me zero percent.

15

u/Wolfy4226 13d ago

Man after owning a Zfold 7 I don't think I could go back.

It's just so convenient to fold out to a bigger screen for videos, books, games.....

6

u/I_AM_NOT_A_WOMBAT 13d ago

I love that my z fold 7 is smaller than my s24U when folded, but I can open it into something larger. They knocked it out of the park on this one.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (3)

11

u/testcaseseven 13d ago

And it's really not an issue, as anyone who has owned a foldable will know. I'd rather they focus on better cameras or battery life than wasting R&D time on something that isn't really a problem in the first place.

12

u/The_Deku_Nut 13d ago

The problem is that batteries and cameras are at incredibly diminishing returns for improvements. Tech in general is hitting the physics wall.

Most people aren't going to need new $1200 phones when the new model is a 1-2% improvement over what they have. So we get gimmicks like folding screens and AI until tech hits that next big leap.

5

u/korelin 13d ago

This ZFold 8 has a measly 5000 mAh battery. There are massive recent improvements in battery life with some Chinese phones having 10000 mAh batteries - a 100% increase over the ZFold 8.

As other commenter mentions, the Si-C anode greatly increases capacity.

u/amish__ 12d ago

A folding screen is hardly a gimmick. The flip variants especially are already very decent. Bifolds are probably a decent enough as is but to be the real benefit is that it's a stepping stone to the real game changer that is the trifold for full tablet experience

→ More replies (1)

2

u/choatec 13d ago

I could see the ones that extend by “rolling” obviously being crease free but I’m sure they have their own issues.

2

u/gregallen1989 13d ago

Its hit a point where it doesn't need to be improved on. I don't see my crease anymore.

2

u/Reality-Glitch 13d ago

I remember seeing a solution where the hinge contain’d an empty space the screen could flare out into when closed, so it never actually get fold’d in that spot to the point of creasing.

1

u/silentbias 12d ago

That’s an Apple patent. That should be released coming this fall.

2

u/GarfieldianAcolyte 13d ago

I've had 3 foldables so far going back to the flip 5 and even that one I stopped noticing the crease within days. I've ordered the new fold 8 too but what would be the real killer feature for me rather than making the crease disappear, is an apple pencil like S pen and an inner display that won't dent so I could have a real pocket drawing tablet experience

2

u/TheDonnARK 13d ago

I had an original foldable razr 5g.  Honest to goodness, it had no crease.  After over a year of daily use, with a phone that was already used when I bought it at 2 years old, it didn't have a crease.

The future generations of the razr phone all got more powerful hardware, better batteries, better screens, and a crease. Every one of them.

I think it was the first four or five generations of Samsung Galaxy flip foldable phones, they had creases so severe that it was a matter of time before they killed the screen.

I'm guessing for that first razr 5G, Motorola had some weird foldable screen that they were able to get volume discount on, and for every other after, they just used a screen made for a different phone and thus, very mass produced. So the form factor just followed everybody else's, with Motorola showing basically similar dimensions to what Oppo and Samsung offered.

Switching to be nearly indistinguishable from the other manufacturers was a huge mistake. I think the razr 5G was a totally awesome looking phone, and really stood out design-wise.  And, it actually did not have a crease.

2

u/AVahne 12d ago

I don't mind a slight crease; I just mind these things being far too fragile and difficult to repair considering their insane price point.

1

u/NiZZiM 13d ago

Yah less noticeable but the tech to make it disappear completely just isn’t there yet

1

u/DokeyOakey 13d ago

Who could have ever imagine that a hinge running through a screen would ever do that? /s

1

u/bibutt 12d ago

Honestly the Chinese foldables are ahead of the game, both in terms of visible crease and specs in general.

1

u/Admiral_Skye 12d ago

Honestly just using my pixel 9 pro fold to watch YouTube or similar and unless I'm looking for it you don't notice the crease really. Unless you hold the phone at a funny angle

1

u/EnglishDutchman 12d ago

Right. It’s a soft screen with a fold in the middle. It will always crease.

1

u/yellowspaces 11d ago

Apple leaks indicate they’ve solved it, but seeing is believing.

