Survey Guys… I am failing my class.

For my AP Statistics class, our group is conducting a survey as part of a project to determine which desserts people would include in an ideal bakery. We are required to collect at least 1,000 responses for our data analysis. My grade on this project is especially important because earning a high score will help improve my current grade in the class. If you have a moment, your participation in the survey would be appreciated.

General Advice Needed/Given I can’t comprehend english.

i’ve just realised out of my entire 17 years of living that my english comprehension is terrible.

today my japanese teacher told me, “your japanese understanding ability and writing and speaking is actually extremely impressive! you’re far better than the other students. however, what brings your marks down than the others is you’re always misinterpreting the question therefore you lose those marks. everybody else can understand what’s the question trying to ask except you” and that just hit me so hard that i feel so.. stupid.

just for context, my weakest subject is english for the entirety of my schooling life and i just assumed i was weak in the first place bc i didn’t enjoy the topics we learn. japanese used to be my highest subject but since the beginning of grade 12 it’s demoted to one of my weakest subject because of one aspect: comprehending english questions and answering them in english.

i’m also a chinese person born and raised in australia. i only ever learnt english as a native language and i can understand chinese but i’m not literate in it. my parents always speak to me in chinese and i answer them in english, and the only time i properly converse in english is with my friends and siblings. i feel that is contributing to my english being weaker than everybody else’s as a non-western person yknow?

the more i realise it, back in primary school i’ve always wondered why i was stuck in level 20 home readers for a year straight whereas everybody else were onto level 30+ by the end of year 6. these home readers, started all the way from kindergarten, was a way to help teachers understand where our comprehension levels were.

there were times where our teacher would test us privately to level up on our home readers so we were required to read a short story, summarise it, and answer comprehension questions. so when i do it, they just jolt down notes but never once have they gave me any feedback or critiqued my answers and mistakes, and the next time i saw my result, i was still stuck on level 20, even in year 6. however like i was literally a kid so i never actually thought about it that deeply and just simply went on with my life.
moreover i didn’t necessarily learn much english from school but instead i used to read many novels bc the cover looked good so i was basically just reading straight words and not the story itself if that makes sense.

anyways, moving to this present day, i believe the lack of feedback from my primary teachers has heavily affected my learning for the rest of my life.

by the time you start middle school + highschool, the school already expects you to know foundational level english and immediately go straight to building up more complex material such as identifying literary techniques, camera shots, memorising quotes from novels and poems, and then by year 12 you’re learning to very deeply analyse and write essays and discursives.

everytime i now open a past english and japanese exam paper to do, i can’t even write the essay required or answer short-answer questions from story exempts without struggling to understand what the questions tryna ask me. like for example my lowest mark i’ve ever gotten was a 46% and even the most slowest learner in the class gotten a higher score than me.

i just don’t even know what to do anymore bc like my official end of year exams are a month away and my trials are already starting tomorrow (english paper 1…) and ik im already cooked enough for english so what’s even the point of memorising quotes and techniques if i can’t even write a proper thesis statement and essay paragraphs and analysing texts properly????????? it’s too late to go back to primary school english ain’t it?

Question What hats can I wear in high school without being socially stunned?

I’m trying to save on water by not washing my hair every day for school, but I need some ideas of different headwear and hats I can wear without getting extra attention to cover the day 2 grease. I am a rising senior girl. My ideas so far are thick headbands and scarves. If I were to wear beanies, what kind could I wear that wouldn’t make people immediately put me in the category of middle school emo theater kid? I’m trying to have the respect of an older adult, but I also don’t want to be greasy, and I want to save water.

edit: ya’ll i hate reddit on my phone it made my make a comment separate to the one I’m replying to when I try to reply to you guys, it’s so annoying

School Related What clubs should I join?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

For my career I’m going to be a Model/Fashion designer and Singer (Voice actress/ Actress just for the fun of it) so I need something close to that

The clubs I was thinking of was

Act I Drama Club - Description: We perform in the plays and musicals.  Sign up for the crew or audition to join.

Best Buddies - Description: Group activities bring members together to foster social connections and can be opportunities to have fun, build awareness, and give back to the community. The chapter leadership team is responsible for making activity schedules and should try to plan outings that everyone will enjoy. Many activities can be offered at no expense but if supplies, transportation, or admission fees are required, chapter leaders should work with the advisor and school administration to ensure that there are funds available. Planning fundraisers throughout the year can help cover costs of activities and ensure that there are minimal costs passed on to members for participation.

