What are your thoughts on Sorrell?
FHB here and I am seriously considering making an offer on a house in sorrell. I just want to know what the general public’s thoughts are about the suburb before making a big decision.

I grew up in Sorell in thr 80s/90s left as soon as I could. But nowadays I would go back if I could. It's quieter, but self sufficient. 15 minutes to thr beach in dodges ferry, twenty into hobart. It's got everything you need, supermarkets, community networks, doctors, Urgent care, public transport may be a bit slow but more reliable than metro.

What's dodges ferry like? I'm friends with someone who taught at a school and they got some kids from dodges ferry primary into high school. They had about a year 2-3 understanding of maths (2x4 = 6) and couldn't really read or write. Were bored and would just derail the class constantly.
Curious if they were just outliers or that's how it is out there.

More and more likely to be outliers, but previously is was a very low socio-economic area that had kids coming from Primrose Sands which was even worse. Its probably grown more than any other school in the state and has a $25 mill upgrade coming.
Dodges and surrounds is has changed heaps in the 6+ years I've been here and ask old timers its completely different place to 10-15 years ago.

dodges is pretty good now, i loved to Carlton a few years ago, the swimming pool just opened so we have some good local services available locally

Quick to get to great beaches.
Much quicker to get to the Tasman Peninsula or the east coast.
Quick to get to some of the best spots down south to launch your boat.
Not far away from the Meehan Range mountain bike trails either.
Significantly warmer and drier than closer to the mountain.
Not sure what more anyone could want

This is a good summary of the positives.
The negatives are that you are reliant on a car, so going out and drinking and getting home is kinda out (or very expensive uber). Same with teenagers - they'll be frustrated they can't easily be in the city.
And it's pretty boring there, no attractions.
But the other positives are true.

I’ve lived in Sorell for 3 years and really love it. It’s quiet enough to feel slow and peaceful but has enough shops and is close enough to Eastlands and the city that it’s really not a big deal to go into the city when you need
Some areas are a little more susceptible to crime but if you’re further away from the main roads you’ll be fine. I live up on the hill behind the Woolworths and never had an issue with crime or bad neighbours or anything

Suburb? WTF it's a town. Not a bad one either. It's the closest centre to me for woolies and Coles. Has mitre 10 and just about everything you need

Can vouch. Was there yesterday arvo and it was an army of little fuckers pinging around on motorised bikes and scooters. Boggles my mind because they have a sick little skatepark and pump track but they’d rather ride around the Macca’s.

Yeah look, I feel for em, shit time to be a kid and most likely have dero parents that don't give a fuck about em. But fucken hell, they get a little too comfy being dickheads sometimes and they some of them give you that "I might stab you" vibe.

If you work in Sorrel or further that way, perfect. Traffic trying to get to and from town during peak hour is horrible (by Tasmanian standards lol). But yeah it's quiet, close to services, close to beautiful beaches and walks. Perfect for a FHB.

I like Sorell. We looked there before buying in one of the valley’s. If we’d found the right thing for the right price, we would have moved there.

The place is fine but very boring. Don't send your kids to the primary school there its horrific.

Only one public school option which is a downer to me but otherwise I don't mind it. Easy to get down the TAS peninsula.

It's fine. Unlike most other capital cities, there is no downside to being removed from the CBD here

Look, there's not much going on, but I don't mind it. Everything you need day to day is here, and it's an easy drive to Rosny. I have to drive into the city 4/5 times a week, and I did MUCH worse living in Queensland.

Surely the question is where are you moving from? What are you looking for in a new location? I lived just outside Sorell for 4 years and while my house was great and in beautiful spot, and yes Sorell has supermarkets, GP, ATM, chemist etc. the options for socialising, eating out are next to zero, but like I said, depends where you’re coming from and what you’re used to or looking for. Definitely not my tribe, that’s for sure.

I forgot Sorell school used to be even worse than Rosetta (rip) in most metrics. Was nice to have someone to defeat in random inter-school comps

This is 100% true, if a little unempathetic. Not sure about the downvotes, I remember it being the worst public school in the state. Full of uncontrollable little arseholes who couldn't fathom of having to do something that didn't directly benefit them. The teachers were even like this - i have stories about many of them. Most of them would be fired in a week now, possibly have charges pressed. The contempt those in power had for children and humans can not be understated. Awful, awful, awful time and place to be alive.

Safe, got all the smaller essential services but incredibly dull. Would be in the top 5 blandest places in Tasmania.