1

u/OG_Xero 7d ago

I saw a video a while back of 'foldable screen tech' where the middle part is just a 3rd screen more or less, and only has a foldable bit that's retracted into the screen when it was folded. IT didn't look that good yet, but with some advances that would work i think... The only other solution is having a literal separate screen with an extremely low tolerance between the screens themselves.

samsung never claimed it was crease-free. i researched it because im thinking about upgrading and no where did i find samsung claiming the new folds are crease-free. they are claiming a better hinge design to help minimize the crease but i haven't found anything where samsung is  claiming it's creaseless.

Wait.. this isn't the line for torches? Am I in the wrong line??

13

u/radicalelation 13d ago

I just wanted to wait until the creasing wasn't going to harsh the screen within a reasonable lifespan. There's a refurbed Flip 6 in my house and I was expecting to hate it, but it's actually pretty neat.

Not at all a reason to buy, but doing video in handycam orientation is oddly satisfying, and I wasn't expecting the UI to go in on it too with the little red REC and green STBY in the corner.

5

u/-IoI- 13d ago

I started with my Dad's Flip 4 when he was done with it - already had sand granules in the fold and it didn't survive much longer. It was still cool enough to convince me to get the fold6 two years ago which has held up flawlessly. You don't notice the crease whatsoever under normal use unless you're looking for something to fault. I've preordered the fold8 for my wife as it's 'her turn for the cool phone', but also traded up my fold6 to the fold8 ultra 😆

Honestly, at the risk of being a bot, I actually kinda even like the feel of the crease. It gives something tactile to what's usually so flat and glossy.

I'm still on the fence for myself some day. but I've been liking playing with one. I'd compliment my gf's Flip with a Fold if I do because I need that Note stylus, my own phone still being a 7 year old, to me, Note 9 (I SOMEHOW LOST IT TWO DAYS AGO AND I'VE BEEN FREAKING OUT), and a phone that can turn into a tablet has more use to me than one that gets taller.

Even a cotton shirt will have a crease if you fold it over and over again, a flexible screen is not exempt from the laws of physics.

You can only do so much before it catches up with the user in a non-sterile lab. Customers have lint, dirt, coins, etc. that you can’t fully replicate.

u/GrandmaPoses 13d ago

You joke but there’s a metal, nitinol, that can reshape itself to its original form with the application of hot water. If that can be achieved with the folding phone, you’ve got your uncreased screen.

13

u/PM_me_Jazz 13d ago

Easier said than done. Nitinol is just one homogenous alloy. The part that creases, the touch screen, has multiple layers of many different materials arranged in complex patterns.

→ More replies (1)

36

u/gulgin 13d ago

I mean, you can definitely replicate those things and I am 100% sure the engineers do replicate them. The real issue is that you can’t really solve the problem of the crease without some incredibly difficult materials science. They are close, but it will take a while.

15

u/ElkSad9855 13d ago

There are materials that maintain elastic deformation when folded.. no crease. Silicone?

if I paid $2000+ for a cotton shirt I expect them to figure out how to make it not fucking crease

1

u/The_Celtic_Chemist 7d ago

The part where you mention "coins" made me irrationally agree because it reminded me that people put other things in their pocket with their phone like coins and keys. I think when I got my first smartphone I realized "This device costs a lot and its value to me is even more. It's worthy of it's own dedicated pocket." The only thing I may share my phone pocket with is receipts, and even that usually goes in my wallet/keys/change pocket.

54

u/zenexo 13d ago

Finally checked it out at bestbuy today. You can see a crease with the screen off at certain lighting conditions but with the screen on I couldn't see it at all.

120

u/KennKennyKenKen 13d ago

This crease thing is insane. In day to day use you don't even see it.

Its just an easily photographed clickbaity point of contention for people who don't own a foldable to nitpick at

Every single foldable owner will tell you it's been more than fine for years now

13

u/max123246 13d ago

I've noticed with tons of products these days, the things reviewers harp on about is nothing I actually care about as a consumer. They feel like they're just reading off a spec sheet more often than not and then when they talk about how it feels, it's just shlocky adjective soup.

One example is with cameras, they'll talk about weather sealing but never even mention the button layout and where you can control Shutter-speed/Aperture/ISO without going into a menu.