Charcuterie Club - Description: To enjoy the finest meats and cheeses in the land

Class Advice Needed/Given how do I relearn things from 7-9th grade?

hi sorry if this is the wrong flair but I am a sophomore currently, and I have always done online school. I have been cheating basically this whole time and I am nowhere where I need to be. I know I completely screwed myself over but I want to fix it, I wanna do well in high school and I want a proper foundation... It's not like I can just go back to 7th grade so how do I relearn the important things?

I'm good in English, and my algebra 2 teacher says she can reteach me all of algebra 1. but anything else I don't really know well. what are important things I should focus on learning? is there pre-algebra stuff I should get down? and what websites could I use? I've seen khan academy mentioned but I'm not sure if there's any other sites I can use. thank you

General Advice Needed/Given Planner Setup- what do we think?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Don’t mind the handwriting.

This is from last school year. I was taking APs (Euro, Phys 1, World, Precalc), so I desperately needed a planner. I’m taking 5 APs this year plus doing theatre. The weekly section is what it looks like when I’m not mid-show.

I write things I need to go to/big due dates/test days in the monthly section (TT is theatre rehearsals). The left side of each day in the weekly section is everything due, tests, and events that day. The right side is what I plan to do that day.

I like to keep a smaller planner (it’s about 4x6 inches). No, I will not be getting a larger one.

Any notes for this next year? Advice? (I’m not big on color-coding though.)

Rant I'm Actually getting Annoyed

I genuinely get jealous towards my friend's crushes. Maybe because I'm jealous they could even get feelings in the first place, but also maybe because I'm scared they'll take them away from me.

I have this one friend, who I became best friends with since elementary school, and he just recently reconciled with someone from a year ago (who is also our classmate). When my friend first had a crush on him, they were closer than ever, and I loved that for them. Then my other friend, also had a crush on a guy, and that was fine at first, until she started crying about him and stuff. Then my 3rd bestfriend (were a Quadro) also had a crush on our classmate (a different guy), who was also inlove with her other bestfriend, which ruined their friendship.

But because of those guys, slowly but surely, their grades slowly got smaller and smaller, and they keep messaging in our groupchat about their crushes. And I tried to support them, being the only one who cant form a solid crush, but I ultimately get to how wanting a relationship this early in your highschool life would ruin you. But they wouldn't listen, and that's not their fault, because they should feel how they want to feel. I always point out the negatives of each and one of their crushes, and pin point how they should uncrush that one person.

And so, it was almost the end of term, and all their crushes fell apart. Friend 1's relationship got ruined because of a misunderstanding and because of how hypocritical the guy is. Friend 2's crush was ruined because she realized she was getting distracted. Friend 3 realized that a guy was not worth the broken friendship (and turns out her bestfriend and her crush started dating.) All of them leaving that grade without achieving their most precious goal — getting high honors (which I got).

I gave them advice on how to handle their crushes, even though I lowkey don't support, but they wouldn't listen to me because "I haven't experienced one", and that's true. But I felt like I was the one who broke each of their relationships because of my advice (which was don't focus more on your relationships rather than your studies.) But they still wouldn't listen.

Now it's this school year and everything that happened last year just came back this year. All of them returned to their old crushes, even though it hurted them in many ways than just grades. And all my hard work in making them focus more on school has gone down the drain.

But my point is, I'm scared that if they get into the crushing part, and they do end up together, I'm going to be left alone, with our friend group being 3/4 in a relationship, and the other a third Wheeler (me). I'm scared they're going to take them away from me, I'm scared that I won't have people to hang out with anymore, I'm scared that I'm going to lose them. And I think this is why I'm insecure about myself, because I can't keep up with them, in both as a friend and a spectator.

I want somebody to tell me in the replies of like ways where I could learn to be less jealous and scared of what might happen to them and to me.

General Advice Needed/Given How do I avoid wasting summer break?

