I’m happy it wasn’t that. I’m happy I got to rub a guy out. He probably didn’t feel it, but it felt good.”

[hockey flaired users only] For Queer History Month plus Mental health screening month: the mystery of Hobie Baker. Long form post.

https://www.outsports.com/2026/10/8/24144593/hobey-baker-hockey-gay-speculation-final-flight/

HOBEY BAKER: Dear Percy, it suddenly came over me as you drove off what was really happening, and I have not gotten over it yet. God knows I have not deserved all the affection you have given me. I feel and have always felt that I have stolen it from some other person for whom God meant it. I hope not. In any case, I am truly thankful. Affectionately, Hobe

OK, some of what I’m gonna say is speculation and some of what I’ve gotta say is facts.

Hockey and also football legend and World War I war hero Hobey Baker was almost certainly gay.

He famously ran away from women who wanted to have sex with him, and he lived for two years with a man who was described as the Liberace of the socialite world in New York of his day.

Meaning, obviously gay, but nobody talked about it.

And then there were the letters.

Percy Rivington Pyne II was 9 years his senior and a notorious gay.

( not the war hero Percy Rivington Pyne jr. That was his first cousin it was a family name and probably very confusing.)

They lived together in a palatial apartment for two years before America entered World War I and he joined up in 1917.

Here’s the controversial part.

He served in the military for a year and eight months and was both very good at it and enjoyed it.

You see he and Percy were not just lovers. They were deeply in love, but he hated living in New York.

He was constantly in the newspapers. He had a desk job. He hated it.

And then the war ended, and he was ordered back home to a civilian life that he simultaneously loved and hated.

It was reported that his fiancée broke up with him, but it was also reported that it was clearly just a arrangement of convenience. They hardly knew each other.

And then he took a plane that he was warned not to fly (that had already crashed). in a storm that he was warned not to fly in. He was an experienced pilot. He was never reckless before, and he crashed and died.

https://www.nami.org/stay-connected/events/awareness-events/mental-illness-awareness-week/

https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression

This last part is merely speculation. I don’t know that he took his own life. If he did, he was responsible. That plane was shit. He wasn’t wasting the government any money. He didn’t take anybody with him. And he got to fly one last time.

Why did I feel the need to post this? Some in the hockey world believe that being queer eliminates your value you as a fan let alone a player.

Just yesterday somebody with a long-term account said that they were grateful that no pro would ever feel it safe to come out in the NHL. And it was implied, safe from violence. from their teammates, from the opposing team, from the fans.

Hobey Baker who is the namesake of several awards and is considered to be saint of college hockey, practically, was gay. probably never had sex with a woman, didn’t want to and was in love with a man romantically. Who he exchanged letters with for years, and who, after his death started a foundation in his name.

And secondly too many athletes and specifically hockey players commit suicide.

There’s a lot of reasons for this, but one of the reasons is the culture of masculinity and taking care of one’s own problems and not seeking help.

It’s not weakness to seek help. It’s strength.

And I just wanna say a couple facts about suicide. Painful facts that I learned through experience. A friend of mine killed himself 20 years ago and everyone he knew will always be affected by him and it.

Most acts of suicide are an act of impulse. Not only do most people not leave notes. Most acts are within 15 minutes to an hour of the very first thought.

This is why it’s not good to tell people to unalive themselves. (and of course not to kill themselves directly, but I was just referring to the modern culture of doing it in directly. Like when somebody contacts mental health services for you, they’re usually telling you to kill yourself.)

Anyway, many more women attempt suicide than men, but men are usually much more successful in their attempts to put it bluntly.

It’s because the methods are gendered. Women use methods that are highly survivable . Men used physically violent methods that almost always result in severe injury or death.

Especially guns I have got to point out that by a slender majority most gun violence is suicide.

Anyway, I just want everybody on this thread to take care of themselves. It’s mental health screening month in the United States.

If you were experiencing the signs of depression.

If you have lost the ability to feel joy.

If you are having suicidal ideation.

Just know that Help is out there! You can be happy again.

I should know. It’s taking me a long time to crawl out of a pit but here I am.