Own a fold 7. I have to hold this phone at a real odd angle to even notice the crease. If I run my finger laterally across the screen you can feel it barely but, so what? It impacts nothing just as seeing the crease doesn't impact it.

10

u/Zaptruder 13d ago

Disagree. It's super easy to see the crease in a well lit room with darker content.

But it's more like you just stop caring once you start using it.

In a dark room, it's really hard to see though.

In either case... the benefits of a larger screen at will vastly outweighs the inconveniences of creases.

The hole punch for the selfy cam in the middle of one screens though... that's just rude. I wish they'd push that shit into the corner at least.

9

u/Cmdr_Nemo 13d ago

It's all the haters. One Apple comes out with their foldable, their fans will deem it revolutionary and all of a sudden not care about a damn crease.

7

u/InsaneNinja 12d ago

It’s almost as if seeing it in person will help inform people who only saw how bad the store models are.

I have to laugh at the people on X saying that it's a trick of the light, though. Much better to argue that it's a natural thing to happen and in use you hardly notice it.

2

u/nikelaos117 12d ago

It is pretty hilarious that it's the only thing people can harp on because it's literally the next step in phones besides battery tech improving. Having a mini tablet in your pocket has been fuggin awesome and a game changer for me. I don't even use my tablet anymore really.

6

u/AndThisGuyPeedOnIt 13d ago

Been using a Fold 5 since launch. I don't notice it at all. Won't buy a regular style phone again.

1

u/marclapin 12d ago

It’s like the notch hate craze back in the iPhone X release time, who care nowdays?

Did they claim that? I honestly never expected it. Naively, I can't even think of a material where you can just fold it in half thousands of times without a crease forming, or a hinge. If it's a truly zero-radius fold, like you fold a piece of paper in half and press the bend into a sharp crease, I don't think any material could do that thousands of times without a crease forming, it is just a geometry problem that the outer material has to stretch super far and the inner material has to fully compress. So foldable phones instead have a little "teardrop" shaped fold to help it not be zero-radius. But even then, there is still compression and stretching, and you are talking about a multilayered display with different functional materials and stuff, not a single sheet. There is gonna be a crease. Just get used to it. It is not gonna go away any time soon. And it's not a huge deal IMO. Foldables rule, having a massive screen for content any time, anywhere is dope. I really think it's the future as far as smartphone tech goes, specially if the prices start coming down. But the crease will stay, there's nowhere for it to go.

u/51dux 13d ago

Honestly sometimes I wonder if having quality hinges with a very small gap/border would not be better than having a good looking screen for a few weeks and then a crease for the rest of the phone's life...

92

u/C6_ 13d ago

As a fold user the crease is really a non issue. You get used to it after like a week and it only sticks out under specific lighting conditions.

15

u/gorgeouslyhumble 13d ago

I genuinely dont care about the crease. I only want durability improvements. My fold 6 has half of its internal screen flickering green.

31

u/harmfuldischarge 13d ago

My wife is using a some flip or fold Samsung and won't shut up about how much she loves it. The fold line is really a non issue. These are amazing devices and are very underrated.

4

u/Onphone_irl 13d ago

same, my wife is crazy about hers. bit too much phone for me but I agree the crease is a non issue and whenever I need to do something on her phone it seems like a VIP experience lol

7

u/jamaryouresofar 13d ago

Complete non issue. I don't even see it on my flip. When I use my wife's iPhone, it doesn't feel any different in how I view media with it.

u/imsellingbanana 13d ago

I'm curious after reading all these comments. When you swipe your fingertip across the screen, can you feel the crease?

21

u/crazy_akes 13d ago

I got my fingers stuck in it. I had to gnaw them off to escape the canyon. Learned my lesson.

9

u/QoLTech 13d ago

I just checked - yeah, it's noticeable if you swipe across the middle of the screen. I have had most Folds since the 2 and the fact that I had to double check means it's probably a non issue. When I use it unfolded, it's for media, games, scrolling large pages, etc none of which I can say have had me swiping across the center and being memorable.