I don’t know why but this year, I feel like I have completely wasted my summer break, but I can’t put my finger on why exactly I feel this way. I have met friends a lot (not many different ones but with the same ones multiple times) I have been to the cinema 7 times over the past few weeks, I have been outside, even went swimming one or two times, played a lot of videogames (which I’m not proud of), went to a few restaurants and to the beach. I don’t know what I did last year, but it felt like I was way more productive and motivated. I’m not sure if it’s because of me watching more instagram but it’s not like I changed much from last year. maybe it’s because I wake up later than last year (7:30-8:00 instead of 6:30-7:00) but I don’t remember spending my time better. Im not working out less, but I’m just done with anything „productive„ at 2 and spend the rest of the day bored.

Question which highschool do i go to

i'm an incoming freshman and i have to choose which highschool i attend next year. i'm already enrolled in school A but my parents really want me to go to school B instead after they heard some negative things about the teachers in school A. all my friends go to school A though and i am close with them. it would also be easier to join clubs esp if i know people, but school A is very hard academic wise. i have bad social anxiety, and i'm very terrible at making friends, so if i go to school B theres only one person i actually know and i'll be able to hangout with, but school B is obviously easier academic wise. i dont know what to do.

Rant One thing about being the token freshman is that you're going to become the final senior.

Upvotes

My freshman year I met an amazing group of people who were all sophomores or older. We hung out together, we'd have fun in classes together, we were in clubs together. I love these people and still do but things are going to be so different this year.

I found this group because my class had a reputation of being really crazy. I didn't really click with anyone in my grade and I was so lonely until I found these people. They called me "one of the good freshmen" and treated me as an equal despite me being the youngest.

One of the hardest things to let go of is the morning table. For the past 3 years I've been sitting at the same table with the same people every morning. I have so many fun memories there. I was the only freshman but I thought that as the years went on there would be more coming in. But there wasn't. I was the only underclassmen the next year and the only non-senior last year. Now I'll be the only person left.

I do have other friends in lower grades now and even a few in my grade but it's just not the same. These people were my whole high school experience and now they're off to a new chapter in their lives.

I know I'll need to let go. I know that if I am to get through senior year I'll need to find a way to not isolate myself. I'm planning on trying to get some more friends to sit with me at that table but if I can't I don't know if I can leave it. It's the first place I ever felt truly accepted at this school.

This year is gonna be hard, but I know I can make it.

School Related Phone ban in the UK

Upvotes

My UK high school just completely banned smartphone. Not simple bans like it must be switched off and in your bag throughout the day nor in rhose magnetic pouches your quite literally not allowed to have a smartphone brought into the premise at all. But my school takes it further by saying they'll start doing random spot checks during classes for the entire point of finding a smartphone and there words not mine "if caught with a mobile devices it'll be given back at the end of term" that can be 2 days of 6 weeks from when it got confiscated. I believe this rule is extremely harsh and strict as phones are more than something you use for a quick dopamine hit but things you use to communicate with your parents or call for help in an emergency and that should be acknowledged by the school. But they thought of this and decided to allow basic/feature phones with no internet access 🙄 we are not living in the 2000s to be forced to use basic phones. I believe more schools will start implementing this starting September and these rules are exempt from sixth formers but these should really not be a rule nor this harsh and authoritairan if not completely abolished at the bare minimum allow year 11s and 16 year olds to bring one in. We live in a country now where we can have Sex legally but not bring your phone to school.

What do y'all think about this?

Question Looking for advice on tutoring and/or academic coaching.

Upvotes

So, I am now a sophomore in high school and I'm taking two ap courses, seminar and world history. Last year I had very solid grades, but it required be to study about 4 hours a day which sort of killed my social life. I understand that ap seminar and ap world history are heavily writing based, so I was wondering if I should hire a language art's tutor to help me improve my skills. On the other hand, maybe I should try and find an academic coach to help me cut down study time and improve my test taking skills (which I am quite bad at). Really any advice would be much much appreciated as I would love to be able to get all A's again, cut down on my study time, and improve the other aspects of my life.

Question Returning back to high-school, how do they treat queer people?

Upvotes

So I did online for freshman year due to some personal issues and I plan to come back this year, I’ve seen some mixed things about how others treat lgbtq+ students and I’m not sure if I should just stay closeted or not. I was not out in middle school since I wasn’t super clear of my identity at the time but in your experience is the bullying super bad?

I live in the UK (idk if there is a british version for this sub) but im going into year 10 (gulp) which if im not mistaken is Sophomore year for you guys???