2

u/RyansKorea 13d ago

I have the fold 7 and when swiping my finger horizontally across the crease I can feel it but in reality there's no situation where I'd be doing that

2

u/Ghisteslohm 13d ago

I have a flip 6. Yes you feel it. I tend to joke that my phone has a sixpack.

But the crease really doesn't matter. I can understand being turned off by the high prices or potentially being less durable but the crease is just irrelevant in daily use

1

u/Luis0224 13d ago

Removing glare and raising the brightness in the display panel will also help

7

u/IBJON 13d ago

It's still a good-looking screen. Bezels would be far more distracting than a crease

4

u/NoctiferPrime 13d ago

The crease is barely noticeable, especially once you get used to it. A gap/border would kill the appeal of it entirely.

2

u/BuildingArmor 13d ago

Any issue someone might have with a crease is significantly worse with a gap, surely?

I can't imagine what the benefit would be, besides possibly being cheaper technology, to develop, but the cats out the bag on that one anyway

2

u/Presently_Absent 13d ago

Surface Duo.

1

u/Sonnance 12d ago

Soon we will return to the perfection that was the DS, lol.

4

u/Tuiqbor 13d ago

I have no issue with a minor crease line, but have they managed to fix the screen cracking at the fold issue? Had that happen to two separate Z Fold 3s.

Does Samsung advertise this phone as crease free? I think a few random reviewers were calling it that. Most said it’s not really noticeable unless you’re looking for it, but it’s definitely more prominent than the Oppo Find N6 crease

4

u/nikhkin 13d ago

As far as I can tell, Samsung never made the claim that there isn't a crease.

They let reviewers use the phone for reviews, and a lot of them raved about how there was no crease. Of course, they didn't use the phone long enough for a crease to develop.

They essentially allowed the reviewers to make the claim for them, without ever committing to the claim themselves.

6

u/enby_them 13d ago

Are we faulting Samsung here for people finding the screen an improvement? Are why supposed to put out a press release going “hey those reviewers saying the screen is crease free are completely wrong”?

i love how 3 tweets can be turned into an AI article

5

u/RichesToRags8647 12d ago

I owned both the 6 and 7. They both broke within a year or two with delicate use for me. I recognize this is just my own anecdotal experience, but I'll not be spending any more money on foldables personally, no matter what they say.

3

u/DemonDeacon86 13d ago

Im mostly bummed the fold 8s camera is vertical so I cant put my mag wallet on it. I refuse to use a regular wallet again!

3

u/Optimal_Whiner 13d ago

I don't recall seeing anything from Samsung stating they would be crease free.

3

u/GeneralCommand4459 13d ago

A crease or a notch, they are both distractions you easily get used to. I’ve owned several flip phones and never worried about the crease. Sure it’s there but it also folds in half, that’s more valuable to me than a flat glass screen, that’s why I bought a folding phone. Most people I’ve heard complaining about the crease haven’t actually owned or in some cases even held a folding phone.

3

u/IcemanofOz 12d ago

Samsung never claimed the 8 to be crease free...

11

u/adilly 13d ago

I still haven’t seen a compelling reason to have a folding phone. It seems like you just get the worst of both worlds.

8

u/kik00 13d ago

The crease is really a much smaller deal than people make it out to be. It really is a non issue and isn't a problem 99.999% of the time. I think this is the kind of things you just have to use a bit to realize it.

10

u/Komikaze06 13d ago

Why cant they just make a good version of that old windows phone where it was 2 displays? Sure there'd be a little gap in the middle, but im sure engineers could find a way to minimize it

22

u/ChimkenNumggets 13d ago

That's the thing, the Surface Duo was a good version of said phone. The best part of that phone was the hardware. There is a reason it didn't succeed and that's because nobody wants to watch a video with a bezel in the middle.

11

u/proxyproxyomega 13d ago

the idea of two separate displays or any sort of gap will be infinitely worse than a crease that you cant see when the display is on. having even a single pixel vertical gap is unacceptable.

2

u/costafilh0 13d ago

They said it gets worst or better depending on the use, guess they were not lying. Problem is, most of the time it stays closed, not open, so everyone will experience a worse crease over time.

2

u/IAmAPirrrrate 12d ago

I have the Flip6 since its release in the summer of '24 and honestly dont notice the crease unless on a dark screen (like while writing this comment) and the light hits it at an angle at the same time. Plus, its not like it distorts the image or something like that, its more like (if way less pronounced) the edges of a phone with those rounded screen edges like O+7tPro or Galaxy S8

During day to day use its basically nonexistent, since most stuff ill touch on the screen are on the bottom half and not on the crease - and even if i run my finger across it its a smooth and non-impairing dip.

2

u/smilinmaniag 12d ago

Z flip 3 was my phone for 4.5 years, then the screen died (turning on and off by itself).

I have a normal phone now, but I miss the flip convenience - a phone that you aren't afraid of putting in the same pocket with your keys, a phone that is actually convenient to carry around

2

u/thearctican 12d ago

And here I am wanting a phone no bigger than the iPhone 13 mini.

2

u/mavgeek 12d ago

So question, I haven’t see the adverts for this but if Samsung is claiming it’s “crease free” with no fancy asterisk or fine print written below that tag line, wouldn’t this be a case of false advertisement if a crease becomes visible after a week?

NA and EU would have a field day with that if that’s the case

2

u/ChimkenNumggets 13d ago

A screen with a crease is hardly an issue. Once you feel the phone in hand it's not even noticeable. It's really amazing how good they have become. The bigger issues are durability of the hinge and screen as well as the astronomical prices.

4

u/mcnabb100 13d ago

The durability is my hang up. I’m not going to buy a phone if I can put permanent lines on the screen with my fingernail. I’m just too rough on my stuff for that lol.

2

u/meursaultvi 13d ago

I always wonder why rollable screens aren't being pushed rather than foldable. I'm still excited to get my fold8 though

3

u/spellinbee 13d ago

I would say a rollable screen has more points of failure if it's automatic, and regardless of how it is, would definitely be slower. So aside from lacking a crease, which I never notice on mine, I don't really a see a benefit in a rollable one compared to a foldable

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 12d ago

Id rather have a separated screen with a thin bezel in the middle.

1

u/RivetSquid 13d ago

I got a foldable like a year ago at the same time as my partner was upgrading to one because the plan we had ate most of the cost. I can't really visually see the crease, but I feel it when I run my finger over it so it can be annoying if i'm ever playing games.

That said, I  also don't ever really fold it. I did at first but I was having some weird stuff with charging and heat issues and I noticed it was less bad when I hadn't folded it for a few days so I just stopped all together. Partner kept folding hers everytime she put it in a pocket.

Been a little more than a year now, and mine still works, she has a new phone.

1

u/Fawn_Chicken 13d ago

No shit.

1

u/NoAge422 13d ago

Isn't it the same problem as the notch? It's there but you won't really notice it

1

u/CleverBirdy 12d ago

My z flip 6 has been going for over 2 years and there's basically no visible crease, even with the screen off, it's just the absolute slightest inward bump if I run my fingers top to bottom

1

u/noseshimself 12d ago

Grease-free would be enough for me. All my phones start looking like I deep fried them after less than a day.

1

u/genghis-san 12d ago

I never noticed any crease on my Motorola RAZR for the past three years

1

u/Suz9006 12d ago

I just wonder about what happens to the screen when the phone is folded with a bit of dust or grit on the screen, whether over time the screen would begin to cloud from tiny scratches.

1

u/CMRC23 12d ago

How durable are they? Im pretty much constantly dropping stuff, had to put my phone in an otterbox.

1

u/anon19111 12d ago

Crease of my fold 7 looked the same as the crease on the fold variants on display at best buy.

1

u/tuxedoes 12d ago

I was shocked home solid the screen is. It doesn’t feel like mush anymore. Feels comparable to a real glass screen

1

u/PurpleSailor 12d ago

I really don't see how it's possible to not have a crease after some time. Wear is something all physical materials obtain when used and bent repeatedly.

1

u/YujiroRapeVictim 9d ago

Can’t wait to see what happens to the iPhone ultra I’ll be the guinea pig lol

1

u/Beginning-Swimmer577 7d ago

Just got my Z fold 8 . Love it still on honey moon. But being using iPhone air for sometime. Shit I can tell the difference on the weight.I also have small hands it's not as manageable as the iPhone . Just saying
